How well is that amount of GGO? Could be considered a success or barely?
SAO as a franchise still prints money so those sales won’t really hurt them in the long run. Considering the SAO name, those sales at first glance do sound a bit disappointing, but keep in mind that the series is a spin-off and not a sequel. As it’s a spin-off with none of the characters of the main series, it’s not really surprising that it’s performing like this.
I don’t know what the expectations were, and I don’t know how well it’s done for them outside of BD sales. But purely in terms of the discs, “meh” is maybe my best guess. As a spinoff it naturally wasn’t going to sell as much as SAO, and perhaps even SAO itself might sell a lot less than s1-2 nowadays. But these numbers feel unimpressive, though it could be much worse.
Wow,, that’s LLS numbers.. i expects lot more tbh… if i am into Aqours as much as μ’s,, I’ll defined buy some.. if they only sold 60k in the end,, its that mean a chance for me to get tickets is 90%?? Said for 55k concert attendances??
>Boueibu s3 v1 sells 494/641, total 1,135. 203.1%/510.5% underestimated.
Sounds like a really big underestimate.
>Aho Girl sells 662. This is from summer 2017, but only just now came out. One-shot BD-only release, so Series average: 622.
Seems pretty low. But then again, it’s a short so I suppose expectations are lower. Also, is this release different from the original ONA release? Because if it is, it could explain the low numbers (perhaps fans already bought the discs with the earlier releases?)
Gotta congratulate Studio 3Hz. For such a young studio they already created some really good stuff including SAOA GGO, Princess Principal and Flip Flappers.
From a marketing perspective I don’t get why Aho Girl was only released now, especially since it’s a complete pressing. They might have gotten better numbers if they’d released shortly after the anime ended.
The Aho Girl anime was originally released as DVDs that were bundled with some of the last manga volumes before the manga ended (i.e. an ONA release). This Blu-Ray release only came later. I’m not sure if the initial intention was only to sell the ONAs, or if the Blu-Ray release was intended from the start, but in any case, the fact it is that this is already the second release for the anime, which may explain the relatively low numbers.
That, and it’s a short to begin with, and shorts very rarely sell well.
Oh right, there were the OADs. I’ll make a note about that.
Those SAO Alternative’s sales were to be expected. Anyone that thought that they were going to surpass or be equal to the original were just wrong. The same thing happened to Danmanchi spin-off. It also underperformed compare to the main series. Was that a surprised? Not really.
The fact that none of the main cast were in it should have given that away easily. Not to mention that production-wise it was way inferior. It just isn’t the same without Shingo Adachi as a Chief Animation Director. Adachi was the one that brought talent into the project.
I want to believe that the next season of SAO will do better, or the same, as its predecessors, especially since I feel that the content of the Alicization Arc is much better, plus Adachi is back as a Chief Animation Director. But then again, you never know with this market. Sometimes things just click and sell great, sometimes they don’t (no matter of production quality). Plus, sequels usually sell less than their predecessors (at least nowadays), so there is that as well.
Anyhow, I’d say that any series that do +4000 (DVD+BD) in sales in this market is doing pretty good… Now, you should cry for those that do around 1500 or less, especially those with higher production values.
By the way, good job managing this site. It gotta take a lot of time to put all this information together, so keep the good work.
