Fall update:

Summer update:
Isekai wa Smartphone v3 sells 1079/390, total 1,469.
Tenshi no 3P v2 sells 1,194 BDs, DVDs do not rank.
Owarimono s2 v1 adds 1063 BDs, total 17,637. Well the lower than expected wk1 wasn’t just due to stock or anything because this is also the lowest wk2 for a Monogatari volume. I guess it’s just no longer a 20k series. Hell year continues to consume nearly all high-profile sequels. ::insert usual caveat about how it’s still amazing that a late night series like Monogatari sells even this much after 8.5 years and 34 volumes::
Symphogear s4 v2 adds 1664/239, total 17,609. Strong wk2 puts it back ahead of s3v2 as of wk2, though it needs to add another 645 to pass the total. (Keep in mind s3 had the small benefit of the extended rankings, which we don’t have anymore.)
Katsugeki Tourabu v4 adds 697/373, total 11,674.
Pripri v2 adds 782 BDs, total 5,790.
Made in Abyss v1 adds 345 BDs, total 5,662.
Saiyuuki Reload Blast v3 adds 446/310, total 4,205.
New Game s2 v2 adds 369 BDs, total 4,028.
Knight’s v1 adds 454, total 3,462.
Isekai Shokudou v2 adds 246 BDs, total 2,014.
Hitorijime v2 adds 273 DVDs, total 1,816.
Past seasons:
Granblue v3 adds 220 DVDs, total 39,066 in wk19.
v5 adds 261/277, total 36,441 in wk11.
v6 adds 2274/1841, total 37,420 in wk2.
Saekano s2 v4 adds 491 BDs, total 7,042.
Eromanga-sensei v5 adds 553 BDs, total 6,557.
Natsume s6 v5, final volume, adds 253 BDs, total 4,517. Series average: 4,777.
Bang Dream v6 adds 678, total 4,207.
Starmyu s2 v5 adds 326 BDs, total 3,708.
Haine v5 adds 239 DVDs, total 1,624.
OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Free Kizuna sells 7105/4302m total 11,407.
Digimon Adv tri v5 sells 5442/1863, total 7,305.
Minami-ke s4 BD Box sells 429.
Kimi no Na wa adds 1126/707, total 850,140. Mentioning this again here because it’s probably the last big milestone it’ll hit for a long time. 900k, if reached, may be a year away.
SAO Ordinal Scale adds 589/276, total 143,488.
Kurobas Last Game adds 267 RE DVDs, total 41,496.

I dont know why v3 granblue suddenly reappeared, unless people are trying to makesure to buy all disc for the gold bar at the end, weird boost (it just had a 10 draw ticket if I remember), V6 already overtaking the previous volume, nice.
Free! I guess thats will at least reach half of the average of that season, not bad
Great, now I want to add up how much those 34 volumes of Monogatari would have cost if you bought all the imports….. Also, thanks for that Na Wa update, I had been adding them together for a while there but hadn’t in weeks and was curious what the total was up to.
Assuming BDs, ¥245,000 MSRP (tax excluded). Adding in the remaining Owari s2 volumes and Kizu films brings the total to date to ¥282,400 MSRP (tax excluded).
That’s about USD$2,500 MSRP at current exchange rates, although you have to add shipping and subtract online retailer discounts. Also the exchange rate was worse for much of Monogatari’s release than it is today. For my part, after all discounts and shipping costs and taking into account the exchange rate at the time each was ordered, I’ve spent ¥204,679 ($2,131) on Monogatari BDs so far. And I don’t even own Koyomi (maybe eventually) or Kizu (no thanks) or Owari s2 (eventually).
I salute you. Doing right by your hobby and supporting the industry. No thanks to kizu? Aww, I liked them quite a bit even though they should have been longer 2+hr each to flesh out the story more. I enjoyed the break in style myself. I was doing the state-side releases for Bake/Nise but then they started splitting to smaller boxes and it turned me off, I still get an itchy finger every few months to buy s2, hana, tsuki, etc. I’m sure I’ll cave eventually.
Kizu’s visual style was immensely off-putting to me. The TV series’ style of abstract backgrounds is great, but the excessively CG approach of the films was just a disaster. I dropped Kizu 15 minutes into the first film because I found it unbearable to look at.
I’m glad to see that Princess Principal is at least showing up on the charts on the second week, and is doing somewhat well overall.
Did Made in Abyss get bumped off the list? Kinda sucks.
This is only the preliminary list. It’ll probably do 300-some in the full list that’ll be out on Thursday/Friday. Higher-priced items tend to be front-loaded anyway.
No Made in Abyss in this list?
Is 11k good for a recap movie?
There’s more to determining what is good than just whether something is a recap or not. I don’t really think we can call this good or bad without knowing what expectations were. It’s certainly not amazing, but it’d be hasty to assume it’s bad too.
I completely forgot that this is a recap movie. Those numbers are about half of the average for the second season, so I’ve been kind of worried for the sales of the third season, which is coming out next year.
ok, I just checked the BD sales of some other recap movies like overlord (sold 5k) and hibike (5k) and i think 11k is actually not that bad for a recap movie but those shows averaged less than free! so still not sure
I just dont see a reason why someone would buy a recap movie (unless they somehow didnt get the full series, but even then). Additionally they probably also already paid to see the recap movie in a theater too, so again. Seems like a recap movie BD would just be for the most hardcore of the already hardcore collectors.
There’s no particularly good correlation between being a recap and sales. I mean, the Nanoha first two films did 100k and they were recaps, albeit with all new art. The first two Madoka movies were pure recaps (not redrawn art) and sold something like 115k. But most recaps sell far less. Sub-20k or sub-15k is more the norm.
BD/DVDs of Free! recap films are bundled with event tickets, quite an aggressive promotional move for mere recaps. Not sure how you’d judge whether 11.4k first week is sufficiently good or not but safe to say sales would’ve been quite a bit lower without the ticket boost.
The reason I don’t think that made too much difference (yet) is that those tickets were literally announced like 36 hours before the disc released, right when s3 was announced. It shot to #1 at Amazon when that happened, but I think it was too late to affect first week sales all that much. It’s possible there will be a long tail, or it’s simply possible the event in question isn’t that big of a draw. Maybe it’s a small-scale event or something like that – we’ve seen how the nature of an event has a major impact on how much it can boost sales (just compare Cinderella Girls Gekijou s1v1’s 40k+ to what s2v1 is estimated to do with its minor event).
The Free! Compilation movies are a bit of an oddity imao. They are technically “compilation” but they also include a lot of new material. This movie has roughly 15 or so minutes of new material and the second movie was at least 2/5ths new. The new material likely going to be necessary to understand the new Free! series coming out in the summer. I guess I’m surprised that in the theater and on BD/DVD this didn’t sell better.
So I did want to ask because I guess this is the best place for most regarding JP releases… I see that Bakuon!! is getting a Blu-ray box next month, and yet it’s been less than two years since the show had its initial airing. I’ve not seen many instances where a box came out this soon, but the show sold at least a little better than average for its initial run, so I guess this could be a good thing. But *should* I be reading into this as a factor in the show maybe getting more content?
BD boxes have been getting a bit faster of late, as far as I can tell. But no I wouldn’t read too much into it for this particular show. Usually if a BD box has some relationship to a sequel, the sequel is announced first and the BD box is timed to come out near it. Since we haven’t even had a sequel announcement yet, let alone one airing next season, it’s highly unlikely the BD box means anything more than the publisher wanting to squeeze in a bit more revenue before the end of the year.
Full list posted.
