Spring update:
Deremas Gekijou v1 sells 21798/11410, total 33,208. 19.6%/60.0% underestimated. Event ticket, of course. I knew the main TV series was underestimated but for some reason thought this one wouldn’t be quite so underestimated, so this surprised me a bit.
Bang Dream v1 sells 5,796. BD-only release. Event ticket (in this and every volume). 14.0% overestimated.
Granblue v2 sells 19928/11713, total 31,641. Down from 41.8k v1wk1, so a sizable dip. We’ll have to see what kind of tail it has. Obviously sales will fluctuate according to the bonus code in each volume.
v1 adds 638/571, total 50,977. 50k get.
Winter update:
One Room sells 1,602. BD-only release. 36.0% overestimated. One-shot release, so Series Average: 1,602.
Chiruran sells 332. DVD-only release. 64.8% overestimated. One-shot release, so Series Average: 332.
Konosuba s2 v3 sells 6002/645, total 6,647. Keeps dropping, wonder if it’ll have a solid wk2 again like v2. Not going to be as consistent as s1, looks like.
Youjo Senki v2 sells 5538/795, total 6,333. Decent hold, will be under 10% drop if it gets any sort of wk2.
Gintama. v2 sells 2094/2037, total 4,131. I’m always amazed how close the DVD and BD are for this show, pretty much every time.
Gabdro v3, final volume, sells 2718/389, total 3,107. Glad this stayed so consistent despite varying bonuses, even if the numbers aren’t high. Series average: 3,548.
Fuuka v3 sells 1242/398, total 1,640.
Demi-chan v3 sells 1,339 BDs, DVDs do not rank.
Marginal#4 v3 sells 792/409, total 1,201. 4.2k → 2.5k → 1.2k over three volumes.
Rewrite s2 v2 sells 1,187 BDs, DVDs do not rank.
Super Lovers 2 v3 sells 574/576, total 1,150.
Masamune-kun v3 sells 655 BDs, DVDs do not rank.
Urara v3 sells 555 BDs, DVDs do not rank.
Schoolgirl Strikers v3 sells 503 BDs, DVDs do not rank.
Hand Shakers v2, final volume, sells 342 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 361.
Chaos;Child v3 sells 265 BDs, DVDs do not rank.
Kobayashi-san v3 adds 281 BDs, total 3,509.
LWA v2 adds 257 BDs, total 3,182.
Past seasons:
YOI v6, final volume, sells 45276/18283, total 63,559.
v1 adds 458 BDs, total 75,186.
v2 adds 452 BDs, total 67,745.
v3 adds 467 BDs, total 61,851.
v4 adds 629/308, total 59,783.
v5 adds 974/517, total 58,130.
Goddamn, that is one big-ass boost for that bonus scene. 18k higher than v5wk1, which is just crazy, and it’s not impossible that this could even pass the v1 event ticket volume, it would only need about a v5-sized tail. It also pushed all the other volumes to noteworthy gains, and the average just keep pushing higher.
At this point, passing Osomatsu-san isn’t just possible it may be better to think of it as *probable*. Just another 10k for v6 would put it less than 1k avg down, and no doubt the other volumes will be adding data too. Plus the per-series rankings gave Osomatsu-san a 10k disc (not avg) boost so YOI will benefit from some bump there too. Series average: 64,376.
Utapri s4 v6, final volume, sells 12155/5023, total 17,178.
v4 adds 341 BDs, total 17,877 in wk5, meaning it added 250 in wk4.
v5 adds 763 BDs, total 16,814. Series average: 27,616.
Jojo pt4 v12 sells 4956/1157, total 6,113. One more to go. Guess it’ll hold onto about a 7.5k average.
G Tekektsu s2 v6 sells 3565/524, total 4,089.
v7 sells 3756/570, total 4,326. Finally down to sub-5k volumes. Two more to go.
Brave Witches v4 sells 3781/348, total 4,129.
Stray Dogs s2 v6, final volume, sells 1407/1383, total 2,790. Series average: 4,729. Tracked very close to the first cour’s 5,299, and should end up close to 4.9k.
www.working v7, final volume, sells 1506/418, total 1,924. Series average: 2,707.
Izetta v6, final volume, sells 1,873. BD-only release. Series average: 2,113.
Long Riders v5 sells 1,131 BDs, DVDs do not rank.
Gangsta v5 sells 502/349, total 851.
Takkyuu Musume v6, final volume, sells 657 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 1,130.
Girlish Number v6, final volume, sells 436 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 622.
All Out v5 sells 304 BDs, DVDs do not rank.
Udon no Kuni v6, final volume, sells 256 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 707.
LL Sunshine v7, final volume, adds 344, total 64,953. Series average: 54,440.
Tourabu v6, final volume, adds 574/519, total 14,818. Series average: 16,433.
Euphonium s2 v6 adds 380 BDs, total 6,202.
OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Haifuri OVA sells 9571/1666, total 11,237. Very solid for a show averaging 7.9k.
Strike the Blood II OVA v4, final volume, sells 7582/1099, total 8,681. Series average: 9,190.
Mahouka BD Box sells 4,737. Strong, only a little bit behind the SAO BD Box’s wk1. Won’t have anywhere near the tail though.

Nyanko Days is sort of a weird limited release that wasn’t widely available outside of the publisher’s store so I’m not even sure if Oricon is tracking it.
HOLY CRAP THAT YOI SALES BOOST. It’s madness all right. Welcome to the madness, one and all. It’s a pipe dream, but man, if it could beat Osomatsu-san…
I love Osomatsu but yeah even me, I want YOI to beat it. But it’s impossible.
It’s actually sort of possible, though I wouldn’t yet put money on it. A whole lot depends on whether v6 has another big wk2. It’s possible its tail is shorter because everyone jumped on board early. Bit if it’s a normal tail, then it’s got at least 10,000 more discs in it, which is more than half of the remaining discs YOI needs to pass Osomatsu-san..
Yes, that make sense, thank you.
YOI sales have beaten all the plausible predictions so far (this is obviously a show for the wild overestimators), so I’m tempted to interpret your comment as confirmation that it’s going to do exactly that. :P
AND WHO THE FU*K IS TWERKING RIGHT NOW? ME AHHHAHAHAHAH
I’m so happy, WTTM boosted better than the event ticket xD I WANT THE MOVIE NOW.
Oh wait wtf? Utapri last volume is out? O_O
I thought it will be out on June. Volume 5 was out this month.
I had v6 listed for June originally, but I guess they pushed it up after the initial solicitation. It is indeed strange that there were only two weeks between 5 and 6.
It’s to coincide with their 6th live concert that was held last Saturday and Sunday! 70,000 lucky fans got to Starish, Quartet Night and for the first time ever, Heavens perform live (many tears of joy were shed from both fans and the voice actors).
Gave sales of the final volume a boost (vol.6 might have a chance of hitting 20k), fans started lining up for merchandises the night before, as of last week their two latest singles (Quartet Night duets) have a combined sales of ~54k, and perhaps the biggest news coming out of the weekend is the announcement of a new movie project (a billion yen should easily be in the bag for this one).
All in all the momentum for Utapri’s still going gangbusters. Final average for S4 (with mid-years addition) should be around 28-29k, and no sign of letting up just yet, especially with multiple games slated for launch in the coming months, including the much-anticipated Shining Live (mobile game by KLab).
Sadly for us, Avex doesn’t need a few hundred or even a few thousand foreign disc sales. They’ve swimming in yen from Yoi and Osomatsu san. Doesn’t matter to them which comes out ahead, they’re laughing all the way to the bank… Rip my WUG discs…
But when Osomatsu and YOI is done, let’s see what they will do. Only people from overseas can’t purchase their products tho. Asian and Europe can.
Avex has European and Asian distributors? Just North America that’s screwed? Figures…
Yes, I don’t know what Overseas countries did tho xD
Erm, this is the oddest definition of overseas I’ve read! Europe is having trouble too, from the sites I use at least, and I haven’t seen any local Avex distributors.
Yeah I was about to say, I’m pretty sure this affects all exports. While there are ways to get around it (e..g proxies, buying used, finding a shop that is ignoring Avex and hasn’t been caught yet?) it seems to be a blanket ban. I know someone in the UK who was unable to import some stuff for example.
@Lynn @Something Well I don’t know. Many people from Spain and South Korea purchased Vol.6 of YOI. They posted it in twitter.
Plus I don’t care because I will purchase mine from Funimation (YOI)
I know it will take 2-3 years but atleast I will get it. So for me, it’s not a big deal. Tho I feel bad for the fans who want to purchase it now. :(
Some shops had a cutoff where if you ordered by ‘x’ point, they’d honor that order. For example I was able to buy all of Shakunetsu no Takkyuu Musume from CDJapan because I got my order in by mid-January or whatever it was. I think it’s shops like Amiami that never worked anything out with Avex but kept shipping anyway that got screwed. So those people may have ordered from CDJ, or similar.
Ok so I still wonder who owns the rights internationally, if anyone? Was it just Avex itself or did some other company force them? We may never know unless they actually open up shop somewhere outside Japan.
Not sure the international rights matter per se, since Avex is “only” restricting the Japanese release from being exported. Even for titles that aren’t licensed.
Indeed we never will know, of course. Avex doesn’t give a shit about any of us and won’t tell us anything. I’d guess it was an internal decision rather than external licensor pressure though.
It’s actually really sad when you consider that the latest WUG single sold really averagely. Avex can burn in hell, I just want to support WUG ;_;
I bought it on iTunes Japan instead, even though I don’t live in Japan anymore. Wonder if/when they will close the iTunes gift card gaping wide whole in regional ‘legal’ music download licensing?
Err, hole not whole.
Re: the comments on YOI’s bonus scene boost: How is it that fans almost never purchase a disc solely for a favorite aired episode, but do purchase a disc solely for an unaired scene or OVA?
Simply because the disc is the only way to get said scene. It’s something new and exclusive and thus desirable.
Could you explain a bit more? Assuming they’ve downloaded a series illegally (which I assume is the only way to own a copy without buying the discs), why don’t they illegally download its bonus scenes?
You can record the other episodes on TV or watch on stream- you don’t necessarily have to illegally download it. But Yuri on Ice is definitely something special in terms of the boost it got. Most shows (I can’t actually think of anything right now, but I’m sure something exists) do not get such a big boost from added scenes. An almost 20k disc increase for a 2 minute skating sequence is pretty nutty.
You don’t even need to download it illegally. It is so short that it is on Twitter and Youtube (illegally but isn’t everything?). Perhaps the “extra episode” advertising was enough to increase demand.
In a recent survey of Japanese disc buying fans, a highly mentioned reason why people bought discs is because they forgot to set their PVR to record so it seems they really don’t like to do much illegal downloading in Japan.
With the fragmented streaming situation there (much worse than here) I am surprised they don’t tend to use illegal sites there. When traveling in Japan I find it very inconvenient to watch my anime unless I am jet lagged and awake at 1-3am.
It wouldn’t surprise me if the buzz over the cover (one of the first pieces official art to show rings) also helped advertising. But to be honest… I don’t know. I said this in another comment- Yuri on Ice doesn’t behave like other shows do. It’s an event anime shared by a huge group of people. People just want to be a part of it. For some reason, an extra scene that was already leaked mattered a lot more to people than the event with the VAs which goes against intuition about female dominated shows.
In short, I’ve given up on trying to understand what’s going on with YoIs sales trends. Yuri on Ice got an unexpectedly big boost because it’s Yuri on Ice.
It did get quite a pre-order boost from the cover as well. And the Yuri on Stage event was around the same time, which hyped the fandom up for the movie. This is a fandom that pays 100 dollars for plastic keychains. Paying 70 dollars for a very rare cover with rings doesn’t seem that strange to me. Plus the bonus program obviously.
Thanks, you two. Fans who record the aired episodes but don’t download rips on the Internet would definitely have a motive for buying the unaired content first.
Sure anything can be downloaded illegally, but plenty of people still want to own a show. Not everyone can afford every volume though, so any exclusive bonuses in one volume will prompt some to pick that one up. Someone who is just going to download it all isn’t really the target audience for a physical disc release anyway.
>”Not everyone can afford every volume though, so any exclusive bonuses in one volume will prompt some to pick that one up.”
That’s about what I would’ve expected, but you’ve shown the stats to prove that favorite episodes and story arcs virtually never boost sales of a disc above the series baseline. I just don’t understand why fans on limited budgets will pick up an individual disc for a short bonus scene but won’t do it for 20-60 minutes of their favorite content.
Again, it’s just the fact that it’s new. You’ve already seen your favorite episode from the show, but you haven’t seen the new scene/episode. I also think people who plan to buy all the volumes -eventually- will spring for ones with exclusive content early, even if they only buy the rest later, or get it used. Different people will have different reasons.
And it’s always worth putting it in perspective. Even in an extreme case like YOI, a few tens of thousands of discs when there’s probably at least hundreds of thousands of people watching it still only requires converting some fairly small percentage of the fanbase.
Thanks. Since they’re pretty far from my own buying mindset, these things surprise me sometimes, but explanations help.
While the Welcome to the Madness exclusive (literally 2:30, so short!) is the majority reason people purchased this so quickly, along with that was the credit-less, cleaned-up version of the final ending skate in episode 12, alongside an interview with figure skater Stefane Lambiel, who voiced himself early in episode 12. The perks for buying were also pretty nice, a gorgeous coloring book, and for those who had purchased all 6 volumes from Animate, a collector’s-edition-styled display box.
And the “side story” manga which drove the shippers wild, of course!
Those last two were for people who bought all 6 volumes though- so they can’t account for the huge boost by definition. At this point, I think YoI just breaks a lot of sales expectations. It got a weirdly big boost for a bonus scene for the same reason it got a small ticket boost and crazy consistency- because it’s Yuri on Ice. It seems to follow its own rules in terms of disc sales. It’s an event anime for a lot of people.
@something This is the full list?
OMG!!! (Screaming madly) I was expecting an increase in sales for the first week of v6, but this … this is completely insane!
Nice for UtaPri, glad for a movie but I guess I in america will have no way of s eeing it, lol. Oh well. Hope we get an additional season announced at the end of the movie.
I wish I had been one of the 70K to see all three groups live (especially Ittoki/Takuma Terashima and Aoi Shouta).
—
I thought that seemed like a great hold for GranBlue, this one only had a 10 Draw Ticket (which would be 3000 GC coins)…odd that people would buy it, though perhaps they wanted the ost + actually like the anime. Though the gold bar for buying all volumes is probably the most compelling reason.
YOI is a sales monster. I hope it outsells Osomatsu. It’s funny we were stressed about LOVE LIVE but YOI is already way over it. So happy! It’s funny how I would have bought this volume if AVEX hadn’t banned it. Like most fans, I only purchased the first volume and would have bought the last volume.
The hype hasn’t die down yet so I hope they hurry and release the movie before the year ends to cash in on the hype.
There’s no way the movie’s coming out this year. Now that Yamamoto has literally all the money in the world to do figure skating justice, she’s gonna take her time to make it perfect. I’d estimate early 2018 at the earliest, maybe they’ll even try to synch it with the Winter Olympics
You have a point. I wouldn’t want them to rush it either but I feel like the industry has seen too many times hit shows become flops after a long haitus and they will try to squeeze out the product ASAP.
I can’t wait to watch YOI with perfect animation. (As much as I love the show, many animation errors in the series makes me sad and cringe.)
Avex has been killing it since 2015. osomatsu then YOI. wonder what’s next.
So how are the pre orders for the spring titles doing?
I did a Stalker estimates post for Spring, but it was back on May 1: https://www.someanithing.com/7166
Now that Granblue and Deremas are released, our clear #1-2 are set in stone. It’s just a question of who manages #3 out of Frame Arms, Shingeki, or Eromanga (which has been fairly strong recently).
Updated with the full list.
JESUS CHRIST WTF!!! ALL THE VOLUME OF YOI IS IN THE LIST!
I’m so happy *sob*
This week is the best. First Dakaretai otoko is the first bl manga that appears in Half year sales and secondly Yuri on ice sales is boosted and I have a high hopes that it can take Osomatsu place. :)
Jesus, all the YOI volumes got a boost! Oh boy, it just keeps surprising us. Passing Osomatsu-san may not be just a pipe dream any more!
So CG Theaters becomes the best selling short anime ever, no?
Depending on the definition of short, that’s either Koyomimonogatari (32,223 with 15 min eps) or Hetalia Axis Powers (23,287 with 5 min eps). Personally I think you need to be shorter than 15 mins to really count as a short, so I’d give it to Hetalia.
Cingeki v2-3 won’t be anywhere remotely near v1’s sales, which are almost entirely caused by the event ticket, so I can’t see it averaging >23k. It may end up ahead of Suzumiya Haruhi-chan no Yuuutsu to Nyoron Churuya-san (14,641) and be #2 though. It would need about 6k each for v2 and v3 to manage that, or maybe like 4-5k if v1 adds a bunch more. Heck if v1 adds another 12k (probably won’t) then v2-3 could sell 1 copy each and it’d have a good enough average for #2. Though event tickets make it a silly comparison.
@something
Looking at the updated YOI numbers and then looking at your Top Selling Series chart, it looks HIGHLY likely that YOI will end up beating not only Osomatsu but LOVE LIVE S2.
YOI’s current average: 64,376
And the three series on top of it:
Kidou Senshi Gundam SEED DESTINY 68,959
Love Live! 2nd Season 67,366
Osomatsu-san 66,770
To me, this seems like a guaranteed that it will pass Osomatsu-san and very high chance of beating both LOVE LIVE and DESTINY.
Or am I reaching here in regards to DESTINY?
It’s theoretically possible, but might as well take it one step at a time.
Just keep in mind that every 1,000 points of average gained requires 6,000 total discs sold. So while Osomatsu-san is within reach, and Love Live is just a bit beyond that, and Destiny is just a bit beyond that, those bits add up! Right now Destiny is 4,583 ahead by average, which would require the addition of 27,498 YOI discs.
Yes, v6wk2+ is going to account for a significant chunk of that. Let’s say 13,000 if it isn’t more front-loaded than usual (which is possible, and if so would make all of this much harder to reach). That leaves ~14.5k to move, or ~2.9k more per disc for v1-5. That could be within reach of some of the per-series additions we’ve seen for shows before. Time will tell, as usual.
