Fall update:
G Tekketsu s2 v1 sells 5266/843, total 6,109. 28.4/33.5% overestimated. If you treat it like v10 of an ongoing 18 vol release then this is about right, though sometimes the first volume of a second split cour (or, split four cour in this case) gets a bump. I guess there was no bonus in it.

Brave Witches v1 sells 4611/432, total 5,043. 20.7/52.5% overestimated. As expected, we’re looking at a huge drop from s1-2, even ignoring their insane BD box sales. Won’t do half of what either of those seasons sold. And yet, in today’s market it’s hard to consider 5k bad… well, that’s where we are.

YOI v3 sells 33181/12965, total 46,146. A very good hold considering there’s no event ticket this volume, and it’ll pass 50k with ease. While it’ll be the best-averaging series of 2016 by far if we look at non-ticket volume averages, I don’t think even this strong hold will keep pace with five LL event tickets.
v2 adds 650 BDs, total 63,663.
v1 adds 475 BDs, total 71,470.

Tourabu v3 sells 7644/6287, total 13,931. I’d say it’s a decent non-ticket hold but v2 ticket vol already had a sizable drop from v1 ticket vol so it’d middling. if the rest of the volumes sell like this it could do about 16k.

Haikyuu s3 v3 sells 4800/3867, total 8,667. Figure it adds 1k next week and that leaves it only 5.6% below v2.

Natsume s5 v3 sells 2889/1650, total 4,539.

ViVid Strike v3 sells 3720/382, total 4,102. With a decent wk2 should be very close to v2.

Izetta v3 sells 1,944. BD-only release.

Show By Rock s2 v3 sells 1,792 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Stray Dogs s2 v3 sells 1483/1450, total 2,933. Unless it has a big wk2, it looks like this is where s2 finally dips below s2.

www.Working v4 sells 1508/410, total 1,918.

Long Riders v2 sells 1,229 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Mahoiku v3 sells 1,177 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Takkyuu Musume v3 sells 779 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Lostorage v3 sells 634 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Stella no Mahou v3 sells 614 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Girlish Number v3 sells 531 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

All Out v2 sells 412 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Utapri s4 v2 adds 486/438, total 43,659.

Euphonium s2 v3 adds 511 BDs, total 6,436.

Summer update:
LL Sunshine v6 sells 23,884. It’s too soon for the v5-7 concert event ticket announcement to show up, but I’d expect this and v5 to add tens of thousands over the coming weeks, and v7 to open well over 40k.
v5 adds 627, total 32,663.

New Game v6, final volume, sells 4404/511, total 4,915. Series average: 5,769. Will be a little over 5.8k if BDs get a wk2.

Tsukiuta v6 sells 2932/1701, total 4,633.

Mob Psycho v6, final volume, sells 2451/1253, total 3,704. Series average: 4,749.

Masou Gakuen v6, final volume, sells 2143/715, total 2,858. Series average: 3,629.

Illya s4 v6, final volume, sells 2,591 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 3,382.

Amanchu v6 sells 2,107. BD-only release.

Servamp v6, final volume, sells 778/1089, total 1,867. Series average: 2,901.

Rewrite v6 sells 1,539 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Konobi v6, final volume, sells 1,143 BDs. DVDs do not rank. Series average: 1,327.

Qualidea Code v6, final volume, sells 811 BDs. DVDs do not rank. Series average: 1,235.

Souma s2 v6 sells 780. Singles are BD-only, DVD box was released in November.

Ange Vierge v3, final volume, sells 528 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 816.

91Days v5 sells 434 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

ReLIFE v7, final volume, sells 430 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 410.

Past seasons:
Re:Zero v9, final volume, sells 7244/1035, total 8,279. Series average: 10,635. And that’s the only Spring 2016 10k seller.

Delta v8 sells 5583/781, total 6,364.

Jojo pt4 v9 sells 5147/1122, total 6,269. This season is 13 volumes so there’s a ways to go yet. Currently 8k average.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Zaregoto v4 sells 11036/2016, total 13,052. It hasn’t *quite* leveled off, but could end up less than 0% down on v3 at least.

Yuyushiki OVA sells 7814/653, total 8,467. It’s overestimated like I expected, but did slightly better than I thought. Importantly, it’s out of stock as hell everywhere (estimated weeks or months restock) so it’s possible it has enough tail to reach 10k, which would be amazing. The best-selling volume of the TV series sold 4k.

planetarian Movie sells 4878/699 LE/RE BDs, total 5,577. BD-only release.

Strike Witches BD Box sells 4,583. This has become simply mind-boggling. No matter how many times this gets released it gets fantastic sales. Now this box included s1, s2, OVA and movie but it marks the fourth time s1 has been released on a box and third time for s2. This brings the lifetime singles + boxes sales of those seasons to:
S1: 13,789 + 18,284 = 32,073
S2: 14,327 + 12,128 = 26,455
Which is just remarkable. s1 is now has the third highest grossing BD boxes ever for a one cour show, behind only Haruhi and Bakemonogatari.

Tenchi s4 v2 sells 5,866.

orange Movie sells 445/312, total 757.

Isshukan Friends BD Box sells 359.

  1. Gintoki_KotAro says:

    Re:zero final volume finally ❤

  2. Elio says:

So it’s really too late for Love Live Sunshine to beat the average of 2016?

    • something says:

Not sure what you mean, I was saying that LLS should end up taking #1 now because it added three concerts, which will massively boost v5-7. The announcement only just happened so that’s why v6 isn’t bumped yet but assuming they get around v2 sales, it’ll boost the average a ton. Unless these concerts are somehow much less desirable than the ones for v1-2, or Bandai fucks up distro, expect enormous sales next week for v5-6.

Or are you asking if it’s too late for YOI to have a higher average that LLS? I mean it’s possible still… but it has to compete, without any event tickets, against what should be about 70,000 extra discs LLS should conjure up across v5-6. They would have been maybe 35k normally, but should in theory now sell like 60k each. Unless heavy concert fatigue sets in and buyers start picking and choosing which concerts to focus on, or whatever.

      • atala says:

Are the concerts going to be Aqours or Muse and would that make any difference in the potential sales?

        • something says:

The former. If it were Muse it’d sell like 100k again.

          • hpulley says:

Looks like no one told Bandai to print more. They’re out of stock, v5-6 until March 24th though often that number magically becomes today once the stock arrives.

            • something says:

Bandai, committed to never getting good at distribution. You could maybe pin a short OOS on retailers for not ordering enough but 3 weeks implies a backlog.

It’s insane that they didn’t prepare for this.

              • hpulley says:

It was a really late decision to add the event tickets and then a really, really late announcement of the concerts. The v6 tickets still say “some event, somewhere, some day, with some performers, check the web page for details.” But they really could have told Bandai to print more. I think you can excuse the retailers as they don’t want to get stuck with a lot of extra stock; I’m not sure how much they get back if they return the stock, or if they even do stock returns in Japan these days (I know they used to for books, not sure about Blurays). And as you say, 3 weeks means they’ve been completely over-ordered now. Wonder if they’ll need a re-release like LLSIP S1 in 2013?

                • something says:

On Amazon it specifically says they’re for three dates on the same tour. Nagoya – Koube – Saitama for v5 – 6 – 7. So a re-release here doesn’t help, because we already know the extra rush of orders is specifically for the event ticket, and putting out a re-release after the application deadline would not help those people.

      • JJ says:

The way it would happen is if the rest of YoI discs perform as Vol3 (which isn’t an insane idea but is unlikely) with a 55k average and the last three discs of LL:SS have less than a 70k average. (Which, again, isn’t too crazy because the 80k vol1 disc had a serious price advantage over the last three discs but could easily be wrong). Is it unlikely? Yes, but not insanely unlikely.

  3. JJ says:

YoI v3 week1 is higher than LLSS vol2 week1. It won’t have as good of legs but its still insane to me. As a fan of both shows, I’m not reallly invested in the “competition” between them, but I’m glad that YoI is doing well and hopefully next week LLSS gets a good ticket bonus :).

  4. Yaoi-Senpai says:

It can even reach 50k, I really didn't expect it to sell like this without event ticket, I'm so happy,

Volume 2 and Volume 3 of YOI sold more than Sunshine.

  5. liana01 says:

So did YOI lock on as the best selling anime of 2016 or not

    • liana01 says:

(I apologize if it sounds rude but I am just curios)

      • Yaoi-Senpai says:

Nope, It will be Sunshine! They have 5 event tickets, and as what @Something said in his Summery update, the sales is going to boost up soon. Sadly, Yuri!!! on Ice has only 2 event ticket.

    • something says:

I address this in the comments in my post. Normally I’d say yeah, easily. But with LL Sunshine announcing three additional concerts (and thus event tickets), it’s unlikely unless those concerts give LLS a much smaller boost than the other two ticket volumes did.

      • Yaoi-Senpai says:

Wait, is there any different between the event ticket for Vol 1 & 2 and Vol 5-7?

        • something says:

Yes, v5, 6, and 7 have tickets for three separate two-day concerts on the “Happy Party Train Tour”. v5 is for the Nagoya concert. v6 is for the Koube concert. v7 is for the Saitama concert.

This actually makes them a slightly bigger deal than v2 (which sold 60k), because v1 was for the same concert as v2 (just a different time). So hell, v5-7 could all sell 80k for all we know.

What might limit that is that it’s a tour, so you might only buy the volume with the ticket for the event nearest to you, but I’m thinking most people will try to buy all three, since it’s not that big a deal to go to the other city if you don’t get your closer city. I guess we’ll see.

          • JJ says:

It also means they (hopefully) are giving out many more codes so that people don’t run into the situation of buying 10 BDs and not getting one because there are 6 concerts instead of 2. I dont know what effect that would have on sales, but just for quality of life.

            • something says:

As far as I know you were limited to one entry per event anyway. Granted, some people may not know this and buy multiple copies anyway but that should be less of an issue.

  6. Para says:

I’m looking to see how http://www.Working does as I’m a fan of the whole franchise and hoping it does well enough for a second (fifth?) season. I’m fairly new to this website so wonder how do I go about finding out the BD sales as it looks like it was a beast of a week in new releases and going by sales of the first 3 volumes it didn’t stand a chance of charting in the Top 20.

  7. AnimePhoenix says:

It did 46k. 46K! I thought 40k was being generous but YOI surprises me once again. <3 Got my merch too~ Gonna order some more.

  8. ayumi says:

    46k!!! (I predicted 48k so I was pretty close!)

YOI is looking like it will average over 50k at this point. So happy for it!

  9. cocoa_hoto says:

So do you think Yuyushiki has a chance of 2nd season now since the OVA is selling well?

    • something says:

      I don’t dare dream.

But a series that sold okayish for a slice of life, then had a BD box that outsold the original release, then had an OVA that sold 8k despite going completely out stock in the middle of the week and may very well come back to crack 10k… well, it’s a whole lot better than your usual Houbunsha adaptation.

I can’t bring myself to contemplate a s2 tho. It sounds too good to be true.

      • BlackPoint says:

I wouldnt be surprised if they would go an make an OVA series instead of doing a tv series if they ever plan to make more, like Zaregato and Strike the blood have now an OVA one is a new anime while the other it has a 2nd season in OVA format and both of thoose are selling quite good.

        • something says:

*If* we get more Yuyushiki and it’s not a TV series, I’d expect either a film (because they’re a dime a dozen these days), or ONAs with future manga volumes.

          • BlackPoint says:

Ye thats an option aswell lots of movies as original, recap or sequels are coming out recently.

  10. GNozaki says:

    Oh, so I guess that Orange: Mirai DVD didn’t even rank ;-;

    • something says:

It definitely wasn’t going to with a 2.5k prelim threshold but it should get into the full list later this week.

      …well … probably…

  11. Cyssa says:

I’m so happy that YOI sold 46k!!! I’m really curious to see how the sales will continue from here, I’m hoping it will reach at least 55k total!

  12. AholePony says:

It’s nice to see Vivid Strike hanging in there. It’s not setting the world on fire but compared to similar series it seems like it’s doing quite well.

    I se a small typo: “Zaregoto v3 sells 11036/2016”, I think that should read v4 ;)

  13. walkuregatomaranai says:

    Wow, FIVE concert tickets.

I shouldn’t feel bad about Delta’s less-than-awesome sales because the anime really disappointed me, but I still do. Oh well, new Macross in a year. Let’s pray it’s better.

YoI didn’t drop so hard, nice. Hope this keeps up across all the volumes.

  14. Nope says:

Too sad Gundam IBO S2 only sold 6k in first volume….

I’m afraid now no Gundam series are able to reach 10k since AGE…. :(

  15. Yaoi-Senpai says:

Okay Ann posted a news about “Avex”. I just want to know one thing, can Funimation license Yuri!!! on ice?

    • something says:

The news is the same non-explanation they’ve been giving, and it’s all they’re going to give because they’ll never tell us the truth.

For literal decades they felt no need to crack down, and now all of a sudden “oh it’s the bad retailers who were selling without our permission”.

Obviously, something was the catalyst for this idiotic move. And unsurprisingly, they’re not going to tell us. So all we can ever know is that it’s a stupid reason (because every possible reason for this is stupid), we just can’t be sure HOW stupid.

      • Yaoi-Senpai says:

Ugh! I’m so scared, I hope Funimation can license it, if no, I HOPE AVEX GETS BANKRUPT!! There is no need for 2nd season (tho I’m sure as hell that we will get one) if i can’t buy the blu-ray/DVD.

And from the comments in ANN, some of them said that Avex is trying to do the same as Aniplex, Like Avex USA xD I will laugh if it’s true.

They’re acting like some external force made them give up the export rights but of course they sold them… they’re acting like victims or something. Corporate doublespeak at its best.

Avex go out of business though? With all the hit shows they’ve been printing discs for lately, that isn’t happening anytime soon.

Avex USA? Avex Asia? Avex Europe? This is the most likely situation. They’ve probably already ‘sold’ their international rights to their subsidiaries.

Yuri on Ice though, it was already licensed by Funimation and they’re dubbing it so I suspect that they are also releasing the home video for it in R1 though I can’t find the actual announcement of that. They usually wait to see the streaming numbers before announcing their disc releases but I imagine they were quite good. Complicates things with Avex USA if that is their plan, however. Perhaps they are going to let CR/Funi handle North America.

And I bet you they’ve spent more on fighting with retailers and drafting official comments on it than they’ll ever make from people who planned to import, couldn’t, and bought the localized release instead (spoiler: this is almost never going to be a thing that happens!). And that’s ignoring how much less money they’ll make from a sale of a localized release vs an import of their domestic JP release.

There’s no way in hell this ends up making sense for them. Either Avex is stupid, or they’re being bullied by licensors, who are also stupid (and evil).
