“放課後” was mentioned in the leak, but nobody has any idea what it is. The current guess is the Houkago no Pleiades BD Box which came out back on Dec 7, but it’s a mystery why it would rank again all this time after. It wasn’t deeply discounted at Amazon recently, which is about the only thing that causes these bumps.

Fall update:
3-gatsu v1 sells 1844/533, total 2,377. 22.7%/36.5% overestimated.

All Out v1 sells 537/235, total 772. 24.3%/50.3% overestimated.

Fune wo Amu v1 sells 462/280, total 742. 60.4%/95.8% underestimated.

Matoi v1 sells 554 as a BD-only release. 35.5% underestimated.

Kiitarou Shounen sells 398 BDs, DVDs do not rank. 52.7% overestimated.

Girlfriend (♪) sells 364 as a one-shot DVD release. This was the October-November ONA. Took a long time to actually find any info on this release but there’s detail here.

Trickster v1 sells 97/191, total 288. 43.6%/37.0% overestimated.

Classicaloid v1 sells 117/118, total 235. 64.1%/61.8% overestimated.

YOI v2 sells 36470/15381, total 51,851. Phenomenal hold for a v2 ticket after a very strong v1 ticket. And by hold I mean “increased almost 1000”. It’s obviously going to be more front-loaded than v2, so expect it to sell less total, but it’ll have a damned good v2 hold for a two-ticket series. v3 may be another question but even so, I don’t see it plummeting.
v1 adds 1036/532, total 68,554.

Natsume s5 v2 sells 3026/1815, total 4,841.

Vivid Strike v2 sells 3770/453, total 4,223. Not a terrible ticket drop, I’ll take it.

Stray Dogs s2 v2 sells 2001/2011, total 4,012. The expected big ticket drop but looking to stay on par with s1 again.

Working s4 v3 sells 1823/665, total 2,488.

Izetta v2 sells 2,071. BD-only release.

Show By Rock s2 v2 sells 2,056 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Mahoiku v2 sells 1,298 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Okusama s2 v2, final volume, sells 1,107. Series average: 1,055.

Takkyuu Musume v2 sells 887 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Sigh.

Lostorage v2 sells 790 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Keijo v3 sells 759 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Stella no Mahou v2 sells 652 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Girlish Number v2 sells 649 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Udon no Kuni v2 sells 374 DVDs, BDs do not rank.

Utapri s4 v1 adds 584/473, total 52,846.

Haikyuu s3 v2 adds 594/558, total 10,074.

Euphonium s2 v2 adds 648 BDs, total 7,234.

Magic-kyun v2 adds 733/373, total 2,678.

Summer update:
LL Sunshine v5 sells 25,835.
v4 adds 439, total 32,847.

New Game v5 sells 4410/545, total 4,955. 5.9k average with 1 volume to go. 6k probably out of reach but it’ll have gotten close at least.

Tsukiuta v5 sells 3072/1788, total 4,860.

Mob Psycho v5 sells 2397/1223, total 3,620.

Masou Gakuen v5 sells 2296/745, total 3,041.

Illya s4 v5 sells 2,531 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Amanchu v5 sells 2,121. BD-only release. Well, at least it’ll stay above 2k average, I guess…

Servamp v5 sells 831/1264, total 2,095.

Rewrite v5 sells 1,601 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Konobi v5 sells 1,166 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Souma s2 v5 sells 789.

Qualidea Code v4 sells 788 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

91Days v4 sells 468 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Past seasons:
Re:Zero v8 sells 7444/1000, total 8,444. An increase on v7wk1 which was an increased on v6wk1 (though v6 outsold v7 total thanks to a wk2 DVD addition).

Macross Delta v7 sells 5860/872, total 6,732.

Jojo pt4 v8 sells 5410/1276, total 6,686.

B-Project v6, final volume, sells 2699/2965, total 5,664. No last vol ticket or drama cd or whatever will keep it above 10k. Series average: 9,394. May end around 9.6k at best.

Majepri Movie adds 482 BDs, total 6,332.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:

  1. something something says:

High BD thresholds, so as mentioned in the post, I’ll check back later for Biz leaks for the other v1s. For now, back to bed.

  2. Avatar AnimePhoenix says:

Yuri!!! on Ice. <3 <3 <3 Keep fighting, my beautiful show! I'm pleasantly surprised that it actually INCREASED a bit instead of decreasing.

    Note: These are stalker estimates.

    Volume 2:
    Amazon BD: 12,164
    Amazon DVD: 6,059

    Regular BD: 6716
    Regular DVD: 4645

    Total Estimate: 29,584

    Volume 3:
    Amazon BD: 11,026
    Amazon DVD: 5557

    Regular BD: 4997
    Regular DVD: 2749

Total Estimate: 24,329 (Note 2: v3 has another month to go so these numbers might increase).

At any rate, I do see a drop but I don't see a HUGE drop even after v2.

  3. Avatar Blue mouser says:

So this means that YOI made money…yes? I remember reading that if a series sold 5k per volume it would break even. By my back of the envelope calculations the series has sold about 89,000 more discs than it needed. I hope that MAPPA and other members of YOI community see a good return on investment so fans can get a second season I think the associated merchandise is selling well and the magazines with YOI feature articles are also seeing good sales which adds to the totals.

At least there should be a manga. Kabaneri sold no where near as well I think and it got a manga. Cmon Kubo/Yamamoto/YOI committee gimme something.

    • Avatar vp24225 says:

There’s a big YOI event on Feb 11th. Rumor wheel says they’ll announce Season 2 during it. Can’t confirm, but with its massive sales and popularity, it’s highly likely they’ll give us something during the event :)

      • Avatar Blue mouser says:

Oh good! Hopefully in less than 2 weeks maybe there will be good news. Thank you, will keep an eye out around that date

    • something something says:

Made a fuckton of money, yes.

“Break even” is a very complicated concept that’s based on much more than disc sales though, and the break-even point will differ for 1) each show and furthermore 2) every individual company on the production committee for each show. So there isn’t really such a thing as DVD/BD sales defining a clear break even point.

As for MAPPA, they probably aren’t getting too much out of YOI’s success. They are on the production committee, so they should be getting something, but they’re very low on the committee. Their investment was therefore probably quite small which means they’re seeing a small percentage of any revenue. Most of the money they made on the show would just be whatever was left over from the contracted budget they were given to animate it when the production committee chose them as the animation studio. Since YOI had some production struggles, it’s actually not impossible they *lost* money (it’s rumored that Actas lost money on the Garupan film, despite it being the second most successful late night anime film ever made) – but I don’t imagine things got quite that bad. And being on the committee hopefully means that even if their slice of the pie is small, it’s small relative to a very large pie.

But tl;dr, it’s Avex (top of the committee) that’s very likely seeing the biggest windfall from YOI.

Also when someone says “5k” they almost always mean “5k average per disc” which in YOI’s case would be 30,000 total discs (5,000*6vol), not 5,000 discs sold total.

      • Avatar Blue mouser says:

Thank you, good information to know. Glad to hear MAPPA is getting some money, given how animation studios are struggling. Although international sales not counted happy to know my purchases helping them out :)

  4. Avatar Gintoki_KotAro says:

    nice sales for Re:zero
i think haikyuu v2 BD in the full list
    natsume /:

  5. Avatar Yaoi-Senpai says:

Am I the only one who is moaning while looking at YOI v2 sales? OMG IM SO HAPPY. <3
I can't believe vol2 sold more than vol1 for its first week. :3

  6. Avatar ayumi says:

YOI’s sales is insane. Vol.3 will be the nerve wrecking one.

  7. Avatar David says:

    > Mob Psycho v5 sells 2397/1223, total 3,620

    Well atleast v5 only sold 80 copies less than v4. Too bad v3-4 only rank once. The series average will obviously below 5k, maybe 4.7k at best. It’s not too bad (*sigh* Flip Flaper) but damn how much I hope for it to sold atleast 5k average ;_;

    • Avatar L0Ken says:

Actually 4.85k sales so far, maybe it will reach 5k but who knows…

      • something something says:

Averages tend to go down with more volumes, not up. The only exception would be if the final volume has like, an OVA or drama CD or event ticket or something that boosts sales.

  8. Avatar JJ says:

I’m confused, didn’t Sunshine have an event ticket? Or was that next volume? I’m kind of worried…. :( I’m happy for Yuri on Ice though.

    • something something says:

v5-7 have them but there seems to be some confusion as to what the tickets are even for, I guess? It’s not for a concert, at any rate, so another 80k volume definitely wasn’t going to happen. Not sure if shitty communication from the marketing side, or what.

      • Avatar hpulley says:

It could be for a concert… or a trip to the moon! The event ticket says it’s for some event, some day, with some performers… keep checking the web page. Not very helpful… It didn’t change the sales at all from v4. With a mystery ticket I’m not surprised. Not sure what they were thinking. I guess they added the v5-7 event tickets so late they didn’t have time to get venues or check the seiyuu’s schedules or anything.

  9. Avatar Ryuss says:

is there any way to see how much Haikyuu sold on the BD chart? I think they must have crossed 10k for v2 too

  10. something something says:

Biz leaks for the week. Though I’m not sure they’re complete. All Out should have definitely ranked on BD if we have stuff as low as 97 discs. Maybe we’ll see it on Thursday. Leaks also mention “放課後” but I have no idea what that is. The only v1 unaccounted for is Soushin Shoujo Matoi but I don’t how you get Houkago out of that. Let’s wait for the full list.

In any case, a pretty brutal week for v1s.

    • Avatar spacedandy says:

Maybe it was Houkago no Pleiades reappearing in charts or re-release?
Also, this comment is about this mysterious entry as it seems from Google Translate. Maybe someone here knows Chinese?
      放課後应该是放课后的昴星团box吧,这个其实是老碟,初动901,上周又回榜了,可能被他给当成新发售的东西了然后抄了数据

      • something something says:

Person doing the leaks only lists v1wk1s and BD box wk1s. Well, usually anyway. And the Pleiades BD box came out in early December. Hmm… weird, hopefully the full lists reveal more.

      • Avatar Lily says:

Tried to translate this: 放課後 probably is the Houkago no Pleiades Boxset. It’s an old disc, first week was 901, back in the rankings again last week, may be that it was mistakenly thought to be a new show and copied the data.
(no sure what it’s talking about with only this much context.

        • Avatar Lily says:

gosh made so many grammar mistakes…

        • something something says:

Thanks. Earlier today I looked into whether the Pleiades BD box was on super discount at Amazon recently or whatever, but it’s been pretty normal priced all along. Usually a steep discount can drive a couple hundred extra sales, like when Kumamiko ranked again recently. No sign fo that though. Maybe there was a huge discount at some other shop… or maybe it’s just something else entirely.

Wish the person doing the leaks would take the extra five seconds to type out a useful title!

  11. Avatar NukaCola says:

Happy for utapri but wow, I was really not even ready for Trickster.

  12. Avatar derpinat0r says:

I don’t like how much Haikyuu has dropped in sales for every season compared to kuroko. i know basketball is more popular in japan but still 1st season sold higher than kuroko’s and its better series overall imo.

    • Avatar Gintoki_KotAro says:

sadly,I wonder if there a particular reason

      • Avatar AholePony says:

I have a theory that spreading a single match over a dozen episodes results in poor sales, but with the customary drops for sequels it’s hard to pin down. You’d think you need SOME SoL stuff in these series to increase the power of the shipping and general attachment to the characters. The plot points for the recent Haikyuu season read: They played a match against X team, “(spoilers)” team won the match. Whereas with prior seasons you can say; “remember that episode when they went to X location and did X? That was really funny”, etc. The recent haikyuu season was a blur, you’d be hard pressed to remember or care what happened in what episode when all that really matters is who won the match. At least for me. I felt like s2 of Yowapeda, the last season of Saki, Chihafuru2, et al. had this issue but I can’t really find a link to larger than normal sales drops, so who knows.

    • Avatar Ryusa says:

It’s kinda weird since the manga sales are constant (and higher than Kuroko). I think the ratings were also high this season for that timeslot or so I’ve heard, maybe they’re just recording the TV version. There were also no sol/comedy/shipping this season so part of their demographics that used to buy it moved to other series

      • Avatar Progeusz says:

Difference is, manga volume costs nothing compared to BD volume (less than 10%). You can just pick up a manga volume at convenience store the same way you buy lunch for school/work. It’s easier to maintain readers because their investment is low. With BD volumes you need some certain incentive like rewatchability (quite often plot-dependant shows are hurt in this regard once you know the plot from watching the show in TV which is one of the reasons why “serious” anime tend to do worse) or bonuses.

    • Avatar NukaCola says:

I thought HQ added a lot in the yearly list earlier this week?

      • something something says:

That would be for season two, and it didn’t add too much.

I still need to take a look through the per-series yearly rankings though. Hoping to have time this weekend.

  13. Avatar Jarmel says:

So I guess the Amagi BD-Box did under 97. Ouch.

  14. Avatar Pegase says:

I can’t deal with 3-gatsu having such low sales figures.
Also I feel it’s weird they’re trying to sell Fune wo Amu as any other series, I believe it’d have done much better as a one-shot box.

    • something something says:

Fune wo Amu is being released in two ways: 6 singles or 2 boxes. This is the first of the boxes. One of the singles already came out but didn’t rank. I imagine anyone buying it is going for the boxes. Boxes are also oddly priced. The first is ¥21,000 and the second is ¥10,000.

  15. Avatar Myka says:

Happy for YOI. Sad for All Out!!
