See here for the 2016 Mid-year ranking.
2016 Full-year Ranking by Volume
• This covers the week of 2015/12/14 (12/28付) through the week of 2016/12/05 (12/19付).
• If the release is one I track, the amounts added over the last known number in parentheses.
• (n/a) means we have data that is more recent than or equal to what the yearly list has as of its cutoff, so there’s either nothing to add, or the current number is higher than the one listed here.
• The first number is the ranking among all discs, the second is within the Animation category.
• Some of the additions below have zero affect on the series’ average, because the additions were already accounted for in the per-series mid-year ranking. For example, Konosuba had total 1797 discs added in the per-series ranking. So the fact that v1 added 681 below isn’t new data, it’s just informing us about which volume 681 of those 1797 discs came from. Thus, zero change to the average, because all it does is adjust 1797 down to 1116. Then down to 267 after subtracting v2-3’s gains. That means 267 must come from v1-3 DVDs. Meanwhile, the additions to v4-5 are new additions to the average because those were not included in the mid-year per-series list. This mess is the downside of using non-volume-specific data like the per-series rankings. You have to be extremely careful to not double-count additions from multiple sources!

* Note: B-Project v1 formerly had some data added to it from the per-series ranking. because the total here is equal to the three weeks it ranked in the top 100, I’ve shifted the per-series additions all over to BD because it apparently didn’t rank on DVD again.
§ Note: Phantasy Star Online 2 the Animation v5 RE DVD doesn’t require a caveat, I just want to point out how hilarious it is. In the top 100 it ranked once, selling 2,280. Looking at Oricon now, it ranked in the 101-300 range 12 more times after that, adding a relatively huge amount over a 13 week run. This is the kind of (rare but interesting) stuff we’re missing without the extended rankings. ;_;

2016 Full-year Ranking by Series
http://pastebin.com/Kmr5dHKT
• This covers the week of 2015/12/14 (12/28付) through the week of 2016/12/05 (12/19付).
• Note that ANN is the only place I’ve seen this posted for whatever reason, and unfortunately they don’t link to a Japanese version. It’s very important to have the original JP though, because that can help clarify what part of a franchise is being reported. So I tried to recreate it as best I could.
Disclaimer from last time: “This one is quite the pain to use, because it counts data from below the Top 300 cutoff, which would also count any small sales from RE versions. There is simply no way it could be correct otherwise, because the averages it implies directly contradict the extended rankings. Also as before, I’ve settled on calculating a batch adjustment at the series level, and adding that to the total average. I will not try to spread these discs out across individual volumes as that introduces even more danger for over-counting. Even as a one-time adjustment, it can be very tricky if not downright impossible to calculate this 100% accurately for titles that span both 2015 and 2016 so I’m not claiming this is on the nose right down to the last disc. But it should be pretty close.”
TV Series562,503 Osomatsu-san
• Previously known sales: 552,125 = 523,782 v1-8 + 28,343 Live Event (Fesmatsu’16)
• Addition: 10,738
• Average: 65,473 → 66,770
• Note: I think “おそ松さんスペシャルイベント フェス松さん’16” is the only disc other than the 8 volumes that can be included in this total. So the 10.7k increase would be a mix of the 8 volumes + live event disc. That means it shouldn’t all go to the TV series but he vast majority should.
175,581 Love Live! Sunshine!!
• Previously known sales: 176,280 = 114,298 v1-2 + 31,982 v3wk3
• Addition: ?
• Average: n/a
• Note: This should cover through v3wk3 and the total I have for that is slightly higher than the number listed here, so n/a on adding anything. Not sure why the number I have is slightly more tho.
145,472 Owarimonogatari
• Previously known sales: 138,575 = 138,575 v1-5
• Addition: 6,897
• Average: 28,341 → 29,094
• Note: Note: “Before” average is inclusive of the 3,132 mid-year adjustment.
136,518 Haikyuu!! Second Season
• Previously known sales: 127,370 = 127,370 v1-9
• Addition: 9,148
• Average: 14,516 → 15,169
• Note: Note: “Before” average is inclusive of the 3,271 mid-year adjustment.
93,431 Girls und Panzer
• Previously known sales: ?
• Addition: ?
• Average: n/a
• Note: WE can’t do anything with this. It’s going to be a mix of the original singles, the second release of singles, the July 2015 singles [mostly this], the OVA, and maybe fandiscs. Probably a bit could be added to the July 2015 re-releases but nothing we can do predictably. The movie is a separate category at least.
89,387 Kidou Senshi Gundam Tekketsu no Orphans
• Previously known sales: 78,845 = 78,845 v1-9
• Addition: 10,542
• Average: 9,132 → 9,932
• Note: Note: “Before” average is inclusive of the 3,271 mid-year adjustment.
• Note: And talk about super close to giving 2015 another 10k seller!
86,866 Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka??
• Previously known sales: 75,532 = 75,532 v1-6 + 5,283 live Event (Rabbit House Tea Party 2016)
• Addition: 6,051
• Average: 12,991 → 13,597
• Note: Note: “Before” average is inclusive of the 2,412 mid-year adjustment.
• Note: The “ご注文はうさぎですか?? Rabbit House Tea Party 2016” live event siphons off some of these sales, but it’d only be very little. It ranked twice, and that second week was right before the end of the reporting period. So it would have missed DVD wk2-3 and BD wk3, which would have been minuscule.
76,853 THE IDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls (standalone only)
• Previously known sales: ?
• Addition: ?
• Average: n/a
• Note: 89,666 discs as of 2015 full-year list. 76,853 more in 2016 full-year list. 166,519 total. Subtract the fandisc’s 23,493. 143,026. Known sales of the standalone discs are 122,285. What’s unclear is whether other discs are included. 3rd Live seems to not be because its 25,039 is greater than the remaining 20k gap. G4U, categorized as a game, definitely isn’t. Still, I doubt the gap is really 20k so I’m hesitant to give it the bump. I’m going to just stick with its existing 2015 and mis-2016 bumps and leave this out. I *think* the 166k total may be baking in some Deremas radio show DVDs, which we don’t want to count.
68,791 Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu
• Previously known sales: 65,183 = 55,744 v1-5 + 9,439 v6wk1-2
• Addition: 3,608
• Average: 10,370 → 10,771 (through v8wk1)
• Note: The yearly bump had it all but locked for 10k, but this guarantees it with only one volume to go.
? Love Live!
• Previously known sales: ?
• Addition: ?
• Average: n/a
• Note: It’s listed twice, as 113,564 ラブライブ! and 64,136 ラブライブ! シリーズ “series”. Too vague to do anything with. I’m guessing one is related to events and the other to the music clips release. Not terribly relevant to the TV series at any rate, considering Sunshine and the film are both broken out separately.

• Note: Again, big adjustment, but with it specifically listing it as 銀魂゜ it seems safe to give it to the series.

Not a huge amount of change, but a couple notables:
1. The very amusing situation with PSO2A v5 RE DVD.
2. Re:Zero gained itself a boost of 433 to its average. That should be enough to keep it over the top. As of today it sits at 10,645 with two volumes to go and I expect it’ll end somewhere around 10.4k or 10.5k, meaning this is just what it needed. Even if it were just barely short there’d be a chance 2017 yearlies would fill in enough for v7-9 to make 10k. But I don’t think that’ll be necessary now.
3. Macross Delta on the other hand has far smaller additions, and they won’t be enough to push it over the top it. Even including the v2-3 updates, it’s at 9,979 now with three volumes still to go. Unless they get boosted big time, it’ll definitely end below 10k given the last two volumes have been sub-8k.
4. This means Re:Zero is going to be the only 10k seller of Spring, since the final volume of B-Project should drop it below. v6 would need to sell ~2.4k higher than v5 to maintain 10k.
5. Some series got a decent bump to individual volumes (Konosuba, Gochiusa s2), but it affected their average little if at all because those additions were already baked into the mid-year adjustment from the per-series rankings. More info on that at the top of the post.
I’ll update the Quick View, 10k, and affected seasonal Vol. 1 posts shortly.
Looks like re:zero is a big winner in the yearlies. Has that affected it’s average? Calculations incorporated yet? Thanks.
Sorry, I wrote that just the minute you wrote your reply. Never mind. Thanks!
yaaah Re:zero, i was waiting for this list from a long time,Thanks
So happy to see Doukyuusei, I think it will be the only REAL BL anime movie that sold more than 20k copies. I hope more BL manga get adapted to BL anime movie.
i dont get these numbers but based on
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2016-12-28/top-selling-animation-in-japan-on-blu-ray-disc-dvd-by-series-2016/.110415
the numbers should’ve been higher.
example re:zero should have 11465 avg (11160 w/ 7th vol).
would the “change” mean the number that’s been added or is going to be added?
There are fundamentally two different ways Oricon tracks sales. One is per-volume, which you see here. The other is per-series (check the bottom of the mid-season post I link at the top for an example of the latter). The link you show is per-series. That one includes additional data not captured in the per-volume charts. Oricon’s per-series chart is especially strange because it includes data that doesn’t get covered by their top 300.
In any case, JP urisure hadn’t posted the per-series yearlies so I hadn’t seen it yet. It’ll take some time to go review and determine how much each series actually added. It can be pretty complicated to avoid double-counting. Will work on that later.
alright i understand now. thanks for the answer and the info!
Woohoo! I knew it, Re:zero benefits a lot from the yearly ranking. Great to see it’s already securing the 10k average, just as I expected.
Thank you a lot for doing all of this, something. Your work is forever appreciated.
What’s anime’s BD #1?
The full list is an animation list more generally, so it’s a western film (Zootopia) at the top spot.
Final Live Blu-Ray numbers seems to be missing? or does not fit in any of the categories?
I’m not sure what “Final Live” refers to.
Love Live! μ’s Final LoveLive! ~μ’sic Forever♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪. The day 2 DVD is on the list but nothing else, so it is missing day 1 DVD, day 1 and 2 BDs, and the BD Memorial Box. I don’t speak Japanese so I am not good for this, but there is this link http://www.oricon.co.jp/news/2079454/full/ which shows that the Memorial Box sold 71k in its first week, which is pretty huge.
As DVDs go, below Day 2 we see:
258 *7,810 ラブライブ! μ’s Final LoveLive! ~μ’sic Forever♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪~ DVD Day2
262 *7,710 「AD-LIVE 2015」第5巻(櫻井孝宏×津田健次郎×鈴村健一)
282 *7,446 ちいさなプリンセス ソフィア/にんぎょの ともだち
So I’m guessing Day 1 was a little lower and thus below top 300.
For BD, looks like there were a couple concert discs below the BD entry on this page that I hadn’t included previously. I think I was intending to skip concert discs, but later ended up including them, but didn’t go back to this earlier list. I’ll add it in tonight.
Oh yeah I forgot it was only Top 300.
Thank you for the update!
love live stronk
The latest totals for Love Live! Final Live is given here:
http://dvdbd.wiki.fc2.com/wiki/%E3%83%A9%E3%83%96%E3%83%A9%E3%82%A4%E3%83%96%EF%BC%81
However, DVD Day 2 has not been updated yet from the 2016 Yearly sales. Day 1 total is 86,163, while Day 2 total is 93,697, since the BD Memorial BOX contains both Day 1 and Day 2.
If you scroll down a ways to “2016 Full-year Ranking by Series”, I’ve posted the additions from the per-series rankings.
Nothing massively interesting like a show moving over the 10k line or anything. Delta will still probably be short, Re:Zero had already clinched it with the per-volume yearlies, and G Tekketsu s2 came suuuuuper closer but just short of 10k. Osomatsu-san gets another bump but it’s still just short of taking #4 on the 2000-Present list.
Great sales Gintama (:
Did Oricon report how many of Gundam Thunderbolt’s BD sales were of the 4k format rather than just standard BD? Very curious to see how the first physical 4k anime release was received. I’d hope it did really well since I’d personally love to see more 4k HDR anime in the future, even if they’re limited to the movie / OVA format.
The 4k release sold a whopping 333 copies, so it’s probably not yet 4k’s time for anime.
I doubt even many movies are animated remotely close to 4k though, so it’s probably little more than a gimmick feature for the foreseeable future, unless there’s some other benefit to it I’m not aware of (better audio or something?).
It was mastered at 1080p and upscaled to 4k by Sony from what I understand. Indeed there would be no benefit in terms of spacial resolution. The better quality would come from it being mastered in HDR which would look a lot better than SDR content (better dynamic range, wider colour space, 10bit colours (little to no banding), better contrast, brighter colours, more shadow detail and so on). I’ll have to see for my self how much better HDR anime looks than SDR when my copy arrives.
Sad about the sales, though. Really want 4k bds in general to do well, but they’re not really at this point in time.
Thanks.
