Note 10/04: There was some kind of very early Biz leak this week here but I’m not in a rush to use these numbers. I’ll wait for the normal release of data on Thursday before going beyond the prelims.
Update 10/06: Yeah based on what was posted on the CN site, we definitely got a partial leak of 101-300 titles this week. That’s handy given the number of v1s this week. Just a shame it was only a partial leak (just wk1 titles). I’ve marked the titles from the 101-300 leak in blue text.
Summer update:
LL Sunshine v1 sells 66745 LE/167 RE, total 66,912 as a BD-only release. 34.9% underestimated. Event ticket. About the same underestimation as s2v1 (which was 38.2%) so keeping the same proportion of sales outside of Amazon.
New Game v1 sells 5716/736, total 6,452. 3.6% under/4.0% overestimated. Event ticket. It managed to come in slightly above estimates! I was worried for a while, but this is the best outcome I could have hoped for since there was no reason to believe it was storefront-heavy. Fingers crossed for holding onto a 5k average…
Mob Psycho v1 sells 3640/2009, total 5,649. 1.8% under/30.8% overestimated. Event ticket. Significant difference in accuracy between formats. I actually expected a little higher based on how well it ranked in release week.
planetarian sells 4,805. BD-only, one-shot release. 22.8% overestimated.
Servamp v1 sells 1545/3085, total 4,630.
Tsukiuta v1 sells 2817/1648, total 4,465. Event ticket. Animate-exclusive so no estimates.
Masou Gakuen v1 sells 2813/903, total 3,716. 24.8% overestimated on DVD, no estimate available on BD because Stalker didn’t track the normal LE BD.
Dangan Ronpa 3 v1 sells 3,671 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Event ticket. This was being sold as 4 BD boxes (combining Zetsubou and Mirai) and 12 DVDs (6 Zetsubou + 6 Mirai), but I guess the DVDs may not rank which makes this simpler.
Prisma Illya s4 sells 2793/338, total 3,131. 22.7% under/25.2% overestimates.
Amanchu v1 sells 2,556, BD-only release. 22.4% overestimated. Event ticket. I had a feeling it would be overestimated, but ouch. What a tragedy for a show this beautiful to do so poorly.
Rewrite v1 sells 1819/277, total 2,096. 0.2%/26.1% overestimated.
Konobi v1 sells 1348/130, total 1,478. 8.9%/45.4% overestimated.
Souma s2 v1 sells 858 BDs. This is a release with 7 BD singles and 1[?] DVD box. The box comes out in November.
Cheer Danshi v1 sells 263/408, total 671. 17.6%/51.0% overestimated. Event ticket.
Handa-kun v1 sells 166/210, total 376. 19.4%/37.3% overestimated.
Taboo Tattoo v1 sells 368, BD-only release. No estimate available because Stalker didn’t track the normal LE BD.
Alderamin v1 sells 292 BDs, DVDs do not rank. 28.1% overestimated.
B-Project v2 sells 4778/6342, total 11,120.
ReLIFE v2 sells 406 BDs, DVDs do not rank.
Boueibu s2 v1 adds 585 DVDs, total 5,994.
Active Raid s2 v1 adds 355 BDs, total 1,719.
Spring update:
Macross Delta v3 sells 8483/1434, total 9,917. Event ticket, so it’s back up around v1’s level, which also had an event ticket. We’ll see if it has the same tail, though. Still a long shot for 10k average tho.
Re:Zero v4 sells 8037/1070, total 9,107. Once again, this volume sets a new best wk1 for the show, and by a wide margin (about 1k). This will probably be the last volume that does that, since the show is over now. But this means that at the very least in the yearly lists, four of the volumes should get over 10k. v3 is 9,935 so it’s already there with whatever it made in wk6. This one should get there by wk3, maaaybe even next week. A 10k average is still something of a long shot with 9 total volumes but 9k seems like a lock to me.
Jojo pt4 v4 sells 5683/1725, total 7,408.
Joker Game v2, final volume, sells 7,133 BD boxes. DVD single v3 didn’t rank and v4 probably won’t either. So we can say this is pretty much done beyond whatever the BD does wk2+. Series average: 8,112. Will be near the top of Spring.
Haifuri v4 sells 5971/977, total 6,948. This one will slip below 8k but probably hold onto 7k average.
Stray Dogs v4 sells 1467/1554, total 3,021.
Asterisk s2 v4 sells 1476/398, total 1,874.
Bakuon v4 sells 1,722 BDs, DVDs do not rank.
Netoge v4 sells 1,483 BDs, DVDs do not rank.
Tanaka-kun v4 sells 724/391, total 1,115.
Anne Happy v4 sells 1,043 BDs, DVDs do not rank.
Hundred v4 sells 844 BDs, DVDs do not rank.
Shounen Maid v4, final volume, sells 524 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 602.
Conrevo s2 v4, final volume, sells 561 as a BD-only release. Series average: 477. 666 for the first cour.
Flying Witch v4 adds 341 BDs, total 3,375. Only down 11.7% from v1 so far.
Past seasons:
Ushio to Tora v13, final volume, sells 1749/577, total 2,326. Series average: 2,419.
Ansakyou s2 v7 sells 535/557, total 1,092.
Pandora v5 sells 658 BDs, DVDs do not rank.
OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Accel World Movie sells 4761/473 BDs, 635/231 DVDs, total 6,100. This is the one that was half recap, to the unpleasant surprise of those showing up at theaters to watch it.
Kurobas Winter Cup v1 sells 2119/1725, total 3,844.
G Gundam BD Box v1 sells 3,606.
Strike The Blood BD Box sells 1,803.
Tokyo Ghoul s2 BD Box sells 412.
Souma DVD Box v2 sells 392. The first half of the DVD box didn’t rank.
Starmyu OVA adds 460 BDs, total 7,073. Series average: 7,503.
Nadesico BD Box adds 710, total 6,676. Reissued but covered under the same Oricon listing, so this is just wk5.

I’m so sad for Amanchu… Yet Aria had always sold so well! I expected also Amanchu to be popular T.T
Aria was always a lofty goal (although its super high sales come from multiple re-releases, the original was 10k) but Amanchu! will be lucky to average 2k now and fuck, that’s just awful. It was clear from the estimates and how they were distributed that it’d not do well but it still really sucks to see it. So far my top 2 shows of the year are on track for about 3.5k (Flying Witch) and 2k averages, boy oh boy.
I’d have to go back and check but it seems, like you mentioned with FW, that “slow” SoL is a hard sell these days, no mater how pretty or well done they are… unless you have a super adorable cast like Biyori or maybe Gochuumon that is. People like us see the beauty of stopping and observing the world around us but of course we’re in the minority (these days at least). I still find it amazing how well Aria did considering how slow and relaxed it is, but it’s become a “classic” of the SoL genre for a reason I guess.
Slice of life in general hasn’t any 10k series besides Gochiusa since K-ON!! ended six years ago. (Unless Osomatsu-san counts. I haven’t watched it, but gathered it was more of a gag comedy a la Nichijou? (And I wouldn’t call Nichijou slice of life.)
So yeah it’s not at all a dominant genre. Even 5k shows are not that common.
You could technically call Osomatsu-san slice of life, I guess? But yeah, you’re right that it’s more of a rapid-fire gag comedy, and while I did enjoy the show it’s really not something that scratches the usual SoL beats.
I wonder why Japanese didn’t like in Amanchu. While it has quite strong Aria “feel”, it’s also a lot different (especially the focus on Teko’s character in Amanchu instead of environment from Aria). Maybe this is the reason? For me the biggest problem was chara design and the way they were animated (animation itself was done well but I didn’t like stylistic choices). Amanchu is definitely a very good show but I’d agree it’s far from Aria’s level.
It was supposed to be “what (…) in” or “why” but I ended up with a mix :/
Having recently rewatched the first season of Aria, I would somewhat confidently say Amanchu! is the better show for me. Aria wins out rather easily as a franchise, with the weight of four cour of memories to bring to bear and the transcendent beauty that is the Origination. But there’s a decent number of slice of life shows I’d put over the Animation. Amanchu! and Flying Witch both, from this year.
Also, man, the character designs were maybe my second favorite thing about the show after the Teko/Pikari relationship. The art is just stupidly gorgeous and the extremely detailed close-ups even moreso. As much as I liked the style of the deformed/chibified faces it could have done with a little less of them, but I think they separated them out from the really serious scenes pretty well.
I would say it was to be expected. I liked Amanchu!, but the mangaka changed a fantasy (Aqua) for a mundane (Shizuoka) setting. Same can be said about the change Arakawa made from Full Metal Alchemist to Silver Spoon, the former disc sales boomed but the later bombed. I will even venture something similar (albeit from different mangakas) will happen in a disc sales comparison between Flying Witch and The Ancient Magus Bride (which sooner or later will have a proper one cour series).
> LL Sunshine v1 sells 66,745 as a BD-only release. 34.9% underestimated. Event ticket. About the same underestimation as s2v1 (which was 38.2%) so keeping the same proportion of sales outside of Amazon.
As expected based on the rankings at Animate, gamers, etc. The μ’s Final Live sold 75,279 Day 1 / 80,453 Day 2, and that was with stock issues at Amazon (in stock on Oct 5th), so Aqours still has a lot of work to do to reach μ’s level.
I find it funny though that the Aqours’ 1st live is in such a small venue of 12,000 capacity each over 2 days. It should’ve been at the Super Saitama Arena… and the lottery is therefore going to be a bloodbath once again.
You know what, μ’s/Love Live! may be able to snag its 10th/12th gold disc certification (7 μ’s singles, 2 μ’s albums, 2 BiBi singles) for shipping > 100,000 copies, with first week sales as high as this for the Final Live.
Does anyone know if any anime-related artist, who is not already mainstream, has ever achieved such a feat in the “Music Video” category?
Love Live is mainstream.
μ’s was the 8th best selling Japanese musical group last year. They’re mainstream.
Welp, perhaps they could be considered mainstream… although others would still strongly disagree.
So, according to Oricon (http://www.oricon.co.jp/news/2079454/full/), Love Live! μ’s Final LoveLive! μ’sic Forever♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪ Memorial BOX ~71,000 sales makes μ’s the 4th highest selling female music act of all-time on BD, behind AKB48 at ~153,000, namie amuro at ~75,000, and Nogizaka46 at ~73,000. That’s a pretty nice achievement to have for a group related to a late-night Anime franchise.
Someone on 2ch calculated that μ’s has a total sales figure of ~2.243 billion yen in 2016 so far, with only 3 new releases (Final Single MOMENT RING, μ’s Live collection BD, and the Final LoveLive BD/DVD). It isn’t unreasonable to expect another 400~600 million yen before the end of the year from residual sales of the Final LoveLive BD/DVD, but I don’t think 2.6~2.8 billion yen will be enough to get Top 10 this year (Rank 10 in 2015 was Tohoshinki at 2.8866 billion yen).
Of course if the Complete Best Box Album (announced at the Final LoveLive) was actually released this year, then surely μ’s would’ve made the Top 10 easily, since the μ’s Best Album Best Live collection II made 573.2 million yen in week 1 (1.0225 billion yen in total). Seems to be whenever Lantis wants to release it, which is just too bad, but a Top 15 music artist finish in 2016 is still very good I guess, considering the circumstances.
There are more people playing that mobage than watching Pokemon in TV.
Please stop.
What’s the source on the standalone numbers?
From the Top 10 Music BD, Top 10 Music DVD and Top 20 Music BD/DVD (combined total) lists on Oricon Youtaiju.
BD Memorial BOX ranked #1 at 71,185, while BD Day 2 ranked 4th at 3,472. DVD Day 2 ranked #1 at 5,796, and DVD Day 1 ranked #3 at 3,280. Day 2 combined total ranked #5 at 4,094. Thus, BD Day 1 must’ve sold 814 copies (4,094 – 3,280).
> Day 2 combined total ranked #5 at 4,094.
Should be Day 1 combined total, my bad.
I didn’t expected that New Game! sold is better than Mob Psycho 100 :x
They had very similar estimates, but Mob Psycho was a bit weaker outside of Amazon. I had a feeling it wouldn’t be underestimated much, given it didn’t rank at Animate much.
I do think MP100 may have the higher wk2, because it ranked very well after release. But a lot of that should have already been included in these numbers.
nice sales re zero !!
did you think MP100 is a successful anime?
Man, yet Prisma still got a movie announced for it. Shit is astounding.
The grand TM machine never falters.
Type Moon is, apparently, eternal. I never would have pegged Illya for 4 seasons and a film, but I guess it moves that merch.
You can bet Prillya will have another season one year after the flashback movie, Illya is the jojo of magical girls!
If that’s so, why haven’t we gotten a freaking Tsukihime remake yet? Do they not like making money or something?! CAN SOMEONE TELL TYPE MOON TO DO A TSUKIHIME REMAKE ALREADY! AND MAKE IT AT LEAST 2 COUR!
Lots of old franchises are getting remakes now so I’m sure Tsukihime will get one someday. Don’t lose hope~
Because Fate is more important.
Tsukihime remake will happen. VN’s that is.
There will never be a 2 cour Tsukihime remake.
Tsukiuta vol 1 has event ticket? I checked on fansite, it is said their would be no seiyuu event or live stage, etc. And tsukiuta is not animate exclusive anymore, it is also sold on movic. Do you think sale number above is only reported from movic only? I’m just curious because after the last episode aired, all the volumes climbed up and ranked freakily high on top of animate chart.
It does have an event ticket according to Animate:
http://www.animatetimes.com/news/details.php?id=1471828550
Yeah I had to dig a bit to find it, but the official website mentions an event ticket too.
I’m assuming this does include Animate, as I’d expect far more discs to sell at a major retailer like Animate than from a video publisher’s web store. I think it just shows that while Animate is very important, by itself it won’t move a ton of discs unless the series is ranking high all the time. Tsukiuta had a solid Top 50 presence, but wasn’t in the top 10 or even 20 very often, at least when I was checking.
If anything is missing, it’s more likely this included Animate but not Movic. http://www.oricon.co.jp/rank/about/ – it’s not listed as a covered store here.
Would have thought Planetarian would do somewhat better. And Rewrite… holy crap, they’re really up for a second season of that?
Given the speed of the announcement Rewrite was definitely planned this way from the start. Which, erm, it’s possible they may be regretting a little right now. Depends how it’s done for the franchise outside of the anime.
Woah LL. Killing it as expected! I’m happy to see B-Project with another volume over 10k. Hopefully it won’t drop too much after the volumes with event tickets!
MP100 makes me a little sad, but 5k is better than what many series have fared. Hopefully it will pull in a nice second week! Happy for New Game though! That’s a nice first week, especially with these trying times for disc sales lol
I didn’t enjoy Tsukiuta but glad to see another female oriented anime doing well alongside B-Project. I dropped Servamp because the anime was a hot MESS because they were literally adapting one volume per episode crudely. But I like the manga so I’m glad. I really hope Boueibu doesn’t drop much with volume 2.
Nice to see Joker Game still strong. I need another season of my spy boys.
Kinda sad about Cheer Danshi but that was a lost cause from the beginning.
I like both B-Project and Tsukiuta. But I like script for B-Project more.I agree with sale but never think low sale for Tsukiuta like this.I think 2 series have chance to get second season especially B-Project.The end of 2 series open for second season already.I’m looking forward.
The title of this post is currently wrong and is from previous week!
(2016 09/19 – 09/25 Weekly Sales List)
Oops, thanks. Fixed.
Updated with the full list.
Based on what was posted on the CN site, we definitely did get a partial Biz leak of 101-300 titles this week. That’s handy given the number of v1s this week. Just a shame it was only a partial leak (just wk1 titles). I’ve marked the titles from the 101-300 leak in blue text.
Additions from the per-series ranking for the week of 2016-09-19:
Starmyu OVA v1 = 7,932 current
• 6,731 total minus 6,613 (v2wk1) = 118 v1wk9
• Gave it to the BD since it had more sales than the DVD.
Active Raid 2nd v1 = 1,719 current
• 1,364 total minus 1,283 (v1wk1 BD) = 81 v1wk1 DVD
From the Oricon website release lists. Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Crystal Season 3 Vol.3 ranked exactly the same as Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru! Vol.1.

Really sux to see that Alderamin sold so badly……
I noticed we have Brotherhood and Films Collections FF XV.
Don’t tell me Kingsglaive alone “sold” that bad to not even be mentionned?
Kingsglaive is a CG film, not an anime, so it’s not covered by this site.
Nevermind, found it on MAL. Kingsglaive (BD only): 3,356.
