Summer update:
Arslan s2 v1 sells 1556/1417, total 2,973. Event ticket. 2.6/23.6% overestimated.
Mononokean v1 sells 796/1336, total 2,132. Event ticket. 112.8/99.4% underestimated. More than doubled its estimate.
B-Project v1 adds 768/1371, total 15,490. Healthy 2k wk2.
Spring update:
Kiznaiver v4 sells 379/156, total 535.
Re:Zero v3 adds 294 BDs, total 9,426. Okay, had a big wk2 but this is a smaller wk3 than the others so it’s slowing down now. Might still reach 10k before it misses the top 100 though, especially if it gets a bump with v4.
Delta v2 adds 243 BDs, total 9,302. Likely to miss 10k this vol without yearly rankings or a boost later.
Past seasons:
Phantom World v6 sells 1610/292, total 1,902.
Osomatsu-san v7 adds 195 DVDs, total 45,678.
v8, final volume, adds 622/955, total 42,673. Series average: 64,696.
OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Euphonium Movie sells 4958/442, total 5,400.
Anonatsu BD Box sells 418. This is a cheaper re-release, the box was previously released with an OVA in 2014 and sold 3,023.
Garupan Movie adds 357 BDs, total 223,947.
Kizumonogatari Movie 1 adds 278 LE BDs, total 50,189.

As usual I’ll add the “other” section when I do the full ranking but that Touken Ranbu live stage play sold an insane 42,417 week 1. This is not necessarily indicative at all of how the anime will sell, but it damn well proves the franchise has a very high ceiling. At a minimum it will include an event ticket and have at least one huge volume, you can bet on that. I’m not sure how it being split into two different series airing in different seasons will affect it. The Fall one is a more laid back series, the more serious one is in Winter.
As always, it comes down to how the anime is executed. If done well, then we will probably have another mega hit incoming for 2016. If it is done poorly, then sales will probably be lower than their potential as we’ve seen with KanColle.
To be fair, KanColle didn’t really take advantage of their fanbase with the anime. They could’ve easily bundled more lucrative bonuses onto the BDs such as serial codes for exclusive shipgirls in the browser game, or something along those lines. No doubt Touken Ranbu is going to take advantage of their fanbase with event tickets as you mentioned in your post.
Man, it’s going to be an absolute embarrassment for the production company for KanColle if they’re completely outdone by Touken Ranbu. How the heck are they going to handle the upcoming movie or S2?
It is worth reiterating that while Kancolle didn’t sell as much as we thought it could (should?), at over 19k it’s still in the top ~4% of all series sales-wise.
The only reason this isn’t considered an unqualified success is that it arguably had the strongest starting position of any otaku-focused adaptation in recent years. It was one of the (or just the?) only series to dethrone Touhou at large fan events and the game userbase is massive and exactly in the 20-something male anime otaku strike zone.
So it’s a tricky show to talk about. These days in particular it’s very hard to scoff at a nearly 20k-seller when we struggle to see anything not involving idols and/or tons of popular male seiyuu hit 10k. But on the other hand… yeah, if any new (to anime) franchise was going to be huge, it really should have been Kancolle, but they really didn’t impress a lot of the fanbase. It has a weird legacy.
>They could’ve easily bundled more lucrative bonuses onto the BDs such as serial codes for exclusive shipgirls in the browser game
No, they couldn’t. It would be a total opposite of what KanColle is. KanColle is completely different from all the other browser/mobile games precisely because it doesn’t use such scam tactics.
Drifters might become a big hit in Autumn. Two Blu-ray box went straight into Amazon top 25 and it’s still one month prior to broadcast first episode!
Oh, hah, I was wondering what the hell that was. My focus on new shows each season has been increasingly narrow as I use a site (livechart.me) that I’ve set to auto-hide any show I mark as “not watching”. When I first saw it on Stalker I just assumed it was a BD box of some really old series, sort of like that Crusher Joe BD box that’s doing very well right now.
Drifters will get an audience if for no other reason than because the original manga is from the author of Hellsing (it’s also been in publication for a quite a while – since 2009). That doesn’t guarantee disc sales, of course, especially if it’s a poor adaptation, but it probably has a higher potential ceiling than the average series.
Well, it was just solicited 3 days ago, and the first 3 episodes were pre-broadcast on the same day. I think it’s too early to say it’ll be a big hit (20K+) considering it seems to be just the initial rush of pre-orders from people who may have viewed this pre-broadcast.
Pre-broadcast would certainly explain it. G Reco had a huge boost early on as well thanks to that, before settling into much more mundane territory.
Drifters OVA bundled with last manga volume sold over 50k. Also it’s a single BD box. Maybe not 20k but has a very good chance to break 10k line.
B-Pro got a nice second week, so I’m happy with that. ReZero is still looking good as well. Here’s to another volume close to reaching 10k!
There’s not much else from summer I care to keep track of sales wise, except Mob Psycho 100, but I highly doubt that will see the same success as OPM. As long as it gets to like 7k I’ll be happy. Also New Game! sales may be interesting to see. Next season I’m keeping an eye out for TouRabu and Yuri!!! on Ice. TouRabu should perform well, but Yuri!!! on Ice may be a bit of a gamble. We’ll see what happens!
Mob Psycho is sitting at a 5k v1 estimate with event ticket. It’s possible v1 might get to 7k but probably not average.
New Game has a 5.5k estimate, but also with event ticket, and a v1 artbox. Same deal there, might have a decent v1 but I think there’s a good chance both shows end up below a 5k average.
Mob Psycho probably is underestimated. Looking at other fujoshi buying series like B-Project and Fukigen na Mononokean it is entirely possible it can sell 3k-4k more than current estimation.
Mob Psycho doesn’t rank all that highly at Animate tho. Both formats usually hover around #100. I just checked it daily back until late August and at no point did either format clear the 90s. Even New Game! has been hanging around in the 80s, albeit only with one format.
Now, since it’s split roughly evenly across DVD and BD that could add up to more than it appears, but an 8-9k wk1 seems high for the rankings it’s currently doing. Not impossible, just not likely.
B-Project was fairly underestimated because it ranked quite well at Animate. Mononokean was severely underestimated because its Amazon rankings were so absolutely dismal that even mediocre storefront sales easily crushed the estimate. Mob Psycho by contrast has been ranking decently well on Amazon, making heavy underestimation a lot harder to achieve without equivalent Animate success.
No I am talking about vol 1 total sale. Stray Dogs didn’t perform particularly well at Animate either. Yet It crossed 8k. Mob Psycho actually went up to top 40 few times. Fujoshi don’t only buy from Animate either.
v1 could do 8k total, yes. The 5k estimate (like all Stalker estimates) I cited was only for week 1. Stray Dogs made the Animate Top 50 quite often. 55 times total with one or more formats over 3.5 months, so about every other day. Mob Psycho has only gotten there 4 times so far over seven weeks.
I know women don’t only shop at Animate but Animate is the biggest retailer for anime outside of Amazon, and doing well there is most likely to result in underestimation by Amazon Ranking Stalker.
I’m so glad Mononokean managed 2k…even if it’s an event ticket volume. These days even 2k is something to be grateful for.
Ugh arslan s2 sales are quite low already with the 1st volume so can expect around 2k average in the end. I thought it would atleast sell 5k~ since in jpn pools it was always somewhere in the top10 as anticipated etc, really hope that even with this poor sales we still get someday the 3rd season but honestly it makes me worried since 1st season was 24ep and then only 8ep for the 2nd and it also left us hanging right befor the big war started >_<.
Re.Zero sales are bit droppin but i think v3 will still reach the 10k mark and i think v4 could reach it aswell since i saw at their twitter site that it has a rem&subaru cover might lure some more of the shippers to get that :P
Overall though pretty empty week i really wonder how it will look at the extended list might be some there that sold around 150~200.
I doubt the SubaRem cover will make more people buy it but it is true that after the cover was revealed the disc jumped a bunch of positions and it’s been in the top 100 since. The ending of the anime has more chances of boosting its preorders up (in fact, I’m 100% sure it will and it will surely affect the other volumes too).
Hardcore shippers still have to buy all the volumes if they want to participate of the raffle for Rem AU’s LN anyway.
Yeah and there is also LN v9 coming out soon and after 1month then also v10 so while the hype is still strong it should sell good that aswell i really do hope the discs can hold on to the 10k average mark would be really a nice success for such a great anime :)
Updated for the full list.
Additions from the per-series ranking for the week of 2016-08-29:
Macross Delta v1 = 13,407 current
• 1,307 total minus 1,201 (v2wk2) = 106 BD v1wk7
>no additions in full list
>only v4 is in top200
Seems like dream is dead for now.
Re:Zero 10k? It was a long shot to begin with but yeah if it’s going to happen, I can’t see it being without the yearly lists. The average as of right now is a touch under 10.5k with six volumes still remaining. And I don’t get the feeling can be climactic enough (based on the current trajectory of the arc) to push a ton of people on the fence into a big rush of orders. Should get some boost, but nothing big.
I think you could be in for a surprise. I was so sure there’d be a tribute to A Dog Of Flanders, and that ended up not happening. The ending of this season could be something huge.
Yeah, exactly my feelings. When ep15 and 18 were happening it looked possible but not anymore. It being >10k is basically guaranteed with yearlies but it’s just as guaranteed to fall short without their help.
