Spring update:
Macross Delta v1 sells 8742/1257, total 9,999. 21.9/31.5% overestimated. Can you think of a better “fuck you” from the anime sales gods than this? Not even Delta’s event ticket volume (a series that’s crossed 100k for some of its music, mind you, and thus should have some major ticket appeal), the best hope of this awful sales season, can quite manage a 10k wk1. And to be rather overestimated too, ouch. Nine volumes with a sub-10k event ticket v1wk1? I… am really not confident even Delta can manage a 10k this season. What a farce this season is.

Flying Witch v2 sells 2926/327, total 3,253. Up 10.1% from v1wk1. This is what passes for great news in this Madokami-forsaken hellscape of a season devoid of all light or hope. I do not see an event ticket or other special unique extra listed for v2, so this just seems like a straight up increase. I think it’s very safe to assume v1 had wk3+ data that added a considerable amount that we’ll never see thanks to the extended rankings being dead, and is likely still higher. But officially anyway, v2 only needs 400 next week to beat v1, which is very rare. It might not sell that much but even ranking at all with about 200 would put the drop at almost nothing. I’ll take what tiny, tiny victories I can get, I guess.

Super Lovers v2 sells 1040/1259, total 2,299. Down 18.8% from v1wk1.

Bakuon!! v2 sells 1783/386, total 2,169. Down 23.3% from v1wk1.

Netoge v2 sells 1522/339, total 1,861. Down 18.6% from v1wk1.

Tanaka-kun v2 sells 673/383, total 1,056. Down 35.4% from v1wk1, and considering it very very likely won’t rank wk2 down exactly 50.0% from v1 total.

Conrevo s2 v2 sells 440 as a BD-only release. Up 4.3% from v1wk1, though that’s only 18 discs.

Re:Zero v1 adds 473 BDs, total 9,666. 10k next week? Especially seems likely with a bump from people buying v1 along with v2. Only needs 334 more.

HeroAca v2 adds 254 BDs, total 3,248.
v1 adds 166 BDs, total 5,784. We know this because the per-series ranking said 3331 for the week of 7/11 which leaves 168 for v1wk3 BD after v2wk1 sold 2994 and v1wk3 DVD sold 169.

Sansan v2 adds 267, total 2,144.
v1 adds 249 BDs, total 3,338. We know this because the per-series ranking said 2126 for the week of 7/11 which leaves 249 for v1wk3 after v2wk1 sold 1877. Granted some of those 249 could be DVD but, uh, I doubt it (they wouldn’t have made the top 300).

Winter update:
PSO2A v5 sells 1737/431 BDs, 382/2280 DVDs, total 4,830. RE BDs might add another 300. Best wk1 sales so far, for a show clearly bring driven entirely by whatever extras are in a volume. This show has such a weird sales progression.

Dagashi Kashi v5 sells 1,141 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

AoKana v5 sells 940 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Dimension W v5 sells 662 as a BD-only release.

Koyomimonogatari adds 448 LE BDs, total 29,940.

Grimgar v5 adds 271 BDs, total 3,548.

Past seasons:
G Tekketsu v8 sells 5229/617, total 5,846.

Lupin Pt4 v8, final volume, sells 1531/571, total 2,102. Series average: 2,348.

Haikyuu s2 v7 adds 935/814, total 11,764.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
High Speed sells 14642 BDs, 9677/822 DVDs, total 25,141. 9.9%/6.4% underestimated LE, 43.9% overestimated RE. All i all, not that impressive. Smaller wk1 than the first three volumes of s1 despite the event ticket and being, you know, a movie. Also pretty small Animate effect, which isn’t surprising given its ranking there wasn’t amazing, all things considered.

Outbreak Company BD Box sells 412.

Garupan Movie adds 1338 BDs, 315 DVDs, total 219,996. Edit: Per-series ranking for the week of 07/11 lists 3,200 sold, which means 171 RE BDs, which means the new total is 220,167. Edit2[/x]: Per-series ranking for the week of 7/18 lists 1,800 sold, which means 147 RE BDs, which means the new total is [x]220,314[/x].
OVA adds 273 BDs, total [x]66,004[/x].
I’m not sure how much longer the movie can keep up these >1.5k weeks (1653 this week) especially because it relies on DVDs continuing to rank (and it’s amazing they still are) but 220k is in the bag and… maybe… 230k? I can’t see that happening until the yearly rankings though, given there’s no extended rankings anymore. Yearlies will obviously include the LE BD, ought to cover the DVD, and might even fill in a number of weeks for the RE BD (though that’ll account for minimal gains). At any rate the tail on this has been fantastic, with 40k discs added from wk2-9. That’s the longest tail I’ve seen for a late night anime movie and it’s got at least 5k more in it, I’d have to assume.

re: zero will be in the full list?

  2. Avatar Dingo says:

At least for Macross the music and toys are still selling well, with the album selling 80k and the single 30k. Still these BD sales are depressing overall. I’m not even confident LL Sunshine will do that well despite how great the series has done so far in terms of sales.

    • Avatar Random says:

      >At least for Macross the music and toys are still selling well, with the album selling 80k and the single 30k.

Macross Album reached 100K. The OP/ED single is at 58-59K.

  3. Avatar BlackPoint says:

Damn thoose macross sells 9,999 xDDDD But ugh i was almost sure it would sell atleast around 15k~ but seeing how it hardly managed to sell 10k just really makes me think that there arent that many ppl out there that are prepared to spend lots of money on bd or dvd volumes.

  4. Avatar natapori says:

Do you think High Speed! BD/DVD sell is succeed of fail for movie that has ticket sell about 700 Million Yen? And even include event ticket still about 24K .Impossible to get 30K on total sell?

    • something something says:

It can get to 30k total. But I still feel like these are mildly disappointing sales considering what the franchise has pulled down in the past for regular TV series volumes.

    • We honestly don’t know the amount that were shipped to retailers (which are the numbers that really matter) nor the amount that are sold through the KyoAni Shop (which exceeded expectations and caused some orders to be delayed). I wouldn’t be surprised if it was over 30k sold and likely over 35-38k shipped out.

It’s also something brand new compared to the TV series, which likely scared off some people who wanted to see more of (insert non-Haruka/Makoto character here) and introduced many new characters compared to the previous works. The name value alone doesn’t mean it’s exactly the same as the Free! TV series.

  5. Avatar John says:

What are the chances of ‘Re:Zero’ or any other spring show surpassing ‘Delta’ and becoming the top seller of the season?

    • Avatar Lloyd says:

Unlikely. Macross still has a second and probably third week to follow up which should at least give it the 12-13k ( not that it makes this entire situation any better ).

Re:Zero and JoJo will break the 10k sooner or later ( Re:Zero might do it earlier since it’s closer to 10k and has its second volume as well as the heavily advertised episode 18 coming up )

Regardless of the disastrous numbers for Macross it’ll be the best selling show this spring and for at least volume 2. I’m actually not even sure whether it will have the highest average since this was an event ticket volume 1 and the ticket drop could be brutal.

      • Avatar Lloyd says:

for at least volume 1* sorry

      • something something says:

Someone was mentioning that an event ticket was also included in one of the CDs, and I’m curious if that’s the same ticket included in the BDs. If it is, then I can definitely see the event ticket bump for v1 (aka drop for v2) being very small. If you’re just a ticket buyer, why buy a ¥8k BD when you could buy a much cheaper CD and still get the same shot at a ticket? Int hat case, other volumes should sell close to this level and it shouldn’t drop too much…

…But if this was an event ticket application unique to the BD then that doesn’t apply and, uh, yeah, um. I really wonder what the other volumes will sell.

Still, Delta -probably- ought to come out on top. If either Re:Zero or Jojo were six volume shows, I would say Delta could be topped. But Re:Zero is 9 like Delta and Jojo is a million volumes so Jojo won’t beat it and Re:Zero only have a very small chance.

But who knows maybe Delta will drop to like 7k next volume and then oops, RIP. Because Re:Zero will probably hold up with pretty minimal drops for the first few volumes at least.

        • Avatar Random says:

It’s the same event ticket: http://macross.jp/delta/walkure/event.html but you have mroe chance with the Bluray.

I can see it decreasing for others reasons. From the stalker point, it seems it’s the case.

        • Avatar Ejc says:

Actually I had a discussion over this with Hpulley and symbv a few weeks ago. The event ticket on the CD album was a later addition for an afternoon session at the Tokyo concert. Originally there were 3 concerts to be held at Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo.

This later addition of an afternoon session at the Tokyo concert is only open to BD buyers and CD album buyers. The one thing I don’t get, is how did the CD album sell so much more than the BD, when only 300 of the 2300~2400 capacity of the concert venue are reserved for CD buyers? I would’ve thought people would go for the BD instead, since they have a much much higher chance of securing the right to buy a ticket to the concert. It’s so baffling…

          • something something says:

I guess the CD is so much cheaper that it’s more amenable to impulse buys. But it sounds like the CD ticket may have bled off some BD ticket buyers, but not by a ton. so it could still see a significant ticket drop, but probably not a huge one… We’ll see!

  6. Avatar FreFre says:

    >Macross Delta v1, total 9,999
Not even 10k. It’s over, anime sales are dead.
Thankfully creators of Macross knows it and that’s why they went full ham with music. 17 episodes so far and we got 17 different Walkure songs (it even beats LL and IM@S in that regard). With LL Sunshine, B-Project and the next UtaPri the era of idols is upon us.

  7. Avatar Anon says:

9,999… I’m speechless, bitter season till the very end.

Re:Zero vs. Delta is a go.

  8. Avatar Mami Kawada Lover says:

    >AoKana v5 sells 940 BDs, DVDs do not rank.
    It hurts.

  9. Avatar Mari says:

The music CD sales and other stuff like model kits for Macross Delta should make up for it, right?

    • Avatar Jim says:

It’ll help some – let’s just say that the series probably isn’t going to lose money overall unless its committee was unusually generous with the production budget – but when you look at the fact that this puts Delta on pace to do only about 20-25% of Frontier’s DVD/BD sales average (which was about 46k), they couldn’t possibly sell enough Delta merchandise to make up that big of a revenue drop from the disc sales.

  10. Avatar Random says:

    > Not even Delta’s event ticket volume (a series that’s crossed 100k for some of its music, mind you, and thus should have some major ticket appeal), the best hope of this awful sales season, can quite manage a 10k wk1

    With the copy i imported, it’s 10k :).

    • Avatar hpulley says:

I also imported it so at least 10001 LOL

Great package too BTW, lovely box illustration (box 1 of 3), 4 versions of the 1st episode, both ABC part and musical versions of the chapters so you can skip to the musical parts, other bonus features. It looks absolutely beautiful, sounds amazing. Not enough… I’m not sure what it takes to get good sales these days.

  11. Avatar willy20798 says:

may i ask you a question? why wasn’t jojo in the past week’s list

    • something something says:

Because it was outside of the top 100 for the week. It was released a month ago, and most discs only rank for 1-3 weeks. The next volume releases on 7/27, so its data will be reported in the 08/02 list.

  12. Avatar Painn says:

I wanna see how much kizumonogatari sells

  13. Avatar AholePony says:

I know it’s not probably related but in a year or three if you plotted sales on a simple line graph you’d see this crazy spike for Osomatsu-san and then in it’s wake hardly anything, just a wasteland of 5k and under avg. sellers lol. If sales were never to recover (not realistic but you never know when streaming will really catch on in Japan, if ever), it would be like a spent star, dying in a last flash

    • something something says:

My understanding is that streaming is relatively robust in Japan already. It’s just not hypercentralized the way it is in 2-3 services like in North America.

  14. Avatar anon no.21 says:

At least Macross Delta sold very well overall (the music and figures sold well) compared with IBO (BD average only 9,429, gunpla sales falling)

  15. Avatar Shazam says:

What about big order?I heard first box has 5 episodes.

    • something something says:

Yeah, it’s coming out in 2 BD boxes or 5 DVD singles. The singles can be ignored, and the BD boxes, uh… well, it might rank in the full list… maybe. (It’ll sell a couple hundred.)
