Hmm well at this point i think it is safe to say that non of the spring titles will have a 10k average ..except maybe macross.
Well from one point..this is definitely a very weak season with not a lot of over 10k sellers which shows that it has really dropped. on the other hand if u look closely..this time there is actually a very even spread of sales between titels . previous season you had like one or two high sellers and than a massive drop…but this spring season there is actually quite an equal diversity in sales for a lot of titles.with 5 titles in the 7 to 8 k and another 5 titles above 3k to 5 k range which is not bad.
What i am trying to say is that with so many titles being released and yet we have quite a few decent sellers i think at this point you can defintly agree that the anime production industry at this stage has reached what we call the equilibrium stage.
I’m not sure what you mean by “equilibrium” here. If this were a healthy season (compare it to Springs, not Winters!) we’d have the same number of 5k+ sellers but also a couple 10k+ sellers.
2010 Spring v1s (22 series)

2011 Spring v1s (32 series)

2015 Spring v1s (34 series)

Total: 13 (38.2%)
———-
2016 Spring v1s (24/34 series)
0/0 = 20k+
0/1 = 10-19k
6/7 = 5-9k
Total: 6/8 (23.5%)
For 2016, first number is what we know so far, second number is final predictions.
For remaining v1s I’m assuming Delta crosses 10k and Joker Game crosses 5k. I can’t see anything else making it to 5k v1. It is possible that up to three of the current 8k titles could juuuuust barely eek out a 10k vol 1 (especially Re:Zero, which I think is likely, followed by Haifuri and maybe Jojo) but it’d be super marginal and it wouldn’t change the overall total of 8 over 5k. And those three sure won’t get 10k averages, which is the more important statistic.
No matter how you look at it, Spring 2016 is simply not good. The “strong middle” is a mirage, as it’s really just a collapse at the top that dropped the “top” into what would be other seasons’ “middle”. And Spring 2016 comes with absolutely no “smash hit” tier, which is something publishers need to make up for all the flops and average-sellers.
The only recent season with a comparable percentage of Vol. 1s making the 5k mark is 2012, and 2016 still compares badly to it considering 2012 had a 46k, a 23k, and two 10-11ks.
There’s just no way to spin this in a positive light, as far as I can see.
What i am trying to say is that there is so much new anime series released per season now compared to the average of the previus years and anime still being an expensive medium to buy it is becoming to a point where the market has an equilebrium flow..which in a buisness sense it means that it is close to a thin line that would soon crash in on itself and we will see a huge market crash becasue the market would be to much saturated…this years spring season shows that it is at the very end of the thin line.
if this continuous we could see a huge anime bubble crash except this time it will be in japan itself..you have to admit that the anime market in japan has risen to much..with to man7y studios to many anime..no reduced pricing and a very limited market. granted anime is huge there but there is limit as wel as how much of a product you can sell. you get what i mean?
I was replying more to the idea that this season is doing okay because of the number of 5-9k titles, when it actually looks really bad to me. But yes I do think there is too much anime being made, and feel it’s probably unsustainable.
Gatmar is right and the first section of anime likely to crash is ecchi harem section. They have become like nobody cares about them.It will be evident from next year most probably.Only 1 or no ecchi anime being released like this. Why don’t they try to promote manga and LN through other means. Then anime industry will not be required at all.
I imagine they would do better if they looked better. Just compare a typical ecchi anime to other shows, difference is apparent. Most of them air on AT-X which is garbage so studio don’t even try to create high quality video. If they air elsewhere, the censorship is usually awful (forgetting about light beams covering half of the screen, even on BDs situations are tamer than in manga, especially when it comes to lolis) and there’s often low effort put in drawing uncensored parts. What’s the point of buying ecchi anime if it doesn’t look good? People prefer purchasing source material, figs or other merchandise.
There’s something fundamental that needs to change in Japanese mindset for ecchi to recover and attain its full glory but I wouldn’t expect that happening anytime soon (hint: Olympics). No matter how much we complain though, we should remember that Japan is the only country which provides us with so many of those shows and I will be forever grateful. It’s just that so much more could be done.
One other problem i have also have noticed is that once a particuler type of story with a particuler trend within gets a huge success it will be followed by a lot of series that more or less repeat the same thing.
Take this year for example since we got Erased we have gotten a lot of shows that focus on either going back in time or repeating or rewind there past in some form to correct their past mistakes to make fresh start..while differnet approaches it is more or less the same for example:
-Erased,
-Re:Zero
-Rewrite
-Orange
-Rewind
Than we also have this trend of either being transported or reincarnated to an alternate world setting which even a fan like me of the fantasy genre has become way to stale..the sheer amount fo titles like released since last years is out of control
-Overlord
-Grimgal of Fantasy and Ash
-Is it Wrong to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon
-Konosuba
-Re:Zero
-Endride
-No Game No Life
-Gate: Thus the Jsdf Fough There
-Rokka no Yuusha
We also have so many Sprots anime lately
-Free!
-Kuruko no Baskett
-Prince of Stride
-Haikyuu
-Days
-All Out
-Diamond No Ace
Not to mention the biggest i am seeing with Anime..is the trend that has palgued hollywood movies since the starts of the 2010’s making remakes, sequals, spin offs to older generation titles are making a comeback so long just so they can have more revenue on a franchise that has already proven to be succesfull once before
-Sailor Moon
-Dragon Ball
-CArdcapor Sakura
-Full Metal Panic
-Tenchi Muyo
-Utawearurumo
-Heroic Legend of Arslan( This had an ova series in the 90’s as well for your info)
-Black Butler
-D.Gray Man
-Berserk
– Hunter X Hunter Remake
-Ushio to Tora (90’s manga)
-Parasyte ( 90’s manga)
-Hidan no Aria AA spin off
-Soul Eater Not spin off
– Lupin III
– Fafnr of Exodus
– Durarara X2
etc
Basically to many of the same materials and to many series that focus on a particular set of genres…the industry needs a revamp and more focus should be place on more originality…quality rather than quantity … re-structure…change in the buisness strategy…as well as more focus on global interest not just local.
Thing is, first half of Re:zero was already done before erased even started airing, at least for the most part. Others were also already in production at that stage. If anything, they were inspired by Steins;Gate.
Fantasy point is much stronger though.
Trends aren’t a new thing. What the specific trends are just change over time, and an increased numbers of shows being made will of course proportionally increase the size of any given trend. To the extent it’s a problem, I see it as a symptom of the overproduction of anime, not one of the causes.
This might be a bit of stretch to find….but compared to the average amount of series being released like say 2005 to the amount now in 2016…exactly how much of an increase in anime production are we talking about here?
Ejc posted the numbers recently:
Total series, 1990-2014: https://www.someanithing.com/4954/comment-page-1#comment-69075
Shorts per year, 2004-2014: https://www.someanithing.com/4954/comment-page-1#comment-69137
We hit triple digits in 2003, and 2014 topped 200. Looking at livechart.me, I counted 215 for 2015. 2016 is 206 but Fall isn’t fully announced yet.
Shorts account for some of the difference, but only to a point. They suddenly started becoming more common around 2011. Split cour also is a factor, as some of those might have been single two-cour seasons in the past. But the total minutes of anime on TV are still going up.
Thx…this also explains for me why a lot of series have been coming out split cour lately and not many show get passed two cours much anymore….the sometime are so overbooked they have to make split into a later date to meet the demand…but even than there is a limit…give it some time between now to 2018..we will see a heavy change within the industry. for worse rather than better.
I don’t think securing broadcast slots is the main reason (possibly it’s a reason, I don’t know) we see an increase in split cour shows. Probably has more to do with there being a lot of benefits for the committee:
• additional time between seasons to spread out work more
• ability to cancel a show halfway if it’s really underperforming or something else happens (though only really works if it’s not announced as split right at the start)
• ability to charge more for DVD/BDs (two cour is usually 7-9 discs, two split cour is 12-14; increased disc count easily beats the slightly higher MSRP of two cour discs)
Slightly lower risk, slightly higher reward, in theory anyway.
I can’t stay out of this discussion, because the amount of bull*hit is strong:
”One other problem i have also have noticed is that once a particuler type of story with a particuler trend within gets a huge success it will be followed by a lot of series that more or less repeat the same thing.
Take this year for example since we got Erased we have gotten a lot of shows that focus on either going back in time or repeating or rewind there past in some form to correct their past mistakes to make fresh start….”
– NUP! Erased wasn’t such a big success to start a trend. It had average sells, a little over 4k DVD’s, unlike SAO which sold 36k along with the almost 6 millions LN volumes at that point… Also Orange manga starte months before Erased.
”Than we also have this trend of either being transported or reincarnated to an alternate world setting which even a fan like me of the fantasy genre has become way to stale..the sheer amount fo titles like released since last years is out of control.”
– is true that the succes of SAO inspired lots of manga that follows games world, which in the end resulted in the concept with incarnation in game/fantasy world… there are so many manga and LN’s that is basically becoming a new genre (isekkai).
BUT, first erase from your list ”Is it Wrong to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon”, that is a Fantasy anime with RPG elements, it has no transportation in other world. Then erase Gate, which is also fantasy, but no transportation/incarnation… and definetly follows no trend. Then erase Rokka no Yuusha too, because that is the most ridiculous example you gave in the context. That is an adventure anime, there is no transportation, no reinacarnation, no RPG, I can’t understand why you mentioned it. Now that those 3 series meant to make your list seem bigger are out, we are left with 6 anime… SAO was launched in 2012, and the trend brought 6 anime in 4 years. Where the heck is the ”out of control situation”? Do you mean that 6 out of the +400 of the anime produced since 2012 are enought to saturate the market? You are ridiculous.
”We also have so many Sports anime lately.”
– Sports anime had allways been popular, they had been produced since pretty much the beggining of the Japanese animation. There are two genres that sell a lot in Japan: moe and sports.
”Not to mention the biggest i am seeing with Anime..is the trend that has palgued hollywood movies since the starts of the 2010’s making remakes, sequals, spin offs to older generation titles are making a comeback so long just so they can have more revenue on a franchise that has already proven to be succesfull once before.”
– this is the more ridiculous part of your comment. What is bad about sequels? Do you perhaps like unfinished anime? Dude I like many other had been waited for a new season of D Gray Man for 8 fricking years, and I/we pray for an actual remake too. And oh my gosh, those 11 years of waiting for Full Metal Panic where so damn long! While I didn’t others waited a long time for Berseker. Oh, and the current Heroic Legen of Arslan, is made after a manga that started its serialization in 2013 (for your info). So sequels are welcome.
The fact that old school manga’s get adaptations is also a good thing. There are lots of great old manga that didn’t got anime (Parasyte is a good example, and it was a blast), or that got only some short shitty OVA’s and get remakes now. I honetly hope that studios will be inspired by Parasyte and continue to do this… up till now, they didn’t do it, because it was too risky, as many of those manga’s are not ongoing anymore.
Little bit confrontational there, be careful about that. Nothing Gatmar said warrants name-calling.
“– Sports anime had allways been popular, they had been produced since pretty much the beggining of the Japanese animation. There are two genres that sell a lot in Japan: moe and sports.”
This comment was a bit odd. Sports have always been a popular -manga- genre, and they have some presence among children’s shows, but they hadn’t been a big part of late night anime, let alone selling lots of DVD/BDs. That’s only kicked into high gear recently as committees finally realized that there’s a strong contingent of female fans who really dig sports shows full of cute boys. So you get Free and Kurobas and Haikyuu and Yowapedal and that’s all a fairly recent development for sports anime.
As for “moe”, it’s not a genre so not much else to say there.
As something said, “moe” is not a genre. It is a feeling invoked by either the behaviour or look of a character or even an inanimate object.
The tanks in Girls und Panzer for example make military otaku feel “moe”, but I feel that many Westerners do not realise that pretty much every anime airing has some way of invoking the moe feeling for whoever is watching the said anime.
Kronpy..if u want to counter my arguments you have the right but to add insults to me personally i call that cyber bullying :(
First of when i say fantasy anime i am not just including transproted or reincarnated on there own..im talking about fantasy in general…it has always been present but the amount of fantasy series has skyrocketed in recent years and event those series such as danmachi is not transported, reincarnated series..the very fact it has rpg elements is a fact that it took inspiration from them and Gate is a transported to an alternate world…it in the name which is a gate to alternate world..meaning they transport themselves to alternate fantasy world.
Also like Something said…sports anime have only recently becoming in the highlight of late night slots…not to mention we have been seeing a lot more focus on series that cater to a female demographics as in the past you have to admit was mostly focused on the male demographic.
Also i never said that making seaquals is wrong or going back to the 90’s to make series is wrong..what i was trying to say…is that the industry is relying so much on old franchises to make ends meet, that they are not inspiring a lot of original material to come out and we are getting more series that follow trends rather than more original content..you have to admit that the late 90’s to early mid 00’s we had a lot of good shows that did not rely on current trends than we do now.
Someone needs to do a female sports show pronto and make a success out of it.
personally, I think bundling would work best.
Sure, you might have a great anime, but that still dosen’t open majority of people’s wallets. I’ve personally purchased probably 250-300k~ yen worth of bd and that probably covered me for little over half a dozen series is all while a majority of series that I also enjoy I don’t have the means to buy them all.
Put out something other than the bd contents itself that people may want.
(ie. priority event lottery, bd only physical merchandises, etc.)
The current prices are their standards, it is not likely lowering the price would help overall revenue.
Unrelated but afaik, Joker Games come only in BD Box Set. How to determine whether such box set sells well?
It’s not much different than evaluating singles. A good average for 2 boxes is the same as a good average for 6 singles, unless the total MSRP is wildly different. Usually box releases add up to being slightly cheaper than the equivalent number of singles, though generally within the normal range of singles prices.
Joker Game is ¥18,000 per box or ¥36,000 total MSRP tax excluded. That’s the equivalent of 6 x ¥6000 singles. Again, within the normal spread of singles prices, if maybe ever so slightly on the lower end.
Downside of boxes for publishers: Usually charging slightly less per episode. Less impulse buys.
Upside of boxes for publishers: Printing and shipping less units of product. Less or no volume on volume attrition due to 1-2 vols per cour vs 6-7.
It probably all more or less evens out. We’re seeing more shows come out in one cour, half cour, or third cour “boxes” but (6x, 3x, 2x as many eps as your usual single, respectively) but it’s still a small minority of releases, and it may never be more than that.
Ehh, Haifuri managed to outsell Re:zero in wk3 despite big difference in wk2? I must have underestimated it. On the other hand Re:zero jumped back to top50 after last episode (still hangs out in top100) so it has decent chance of ranking again. I also know it had quite a bit of stock problems. Fingers crossed for more sales.
so is jojo going to be on this one?
It’ll add 200-300 more BDs in the full list and get over 9k, I’d guess.
ok, thanks for the info
*fervently waiting for Joker Game sales*
i was thinking natsume would stopped on 7k /:
maybe on 6k?
if re:zero average will be on 7k or 8k is that very good?
I’d chop off the “very” and just say “good enough”. As DVD/BD go, it’d be perfectly solid sales, but not a break-out hit. Which is fine, because the novels got a big boost, it seems to be getting a lot of merch, and it’s the kind of title that will probably do reasonably well in the west for some additional revenue.
Overall it’s looking to be an unambiguously successful adaptation project.
The funny thing about the Kiznaiver sales is that the other Trigger animated title, Uchuu Patrol Luluco, is on pace to do better than 3.5K. I bet they never imagined their zany short would (in a completely unfair apples to oranges comparison) sell more than Kiznaiver.
Glad Sansha Sanyou barely scraped across 3k. Curious to see how big of an effect the event ticket is considering the seiyuu involves are not big names. Also, Garupan movie over 215k, and I see that’s it’s ranked #1 on Amazon right now, so I can’t see the tail ending anytime soon. How close is it to other top selling anime movies?
I don’t see it passing the Love Live Movie, but it could be close with this latest boost. I think this latest boost is due to the Aug 28 event ticket lottery acceptance period being from July 11 to July 17, so this boost may not last that long:

NOTE: additional sales from the Oricon extended rankings are not factored in, and the sales from the Macross Frontier Movies “Game Hybrid Pack” editions are not factored in too.
