The Free! event is so low compared to the previous release because from what I gather it’s the exact same event, just this time the daytime performance rather than the nighttime performance in the main release. So it wouldn’t be expected to sell much, just gravy at this point. Very unusual to see the earlier performance released separately some months later.
Fall update:
Haikyuu s2 v1 sells 8457/7768, total 16,225. 58/33% underestimated. That’s down from 24,711 s1v1wk1 (total 35,159) and both were event ticket volumes, so while this season will still sell a lot, it very well could be down almost 50% on s1’s 25,514 average.
Shingeki Chuu v1 sells 911/1182, total 2,093. 11% under/16% overestimated. Event ticket. Very high MSRP, ¥11800 BD and ¥9800 DVD. Four 17 minute episodes a disc, which I suppose does come out to more than your usual 50 minute disc but still seems a touch steep.
Yuru Yuri s3 v2 sells 3200/594, total 3,794. At first I was glad to see very little event ticket drop, but apparently v2 has a ticket as well, so a drop is still coming. Sigh. Not sure v2 will have the legs v1 did, but maybe it can get to 4.5k… v1 is at 5.3k after a 4.2k start. Then the rest barely over 3k I guess?
Lupin Part IV v2 sells 1688/563, total 2,251.
DanDevil v2 sells 909/890, total 1,799.
Owarimonogatari v1 adds 322 BDs, total 26,927.
Gochiusa s2 v1 adds 232 BDs, total 15,845.
One Punch Man v1 adds 763/194, total 11,177. I’m not sure why the bump, DVD wasn’t even top 300 last week and this wk4 BD is higher than wk2. Was it out of stock the previous week, maybe? Or somewhere had a sale? I could see a bump next week because of v2 releasing but I’m not sure what was behind this one.
K s2 v4 adds 434 BDs, total 3,523.
Summer update:
MonMusu v5 sells 3765/745, total 4,510. This show has been very consistent, with minimal per-volume drops. Will easily hold onto a 5k average.
Umaru-chan v5 sells 2918/535, total 3,453.
Working s3 v6 adds 236 BDs, total 3,879.
Past seasons:
Kyoukai no Rinne v7 sells 275, as a DVD-only release.
Ore Monogatari v8, final volume, sells 473/213, total 686. Series average: 711.
OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Persona 3 movie 3 sells 17396/530 BDs, 2830/297 DVDs, total 21,053. That’s compared to 23,746 wk1 for #2 and 29,445 wk1 for #1.
Little Witch Academia sells 3,752 as a BD-only release.
Love Live movie adds 536/56 LE/REs, total 231,818. REs from extended.
Garupan OVA adds 600 BDs, total 53,444 in wk48. Very close to the BDs alone topping 50k even though it’s well over that with DVDs added in.

And we finally get to see Osomatsu-san absolutely destroy everything this week.
Past seasons:
Kyoukai no Rinne v7 sells 275, as a DVD-only release.
Does this anime really sell that bad? o_O Cuz i thought it would do allot better since its getting a 2nd season this spring and probably also gonna have 24episodes just like 1st season.
They might as well have just done rental discs for rinne.
It airs in prime time (5:30PM) on NHK Educational TV (Japan public broadcasting), so disc sales probably weren’t expected or needed.
I see that might explain it then yeh cuz really surprised when i saw that nr :P
Why did not mention that Sound Horizon’s newest concert BD surpassed Nana Mizuki’s!!
I’m not too familiar with Sound Horizon, are they anisong- or seiyuu-related? I try to keep the “other” to seiyuu-related material, anime live action spinoff material (events, radio shows, etc), or concert discs from artists with heavy anisong background.
(With a lone exception for Miku because Miku is the most important thing in the universe and I’m tracking it for my own interests.)
Sorry for late reply. Sound Horizon aren’t anisong-related (although they are lead by Revo whose also known for Linked Horizon). However, usually, Revo hires popular anisong artists and seiyuus. The last release featured Yuki Kaji who did Eren in SNK. In addition to singers Minami Kuribiyashi and Yukka Nari (aka Fictionjunction YUUKA). Also, most of their albums are getting manga adoptions currently.
Next week a lot of shows come out should be fun
For OPM, I heard it was something related to stock problems. No idea if thats true.
Seems Osomatsu will be the big hit next week, and of 2015. 50k+ wk1 would not surprise me.
Winter is looking really bad tho.
*3.7k Teekyuu S7
*3.6k PSO2
*3.4k Divine Gate
*2.8k Prince of Stride
*2.6k Phantom world
*2.2k KonoSuba
*2.2k Shouwa Genroku
Below 2K,
Ajin
Dagashi Kashi
Ao no Kanata no Four Rhythm
Nurse Witch
Active Raid
Saijaku Muhai no Bahamut
Boku dake ga Inai Machi
AssClass S2
Dimension W
HaruChika
Koukaku no Pandora
Oshiete! Galko-chan
Sekkou Boys
Mahou Shoujo Nante Mou Ii Desukara
Norn9
I’m sure it won’t really come out this way in the end but it will be very funny if Teekyuu is the top selling anime of winter with the best sales of the franchise so far (S2 was a little below that, 3.5K).
OPM did indeed apologize to fans for V1 being out of stock as pointed out on MAL:
https://twitter.com/opm_anime/status/688690846632263680
Sorry, meant to add they apologized that V1 was out of stock but said a restock would occur before V2 came out. Seems like they were right, hence the bump before V2.
Okay that’s the most logical explanation, thanks.
We’ll just get 2 game adaptation(Divine gate/PSO2) top the average list at 3k at this rate lol.
It might end up better, or maybe not. Like how previously it seemed like a winter season would not have a 10k seller, then hoozuki came out of nowhere.
But I don’t think i’ve seen a season start of this badly since I started following sales(Autumn or summer 2012?)
It’s hilarious that the top-listed title there is one we know based on previous seasons will actually only sell ~1.5k.
Winter is such a clusterfuck so far.
Hmm…Well it is still to early to say exactly how they would sell….but considering the data of last year to this year in the same timeframe it is really surprising to see so many low sellers as of the moment not even a 5k average for one yet.
What i am also a bit shocked is how many of the top sellers are the ones that actually have the weakest recpetion both in the west and at home japan..especially divine gate as i heard it was a disaster and the ones that have the highest reception are selling so poor.
Thinking about it..Tekyuu already has a large fan base and both PSO2 and Divine Gate have a following cause of the games they adapt. I am realy hoping this is cause it still early into the season and that the sales figures actually improve..otherwise this winter season is not of to a good start for anime 2016.
Also i noticed that a few titles are not listed here yet? Such as GATE S2 and Grimgar…is that cause the pre-order number are not it yet?
I personally count Split cour series as 1 single one. The last volume of Gate that came out would be a better estimate of how the first volume with eps of the second half anyway.
Grimgar was not up yet on sunday, when I did this.
But its up now, at 1.8k
Damn. I wish it did better.
Well this was one of those seasons that didn’t have an obvious/immediate megahit in the lineup like a Kancolle or F/SN, so I’m not surprised there wasn’t an immediate pre-order rush on anything. History tells us at least one or two of these shows will break out, though – it seems like there’s almost always an Overlord or Saekano or Shirobako sitting in the 2-3k range in your initial estimate lists that ends up going over the 10k mark.
I guess we’ll see this season if people really do need to “buy something, anything!” or if they can mostly give a season a pass if necessary. Spring and summer are quite packed and there are popular shows on sale from previous seasons right now that they could buy instead of buying KonoSuba.
They just need to save all their money to buy Bakuon, and whenever New Game comes out.
In my dreams that is.
By “packed” do you mean there are a lot of shows in general for Spring, or a lot of shows that you would expect to sell discs? There may be quite a few interesting shows, but other than Jojo’s sequel is there anything else we should expect to sell a lot of discs?
For spring season, besides JoJo’s, I’d expect 10k+ sales for Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney, because the video game series is a well-known/popular/successful franchise, and Macross Delta, because it’s Macross and that’s a big deal. There are very few other franchises that could justify buying a 6 pm weekday timeslot to run a preview episode of their upcoming series three months before it officially premieres. Delta’s production committee did that, so you can be sure they’re confident it’ll do well. The last Macross series (Frontier) averaged 46k, and asking Delta to match that is probably unrealistic in today’s market, but it should still be one of the year’s top sellers.
A few potential wild cards for the spring season:
“Mayoiga.” It’s very, very difficult to predict before a season starts whether an original series is going to turn into a hit, but this one has a strong creative team behind it with Tsutomu Mizushima directing and Mari Okada writing, and a good animation studio in Diomedia. So we’ll see.
“My Hero Academia.” This is a Weekly Shonen Jump manga, so it’s debuting with some hype and a built-in audience. I’m not necessarily expecting big BD sales – JoJo’s aside, WSJ titles rarely move huge numbers of discs and this isn’t one of their biggest selling manga anyway. On the other hand, MHA is an action/superhero type series, and we’ve seen that those are capable of selling really well if they’re done really well (see One Punch Man or Blood Blockade Battlefront last year). Bones is adapting this one, so at the very least we can reasonably expect it to look good.
“Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto” has had very strong, high six-figure manga sales (and just ended after only four volumes, so we may actually get a complete anime adaptation), and has consistently been at or near the top of “What manga do you want to see an anime adaptation for?” polls in Japan the last couple of years. It’s also being directed by Shinji Takamatsu, who has a great track record with adapting comedy manga (he also directed School Rumble, Daily Lives of High School Boys, and the first series of Gintama). Biggest reason to worry: Deen is animating it.
16k for Haikyuu, huh..
I guess the fujobucks went to Osomatsu san instead or something, I was hoping v1 could break 20k. Oh well, 16k is still better than what most shows can do.
What happened to ore monogatari!!! Its quite a popular series and such low sales?
Where have you been? Popular in both Japan and with English speaking fans, yes, but a shoujo manga to anime selling well? Not gonna happen. Yona and maybe Shirayukihime are doing decent for shoujo adaptations though.
Still waiting for my Fukumenkei Noise and Last Game anime…
And what is BD%?If its 82% for TLR darkness then does it mean it sold 82% of the total released bds??
Are you referring to the the series averages by year page?
The percentages there mean that of all the sales reported for a show, a certain percentage were in BD format and a certain percentage in DVD format. Though some shows only come in one format or the other, the vast majority are sold in both.
In TLR:Ds2’s case, 82% of its 6,039 average was due to BD (4,966 = 82% of 6,039 vs. 1,073 aka 18% from DVD).
I know this site only tracks BD/DVD sales, but do any of you know if Osomatsu san’s first ED is the all-time bestselling anime single (performed by only voice actors)? Or is that title still held by Love Live? Thanks.
For seiyuu units, Houkago Tea Time from K-ON! and μ’s from Love Live have done way better. K-ON!’s ED, Don’t say “lazy” sold 191,306 copies while Love Live Movie’s 1st single sold 132,416 copies as of the most recent week. When you compare the 6th week figure of the Love Live single with the 6th week figure (which is the most recent week) Osomatsu-san single, it is around 22,000 copies ahead.
Is it safe to say Osomatsu san’s single is the top-seller for a male seiyuu unit then? Or did Utapri also have a single that sold more than 100k?
I don’t recall Utapri ever hitting the 100k line (Maji Love 2000% got to 77,330), so Osomatsu-san may well be the top for a male unit.
Full list posted. Extended probably on Saturday.
What is about Noragami season 2 sales?
Got delayed a while back. Doesn’t come out until February 19th.
thank you.
Come one osomatsu san! I know it will do well, I actually want to buy the BD’s but I have no idea if it has eng subs, it probably doesn’t.
