Upcoming Releases for 2016 01/11 – 01/17 Anime DVD List
2016/01/13 Working!!! v6
2016/01/13 K Return of Kings v4
I’d call it a dead week but it can’t be with this very important release coming:
2016/01/13 Hatsune Miku Magical Mirai 2015 in Nippon Budoukan
♥
I’m so proud of you, Stamyu. Even if it’s just volume 1, that’s amazing considering how it started. I just have to pray that v3+ drop to 4k and not lower.
Is that kurobas s3 average or kurobas average for the whole 3 seasons?
Waiting for Osomatsu san. I want to see how well it does, that thing is huge.
>Shomin Sample v1 sells 910/331, total 1,241. 1/25% overestimated. Another one for the dead pile for Fall.
Well, at least it managed to sell over a thousand. Could have been far worse.
I don’t know about “far” worse. 1k probably shouldn’t be where we set the bar!
At least it did better than Jitsu Wa Watashi Wa, another series that had that early ’00s harem comedy feeling. Just doesn’t seem to be much appetite for this type of series these days. Harems need to be set in fantasy (read: magical high school) setting or more slice of life to get the sales, or at least it seems that way to me.
I meant it had been predicted to sell as low as 500-600 discs at some point and it did double that. So there’s that.
Well, the Stalker estimate is not that useful unless it is closer to release date… so it actually did as expected on BD.
Pretty much only Rakudai did well from this 3 Rakudai/Taimadou/Shomin Sample which came out this Fall by SilverLink even tho Rakudai could have done better i think atm its around 3,5k sells probably, btw if we just look at DVD & BD sells how much does some anime need to sell to call it a success or even that it did good enough to cover its costs probably around 5k~ or?
We don’t know the break-even points for shows, and even estimating it is impossible due to how different every show is. Here are two comments I’ve made in the past about this:
https://ask.fm/somekindofthing/answers/132324572846
https://www.someanithing.com/sales-faqguide/comment-page-2#comment-62192
The most critical point is that not every company investing in an anime cares about DVD/BD sales, so those alone can’t determine a break even point. They are important (the video disc publisher is also usually the biggest investor), but not equally so for everyone on the committee.
If you want to cover all theoretical production costs for an anime with disc sales alone (ignoring the production committee structure and all the other complexities of reality) you need to sell a LOT of discs. Like well over 10k average in most cases.
But anime is not expected to cover all production costs with video discs alone. That’s why sequels are common at even half those sales and shows can flop in disc sales but still make certain investors very happy (e.g. Gakkou Gurashi has poor disc sales but Houbunsha has to be loving how much the manga sales increased, from barely selling at all to shipping >200k a volume).
Thank you for taking your time to explain me this abit more i figured this would have been probably asked around often but since iam new here i just kinda gambled and asked so i really appreciate that you took your time to explain this and even gave some links which ill check right way now. So once again thx and have a nice day :)))
P.S Also seems iam pretty blind person didnt see that tab at homepage for Sales FAQ G_G *headshoot* …………..
Gundam IBO not on list anymore? only 9k sales and considered flop. You know Gundam franchise suffered decline in series quality since AGE (except Unicorn), even Gundam IBO still a lackluster
G Tekketsu v1 is up to 10,671. The preliminary threshold this week being 556 I’m not too surprised it didn’t make it, as this is its third week, not second. I guess it’ll add about 400 this week and hit 11k.
But yeah TV Gundam hasn’t come anywhere near huge hit status since Gundam 00’s 30k+. TV Gundam since 2000 has been:
58,939 – SEED
68,959 – SEED Destiny
39,353 – 00
34,601 – 00 s2
*2,270 – AGE
*9,351 – Build Fighters
*4,441 – Build Fighters TRY
*9,011 – G Reco
**,*** – G Tekketsu [ongoing]
To be fair if you go further back into the 90’s no other Gundam anime did as well as SEED and 00 barring Wing. Its less that selling 30k and above are a standard for Gundam and more like those shows were exceptions to the rule. Mecha tv anime in general has been in a slump this decade with all original titles failing to crack 10k averages compared to last decade when you had mega hits like Code Geass and Gurren Lagann, so it just may be that the genre is creeping out of the mainstream and becoming more niche for now. It’ll be interesting to see how Bandai pushes Macross Delta this year if they follow the Love Live/Symphogear trend of ticket offers it’ll potentially be a 20k seller, nowhere near as big as Frontier but certainly higher than everything this decade has to offer.
Ummm, how does anyone know if it’s a flop? Was Tekketsu expected to sell numbers comparable to shows from a decade or so ago? Maybe some people expected that but I’m not sure why. Wouldn’t it make more sense to compare it to the more recent TV series? If so, 10.6k+ for a first volume doesn’t seem particularly low to me. I don’t know if it will decline significantly in later volumes, but if it ends up somewhere around 8-9k average, that doesn’t seem like a terrible outcome.
People were expecting a SEED/00 tier success given all the pushing its been getting and the fact that its on the same timeslot (00S2 and AGE specifically) so the numbers seem lukewarm especially considering its half off and comes with a promo code but ratings have bern poor as well so I’m guessing audiences weren’t drawn to it the same way.
Not sure how sales have been in a decline when they’ve been up since AGE and also Bandai’s prime directive with Gundam is through Gunpla sales over BD/DVD. IBO is far from a flop.
Hot damn, that Gochiusa s2 v1 number…
I still wonder why To love ru sales dropped this season?I mean its beacause of bad story or anime available online easily??

What about extended rankings? If Yuru Yuri managed to get into top 100 then a lot must be in extended rankings.
I do the extended rankings after I do the full list. But the extended rankings have more entries when thresholds are higher, because more stuff is selling in general. When thresholds are low, there’s less anime in the Top 300. But this does mean that the threshold to get into the Top 300 is even lower – sometimes 50 or less.
Full list posted. I’m already halfway through the extendeds so I should have that comment up in a bit as well.
Thank you!
Checked the extended rankings for this week. About 50 DVDs and 110 BDs were new or added a week of ranking.

11,706 – Shingeki no Kyojin Kouhen: Jiyuu no Tsubasa
6,288 – Haikyuu!! Shousha to Haisha
Oh, and the silly saga that is the Hyouka BD box constantly teasing 10k continues. G Tekketsu v1 BD is ranked one below the Hyouka BD box in the extended rankings, and it sold 9,989. The Hyouka BD box has been updated probably half a dozen times due to refined lower thresholds since it got to around 9k. How much closer can it get before some new info just puts it over the 10k line? Damn you Gundam, if you had just sold 11 more BDs this week!
>16,371 – Shirobako
>13,009 – Strike The Blood OVA
Three words: Season two when?
Has anyone come up with an explanation for the STB OVA number? I’m not complaining or trying to suggest it’s inaccurate, but it seems like there should be a reason it sold so well. The series average was so much lower….
And wow, over 16k average for Shirobako. Highest selling series P.A. Works has done since Angel Beats?
Vol 1 came with イベントチケット先行購入権抽選申込券(昼の部) (event ticket, afternoon).
Vol 2 came with イベントチケット先行購入権抽選申込券(夜の部) (event ticket, night) and 雪菜のオリジナルフィギュア購入申込券 (ticket to purchase a Yukina figure).
I looked back at the TV series and don’t see any mention of event tickets, so we don’t have a good TV series volume to compare to.
By the way, earlier I said they were a lot cheaper, ¥4k each. Not sure what I was looking at, because it’s actually ¥4900 for the DVD and ¥5900 for the BD. Still cheaper than the TV series’ ¥7000/¥8000 but not half price.
Even considering the extras it’s a very impressive boost.
And yes, Shirobako is the only other 10k PA works series. AB! (34,107) > Shirobako (16,371) > Tari Tari (8,678) > HanaIro (8,585) > Charlotte (7,587) are their series over 5k.
Hmmm interesting. Not sure if it will convince anyone to make a sequel, but it probably doesn’t hurt eh? Seems to suggest there’s some interest out there.
Strike the Blood seems to be in that range (around 6k average) where it seems like it COULD get a sequel, and may have a decent shot, but I wouldn’t necessarily consider it likely (maybe around 50-50 odds?). In its situation, maybe a popular OVA is enough to push it over the edge. Though a more important question might be whether or not the novel got much of a boost.
P.A. Works last couple of original series seem to have done pretty well (Shirobako and Charlotte). Maybe they’ll do more originals in the future.
PA Works has always taken on an unusually high number of original works so I certainly think that’ll continue, yes.
2010 – Angel Beats
2011 – Hanasaku Iroha
2012 – Tari Tari
2013 – Nagi no Asu kara
2014 – Glasslip
2014 – Shirobako
2015 – Charlotte
2016 – Kuromukuro
All told that’s 7 out of 14 total TV series. Charlotte was their fourth original in a row after Uchouten.
Stamyu v1 so close to that 10k!
