Is there any to indicate in this list how many volumes have been counted in the average so far? That would let me know if it got 10K or if it is likely going to slip under it. Something like 1/7 instead of just 7 to indicate that only the first of seven volumes have been reported so far.
It’s probably not feasible due to the way my spreadsheet is structured and how I generate the post markup. The ‘x of y vols’ on the 10k+ list is something I add manually, since it’s only a couple items at a time. Unfortunately you’d have to cross-reference against the per-volume list.
Wow, only 9 sold more than 10,000 copies. That’s not good.
It’ll be less than that in the end. B-Project is definitely ending below 10k. Macross Delta’s average will probably slip below as the remaining volumes come out. I’m not convinced Haikyuu s3 will make it with such a lackluster start. Re:Zero is the most borderline. It might hold on, or it might not. It’ll be very close either way.
But still to have less than 10 shows out of over 100 sell less than 10k on average, that’s pretty bad.
That’s what I mean, it’s even worse than 9. It might be, like… 7. Lowest in a year since 2004.
Damn. Disc sales are plummeting.
@something
How likely is YOI to keep its #1 position over Love Live! Sunshine till the very end?
Probably not very likely. LL got a significantly bigger event ticket boost. 83k+ vs 70k at best for YOI v1. It’s possible v2 could be closer to LL v2’s 60k but I’m thinking it’ll be more like 50k-55k or so.
Then it’d be a matter of how the later volumes hold up. LL has some lower-tier event ticket stuff in later volumes as well, if I remember correctly. Not full concerts, but some kind of seiyuu event thing. That’ll boost it above the ~35k its non-ticket volumes are doing, though presumably not near the 60-80k of the concert events.
YOI would need a much smaller non-ticket volume drop than LL to make up for the ~13k deficit of v2 and maybe 5-10k deficit for v2. Plus it won’t have that boost in later volumes. I also am not convinced YOI will be as consistent as LL. LL’s non-ticket volumes all typically sell the same amount as each other, with virtually no drop.
In the end, while I think comparing non-ticket average to non-ticket average they might actually be quite close, YOI has less, and less-powerful, bonuses so it can’t spike as high. That will result in a lower average. The only advantage YOI has is that it’s only 6 volumes rather than 7 volumes like LL (thus less time to drop) but I don’t think that counteracts the bonuses.
Has your opinion changed on this at all since YoIv2 and LLv5 came out? I still think it’s super unlikely (thought it was nearly impossible before) but people have been saying that there’s a solid chance now, so I wanted your opinion. (I love both so I don’t care to0 much, but it’s weird to consider since I’ve been in such a “LL is the best selling anime of the year!!” mindset for months.)
v2 certainly started as strong as it possibly could have but I’m mostly waiting to see how v3 does. LL still has a strong v1-2 lead due to stronger tickets. If LL doesn’t get a delayed boost to v5 (and then 6 and 7) once everyone figures out what these last three tickets are about, then YOI has a chance. But it’ll require solid consistency in later volumes. May also hinge on LL diluting some of its v1-2 event ticket lead with a 7th volume whereas YOI is only 6 volumes.
I can’t believe Shounen Maid, 91 Days and Battery all flopped that hard. :(
Especially sad about Shounen Maid because that show was so good and relaxing to watch. Oh well.
How to you calculate the average sales?
“Add up the sales per volume then divide by number of volumes” is the simplest answer, though there are a number of considerations to make for shows that have multiple edition per format that all rank, or discs that don’t rank at all, or differences in format e.g. both box and singles in the same initial release, and so on.
But the general idea is “average the DVDs sold and divide by the number of DVD volumes that ranked” and “average the BDs sold and divide by the number of BD volumes that ranked” then “add the two together”.
So a simple example would be:
DVD v1: 1500
DVD v2: 1400
DVD v3: 1250
= 4,150 / 3 = 1,383
BD v1: 4500
BD v2: 3900
BD v3: 3800
= 12,200 / 3 = 4,067
1,383 + 4,067 = 5,450 average
If for example DVD v3 didn’t rank at all, we’d instead do 1500 + 1400 = 2900 / 2 = 1,450 for the DVD If BDs were unchanged from the number above, it’d be 1,450 + 4,067 = 5,517 average.
Essentially, disc that do not rank are ignored in the calculations because we don’t know how much they sold. It may seem counter-intuitive that having a lower-selling disc not rank means a higher average, but that just shows how we sometimes have incomplete data, and should never treat Oricon’s disc reports as gospel. Only the disc publisher (the Aniplexes and Pony Canyons and Bandais of the anime world) have the precise sales data, and they won’t be sharing it with us.
Wow, that’s awesome. Thanks for your reply :3
I got some idea about the average sales XD
At least 52 anime in 2016 sold fewer than 1,000 copies on average per volume.
