I’m tracking Dragonball Super on the mainstream kids’/long-running list.
Fall update:
n/a
Summer update:
Overlord v3 adds 550 BDs, total 10,820.
Symphogear s3 v3 adds 922 BDs, total 10,673. Probably looking at about a 13,500-14,500 average in the end. s1>s2 was a 72% increase while s2>s3 will be about a 55-66% increase. Lower bump on a relative basis but each of those percentage points was MUCH harder to get considering how sequels usually go and the fact that we’re working with bigger numbers now. Sure part of that is getting two event ticket volumes to s1-2’s one each but still super impressive.
Charlotte v3 adds 576 BDs, total 6,410.
TLR Darkness s2 v3 adds 489/162, total 5,641.
Gate v3 adds 351 BDs, total 5,609.
Hetalia s4 v2 adds 720, total 5,070. DVD-only release.
Prisma Illya s3 adds 556 BDs, total 4,243.
Junjou s3 v3 adds 319 DVDs, total 1,909.
Past seasons:
Utapri s3 v6, final volume, sells 13304/6990, total 20,294. Series average: 34,548. Should end around 35,250 or so, putting it at #2, just barely short of UBW Part II’s ~35.8k. It could end higher with an Aniplex+ style bump to previous volumes, but this is King Records, not Aniplex, so I don’t think we’ll see anything like that. Nothing from Fall is going to get in the 30s so our top two are locked in. This has to be one of the closest #1-#2 gaps in a year ever.
Deremas v6 adds 1011/173, total 23,628.
Kurobas s3 v8 adds 936/980, total 11,520. 15k average with one volume left.
Oregairu s2 v5 adds 662 BDs, total 9,473. Still 1.4k ahead of s1 with two volumes to go. Possible it could end with a higher average, or at least very close.
DxD BorN v4 adds 398/161, total 6,071.
Gintama° v5 adds 340 DVDs, total 5,410.
Show by Rock v6, final volume, adds 463 BDs, total 5,315. Series average: 6,822.
Danmachi v6 adds 358 BDs, total 4,695. Should be set to lock in 5k.
OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Garupan OVA adds 543 BDs, total 50,326 in wk42. While I’ve been seeing this rank week after week in the extended rankings, it’s so high ranked that there’s big gaps between one spot and the next, so it didn’t update very often. This marks the first time it’s been in the actual weekly top 100 since wk8 in September 2014. Now finally we have fully updated data, and it’s passed the 50k mark! Congrats, Garupan.
Strike the Blood OVA v1 adds 521/277, total 11,441.
Yuyushiki BD Box adds 444, total 4,219. It joins the s00m list at ¥101.2! That’s not too far behind the revenue from the original singles release. And it’s almost 1k above the 3.3k singles average. Yay for good BD box sales.

Three volumes of K out before any other Fall series starts. How goofy.
Gintama° is not ending soon.
Guess I should check if more got solicited, Aniplex and their partial solicits are a pain.
Didn’t realize how big Minions were in Japan.
The older movies from which they were spawned have been ranking almost every week for months now, often adding 1-2k+ a week. Seems like those things are big everywhere.
Do you think having a second release helps a second season do well (about as good maybe even better than the first season in the case of Oregairu)? Maybe it keeps people’s attention? Or perhaps having a second release that does well is indicative of a show that is likely to have a second season do well?
If the relationship goes either way, I’d say the release of the second season boosts sales of the first season’s re-release more than the reverse. People may be reminded of that show they liked but never bought. It’s not a zero sum situation though, certainly someone who picks up the s1 box is probably more likely to pick up s2 as well, although if they like s1 they were probably going to give s2 a shot anyway.
So “both”, I guess, but it’s more s2 driving the sales.
But as for s2 doing better than s1, I’d say a re-release is an almost insignificant factor. It’s probably far more important to look at what the franchise has been doing outside of anime in the time between seasons to increase its fanbase (like Nanoha). And of course it helps if s2 is just considered to be a way better show (like Symphogear)!
Updated for the full list. Extended additions later.
Checked the extended rankings for this week. About 55 DVDs and 100 BDs were new or added a week of ranking.

Yep, typo.
