Summer update:
Working s3 v1 sells 3683/1272, total 4,955. A two third drop on s1 and s2’s v1wk1s and it won’t have nearly the tail either. It also shouldn’t drop as much in v2 of course, but yep, Working’s 10k+ average disc-pushing days are waaaay over.
Spring update:
Utapri s3 v2 adds 3604/2298, total 47,925.
Past seasons:
Deremas v3 adds 279 BDs, total 25,808.
Kancolle v5 adds 348 BDs, total 15,558. 18.4k average with one vol to go.
Fafner s2 v6, final volume, adds 578 BDs, total 6,536. Series average: 8,033, which now puts it ahead of s1.
Saekano v6 adds 518 BDs, total 7,308. 9.3k avg with one vol left.
Tamayura s2 v2 adds 303 BDs, total 4,858. Yes, the Summer 2013 show with a disc that released in November 2013 just got a third week (v1 should add a bit in the extended rankings too). Amazon had a big 90% off sale on a few discs and this one moved the most out of the sale items.
v1 adds 225 BDs, total 5,116. From extended rankings. Same sale.
Sailor Moon v10 sells 316 DVDs, total 2,616 with last month’s BDs.
v11 sells 1,963 BDs, DVDs next month.
OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Joshiraku BD Box sells 1,504.
Psycho-Pass movie adds 298/235 LE/RE BDs, total 43,030.
Strike Witches OVA v3 adds 334 non-Amazon LE BDs, total 14,404.

The Free! ES event. <3
Stalker estimate along topped 30k and it’s always been Animate-heavy so it should end up being one of the most successful anime-related event discs of all time. Even the franchise’s low-end of underestimation would get it near a 40k wk1. I don’t think it’ll be as underestimated as most of its TV series discs, but it’ll still move discs for sure.
I’m really, really glad for all the seiyuu, the staff, Utsumi and KyoAni. I never ever imagined that a female oriented show from KyoAni could go this far. It’s just…I’m so happy, I don’t know what to say.
Don’t forget Animation Do! This was their first project as credited for animation production and it’s enabled them to sell their own merchandise for the first time (two clear files (HaruRin/HaruMako) and two sets of acrylic charms). I had a feeling it’d be popular, but the success it’s achieved has been beyond what I imagined. I’m definitely happy for all involved.
Of course! How could I forget them? I’m really happy for them too!
If it does end up doing above 40K, then it’d be in pretty good company.

Although I didn’t watch Free!, i’m amazed at how much the franchise has grown and how well it has done. Since the HighSpeed Free! movie in December has 120 screens, the next thing i’m curious about is how high will the movie do at the Box Office? Will it be the 5th (Evangelion is prime-time) late-night/midnight anime movie to pass the 1 billion yen milestone? Will it be able to join Madoka and LL as part of the exclusive 2 billion yen club?
The movie will have Haruka and Makoto as main characters. The pairing is extremely popular and Makoto is the most popular character. If they play their cards right, KyoAni could really make a really amazing film which could possibly be one of their biggest films ever.
¥1bn maaaaybe, but ¥2bn seems out of reach. Much as I love it, its viewership is going to be almost entirely women and I’d think that limits its potential gross vs something that brings in both men and women. At least for an anime movie. Free’s TV sales were on par with T&B and that was ¥740m on a roughly similar number of screens (94).
Maybe Free’s film will benefit from (I’m guessing) being a bit more standalone. And them being kids in the film might make it more family-friendly… maybe? I dunno I just have trouble seeing it bringing in a mainstream audience. Hopefully I’m wrong, and even my naturally pessimistic assumptions have me thinking this hits at least ¥750m.
Who knows with late night anime movies tho, it’s still an industry that is, for all intents and purposes, only a couple years old and constantly growing.
Not surprising considering the second season aired four years ago. Durarara was another perfect example of this.
It still hurts because this season has everything we wanted.
Yeah, but the second season of DRRR!! is incredibly disappointing when compared to the first one. And the home video sales show that, the Japanese just don’t care anymore.
I’m happy with the Joshiraku BD BOX numbers, I guess asking for more wouldn’t be realistically possible.
Actually DRRR has been very good as of this second cour. First cour was ok, but some of these last few episodes have been the best in the entire series imo. While disc sales aren’t great because it’s been over 5 years, I still think the franchise is making enough through merchandising and other forms of promotion to make up for the bad disc sales.
Working was about what I expected seeing trends in similar shows lately. As an extreme example, Denki-gai no Honya-san was a very similar series in premise (albeit a more crude flavor of comedy) and it averaged just 412 copies. I know there are many other factors involved, but it’s kind of indicative of where the tastes are. Comedy series that I like seem to consistently sell in the 1k-5k range for whatever reason, it’s probably the same 1-5k people buying them lol.
Not sure in Working’s case that it has anything to do with shifting tastes in a broad sense, so much as it taking four years for the third season to come out, and the manga being over for 9 months already.
Anyone who would get into the manga via the anime probably did so in season one or two, and then finished the manga last year. There’s a lack of any novelty factor or a sense of a consistently expanding franchise, things that drive sequels to stay consistent or increase in sales.
There’s just other stuff to watch, and you’re only still buying Working at this point if you’re a hardcore fan who likes Working explicitly because it’s Working, not just because it’s a fun comedy, but could have been anything. The latter type of fan is going to buy something new over the third season of Working. The former will always buy Working but they’re only a portion of the fans.
That makes sense as well. I guess it would be interesting to get some other cases where a 2nd,3rd,4th, etc. season of an anime came out after the manga was done and see what the trend is. I myself do not really enjoy manga, so I didn’t think of that angle. Anime is my preferred delivery method of story telling ;-). It does make sense though that you’d have a drop-off if people already know what’s going to happen or how it ends, let alone the gap in time between releases and subsequent loss of interest.
Lets see if we get a s3 of Fafner or another movie(s).
Good uapri. I hope they give us more Utapri shining theater.
If Fafner doesn’t conclude the story in the split cour I will be pissed.
Jeez, those working sales. I actually thought it would have like a 7-8k average.
I might need a microscope for this week. Well, next week looks curious, but mostly I just want for the next season’s titles to arrive so we can see how things develop, I’m particularly curious to see how far Symphogear will go this time, from the looks it might sell better than S2 which would make a funny case of each season selling better than the previous one, a bit like Nanoha I guess.
Checked the extended rankings for this week. About 60 DVDs and 95 BDs were new or added a week of ranking.

I guess I forgot to do this comment last week.
v1-2 of Tamayura ~more aggressive~ were in that big Amazon sale this week so new v1 and avg numbers.
Garupan’s OVA has been ranking on and off for months now but the gap between it and the next extended ranking milestone above it seemed too high to reach. it finally did it this week though, adding about 1.1k BDs and taking the total over 48k. 50k is probably out of reach even if the movie gives it a bump, but great sales anyway.
