Thought Youkai Watch could hit 100k opening week, I guess 99k is close enough.
Spring update:
Kyoukai no Rinne v1 sells 401. DVD-only release.
Kekkaisen v2 sells 10155/3692, total 13,847. Not a bad drop, all things considered. v1 hasn’t had a *huge* tail, so v2 could end up fairly close. Maybe about a 20% drop in the end?
v1 adds 442/268, total 21,504. DVDs from extended.
Euphonium v2 sells 6511/731, total 7,242. Higher than v1wk1 but not as much as I might have hoped. It did have some stock issues in release week but those seem to be largely resolved now, and it’s in stock at Rakuten, Gamers, Amazon, and HMV but currently out of stock at Animate （v1 is OOS at Animate too actually). I don’t think this volume can get much past 8.5k, a slightly bigger drop (but still by no means “big”) than I expected assuming v1 hits 10k. Of course nobody expected v1 to be anywhere near 10k in the first place sooooo that we’re even talking like this means it’s looking very good.
v1 adds 441 BDs, total 9,846. Next week should do it.
Re-Kan v1 sells 570/255, total 825. DVDs from extended.
Utapri s3 v1 adds 1631/932, total 59,780.

Bandai come on, another singles re-print for Garupan? Release a BD box you bastards.
Given Psycho pass box office gross, shouldn’t week1 sales be way higher than that? Something closer to 70k at least.
Not necessarily, no. There’s rather weak correlation between box office gross and DVD/BD sales. Anohana and Strike Witches have about the same disc sales (44.8k vs 43.3k) despite the Anohana movie having 5x the box office gross. That’s also about where Psycho-Pass should end up, despite doing ¥650m more than Strike Witches and ¥150m less than Anohana.
Psycho-Pass is set to sell less than a lot of the films that grossed less but it’s also useful to look at how this compares to its TV series sales, which were only 9,285 and 7,019. It’s looking at a 4-7x multiplier, which is great, and better than most of the series on the list. AnoHana got only a 1.4x multiplier. It’s closer to Haruhi Shoushitsu (which had the same box office gross) , which got a 3.2x multiplier on the 2006 series and 7.1x multiplier on the 2009 series.
That makes sense.
It’s just a bit rare to see that sort of box office gross for a series that sold 9k. The fact that they greenlighted a second season and a movie at the same time with that kind of average is also odd.
Don’t want to speculate too much without evidence, but could the decision possibly have something to do with Urobuchi’s involvement? He seems to have something akin to the Midas touch lately, or perhaps that is how he is perceived. A lot of his shows have had two cours recently it seems.
The sequel doesn’t need Urobuchi to explain it, because 9k is easily enough to put any show in probable-sequel territory. Especially an original that doesn’t need to worry about the availability of source material.
As for the movie, that’s less Urobuchi specifically than films being a big part of noitaminA’s strategy, and Fuji’s backing has been able to secure good marketing and screen counts (AnoHana ending around 88 and Psycho-Pass opening at over 100). AnoHana did spectacularly well for them and is what really got this ball rolling. In addition to Psycho-Pass they’ve already announced three films under http://project-itoh.com/. The first two would have been decided around the same time Psycho-Pass was, as they were announced only two months after Psycho-Pass was.
Expect to see both more original films and more film adaptations from noitaminA-related properties if they continue to do well.
