Boueibu’s week 1 keeps increasing with each volume, yay!
>Etotama v3 sells 553 BDs, DVDs do not rank. It’s so ridiculous that this is on v3 already.
3 volumes in 6-7 weeks.. how odd. Ontop of being released in week 2 of spring.
>9k confirmed for YuYuYu
Great!
>Trinity Seven v6, final volume, sells 1804/462, total 2,266. Series average: 3,313. Probably 3400k in the end.
So sell 1000 times more.
Oh lol. That would sure be something.
But who knows what the tail will look like on the final volume though? Maybe he’s expecting a sudden Trinity Seven buying extravaganza. A few million next week, a few million the week after…
I actually liked Ookami Shoujo…oh well.
So a spring series is on its third volume, while we have yet to see the volume 1 number for Yona huh…the logic of anime production committees.
I liked and bought Ookami Shoujo BDs as well, have the complete set and box. And I bought all the manga which actually is doing well and these days it seems the manga and live action adaptations are all that matter. Well, my copy of volume 12 with OAD isn’t here yet as the OAD seems to have caused a delay already of 2 months, not sure when it’s coming out now.
In fact I really liked this season of Ookami Shoujo. In a way it is better than the manga in that it ends in such a spot that you get a nice little, almost complete story with a nice happy ending. The manga actually starts to sort of wander after that which you have to do in shoujo it seems once you get a long run going; you can’t just set up a nice relationship, you have to introduce rival after rival after rival… though some are fun like the ones in middle school still wearing sailor suit uniforms.
Reminds me I still haven’t seen Robico (TnK)’s new manga, guess it hasn’t actually come out yet.
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2015-05-27/anime-studios-success-calculated-based-on-10-years-of-disc-sales/.88558
Have you seen this? I wonder why did they take 3000 copies as a minimum though.
I saw the yaraon post (http://yaraon.blog109.fc2.com/blog-entry-32166.html), yeah.
It’s… superficial, if I’m being charitable. It’s exactly the kind of context-free ranking presented without any caveats or background that is guaranteed to generate far more heat than light.
3,000 is a completely arbitrary threshold. That in and of itself is okay (I have a 10k+ list after all!), but broadly defining it as “success” is not okay at all. You know how I feel about the Manabi Line, this is basically just that with a round number.
And some studios do a lot of kids shows. For crying out loud Sunrise 9 worked on the first season of Aikatsu, one of the biggest money-making machines in recent memory. The discs not selling is completely meaningless. Oh and they also did Gundam SEED, one of the most successful shows ever, but that was pre-2005 so it doesn’t count here.
Not to mention when you’re talking about animation studios, success is not measured by disc sales. Just look at the studios on the “least successful” list, it’s got some of the most enduring and prolific names in anime: Madhouse, Sunrise, and Deen, for starters. If you’ve been around for decades and animated dozens of shows and are still active, you’re a probably successful studio. And when studios do have problems, how much the series they animated sold is not going to be the immediate cause.
I’m not saying every sales ranking has to have some deep, important meaning to it. Sometimes it’s just fun to slice and dice the numbers in silly ways. But unless it’s done in an environment where context is going to be provided, it does more harm than good. The original JP posting probably was in a sales forum or something, where people knew how to interpret the numbers, but as soon as it’s dumped on aggregator sites like Yaraon or ANN, that goes out the window.
The 3000 number is particularly problematic imo because it seems to reinforce that point as a kind of “break even” number. Which of course isn’t necessarily true, and is probably not true for a lot of shows. Personally, I’d prefer a number like 4 or 5k, if for no other reason then at least they don’t reinforce that. Also, since realistically those seem like more likely break even points, though obviously not for all series.
Though not sure I agree that success isn’t determined/measured by disc sales. It isn’t always, but i think sometimes it can be. Context, context!
Success *for a studio* is only tangentially related to disc sales. Studios are successes if they get a lot of work and get it done in a financially efficient manner. And we’ve seen time and again that studio decisions have much more to do with speed, cost, efficiency, corporate relationships, and frankly “who has an open spot in their schedule?” than how their discs sold in the past.
Obviously the KyoAni experience (where years of success and a fantastic corporate and workplace culture enabled them to create and so far very successfully sustain a novel business model) shows that the relationship between studios and success is very complex, but this list makes no such subtle distinctions, about this or, well, anything else. That’s why it sucks.
The 3000k Mark does not really represent how a studio is successful…i mean most anime studio’s get paid in advance by others in order to animate there work and it is them that are the ones to see if they are going to profit from the anime…the 3k line seems to more or less is taken as a general consensus to establish the average break even point for a successful series to be…In these last few years i have seen a few shows that sell way below that and still get more anime made like recently diabolik lovers had been so low comparable to 0 and yet it still has more on the way…cause they are other factors involving animation production that is not limited to disk sales…it is a major factor but not the only one… i really wish we have more insight depth as to how the anime industry works and what really drives a studio and how they are successful or not.
> Love Live! s2 v6 adds 209, total 50,493. Series average: 64,931.
Vol.5 is above Vol.6 on the extended BD list, so Vol.6’s lower bound rises from 50,430 to 50,493, thereby the average should be 64,940.
If I haven’t left the comment about the extended rankings it means I haven’t gone through them yet. They take forever so I do them on Fridays nights or Saturdays when I have more time.
Oh right and I forgot to leave my “full ranking updated” comment. Anyways it is, extended rankings comment probably on Saturday.

Is there anything wrong with this site ? http://www3.atchs.jp/test/read.cgi/urisure/. It gets ERR Connection for me.
They voluntarily closed it a few days ago, since they have since moved on to a different domain.
You can find it here now: http://cheese.ula.cc/urisure/
The only thing I don’t like about this change, is that there is no RSS support for the various threads there!
Cool, every source link I’ve ever given is broken now, rad.
Oh well.
