  1. AnimePhoenix says:

    Wowowowowowow Boueibu v2! Nearly 6k! More than what volume 1 did in its first week. Of course, I don’t expect it to have a super long tail like v1 but I was praying for 3k and thought it would be a miracle if it got 4k. I am so happy right now. That feeling when a show you love immensely looks like it’s going to sell less than 1k two months back and yet look at it now! Is this…is this what they call happiness? Happy tears. ;__;

Thank you female otaku and fujoshi in Japan for supporting this series. And I will continue to support it by spending money on the game.

    • fourteenwings says:

You do have to wonder whether the directors comments about a second season being entirely dependent on BD sales helped. Maybe strong word of mouth?

Aside from that, it’s always really nice to see a female otaku oriented show that isn’t UtaPri or a sports show do well.

      • AnimePhoenix says:

I don’t know. I’ve seen articles about Karneval’s twitter and Danganonpa’s twitter say ‘buy the discs if you want season 2’, but those tweets really didn’t help.

I guess the second half of the show and the EnAtsu really got people into the show.

And yes, it’s absolutely wonderful to see something other than UtaPri or a sports show do well with female otaku. This new show called High School Star Musical(male idols) is coming this Fall, by the director of TeniPri and Kurobasu. I hope it succeeds too!

  2. Mr. Peter says:

You attempted moe and fell flat on your face! Why?

    • something says:

I don’t even know what this comment is trying to say.

      • Mr. Peter says:

WIT Studio attempted to create a moe show with a lavish premise, setting, and animation but ended up falling flat in its face. It’s a real shame they botched up their chance of creating their own original series.

        • something says:

WIT is just the studio, third on the committee behind Shouchiku and Pony Canyon. I don’t think they had much say about its creation. Framing it as being “theirs” is misleading.

I also think “moe show” is a phrase that has less and less meaning every day.

        • Ejc says:

You know every single anime invokes the moe feeling in its watchers in some way? Example: Girls und Panzer invoked the moe feeling for military otaku through the tanks featured in the anime, and making it move and sound as close to reality as possible. Even inanimate objects can do this.

Now moving onto other anime that were animated by WIT Studio… surprise surprise… even Shingeki no Kyojin had some way to do this. Do you think the significant female otaku fanbase (which includes fujoshi and non-fujoshi) did not feel the moe feeling when watching it? I sure hope you don’t think only male otaku were the ones who bought Shingeki no Kyojin.

  3. Lidieth says:

Fafner v3 is missing in the commentary section.

By week 2 its BD sales have dropped a bit more than expected (but only BDs), probably due to the character song included with v2. Shame, I would have loved to see Exodus 1st cour reach the first series average.
All next volumes got delayed by 5 weeks, which puts them out of the ‘robot week’, also v4 will come out along with many Spring v1s… I hope it won’t affect sales too much.

    • something says:

Added the missing comment, total is 7,156.

It still has a shot to beat the s1 average. s1 averaged 8,005 and s2 is at 8,705 with 3 volumes left. It’s doable, but it needs to be very consistent from here on out, and continue to tack on a few hundred here and there to released volumes with its long tail. Extended ranking weeks account for 1,631 discs over vols 1-2 (evenly spit), and while later volumes probably won’t add 800+ they might do just enough to put it over the top. Maybe.

  4. dan says:

Pleased to see that CG series flop.

Next week seems interesting, looking forward to it.

  5. mcpw says:

I believe YuYuYu will get a boost since the bonus of the last one is a second Visual Novel, I have heard a lot of users saying they would just buy the first and the last because of the VN

  6. jeroz says:

Yeah Etotama released too early. Not many people will buy when they aren’t sure what ep2 is going to be like, and ep1 didn’t really capitalise on the characters yet like ep2.

and lolz at the disappearance of Kancolle

    • something says:

      Regarding Kancolle, 16,789 → 2,109 → 375, and probably another 150-250 this week.

Pretty typical front-loaded late night anime! If anything wk2 was decently large. The for-ever ranking +500, +700 weeks of stuff like Saekano and Shirobako is the exception, not the rule.

      • Hahalollawl says:

Is the tail typically related to the release date? Or perhaps more common for 2 cour series? I remember that NagiAsu was a 2 cour and had an unusual tale. Or maybe it’s a P.A. Works thing haha. Or maybe an “oops we understocked” thing.

        • something says:

[Send this reply to the wrong comment originally]

It generally has to be a combination of stock issues and late-surging popularity. If you’re popular all along, there’s more time to stock accordingly (not that distributors can’t still fail at this hey how are you doing Garupan). If you’re able to ramp up production instantly to meet demand, then it doesn’t matter how late you surge.

So yeah, that accounts for most of it.

NagiAsu is a very special case, where stock seems to have been of secondary importance because the surge in popularity happened about a month after the first volume released. That was indeed purely a matter of the show winning people over at the mid-point. It never ended up selling a lot, but it sold much much more than it was going to originally.

    • Ejc says:

Well its obvious that a large portion of buyers for Vol.1 of KanColle were in for the event ticket serial code. I don’t find this really surprising as many of the fans of the game and light novel did not like the anime adaptation and therefore did not buy it. A lot of non-fans found the anime adaptation enjoyable and bought the anime.

As a past player of KanColle, I sure did not even consider touching the BDs… and would most likely not watch the sequel if the staff was still the same. Only if by miracle, it is actually worthy of an adaptation then I may pick it up later, but I highly doubt it.

  7. something says:

As usual, I don’t have time to do this at work so I’ll get to it… I actually don’t want to say tonight, so let’s say tomorrow after work.

  8. netinago says:

Just curious, why you don’t bold IDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls v1?

    • something says:

Thought I had, just missed it I guess.

      • Anonymous says:

Will you count G4U bundle btw.

        • something says:

Yeah, I did for Animas when it became clear it was the version two thirds of people were buying.

I think the Media Create numbers get posted in a neogaf thread and from the one time I glanced at it thresholds were down to like 2-3k so we should get decent data.

  9. something says:

Updated for the full list, working on the extended rankings now.

  10. something says:

Checked the extended rankings for this week. About 45 DVDs and 95 BDs were new or added a week of ranking.

    Updated volume 1s
    14,844 – Kimiuso
    12,436 – Saekano
    10,454 – Fafner Exodus
    8,448 – Boueibu
    7,885 – Aldnoah Zero s2
    7,228 – Durarara!! x2 Shou
    6,312 – Shinmai Maou
    4,457 – Ansatsu Kyoushitsu
    1,576 – Absolute Duo

    Updated averages for finished shows
    33,266 – Tsukimonogatari
    23,813 – Haikyuu!!
    21,604 – Free! s2
    6,360 – Psycho-Pass 2
    3,460 – Teekyuu season 2

    Updated BD boxes
    13,145 – Digimon Adventure
    10,131 – Psycho-Pass s1
    9,717 – Hyouka
    8,425 – Gintama Box 1
    7,427 – Gintama Box 2
    959 – Suzumiya Haruhi s1 (2014-08 re-release)

    Updated films/OVAs/etc
23,493 – Idolmaster Cinderella Girls promo disc
    14,377 – Shingeki Zenpen

The new minimum DVD threshold of 199 (down from 210) gives us numbers for the following discs ranked between Combatler V v3’s 210 and YuuGiOu Arc-V v10’s 199:
    Natsuyuki Rendezvous v1
    Gingitsune v3
    Kiseijuu v1
    Outbreak Company v3
    Sakura Trick v4
    Outbreak Company v5
    Arata Kangatari v5
    Captain Earth v8
    Nobunaga the Fool v6

Of course this low in the list Oricon just screws around with rankings for fun so I have no idea if they’ll be above Arc-V v10 next week or not!

    • AnimePhoenix says:

    • Progeusz says:

Will you be adding the new DVD data to averages? Of course I’m mainly interested in Sakura Trick.

      • something says:

Any time new data comes through the extended rankings it gets added (though only on this site after the Ranking Summary posts). In Sakura Trick’s case, it hurts rather than helps because it lowers the overall DVD average ever so slightly.

    • Ejc says:

      Boueibu Vol.1 should be 8,448 (3,292~3,319 BD + 5,156~5,170 DVD)

      1373 アマガミSS+ plus ② 桜井梨穂子 【Blu-ray】 2012/05/02 6 2
      1381 美男高校地球防衛部LOVE! 1 2015/03/18 22 5
      1383 おねがい☆ツインズ Blu-ray Box Complete Edition 2012/03/23 25 1

      3077 AIKa DVD COLLECTION 1 2000/08/25
      3081 美男高校地球防衛部LOVE! 1 2015/03/18 20 5
      3082 PandoraHearts DVD Retrace:II 2009/08/25 23 2

      • something says:

Oricon being obnoxious again! There’s no Boueibu v1 DVD in my scraped data at all this week (run on Thursday morning), so the update was missed. The pages did that annoying thing where it duplicated the last item on the previous page as the first item on the next page:

        3079 ローゼンメイデン E
        3080 十二国記 風の万里 黎明の空 第6巻
        3081 十二国記 風の万里 黎明の空 第6巻
        3082 PandoraHearts DVD Retrace:U

This is what makes discs with the same sales a pain, it randomly sorts them on each page load or whatever, so Juuni Kokuki happened to be #3080 when I loaded /p/308 and 3081 when I loaded /p/309, and Boueibu in the reverse positions.

Sigh. Never ceases to amaze me, the way the rankings can make trouble. How can a simple descending numerical ranking be so bad.

  11. Hell Raiser says:

    Shouldn’t Saekano v2 be 8393?

  12. Wandering Wastrel says:

I suppose over 1,000 for the Houkago no Pleadies ONA BD box is pretty good, considering the ONA episodes were available for free on Youtube.

  13. Ejc says:

Francesca ranked 217 this week on BD, where we know an Idol Image BD ranked 179 and sold 100 BDs. We also know that Shin Strange Plus sold above 69 in its release week, but we don’t know if Francesca has equal sales with Shin Strange Plus or not. However, we can thus conclude that Francesca and Shin Strange Plus must’ve sold in the range of 70 to 99 copies, which is truly terrible. The week before, Sailor Moon Crystal BD Vol.6 RE has probably taken over as the lowest selling Animation BD ever.
