Crazy BD thresholds for a crazy week.
Winter update:
Kancolle v1 sells 16789/3184, total 19,973. Underestimated 12.9% DVD, overestimated 0.9% BD, so very very close. The strong storefront rankings and very early 10k point push canceled out to almost exactly right.
Dog Days” v1 sells 4663/1446, total 6,109. Event ticket, but still down from 9.2-9.6k for the previous v1wk1s. A drop was expected due to them waiting three years, so I’m hoping it can still manage a 5k average, which would be down from 8-8.2k. Underestimated 38.2% DVD, 62.1% BD.
Shimai Maou v1 sells 3925/1052, total 4,977. Overestimated 13.0% DVD, underestimated 11.5% BD.
Tokyo Ghoul s2 v1 sells 1560/1060, total 2,620. Overestimated 34.8% DVD, 4.0% BD.
AnsaKyou v1 sells 1177/1747, total 2,924. Underestimated 1.8% DVD, 10.5% BD.
World Break v1 sells 952/325, total 1,277. Overstimated 25.5% DVD, underestimated 1.4% BD.
Fafnir v1 sells 879/255, total 1,134. Overestimated 3.8% DVD, underestimated 64.3% BD, which sounds massive until you remember it’s just a couple hundred units.
Isuca v1 sells 739/224, total 963. Overestimated 30.0% DVD, 12.4% on BD. DVDs from extended ranking.
Yurikuma v1 sells 918 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Overestimated 22.7%.
Junketsu no Maria v1 sells 512 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Overestimated 46.4%.
Drrr x2 v2 sells 2753/1937, total 4,690.
Saekano v1 adds 652 BDs, total 11,188. I’m not sure how far this will go, but assuming it gets another solid week next week when v2 comes out and then makes the extended ranks a few moe times… pushing 12.5k? 13k?
Aldnoah s2 v1 adds 820/214, total 7,379.
Boueibu v1 adds 832 DVDs, total 6,247.
Military! adds 133 BDs, total 472 as a one-shot box (extended rankings).
Fall update:
Fate UBW sells 33,876, as a one-shot BD-only box. No estimates available because the main version was not tracked.
Gundam BFT sells 2292/1768 BDs, if we tack on the equivalent average DVDs of the first half, 443, the total is 4,503. Should pass 5k, but that’s down from about 9.7k from s1. Overestimated 20.8% LE, 18.3% RE.
Shirobako v4 sells 11150/447, total 11,597. DVDs from the extended rankings.

And a very small week to follow up this week’s monster.
Checked the extended rankings for this week. About 90 DVDs and a lot of BDs were new or added a week of ranking.
Oricon you’re driving me bonkers. The thing I mentioned last week about old volumes suddenly at double their actual sales is just getting worse – I found about twenty more this week and I wasn’t even looking for them. Their website will be the end of me, I swear.
Some updates.
Kimiuso v1 → 14,143
Aldnoah s2 v1 → 7,379
Boueibu v1 → 6,654
World Break v1 → 1,277
Fafnir v1 → 1,134
Isuca v1 → 963
so basically its final that koufuku sales are gonna be dead no matter what?
Dead as a really dead thing, yes.
Total Sales, mean that is the Stock, is the total of products that had to be sold, but in some cases, not sold everything.
No, Oricon tracks sales, not shipment. Distributors typically report shipments, but these aren’t distributor numbers. The numbers here are reported directly by retailers themselves to Oricon as discs sold.
So why has this order list?
The first row makes sense, but the second not
I’m not sure I follow your question. What do you mean by first and second row?
Week Sales is the first row and the second row is Total Sales.
Oh you mean columns. Yes, weekly sales column means “how many discs did it sell this week” while the total sales is “how many has it sold over the entire time it’s been released?”
For example, Free! -Eternal Summer- v7 sold 1,394 this week (between 3/23 and 3/29) but the total is 12,741 because last week it sold 11,347. Add 1,394 to that and you get the 12,741.
Shigatsu v1 broke 14k…wow…good news for fans of romance and classical music..and I happen to like both. Could v2 hit 10k?
Saekano might be the most surprising to me though…11k+ wow. Did anyone see that coming?
A1/Aniplex seems to be doing quite well in sales lately. And A1 seems to be doing a LOT of shows lately. Are they a significantly larger studio than the others?
Kimiuso v only needs 1.8k, so it should do 10k by wk3.
A1 are a subsidiary of Aniplex, and Aniplex is the dominant force in late night anime right now, so yeah A1 gets a ton of work because of that, and can handle it because… well I’m not sure I’d say they’re “bigger” so much as A1 is an amorphous entity under which many different projects can go on with many different teams. I think I’ve seen it described before that A1 doesn’t have a whole lot in the way of core “employees”, it’s more like the label under which the various teams on Aniplex’s shows work at any given time. I’m probably misstating that somewhat but it’s that general idea.
Kind of the opposite of a studio like KyoAni, who does everything in-house with a fairly small core staff, with minimal outsourcing.
Yeah, since A1 is a subsidiary of Aniplex, I figured that they would generally tend to send projects to A1, and then if A1 can’t handle it then maybe they outsource to other studios, but perhaps it’s not quite that way. It sounds like you’re suggesting that “A-1” isn’t so much a studio, as a team label, under which a different variety of employees work under. Are those employees from other studios typically, or more like freelancers?
Either way, sounds rough if you’re in the industry and they don’t hire many “core” employees, since it would seem like you wouldn’t have much job security.
Is P.A. Works a bit like KyoAni in the sense that they tend to lean more towards independence? Although KyoAni seems to be the extreme (in that they seem to maintain tight control over what they do).
Shaft teams up with Aniplex quite a bit I think. What about Madhouse and Bones?
I guess what I’m curious about is, which studios are more like contracted studios and which studios are more like producers who are invested (like on the production committee)? I would think that could give you an idea of which studios care more about disc sales (if their profits depend on it).
[…] of shipgirls, lots of people predicted it would sell like crazy! And it kinda didn’t. Most predictions about its success failed spectacularly, except for a couple of conservative ones. […]
