This week is tied for about a month ago for lowest DVD threshold we’ve seen.
Was really hoping for more than that from the Magical Mirai concert, this is likely to be the lowest selling of the major Miku concerts on disc especially since it was BD only. I guess some people didn’t feel the need to buy it after buying 2013, since the concerts are probably pretty similar (haven’t seen 2014 yet). I mean it’s not bad… I just hoped it could reach 10k eventually, which is unlikely now.
Winter update:
Fafner Exodus v2 sells 6247/865, total 7,112. Slightly edges out v1wk1, although it’s safe to assume its tail will be much shorter than v1’s now 3k+. Still a very very solid follow-up though.
v1 adds 584, total 9,817. Highest selling volume of Fafner and a lock for 10k v1 now.
Saekano v1 adds 2887/390, total 9,869. That is a hell of a wk2, wow. I expected it to be good based on the rankings, but not this good. Could get as high as 12k.
Fall update:
Orenchi no Furo Jijou sells 1,870 as a one-shot, DVD-only release. One of the rare DVD-only hold-outs.
World Trigger v1 sells 767/583, total 1,350.
Shirobako v1 adds 336 BDs, total 13,026.
v2 adds 346 BDs, total 12,739.
v3 adds 467 BDs, total 12,272.
Kimiuso v1 adds 550/283, total 12,385.
Nanatai v2 adds 140/231, total 6,568. BDs from extended ranking.
Past seasons:
Sailor Moon Crystal v5 sells 358 DVDs, total 2,985 with last month’s BDs.
v6 sells 2,196 BDs, DVDs next month.
Shounen Hollywood v6, final volume, sells 786/338, total 1,124. Series average: 1,158 (should end around 1,175).
SAO II v5 adds 332 BDs, total 18,723. 20,105 average with 4 to go, will presumably end below 20k. Don’t think it’ll go below 19k though. It’s had a pretty long tail (3.3k total discs added for v1-4 so far) in the extended rankings.
OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Persona 3 #2 Movie sells 19405/623 BDs and 3245/521 DVDs, total 23,746. Movie #1 did 29,445 wk1.
Strike Witches OVA v2 sells 7660/5033 BDs, 1028 DVDs, total 13,721. v1 did 16,528 wk1. Oricon really did split the Amazon and non-Amazon versions, or rather probably Kadokawa split it and Oricon followed suit. So unusual.
Slam Dunk BD Box v5 sells 1,895. Should be the last one and end up around 2.4k average for the boxes.
Tsukimonogatari v1 adds 387 BDs, total 33,313.
v2 adds 1677/316, total 31,725. Series average: 32,326 so far.
Yuru Yuri OVA adds 343 BDs, total 9,568. Oh damn I’d love for this to hit 10k, it was fantastic.
Hyouka BD Box adds 273, total 9,193. Yay for 9k.
Oregairu BD Box adds 355, total 5,302.

6 new v1s and 6 BD boxes this week.
Orefuro was overestimated a lot. Still, it’s good sales for a short but I hope it can add a sizable amount next week.
And oh boy, Boueibu v1 will be out next week. Please, please at least do 2k.
Yay I’m really happy for Fafner <3
How bad is it that Persona 3 sold 10k less than the first movie?
I hope that Omoide no Marnie will sell well, but I'm quite sure it won't T.T
Is it sad that I’m happy ShoHolly managed a 4-digit average at all? I want the second season not to dip below 1000 average as well, but that might be a long shot, isn’t it ;_;
Congratulations to Fafner for its highest selling volume. Vol.2 was underestimated like vol.1.
I thought its fanbase was mostly female but it doesn’t sell that much DVDs and a lot of its sales come from Amazon rather than Animate, even if the first volumes have been slightly underestimated. Fafner may just have a unique pattern?
We have seen shows popular with women be BD-heavy before. It’s becoming more common, albeit slowly. The gap is larger than usual here though, yes.
The reason it’s only been 16-17% underestimated on BD so far is because Amazon had an exclusive artbox for v1. If anything, being modestly underestimated despite an exclusive box is rather unusual. When Amaburi had an exclusive box, it was overestimated 38%. So I think that still reflects significant storefront presence for Fafner v1.
v2 is a little less obvious, because there was no exclusive this time. But I think once fans started buying buying at Amazon for v1, there was no incentive to buy other volumes (at full MSRP) from other retailers like Animate.
Especially because the Animate box requires the purchase of *all* volumes, while Amazon’s was just one volume. And if you bought v1 from Amazon, well, you’re no longer eligible for the Animate box unless you double-dip on v1, which is a bit much for most people. Might as well just continue with Amazon and pay 26% less for v2+.
So many parameters to take into account. Your explanations are amazing, as always.
Thanks for the answer!
Well I see this …
**6,693位/—,—位 ★ (***,*68 pt) [*,**1予約] 2015/04/15 えとたま 壱 [Blu-ray]
Why would a 12 episode shows sell its BD after 1-2 weeks released ?
Some of the volumes only have 1-2 week gaps in between as well. It’s an exceptionally bizarre release. (Also seems to be mostly CGI junk, not sure it’ll even qualify for tracking.)
I like those numbers for Saekano. That’s been my favorite show from this season, and the way it’s going, it looks like it’s really going to need a second season to give it a proper ending, so anything that increases the odds of that happening is cool with me.
What are your predictions for Rolling Girls v1, The shingeki no kyojin movie and Kiseijuu v1?
I think Stalker will be a little low but generally close enough on Rolling Girls (1.2k becomes 1.5-1.8k?) and probably accurate on Kiseijuu (dead, sub-1k, might depend on if DVDs rank). Shingeki, er, I dunno. There are this many versions:

WHICH IS RIDICULOUS.
All told Stalker is predicting a touch under 10k if you add them all up. I feel like it could be more, but it’s not going to sell all that much, all things considered.
I see. Pretty unfortunate that Kiseijuu sales will be so low. Also I’m quite surprised at how the sales for the shingeki movie are only about 10K! I was expecting it to do better considering that the TV series averaged at 51K. Anyways thank you for answering my question! :)
Hard to tell with Shingeki if it’s just very low interest in a recap movie for a show that already spent way too much time recapping itself, or if the anime’s popularity was a flash in the pan and we should expect any sequel to sell way way less.
Of course it could drop by more than half and still sell well over 20k so it’s not like it’s in danger of doing poorly or anything.
This is my first time posting here and I don’t know if my question as been asked before but is there a reason Parasyte is considered dead or why it’s sales or so low? It seemed to be really popular on the sites I usually go to and I believe there are even live-action adaptations. Is it just not popular in Japan anymore?
I’ve heard mixed reactions to how it fares as an adaptation of the manga, but as individuals, our viewpoints are always narrow and anecdotal. The main idea behind the anime was to promote the live action films. How well they worked for that, I don’t know. The first film came out shortly after the anime started airing was in the top 10 for at least 7 weeks and had grossed ¥1.17bn by week 3. I assume that’s pretty good but don’t know much about live action film grosses in Japan.
But I guess that’s the gist of it. Kiseijuu’s audience was more interested in live action than anime. This isn’t too uncommon, by the way. Ao Haru Ride’s live action grossed at least ¥1.71bn after six weeks whereas the anime sold very little. Not all audiences are equally interested in anime.
Oh, I had no idea about that. That’s quite interesting. I was also surprised to see how little Ao Haru Ride sold but now it makes sense. Although isn’t making an anime just for the sake of promotion kind of a waste of money if you don’t intend on making money from the anime at all…
But what do I know, I have no idea how economics work.
It happens all the time for novels and manga and such. Now how often it’s successful, as in how often it raises sales of other media adequately enough to justify the production costs, is debatable. There’s of course always the hope the anime will do well on its own, but it is just one piece of a much larger pie.
Ao Haru Ride did a good job of giving the manga a boost as well so I’d say between the live action and the manga sales it was mission accomplished.
Parasyte manga ended in the ’90s and I’m not sure the reprint sold enough but the live action film did well and the reason for the long time between the manga and the anime and Japanese live action films coming out was that there was a Hollywood film rights purchase in the ’90s which expired recently so I expect they got money from that as well at the time even though they probably would have got more money if there had been royalties associated with a Hollywood release.
Some days we just have to be glad that things get made at all, shoujo and ’90s manga adaptations. I hope they make some money too but if not, I enjoyed them anyway.
A billion yen would be box office analogy to “manabi line” in the Japanese box office, so both films you mentioned would be considered successes.
Updated with the full ranking.
Checked the extended rankings for this week. About 50 DVDs and 95 BDs were new or added a week of ranking. As before, I’ll just highlight some updated v1s, BD boxes, and miscellaneous:
Nanatai v1 → 8,434
Drrr x2 v1 → 6,904
Wixoss s2 v1 → 3,066
Kamimashita s2 v1 → 1,365
Psycho-Pass BD Box → 9,717
Nanoha s3 BD Box → 8,588
Fafner BD Box → 3,047
DxD New BD Box → 1,977
Strike Witches OVA v1 → 20,363
Speaking of the Witches, Oricon’s extended rankings for v2 don’t include the Amazon version, just the non-Amazon version. Amazon versions are such a pain in the ass.
