Fall update:
Yowapedal s2 v1 sells 5961/5137, total 11,098. The event ticket is a pretty big deal for this one, but still a strong start, handily beats anything s1 sold (9,280 v1 with a very long tail) and ought to get to about 13k. v2 has an event ticket as well, so we have to see how v3+ fare. 8 volumes total.

Donten ni Warau v1 sells 1287/1542, total 2,829. Part one of a two-box release.

Girlfriend (kari) v1 sells 1961/648, total 2,609. Only four volumes, so I guess it should hold a 2k average?

Ai Tenchi Muyou v1 sells 1,107 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Yuyuyu v2 sells 7664/606, total 8,270. Way up from v1’s 5,320 v1, which is important because there’s no way v2 will have the 5.6k long tail v1 has had thus far. It needed a stronger wk1, and I’d say this qualifies! v2 ought to break 9k, though 10k is probably too optimistic. Certainly not looking at any big drops, though.
v1 adds 317 BDs, total 11,229 in wk6.

Psycho-Pass 2 v2 sells 4125/1036, total 5,161. Down 30.5% on v1wk1, so a pretty sizable event ticket drop. Will be bigger than that in the end because v1’s ail is longer than v2’s is likely to be. Not surprising but we can take this one out of the running for #2 of the season.

Crossange v2 sells 4506/423, total 4,929. Down 31.3% on v1wk1, about the same sizable ticket drop as PP2, and will also have less of a tail than v1. This is also now unexpectedly out of the running for #2 of Fall.

Trinity Seven v2 sells 2438/656, total 3,094. Basically no drop from v1wk1.

Ookami Shoujo v2 sells 370/273, total 643.

Shirobako v1 adds 586 BDs, total 8,509 in wk5.

Summer update:
Nobunaga Concerto sells 850 as a one-shot DVD release so that’s that.

Free! s2 v5 sells 9859/5849, total 15,708. Back down to earth with the event tickets over. A lot rides on wk2. Another 2k next week puts this near 18k, which would make v6-7’s job a bit easier for securing a 20k average.

Yamasusu s2 v5 sells 2,443 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Hanayamata v5 sells 2,105 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Akame ga Kill v4 sells 1351/365, total 1,716.

Rail Wars v5 sells 1415/281, total 1,696.

Aoha Ride v5 sells 594/749, total 1,343.

Jinsei v5 sells 776 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

P4GA v5 adds 457 BDs, total 6,890.

Past seasons:
Haikyuu v7 sells 8884/7252, total 16,136.

Captain Earth v7 sells 790 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Love Live! s2 v2 adds 379, total 58,400 in wk27.
v4 adds 268, total 52,376 in wk.
v6 adds 321, total 47,608 in wk.
v7, final volume, adds 1634, total 62,993. Series average: 62,456.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Yakuindomo OVA/OAD BD Box sells 1,091.

Yes! Precure 5 GoGo BD Box sells 976.

Ikamusume s2 BD Box sells 524.

Imas Cinderella PV disc adds 304 BDs, total 22,576 in wk10.

  1. something something says:

The battle for Fall 2014’s second place behind UBW has been narrowed a bit. The expected drop-outs are PP2 and Crossange due to steep post-event ticket declines. Amaburi is technically in the running based on v1 sales but I’m expecting enough of a v2 drop to take it out.

That leaves Yuyuyu as the frontrunner for a 11k v1 and probably 9k v2.
Behind that it’s a battle between two 2-cour series, Yowapedal (with its strong v1 and probably v2 event ticket boost) and Shirobako (with its long tail and probably consistent sales). I’m inclined to give Shirobako the slight edge there, but both seem to have a clear disavantage against Yuyuyu’s solid v1-2 performance.
Dark horse is G Reco. v2 sales should inform us as to whether v1 was misreported by Oricon (not counting Amazon edition) or not. If it was, then the workaround is to use Soundscan for wk1, which would put v1 around 10.5k. I feel like this is a long shot even then.

  2. Avatar AnimePhoenix says:

YowaPedaS2v1 did way beyond my expectations! I’m so happy for it. It’ll probably drop with v3+ but this is still good news. In other sports series, Haikyuu!! still doing great and Free!ES holding up. Hope it gets a decent second week.

Donten ni Warau sold more than I expected as well. Hope it can manage a second week, though it looks unlikely.
    of the season.

Shoujo anime continue to flop with Ookami Shoujo and AoHa Ride though their manga sales are doing great.

I hope Gugure! Kokkuri-san doesn’t drop too much next week.

    • something something says:

The good thing about second weeks now is that they’re basically guaranteed by the extended rankings as long as week 1 wasn’t *completely* dismal. So both formats of Donden ni Warau should get wk2s that way, I expect.

      • Avatar AnimePhoenix says:

When you put it that way, you’re right! That makes me very happy. I’ll be pleased if it can cross 3k or 3.5k.

  3. Avatar moonnya says:

How much do you think Nanatsu no Taizai will be ? Its got Aniplex and the % DVD is quite large. Here is the list of how much underrated of Aniplex show this year

    Nisekoi 86% BD
    Sekaai Seifuko almost nope
    Silver spoon 2 almost nope

Mek Actor almost 200% underated on both BD and DVD
    Mahouka 59% BD 32% DVD
Ping Pong 13% BD 112% DVD
    Mushishi almost nope
    RyuNanana almost nope

    SAO 2 58% BD 47% DVD
    Persona 4b 68% BD 44% DVD
    Ald 0 62% BD 50% DVD
    Kuroshitsuji 120%BD 46% DVD
    ZnT 32% BD 37% DVD

    • something something says:

It should be among the higher underestimations, because it’s one of the ones that only has Amazon editions on Amazon, like Persona, SAO II, Aldnoah, Kuroshitsuji. So, actually…. v1 could do pretty well. Like 6k would not be surprising.

There is an event ticket factored into that, though, and v2+ are tracking much lower. So just keep that in mind.

  4. Avatar Clotho says:

I must have missed oreca battle sales or either it didnt chart in its previous releases. Good series.

At least cfvanguard remains there, hope buddyfight grows to that level.

    • something something says:

It hasn’t charted before, no. And next week is so huge it probably won’t chart then either, thresholds will be too high. I’m not sure it’s ever made the Top 300 because none of the volumes are in Oricon’s extended ranking list.

  5. Avatar Jim says:

Yuki Yuna is a Blu-Ray Hero! Very happy to see that it’s still going strong. I was wondering how much of a bump v1 might have gotten from the visual novel bundle, but it looks like not that much. Or not to the extent of an event ticket bump, anyway.

Out of curiosity, do you know how Kiseijuu and Your Lie in April are tracking for their Feb/March releases right now? I know the latter is tougher to estimate because Aniplex, but I haven’t heard any pre-release buzz about either one, even though it seems like they’re getting decent viewership.

    • something something says:

Kiseijuu is looking as dead as dead can be, the estimate at the moment is barely 500 DVD+BD combined and no storefront presence.

Kimiuso ought to do alright for v1. Depending on the Aniplex underestimation, upwards of 5k maybe? v1 BD is doing decently if not astounding at other retailers. It’s on track for a fairly sharp drop after that, though. Probably not as much as Nanatai, but reasonably large. v1 is half price and includes an event ticket and a bunch of other extras.

  6. Avatar lester says:

Don’t like how that biking show beat Yuki Yuuna. The otaku is really losing foot. Makes me wonder how winter season will do.

    • something something says:

They’re totally different shows with totally different audiences, so it’s honestly not a competition. Also Yowapedal’s sales are very heavily boosted by an event ticket. When vol 3 rolls around it’s expected to drop considerably, while Yuyuyu should remain fairly consistent until the end.

This is why I always put this disclaimer on the Vol. 1 sales rankings: “Please note: Volume 1 sales are not the best, or even a particularly good, way to evaluate a series’ performance. Sometimes one of two formats doesn’t rank in volume 1, but ranks in a later volume. Often times volume 1 sales are inflated with bonuses like event tickets or bundled manga, etc. Always, always use the average sales when evaluating anime, not volume 1 sales.”

Lastly, this really isn’t “otaku vs everyone else” (especially when “everyone else” is usually implied to be “women”). That’s not a healthy way to think about the industry, and can generate some fairly toxic discussions, even though I’m sure that’s not your intention.

  7. Avatar Chipp12 says:

Even though anime adatation of AgK! sells like that the original manga sales went from 52,214 for vol.10 to 168,053 for vol.11. Quite a boost I have to say!

  8. Avatar peeyaj says:

    so, what’s more popular?

    Free!! or Haikyuu!!?

  9. Avatar peeyaj says:

Follow-up question: (based on disc sales)

Can you rank the most popular 2014 sports anime? and the most popular sports anime ever? (SD included)

    • something something says:

Measured by disc sales it would be:

      1. Haikyuu!!
      2. Free! -Eternal Summer-
      3. Yowamushi Pedal Grande Road (only 1 vol out, but presumably will beat Dia no A’s 5k)
      4. Diamond no Ace
      5. Saki Zenkoku-hen (I assume you mean more traditional sports though…)
      6. Ping Pong
      7. Baby Steps

There were also fandiscs or OVAs for Kurobas and Shin Tenipri, but no TV series. Also note I’m missing kids’ shows. Like, is Inazuma Eleven still going on? I don’t even know.

If you were to factor in manga or novels or merchandise or music or whatever else, the ranking could easily change, but for pure disc sales, this is the ranking.

The highest selling sports anime ever, measured by disc sales, is Free! season one with 29,108. although personally I’d count Girls und Panzer as a sports anime too, and that did 36,106.

  10. Avatar Sobnet says:

Good to see KyoAni still doing well financially.
I wouldn’t mind another male moe show from them after Free.

    • Avatar AnimePhoenix says:

      I second this!

Just two days back, I had a dream that they made a bishounen boy band anime. I was so sad after I woke up. It was a wonderful dream.

    • Avatar Mr. Peter says:

Well, we got brass band club in the horizon, and the synopsis seems like a genderbent Free. :p

      • something something says:

Free didn’t invent its archetypes or anything, and a brass band is not particularly like a swimming club. I don’t quite get the connection.

I suppose this is a step up from everyone describing shows as clones of K-ON! though…?

        • Avatar Mr. Peter says:

It’s the synopsis that reminded me of Free

“The anime begins when Kumiko Ōmae, a girl who was in the brass band club in junior high school, visits her high school’s brass band club as a first year. Kumiko’s classmates Hazuki and Sapphire decide to join the club, but Kumiko sees her old classmate Reina there and hesitates. She remembers an incident she had with Reina at a brass band club contest in junior high school… ”

Now replace the names with the Free guys and swimming!

        • Avatar Jim says:

That’s because nowadays everyone’s moved on to describing shows as clones of Madoka instead. Apparently this season’s target of “Madoka clone” scorn is KanColle, which I find hilarious because aside from putting moe-looking girls in the middle of deadly battles (as if no series ever did that before Madoka) the two have virtually nothing in common.

          • I couldn’t believe that was real, but I googled stuff in and there was a nonzero number of relevant results. Anime fans are lazy, lazy people.

Reminds me of people comparing Doug McDermott to Larry Bird.

  11. Avatar moodie says:

how are the stalker points for dance in the vampire bund?

  12. Avatar Gatmar says:

How much Rage of the Bahamut: Genesis vol 1 is expected to sell? i really hope it is successful… as do Log Horizon 2 even tough that one does not rely on sales due to being an NHK series.

    • something something says:

We only have one day of daily rankings so far this week, and it should in theory be Bahamut’s best day given that it appears to be exceptionally Amazon-heavy, and the first day is pre-release sales, which means online preorders, which basically means Amazon.

      *** **7 *** *** *** *** *** | — | 月刊少女野崎くん 5
      *** *10 *** *** *** *** *** | — | 神撃のバハムート GENESIS 1
      *** *12 *** *** *** *** *** | — | 蟲師 続章 4

It ranked between Nozaki-kun (5,958 v4 wk1 BD) and Mushishi (3,398 v1 wk1 BD) so that’s a pretty wide range. Given I expect it to plummet down to the mid-20s tomorrow (or certainly by the 29th), I’d bet on the lower end of that scale, or even less.

      As for Log Horizon:
      *** *17 *** *** *** *** *** | — | 普通の女子校生が【ろこどる】やってみた。 5
      *** *18 *** *** *** *** *** | — | ログ・ホライズン 第2シリーズ 1
      *** *19 *** *** *** *** *** | — | 魔弾の王と戦姫 2

Between Locodol (2,132 v4 wk1 BD) and Madan no Ou (2,550 v1 wk1 BD; expected to drop a good bit, maybe 2k or less this time) so it’s safe to expect this season to drop. I figure if s1 did 4k average, maybe 2.5k for s2?

      • Avatar moonnya says:

uhh, how exactly do you know the sale for Nozaki kun and the other 3? I only see the ranking in the link. I’m not good at reading sales report text like this, sorry for asking

        • something something says:

I was listing the sales of the previous volume, in order to provide a rough ballpark of how we should expect these volumes to sell.

  13. Avatar Anonymous says:

It seems Shirobako BD vol.2’s stock issue is even bigger than vol.1, wonder how much Warner shipped.

  14. Avatar ChocoBar9 says:

    Well…this is a shocker

    • something something says:

Which part do you find shocking?

      • Avatar ChocoBar9 says:

Shingeki’s numbers not being as high as a thought given stalker pts and the fact that it came woth a promo code. It was always gonna be Amazon heavy but I expected more from what is an extremely popular game.

        • something something says:

Ah, well, it was definitely very strongly hinted that Bahamut’s estimate was wildly off. A title hitting #1 for days at Amazon while almost never ranking anywhere else, then promptly sliding down to 500th and worse just screams “nobody is buying this outside of Amazon, don’t trust this estimate”. Selling half of the prediction would be about what I expect, any more would be a slight surprise.

If anything I anticipated its ranking to be lower today, but considering it’s behind even Sora no Method’s release day… sounds about right.

          • Avatar ChocoBar9 says:

It is doing worse than shirobako. That mean below amagi but probably higher than the rest. Pretty good for a mobage but it doesnt matter much since apparently Cygames just gave MAPPA the money to make it as promotion.

Well it’s doing quite a lot worse than Shirobako, not just a little. I expect Bahamut to sell 3.5-4k wk1.

Shirobako is also undestocked again and will see another long-ish tail, whereas Bahamut’s ranking is only going to go down from here.

It’s not selling abysmally or anything, but it’s basically looking at “average” at best.

    Updated for the full ranking.
