Go go Yuyuyu! Hell of a wk2, better than I could have hoped.
And it doesn’t look like G Reco is reconquering anything anytime soon. Holy shit, like we knew it would be quite overestimated but loooooooooooooooooooooooool what in the fucking hell?

Fall update:
Crossange v1 sells 6530/648, total 7,178. DVDs from the extended rankings. Will have second or third best v1 of the season but I didn’t realize that this is just because of an insane all-star event lineup. Expect lower sales for v2+.

Amaburi v1 sells 5838/588, total 6,446. DVDs from the extended rankings. Yep, expected that huge overestimation due to the Amazon box. Still good for an adaptation of a somewhat obscure light novel but it’ll drop for v2. Maybe 5k average? Solid sales, just not some break-out hit.

Shirobako v1 sells 5,725 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Underestimated as expected, given the high storefront rankings, even including Animate.

G Reco v1 sells 3864/837, total 4,701. The estimate was 17,643. SEVENTEEN THOUSAND. Yes we knew a lot of that was nonsense, but bwaaaaaah? 78.1% overstimated. The only worse overestimations are three volumes of Crime Edge but that’s such a low-selling show that, like, it barely counts as the same kind of thing? If the gap between prediction and reality for Reco were its own show, it’d be a lock for #2 seller of the season. Woah.

Gugukoku v1 sells 2152/2430, total 4,578. Event ticket.

Grisaia v1 sells 3082/499, total 3,581. DVDs from the extended rankings.

Madan no Ou v1 sells 2550/622, total 3,172. DVDs from the extended rankings.

OreTwi v1 sells 2125/399, total 2,515. DVDs from the ranking scrape.

Inou-battle v1 sells 1,491, BD-only release.

Chaika s2 v1 sells 866 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Sadness.

Daitoshokan v1 sells 833 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Ookami Shoujo v1 sells 315/432, total 747s, both formats taken from the extended rankings.

Denki-gai v1 sells 622 BDs, taken from the extended rankings.

Ushinawareta v1 sells 418 BDs, taken from the extended rankings.

Yuyuyu v1 adds 2905 BDs, total 8,225. That’s 60.7% as many BDs as wk1, a crazy huge wk2. Never thought it’d be *this* much! Here I would have been happy if v1 topped 7k, but it’ll be a lock for 9k now, especially if DVDs scored a wk2 in the extended ranking.

Summer update:
DRAMAtical Murder sells 1622/565, total 2,185. That’s also its series average because it’s a one-shot release.

SAO II v3 sells 13785/2825, total 16,610.

Nozaki-kun v4 sells 5958/2327, total 8,285. Thinking it’ll end up holding onto a 10k average if extended ranking additions patch in any missing wk2s in the future.

Aldnoah v4 sells 5901/821, total 6,722.

Barakamon v4, final volume, sells 4079/1683, total 5,762. Series average: 6,429 and extended ranking additions will bump that up (I’ll get there eventually! Don’t feel like looking it up right this second tho) since v3 never got a wk2.

Kuroshitsuji s3 v5, final volume, sells 2632/2365, total 4,992. Series average: 6,631. Respectable hold after 8.1k three years ago.

Prisma Illya s2 v4 sells 3,857 BDs, DVDs in the extended rankings.

Yama no Susume s2 v4 sells 2,639 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Tokyo Ghoul v4, final volume, sells 1679/694, total 2,373. Series average: 3,506.

Hanayamata v4 sells 2,197 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Locodol v4 sells 2,132 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Rokujouma v4 sells 1,401 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Jinsei v4 sells 807 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Free! s2 v4 adds 1711/1646, total 23,470. Slightly better wk2 than v3. 22.5k average after 4 of 7 volumes, and the remaining three will each just need to clear ~17k to secure the 20k average with no other additions. Looking good!

Past seasons:
Love Live! v7, final volume, sells 51,985. About a 10-12k bump (not counting v6’s obvious wk1 stock issues) on the previous v2+. Whether this is real sales or a significant understock like v6wk1, I suppose wk2 will tell. It’ll sell at least 10k next week regardless.
v6 adds 1187, total 45,733.

Mahouka v6 sells 7560/2064, total 9,624. This volume will cross 10k, so I’m thinking Mahouka will keep its 10k at this rate.

Mekakushi v11 sells 2866/2345, total 5,211.
v12, final volume, sells 2903/2342, total 5,245.
Series average: 7,172. It’s gained a few hundred from the extended rankings, so when these two volumes get their wk2s, it’ll end around 7.3k.

Daimidaler v6, final volume, sells 1,332 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 1,873.

ZanTero v4 sells 884 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Space Dandy v9 sells 791 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Haikyuu!! v6 adds 1515/1574, total 18,992.

Jojo s2 v6 adds 1233 BDs, total 9,946.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Kurobas s2 fandisc sells 6094/9275, total 15,369.

∀Gundam BD Box v2 sells 3,926.

Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu BD Box v3 sells 2,104.

Jormungand BD Box sells 1,771.

HS DxD BD Box sells 1,491.

TLR Darkness BD Box sells 964/315 LE/RE, total 1,274. REs from the extended rankings.

BroCon OVA adds 1103/1036 LE, 180 BD RE, total 8,888. BS RE from

Yeah that’s it. Breathing room for wk2s.

  1. Avatar Natapori says:

I’m suprise for G-reco and Amagi.Or Oricon don’t count for Amazon Edition with this. Please,Tell me.I’m curious so much.

    • Avatar Ejc says:

Amazon reports its Amazon exclusive LE and non-Amazon exclusive LE as a combined number to Oricon. It is obvious that Amagi was so Amazon biased, it was overestimated as hell, and Gundam was up on Stalker for so long, that it amassed way too many points.

      • something something says:

Length of time wasn’t really the issue for Reco, it was that goooooofy as fuck 10k rush after the three episode pre-air. That plus the Amazon-exclusive steelbook just murdered its prediction. The Amazon LE version alone did 55% of its points in just the first 10 days, at which point it was already more than double the actual final sales!

But this is SUCH a ludicrous gap that I feel like it goes beyond both those factors and probably involves unusually heavy cancellations too. I think the first three episodes got a lot of people excited… people that then saw the rest of the show and went “ehhhhh… nope”.

  2. Avatar Anon says:

Given the G-Reco disaster, I suppose the Yuyuyu is the last remaining long shot of picking up a second 10k series for the Fall season.

    • something something says:

10k seems a tough road for Yuyuyu, so yeah I agree it’s definitely a very long shot. v1 has some chance of hitting 10k but I can’t see any way of v2+ maintaining that.

And yet it’s probably still #2 of the season, depending on how Crossange or Psycho-Pass do. And I’m still sorta keeping my eye on Yowapedal. But yikes, Fall really imploded on the high end. Though there will be a healthy pool of 5k+ sellers.

  3. Avatar rederoin says:

G reco migth have suffered from people cancelling pre-orders, its rank before airing and after airing would make sense then.

Aside from large scale pre-order trolling, nothing else makes sense.

  4. Avatar Mr. Peter says:

Dammit, I wanted KyoAni to have their new otaku cash cow to milk. Now it seems on part with Full Metal Panic: TSR.

God I hope Sound! Euphonium becomes a massive hit for them.

  5. Avatar Primadog says:

Wow, incredibly high cut-offs this week. Hope it calms down a bit Thursday.

  6. Avatar Anonymous says:

Somehow, i think Shirobako have chance to beat Amagi

    • Avatar Zhou says:

Here’s hoping Shirobako has a shot at a 5k average. Unlike Cross Ange, the first volume didn’t include an event ticket, right?

I’m a bit disappointed that Amagi didn’t do better, though. While I didn’t enjoy it as much as Shirobako, I thought it was KyoAni’s best show since Hyouka.

      • something something says:

Crossange didn’t ha- oh shit you’re right it does. Amazon’s description never mentioned it but the official site does. And with an INSANE lineup:
        Mizuki Nana
        Tamura Yukari
        Kitamura Eri
        Kuwashima Houko
        Ishihara Kaori
        Koshimizu Ami
        Ogura Yui
        Uesaka Sumire
        Touyama Nao

Holy crap. Yeah okay wow, I was thinking Crossange would hold these sales and be a contender for #2, but no way, it’ll definitely drop for v2. So following Valvrave sales seems more and more likely.

        • Avatar Progeusz says:

There’s no way Nana Mizuki’s anime would have no event!
I’m really glad she likes having fun with her anime and they are created according her wishes, I want more of this kind. Symphogear S3 date confirmation please.

    • Avatar Primadog says:

Shirobako has an handicap in that it’s two cour, so it will suffer more volume-to-volume drop.

      • something something says:

It’s actually only one volume longer than Amaburi so that won’t be a factor. Amaburi will sell less because v1 is boosted by the artbox, which requires only a vol. 1 purchase rather than an all-volume purchase.

  7. Avatar Jim says:

    “That’s 0.7% as many BDs as wk1, a crazy huge wk2.”

Think you have a typo, there. It’s 60.7% if my math is right, no?

Of course, as a YuYuYu fan I’m thrilled to see it doing so well.

  8. Avatar anonymous says:

So realistically speaking, since Kadokawa is happy with Amabri sales and the anime is selling decently at 6k right now and we’ll probably finish at a 5-6k avg, is a season 2 out of the question? Assuming no problems on KyoAni and Kadokawa’s side and based strictly off numbers of LN sales and BD sales.

    • something something says:

I don’t see a second season being possible, no. If you’re Kadokawa, all you’re realistically expecting is an initial boost to novel sales. Amaburi got that, but the boost wasn’t massive enough, nor the anime a big enough hit on its own, to make investing in a second season appealing. The anime has already done its job, and done it modestly well (but not amazingly).

That first anime adaptation (almost) always realizes the biggest return on investment, with sharply diminishing returns with every sequel. If you’re starting sky high like Bakemonogatari, then you can keep doing sequels and profit heavily almost no matter how much it drops. But when you’re only starting from “a bit above average” like with Amaburi, way less incentive.

The gains that could realistically be expected from a sequel are, from Kadokawa’s perspective, minimal. I assume they’ll choose to put their money towards a totally different series that hasn’t received anime exposure yet instead. And I assume Takemoto and KyoAni have other things they’d like to work on now too.

      • Avatar anonymous says:

Do you think it’s decent enough for Kadokawa and KyoAni to keep working together? I’d like to see more of their novels get adapted by KyoAni.

        • something something says:

They worked together this time because the KyoAni director and the author are friends. I don’t think Amaburi’s performance will specifically increase or decrease the chances of more Kadokawa-led adaptations.

What’s really exciting is Hibike! Euphonium, which is published by Takarajimasha. They’re a fairly small player from what I can tell, and I don’t know if they’ve ever published something that was adapted into an anime before. They primarily publish fashion magazines aimed at girls and women.

If you scroll down to the bottom of the official anime website http://anime-eupho.com/ you can see that KyoAni leads the production committee, ahead of Pony Canyon (video distro), Lantis (music distro) and Rakuonsha (audio recording/production). Takarajimasha, the publisher, isn’t even on the committee. I guess this means KyoAni still wanted to run everything in-house, but weren’t ready to use another KA Esuma title, so they purchased the rights or whatever the correct terminology is. This seems like a promising approach for them to both be able to select what they like (and not limit to what’s submitted to KA Esuma) while retaining internal control of the production process. They’ll obviously need to focus on little known titles, of course. I doubt they could afford to snag a big manga or novel title from a major publisher, and it’d be a terrible idea to take that kind of risk anyway. But if they find some gems, or at least something they can work their magic on to polish into a gem, that’s fine by me.

  9. Avatar abdullah says:

what about space dandy? did it sell well in japan?

    • something something says:

You can check averages and per-volume sales from the pages linked in the Table of Contents page. But in short it, uh, sold very little.

  10. Avatar Legit says:

Poor anime sales due to holiday seasons. I spent my $$$ on PS4.

    • something something says:

Holidays don’t mean poor anime sales, they just means big sales across the board so thresholds are very high. We’ll get rankings in the extended lists tho.

  11. Avatar Anonymous says:

Seems still no one release the full rankings, is because holiday?

  12. something something says:

Did a quick and dirty skim through the Oricon public site, which finally updated, and grabbed some additional v1 DVD numbers:

    Amagi ~584 (6,442)
    Crossange ~654 (7,184)
    Grisaia ~500 (3,582)

    Stuff without BDs just yet:
    Ou Vanadis ~632
Gundam BFT ~464 (BD box in March will get the bulk of sales, singles are DVD only)
    Ookami ~432
    Twintail ~400

Shirobako seems to have missed the weekly top 300 cutoff so no estimate.

Didn’t look at BDs yet considering we’re going to get that when Oricon releases the full weekly ranking anyway.

I’ll be re-scraping and checking the data more formally when I get home, so this is just preliminary and the numbers above may shift a few discs either way.

      • Avatar Anonymous says:

Wait i made a mistake of Vanadis BD, thought it’s 2×2553 bewteen Vanadis lol.

      • something something says:

Yeah I went through the DVDs more formally last night and adjusted as needed in my spreadsheet. I choose the lower end of a range tho, so 588 for Amagi DVD, 622 for Vanadis.

BDs I’ll probably just wait for the full list to be posted to the archive thread, but might go through the additions from this week if it takes too long. I need to go through for the stuff that won’t rank anyway I suppose, like Ushinawareta and Oookami Shoujo.

  13. something something says:

Okay I said I’d do it later but I figured I needed to check the BDs for wk2s and stuff that won’t rank, so I went through the additions for this week…

Lots of stuff gets added behind the scenes to older titles! Unfortunately it’s not feasible for me to write up everything that I updated in a post. So I guess what you want to keep in mind is that these posts here will only include comments on:
    1. Stuff that ranked, which you’d normally see comments on
    2. v1s or maybe some wk1s of stuff that missed the rankings entirely.

For example, once the full ranking is up I’ll compare it to my estimates from the BD ranking scrape, and fix any that are off, and do the usual weekly full list comments.

But I’ll also note some other stuff of potential interest. For example, Ushinawareta v1 (#157 for the week) isn’t going to rank, but from the ranking scrape we know that it sold 418 BDs. Ookami Shoujo v1 (#201 for the week BD) sold 315 BDs plus ts 432 DVDs and also won’t rank. And so on.

So I’ll try to add stuff like that. I’m not, however, going to take the time to write up comments like how SAO II v1 added another 100-some or whatever in week 9 or Macross F BD set got a 17th week. There’s so much of this junk I couldn’t ever find the time and it’d be a nightmare trying to jot it all down as I do the updates. I’ll just record the data in my spreadsheet, and it’ll be reflected in the seasonal/yearly/etc rankings after each Ranking Summary update.

In short, don’t use the weekly posts for the “definitive” number for any release. But you shouldn’t be doing that anyway – there are already monthly, mid-year, and yearly adjustments, after all, which don’t get reflected in the weekly ranking posts. Just think of this as something like that, but on a lager scale.

    Updated for the full ranking.

Oricon released both this and last week together and I can’t spare the time for both right now, so I’ll just link the untranslated additions for 12/29 – 01/04 over in a comment in that post now, and do the full ranking later.

      >Chaika s2 v1 sells 866 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Sadness.
      >Daitoshokan v1 sells 833 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

      >Not yet ranked v1s this week:
      >Daitoshokan no Hitsujikai
      >Hitsugi no Chaika Avenging Battle

Oh right, forgot to update that list, which also reminds me I forgot to add the extended ranking sales for Ushinawareta, Ookami Shoujo, and Denki-gai. I’ve done that now, thanks for the heads up.

Hope Gugukoku won’t drop much v2+. It was a fun little show. Still, it got a good manga boost. Aaaand Ookami Shoujo, another shoujo anime flops. Sighhhhh. Shoujo just can’t get a lucky break can it? Speaking of flops, poor ZanTerror…

On the upside, good to see Barakamon, Free! ES, the KuroBasu fandisc and the BroCon OVA doing well.

P.S I’m surprised DMMD actually sold that much.
