Locodol 4k! Can we please pretend v2 isn’t going to drop to like 2k?

Summer update:
Sailor Moon v1 sells 3,651 BDs, DVDs aren’t out for another month (weird ass solicits). 19.8% overestimation! I had a hunch it was Amazon-biased. RIP SMC, sure v1 could top 5k or even 6k with some long tail and maybe 600 DVDs but sales are going to be quite a nasty sight by vol 13. Who thought a decades-late reboot of a kids’ shoujo being sold on 13 discs for two cour was a remotely sane idea?

Akame ga Kill v1 sells 2378/776, total 3,154. Fully 51.7% underestimated on BD so clear storefront bias. Still, this volume has an event ticket.

Free! s2 v2 sells 10767/6373, total 17,140. Only 4.8% behind v1wk1, which is a good sign seeing as how this vol had no event ticket. It should be able to pass 20k by wk3 or monthlies. So now Free! s2’s shot ta a 20k average is all about how v3-4 do with the event tickets. We know the effect won’t be large based on s1, but if they can hold over 20k, then that’s 4 of 7 volumes over 20k. The rest may drop it below, but at worst the average should be almost 20k.
v1 adds 194 BDs, total 21,475 in wk5, meaning it added 151 in wk4. Small additions, but I’ll take anything it can scrounge up!

Ao Haru Ride v2 sells 719/1021, total 1,740. Woooooow, that nosedive, down 44.5%.

Nozaki-kun v1 adds 386/226, total 14,878 in wk4.

P4GA v2 adds 578/215, total 8,815. Probably last rank (maybe one more BD), but 39.9% down on v1.

Barakamon v1 adds 281, total 7,485 in wk4.

Locodol v1 adds 201 BDs, total 4,017. 4k get! Well okay, 3,617 BDs plus somewhere between 344 and 440 DVDs. I estimated 400 based on the ranking, so here you go! But it’s anywhere between 3,961 and 4,057.

Blade Dance v1 adds 190 BDs, total 2,142.

Ai Mai Mii s2 adds 244 BDs, total 928 as one-shot release.

Spring update:
Haikyuu!! v4 sells 9705/8352, total 18,057. Slightly above v3wk1, so I think it will be consistent from here on out. Of course, its wk2s are a huge part of sales. 25k average is probably its absolute max, more likely in the 23-24k range.
v3 adds 207/241, total 23,579.

Mekakushi v8 adds 580/618, total 6,107. Only 81 discs below v7wk2 so after its couple vols of drops, this has settled to a consistent level, varying a bit with number of weeks ranked. Looking at around a 7k average.

Isshukan v5 sells 2396/492, total 2,888.

Akuma no Riddle v5 sells 832/254, total 1,086. That feeling of being glad to see even 4 digits… I think it’s called sadness. =(

Love Live! s2 v2 adds 205, total 54,944 in wk13.
v3 adds 214, total 48,784 in wk8.
v4 adds 421, total 47,996 in wk4. Looking more like this will end up around 66-67k, if the next three volumes go 50k/50k/100k. 62-63k if 50k/50k/70k.

Black Bullet v4 adds 196 BDs, total 2,330.

Past seasons:
Yowapedal v11 sells 2279/1998, total 4,277. Looks like another lower-seling volume like v9, but with a 5.7k average and only two volumes to go, ending over 5k is a lock now. For a 13 disc series – fairly impressive.

Monogatari v11 adds 518 BDs, total 35,147 in wk4. Even with another 1.5k or so Aniplex+ bump this is still going to be the lowest-selling arc by a modest margin.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Psycho-Pass BD Box sells 7,251. That’s huuuuuuge, and it could well pass s1’s 8,474 average. It’s super rare fr boxes to do that and we have this right after Nanoha s1 doubles its singles sales. Clearly the re-airing was a success, and this could bode well for s2 having very little drop from v1. (Or it could pull a Yama no Susume instead and have great s1 re-release sales but drop s2…)

Sekai Seifuku OVA sells 2432/320, total 2,752.

Yuru Yuri s2 BD Box sells 2,182. Decently solid for a 7.3k selling show.

Magic Kaito BD Box sells 200.

Idolmaster Movie adds 3057/426 LEs, 317 RE BDs, total 74,791. Taaaaaaalk about front-loaded, wow. Tiny tiny wk2. Maybe it’s aiming to end at 76.5k (the movie sadly ranked again and went from ¥765m to ¥773m and ruined the perfect number!)

Tamako Love Story adds 1351/385, total 13,007. No big wk2, but might not have fully restocked yet.

Nanoha s1 BD Box adds 253, total 9,184. 9k! 10k looks out of reach but damn this is good. Given this franchise never dies, but only gets stronger, I have to start thinking of Vivid as a potential top seller in its season… though as a spinoff, maybe all bets are off, like Illya’s meager sales compared to other Fate stuff.

  1. mk03 says:

So, when is Argevollen supposed to be released? I haven’t seen any release date for it.

    • something says:

I though you’d been looking at its Stalker predictions and such quite often? Date is listed for each release they track, Argevollen is Oct 29.

  2. something says:

A bit of guesstimating for Free! s2.

v2 being so consistent with v1 – in fact it’s slightly more storefront heavy – isn’t something I expected despite the estimates, so that’s really promising. v1 did not have a big wk2-3 (only added 3,261) so I don’t think v2 will fall far behind. At worst it should sell slightly under 20k.

v3 is currently estimated by Stalker at 15,965. Compare that to 11,040 for v2! If v3 were equally as underestimated as v2, that would mean 24,425 wk1. Which would be a big jump for the event ticket, but I find it very unlikely v3 will actually be as underestimated as v2. Nonetheless, when you’re working with that much of a buffer, a 20k wk1 seems like a given. Unless the estimate drops a lot over the coming month.

v4 also has an event ticket, but it’s two months out so I won’t guess at that yet. Whether it can sell 20k will be clearer when we see how v3 does.

v7 has the OVA, which probably won’t boost sales a ton, but should help a little.

That leaves v5-6 as the weak links in the quest for 20k average. If v3-4 do much better than I expect, they could build up enough buffer (especially if v2 does cross 20k and v7 maybe hits 20k too?) to keep sales over 20k. And v2 having such a small drop on v1 gives hope that it’s not just v1/event tickets/OVA vols that will sell around 20k.

You know what I say about optimism, so I try not to engage in that. Buuuuuuuut things are looking somewhat more positive for its 20k chances than I expected after v1’s opening week.

  3. Drago says:

But isnt Sailor Moon Crystal a limited edition that cost like almost 80 dollars?
I think it sold well, the normal edition will be out in November 12

    • something says:

For the anime industry, LEs are the only versions that matter. Nobody buys REs. Most releases only have “limited editions” and in 99% of cases they’re not “limited” at all. So basically, it’s a marketing gimmick, not an actual product anyone is expected to buy. The only exceptions are, occasionally, movies and boxsets.

Also, ¥8k isn’t that uncommon! All the remaining BDs for it are still ¥7k anyway. Anime is just that expensive in Japan.

SMC will add more in a month, but not from the “regular edition” of the BD, but rather from the (only version of the) DVD, which is coming out for the first time next month. Some people still prefer DVD in 2014, for some reason! But it’ll only be maybe 500 additional sales.

      • Drago says:

Will it have a chance for second season then? Because the sales are not that big but some like Tokyo Ghoul who had lower sales did get another season?

        • something says:

I believe Tokyo Ghoul is split cour, i.e. planned as two seasons to begin with. That’s usually how shows with modest to low sales get sequels. See also Chaika. (Though Tokyo Ghoul also has a very successful manga, which got a solid boost from the anime – that’s important.)

Whether Sailor Moon Crystal gets a sequel probably depends little on disc sales. Sailor Moon is such a huge franchise that I imagine its other revenue streams, while obviously much smaller than at their peak, are way more important than BDs.

But in Sailor Moon’s case I think it will really depend on whether they planned to do more from the start. With it running for a year thanks to the insane two weeks per ep schedule, I don’t think we’ll know their plans for a long time.

      • yuyu says:

well the only version of DVD you said about is the regular edition DVD they have no limited edition for DVD

        • something says:

That’s sort of my point – the idea of “limited edition” and “regular edition” doesn’t really mean anything here. There is no “regular edition DVD” in any meaningful sense because there’s only one version of the DVD to begin with..

And while there is both a “limited” and “regular” BD version, the regular BD version sells virtually zero. Look at Love Live s2 for a really clear example: it’s one of the exceptionally rare REs that actually ranked, but sales look like this:

          v1 LE – 113,285. v1 RE – 396

          I mean, jeeze.

You can also look at rankings on Amazon for LE vs RE. Sailor Moon Crystal v1 LE BD, median rank 321. RE BD, median rank 18,775. And its RE is actually doing proportionally better than most! With thresholds low enough it could maaaaaaybe rank, which would be the lowest selling show to have an RE rank ever. Still, odds are very very low of even that happening.

I have the hardest time trying to find a non-convoluted way to explain this, because it really is unintuitive as hell. I think a lot of us consider a “limited edition” to be a special limited-supply version not intended to be in stock for long. But with anime, the “limited edition” is, in nearly all cases, the “normal” version that you’re going to see in shops and see available for order for years.

Not infrequently, it’s the only version for sale at all.

  4. Clotho says:

Why buy an s2 individual disc for pyscho pass, when they could just rerelease a bd box of that as quick as they did for s1, though then again it is not as long as s1 was so maybe people wont be willing to wait.

    • 1.5 years is a decent amount of time to wait. Plus, the singles come with extras (PP s2 v1 has a Drama CD, a 100 page booklet, and a calendar) that are often fairly sexy and don’t always make it into the box.

    • something says:

Japanese buyers haven’t been conditioned to skip singles and wait for cheap boxsets like American fans (many of whom are so spoiled they tend to consider even $40 for a whole cour unreasonable!). There has been some grumbling in Japan about some of Kadokawa’s BD boxes, but that’s largely because Kadokawa’s singles are often insanely expensive even by Japanese anime industry standards so people who shelled out for them feel a bit miffed.

In any case, I don’t think any appreciable number of sales will be lost for season two due to people holding out for a boxset. Releasing a box of the first season upon release of the sequel is fairly standard practice.

  5. rederoin says:

    >Ao Haru Ride v2 sells 719/1021, total 1,740. Woooooow, that nosedive, down 44.5%.

    Seems its heading for a below P4GA v2 adds 578/215, total 8,815

it’ll probably get a 7k-8.5k average at this rate.

  6. anonymous says:

Really hoping SAO II sells at least half of the first season’s average.I really enjoyed the show.

  7. foolish says:

Ah well, sad to see Rurumo drop off the list. I guess I was hoping for better.

  10. AnimePhoenix says:

I had to drop Sailor Moon, it was just too boring for me and the animation and derpy faces…ugh. I’m amazed it got this much sales as it is. Toei should have done a better job on it.

Nozaki-kun, Barakamon, Haikyuu!! and YowaPeda doing nicely, good news!

A real shame about Ao haru ride, but its shoujo, so what do you expect? Sigh. Still, it got a great manga boost. Isshuukan too, is a bit low but hopefully it adds more BDs and reached 3k next week. Isshuukan also got a great manga boost, from not ranking at all to 120k!

And I’m so happy about the Psycho Pass BOX! Season 2 looks ok on Stalker so far, let’s hope it can keep the momentum.
