Holy shit that threshold is heinous. And of course means no possible way Sakura Trick could have ranked again, which sucks because this is going to be its best selling volume, for what that’s worth.

And the Winter sub-3k sellers continue to mount.

(Also ahhh today is crazy and this ended up taking me forever and ever)

Winter update:
Nisekoi v1 sells 4760/1686, total 6,446. So well what do you know, the first massively underestimated series this season is one that has had multiple other shows consistently beating it at almost every non-Amazon store, but it’s still 86% underestimated on BD because… !?!? Now you see why I’ve totally given up on following storefront sales, they really make no sense. Still, this volume does have an event ticket, so we’ll have to see how v2 hold up. And even that massive underestimation only has it on par with a couple other v1s, none of which are doing amazing or anything either. Winter, what a season.

Noragami v1 sells 2784/3029, total 5,813. Only 16% underestimated on DVD, though 39% underestimated on BD.

Witch Craft Works v1 sells 4,418 as a BD-only release. Yeah this show just sorta… fizzled. Even slightly overestimated by Stalker. After that seemingly strong run (well, strong relatively – which is the issue) it never recovered, and now it’s probably just going to average like 4k. \Winter 2014/

Maken-ki s2 v1 sells 2758/640, total 3,398

Wake Up Girls! v1 sells 2,959 as a BD only release.

D-Frag! v1 sells 2,691 BDs, DVDs do not rank. I didn’t really notice earlier but this is a 77.6% underestimate, what the hell? I TOLD YOU STOREFRONT EFFECT MAKES NO SENSE ANYMORE!

Inarikonkon v1 sells 1,977 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Imocho v1 sells 1,742 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Miss Monochrome v1 sells 1,483 BDs, DVDs do not rank.
v2 sells 1,474.
Series average: 1,479.
All this time I thought they were just two versions of the same one-shot release, but I checked CDJapan and actually Black is v1 (eps 1-7) and White is v2 (eps 8-13). They just came out on the same day and didn’t use volume numbering. I guess Stalker didn’t realize either since they listed both in their v1 tables.

BuddyCom v1 sells 1,141 as a BD-only release.

Mikakunin v1 adds 1055 BDs, total 7,417.

Chuunibyou Ren v1 adds 945 BDs, total 7,200.

Saki v1 adds 837 BDs, total 5,917.

Fall update:
Gundam Build Fighters v1 sells 3845/2483 LE/RE, total 6,328 BD boxes. I need to figure out how to calculate v1 totals… maybe take the average of the first four DVDs? It doesn’t even line up nicely as a 4/4, with 9 DVDs but 2 BD boxes. Complications argh. I guess I’ll go with that though, which will put it at 545 + 3845 + 2483 = 6,873 at the moment.

Kurobas s2 sells 8937/9542, total 18,479. Well that handily beats v1 or v2 wk1s! It’s less than 1k behind v2’s total already.

IS2 v5 sells 9742/2394, total 12,136. This pretty definitively settles that Winter will be Kurobas first, IS2 second.

LitBus Refrain v5 sells 7406/1380, total 8,786.

Non Non v4 sells 6653/666, total 7,319. Ooh, how evil. So close to a double 666.

Strike The Blood v3 sells 4052/1001, total 5,053.

Log Horizon v3 sells 3061/824, total 3,885. Up 1.6% on v2wk1, so that’s nice. wk2 data would put both v2 and v3 over v1’s wk3 total most likely, too bad v2 didn’t rank again.

Magi v3 sells 1473/2283, total 3,756.

Valvrave 2nd v4 sells 2888/855, total 3,743.

Machine Doll v4 sells 2862/728, total 3,590.

White Album 2 v4 sells 2,972 as a BD-only release.

NagiAsu v4 sells 2,855 BDs, DVDs do not rank. 5% higher than v3wk1.

Freezing s2 v4 sells 1,669 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Tokyo Ravens v4 sells 1,573 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Yuushibu v4 sells 1,341 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Blazblu v4 sells 1,020 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Noucome v4 sells 867 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Golden Time v4 sells 778 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Yowapedal v4 adds 648 DVDs, total 5,743.

Summer update:
Monogatari v6 sells 33264/3964, total 37,228.
v5 adds 1612 BDs, total 40,405. Hitting that 40k thanks to the pt2 boost.

DxD New v6, final volume, sells 6352/1675, total 8,027. Series average: 9,001 and it should add a bit more later.

Neptune v7, final volume, sells 4571/1112, total 5,683. More than double previous DVD sales but a more modest BD bump. It was only slightly underestimated rather than the 25%+ of other recent volumes, which means it is still the best selling volume but not quite as high as I’d hoped. Still, the mini-nendo and OVA did decently. Series average: 4,681.

Tamayura v6, final volume, sells 3,394. Series average: 4,245, not a bad drop from s1’s 4,831, only 12% down. Glad to see it hold up.

Love Lab v7, final volume, sells 1,747 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 3,207. This is a great example of how sometimes not ranking is the best thing you can do for a show’s reported average (though not real world sales of course). The final average consists of 954 DVD + 2,253 BD, but that DVD average comes from one lone volume, the v1 w/event ticket which is way inflated over what the other DVD volumes could have sold. If they all ranked, the combined average would be more like 2.7-2.8k because DVDs would have averaged about 400-500 less. THis is one of the biggest upward skews, percentage-wise, I’ve seen due to incomplete rankings.

Uchouten v7, final volume, 1,498 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 1,649.

Gin no Saji v6, final volume, sells 1121/717, total 1,838. Series average: 2,078.

Past seasons:
Shingeki v9, final volume, adds 2628/1648, total 37,972. Series average: 50,242. 50k is now official.

Hakkenden v13, final volume, sells 1261/606, total 1,867. Series average: 1,976 so far.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Geass R2 BD Box sells 12,135 which is better than s1wk1. Puts it at #15 in the BD Box ranking.

HidaSketch Hoshimitsu BD Box sells 2,610. Big drop from s1 and s2, which sold over 4k, but those seasons were DVD only so a lot of sales were format upgrades.

Urusei Yatsura BD Box v4, final volume, sells 2,345. The four boxes combined average 2,514 with total sales of 10,055.

AnoHana Movie adds 726 SLE BDs, total 42,276.

  1. kViN says:

Even if you tried explaining Nisekoi’s case with its Animate presence it makes absolutely no sense. We know for a fact that it’s the retailer moving the most sales so ranking there being way more important than anywhere else isn’t that surprising, even if we’ve seen plenty of heavily underestimated series that only seemed to dominate in other stores like HMV and Gamers. The thing is, we’ve had other shows this season that consistently popped up on Animate’s lists. Mikakunin did so way more often yet ended up with a lot less underestimation, both percentage and unit-wise. Storefront is fucking magic and I refuse to try and understand it anymore.

Also nothing even ranked, RIP anime.

    • something says:

I know right? Do not fucking get it at all. It did rank at Gamers sometimes while Mikakunin did not but HAHAHA FUCK GAMERS.

And yes the following all missed the prelim cutoff, BDs of which will all rank; any unranked now on DVD are extremely unlikely to rank in the full list:
      D-Frag! DVD/BD
      Noragami BD
Buddy Complex BD (no DVD ver sold)
      ImoCho DVD/BD
      pupa DVD/BD
Wake Up, Girls! BD (no DVD ver sold)
      Inari Konkon DVD/BD
      Maken-ki BD

  2. mistress_kisara says:

3K for Noragami is ok I guess, too bad it didn’t make it on the prelim BD list, i’tll probably be around 2K for BDs

    • something says:

If BDs are underestimated the same as DVDs, probably like 2.1 or 2.2k, yeah. So a bit north of 5k for v1 w/event ticket. Figure v2 stays close, then after that it drops… maybe 4-4.2k average (considering wk2s)?

    • AnimePhoenix says:

Noragami was out of stock for a while on Amazon so I assume it had a familiar situation in other stores as well. So I hope it will have a stronger week 2.

  3. tuna says:

no buddycum? Or do I have its release week wrong?

    • something says:

Comes out this week, but it’ll be lucky to sell 1k so no way it could make the prelim threshold. We’ll see it on Thursday.

      • pippi says:

You make it sound it’s going to be the worst-selling Studio 8 title or even Sunrise title in general since Sacred Seven.

        • something says:

As far as late night goes (I’m sure Sunrise has done some kids’ shows that understandably sell less since then), probably? I mean, even Sacred Seven averaged 1,631 which could be almost twice what Buddy Complex averages.

They do already have one show since Sacred Seven that sold less than it: Binbougami ga! sold 1,213 in 2012 (if we’re talking Sunrise in general, haven’t looked up which shows are Studio 8 specifically).

But Buddy Complex is likely to sell less than both, yes, unless it gets some storefront boost.

          • sinderblock says:

It makes me wonder if the impending bad sales will make them reconsider a “Season 2”, or they probably knew it’s going to be split cour and just trudging along.

            • something says:

They would have had an idea of how bad sales were for the past few months, but production decisions are often made a year or more in advance, so I’d say it’s already well underway. It’s extremely, extremely rare for any show to get cancelled after being announced. Some shows just never materialize, but an ongoing show stopping short, or an announced split cour not animating the second cour, is (almost) unheard of.

              • hpulley says:

I am surprised they announced it. Seems it was a secret second cour that didn’t need to be made but these are the mysteries of why some things get second cour or seasons and others do not. I guess they had enough done already? Wanted to finish it for completeness?

                • AnimePhoenix says:

I wonder how the merchandise is selling?

                • something says:

It’s like 99.9% guaranteed it was intended two cour from the start in a situation like this, I’d say.

                  • hpulley says:

Intended yes I’d say but if you don’t announce it as two cour from the beginning then you have a chance to say, “nope, hot happening, let’s just stop after one cour.” But they didn’t so I’m interested. Either the disc sales really are just a small part of the overall puzzle or plan or they’d already invested enough in the second cour that they figured it was better to finish it than to throw away what had been done. I’d love to know which way it went or something completely different but we’ll probably never know.

                    • something says:

While it making money through other sources isn’t out of the question, I would speculate that it’s just a lot more complicated to pull the plug on a production at this point than we may think. They surely already have two cour contracts signed with seiyuu and broadcasters and merchandising tie-ins and all that, and plenty of work already done.

              • Primadog says:

Looks like Hamatora was supposed to be 2-cour:

  4. AnimePhoenix says:

Nisekoi is definitely a mystery. Let’s see how volume 2+ hold up. I think it’ll end up averaging 4.5k or so.

Noragami was out of stock on Amazon for a few days so I hope that means a stronger week 2.

  5. krea says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if many people bought Nisekoi at the Aniplex shop.

    • something says:

I guess that definitely would count for some, but it would have to be a surprisingly large amount to start explaining this.

If we ballpark Monogatari’s wk1 Aniplex+ sales as roughly =equivalent to the number of arc part 1 copies added at the release of arc part 2, because Aniplex was supposedly holding both to ship as a set or whatever (some of those 1500 added BDs would be from other shops, but surely some Aniplex+ buyers didn’t buy both together; let’s assume this equals out), then it makes up approximately 3.7% of that show’s BD sales. The equivalent for Nisekoi would be under 200 BDs.

But of course this ballpark could be totally off. It’d be reasonable to expect that a show with much lower sales would have a higher percentage of core buyers, who would be on average more likely to pay more for some Aniplex+ bonus. I mean people talk about the KyoAni shop (which doesn’t report to Oricon unlike Aniplex+) but I’d guess its similar there – they probably moved way more copies in absolute terms of Free than Tamako, but a higher percentage of Tamako’s sales may have come from the shop.

So I’m sure Aniplex+ accounts for some of the difference, but for it to come anywhere near to explaining this level of underestimation would require some really unexpected buying patterns. Like, Nisekoi would have to have sold almost as much there as Monogatari Second v1 did. They’d have to be offering one hell of a bonus.

It’s still all sorts of mysterious.

  6. Dropped says:

So considering recent developments, KLK 10k average got a lot more likely?

    • something says:

Hm, possible, but still a long-ish shot.

The final episode did push all the volumes high into the top 100. If that translates to a big boost (say at least 1k per volume) then yeah it’s got a chance.

But its current average is 10,105, figure 10.4k once v3 finishes ranking. There are still six volumes left – even very small drops from one volume to the next will put it under 10k most likely.

Final volume does have an OVA, which may boost sales. If it’s not too far below 10k after v8, v9 may do the trick (assuming the final ep boost didn’t already).

  7. something says:

Full sales data is now out. God that took forever this week, so many interruptions and so many releases.

The threshold is the highest BD100 threshold ever (I think, I’d have to double-check).

Which means nowhere near Sakura Trick ranking again =( At least Mikakunin, Chuu2, and Saki ranked.

Other rankings and stuff to follow tonight.

    • hpulley says:

I could have told you about Miss Monochrome! Got that last week. Nice pair of volumes. The cute covers and cases make up for the fact that otherwise they could easily have fit it all on one BD and one CD instead of two and two. Black and White makes perfect sense for it.

Mikakunin quietly becomes #1 until Hoozuki comes out.

UMD and WA2 dropping now unfortunately.

Makenki 2 shows even with a silly season of OVAs essentially it can stroll over 3K.

WUG v1 makes the line and should go over 3K but sadly it shall drop. Wake up girls, it’s a harsh biz.

  8. something says:

Oops, missed adding comments for WUG, just fixed that.

  9. AnimePhoenix says:

Good to see Noragami above the 5k mark I initially thought it wouldn’t reach. Here’s hoping for a great week 2!

Poor YowaPeda on BD….because of that insane threshold, it didn’t rank. I’m sure it did another 600 copies. Bah!

  10. Anonymous says:

So, even after accounting for the fact that Rebellion is slightly cheaper than the first two movies’ double pack, what sort of numbers are we looking at that would be a big increase?

    • something says:

Hard to say but I was setting my expectations at 150k opening week. K-ON! did 140k opening week and unless the 40k DVDs in that K-ON! number represent the large mainstream/family audience Madoka perhaps lacks, I have to imagine Madoka sells more. The final estimate on Stalker for Madoka was almost spot on 100k but it just has to be selling more than that. A couple weird things with the release and timing pushed its Stalker estimate down a fair bit.

On the other hand, the RE BD is ranking about on par with Kill La Kill in the first two days this week, which means it may not be all that underestimated. If this applies to the LE as well (I don’t think it does), we could be looking at more like 115-125k.

So I dunno, maybe it’ll sell a lot less than I’m guessing/hoping… but even worst case scenario, it should blow past the total lifetime sales of the Movie 1-2 bundle in just its first week.

Nice to see Mikakunin do well for its first volume. Bracing for the impending Vol. 2 drop, of course, but no reason not to enjoy this bit of success for now.

Poor Inari Konkon, though. I guess not even mass advertising around the actual Fushimi Inari shrine helped it much. (Not that I expected it to.) Hopefully it did its job of pushing manga sales, I guess…

You have a bug in BD listing: ,b>Noragami v1 instead of Noragami v1

Yeah, I’m going to skim through the whole post, I did it while trying to juggle half a dozen things at work (usually a bad idea!). Will fix that, thanks.

Those WUG sales. Amazing, it managed to avoid being a total flop! In fact, those sales are pretty decent: if anything, they’re better than any Tokyo Ravens release. Yamakan found a way! Sure its average will go down… but it’s doing better than I expected.

This entire season is basically a flop. It very much looks like nothing will avg greater than 7000 if that.

At this point, the best they can hope for is the anime drives enough fans to the actual idol group. Have to say, the girls are actually pretty cute irl. I like how they are rough around the edges just like how it’s in the anime. I wish them all the luck.

I bought the +DVD editions of the WUG OP and ED CDs as I usually do and I’m glad I did. The non credit OP and ED animations are great but the live action music videos are even better. Really show what the girls can do.

The instructional dance bonus videos of the girls on the Blurays are good too. Those girls can dance!

I also enjoy their rough edges.

Crowded space though. I too wish then luck and will continue to support them.

At least Noragami reached 5k yay! Now I’m looking forward to Madoka and Hozuki no Reitetsu’s sale (there’s like 8 versions of this XD)
