2014 Winter Vol 1 Rankings
Please note: Volume 1 sales are not the best, or even a particularly good, way to evaluate a series’ performance. Sometimes one of two formats doesn’t rank in volume 1, but ranks in a later volume. Often times volume 1 sales are inflated with bonuses like event tickets or bundled manga, etc. Always, always use the average sales when evaluating anime, not volume 1 sales. I only provide these because it takes many months before we have a final average and people like to be able to ballpark a season early on. Just be intelligent about it!

Notes
Sales number includes includes estimates of DVDs based on >100 ranking lists or other sources. Generally only included if believed accurate within 100 copies.
Partial Ranking means a release came out on more than one video format, but only one of the two ranked.
Large Vol. 2 Drop? designates any titles that dropped by 30% or more from Vol. 1 to Vol. 2. This is used to indicate that you should take caution in evaluating the success of the show purely on the first volume’s sales.
Season-specific notes
Onee-chan ga Kita released in a single collection on BD on March 22nd, but the DVD version didn’t come out until a week and a half later on April 2nd, for some reason.
Go! Go! 575 was a very short series released as an extra in the soundtrack collection.
Vol. 1 Unranked, Later Vol. Ranked

To Aru Hikuushi e no Koiuta finally solicited, single DVD and BD box in late July… damn that’s a long time off.
I notice Buddycom has 2 version of BD, limited edition and regular edition both with different price…but only limited edition that made it to the rank, because the regular edition surely sold under threshold, doesn’t that make it partially rank
Regular editions almost never rank, to the point where nobody tracks their preorder rankings or even pays attention to their existence so it’s not surprising it didn’t rank.
The only times REs tend to rank are:
1. Movies
2. LE is extremely understocked early on and people have to buy the RE in desperation
3. REs reissued later after LEs go out of stock
4. LE version is far, far more expensive with some crazy bonuses and too expensive for some people to buy
But you’re talking maybe 1 TV series in 50 (or maybe 75 or 100) or so that’ll see REs rank.
well, i notice some other titles have DVD RE, and from stalker data seem RE only sold like maybe as big as 300 ?
to think about it and also how threshold sometime quite big…that sales number that we knew definitely not really accurate for exactly how many a title sold, especially that for sure there are like maybe copies from RE and under threshold that we can’t track…
There are many reasons why Oricon numbers don’t convey the full extent of sales (see the Sales FAQ https://www.someanithing.com/?page_id=104 or a much more detailed discussion of this, especially section 3; also check out this https://www.someanithing.com/?p=167) but REs are one of the smallest concerns. It’s not just that a normal RE version is just missing a 300-copy threshold or whatever… it’s more likely that they aren’t even selling 30 copies, really. People simply do not buy REs under normal circumstances, they are this weird class of products that are not actually intended/expected to be bought for your average late night anime. A lot of series don’t even do RE versions these days.
Note that there’s a critical difference between “BD is LE, DVD is RE” and “There’s two versions on one format, one LE and one RE”. The comments about REs never ranking is only intended to apply to cases where you have more than one BD version and/or more than one DVD version, with one being a more expensive LE and the other being a slightly cheaper RE with less extras.
In cases where there’s just one version on DVD, whether it’s “RE” or not is less important than the fact that it’s a different video format. Some people will still buy it on DVD because they don’t have BD players, or don’t care about BD quality, not because they wanted the “RE”.
