Leak sources:
https://rio2016.5ch.net/test/read.cgi/anime4vip/1545584040/520 Note the clarification that the second SSSS entry is indeed also Gridman; apparently the Chara-ani exclusive is being listed separately again, like we saw for the Kase-san OVA recently. That’s rather annoying.

Fall update:
Zombieland Saga v1 sells 12,640 as a BD-only release. Event ticket.

Gridman v1 sells 8079/415, total 8,494. Event ticket. I guess Pony Canyon’s canime.jp exclusives being counted as separate entries on Oricon is just a thing now, because it happened with Kase-san too. But it seems like it’s only going to happen to some Pony Canyon releases? Or others just sell too little there to even rank.

Seishun Buta v1 sells 5477/873, total 6,350. Event ticket.

Jojo pt5 v1 sells 4117/643, total 4,760. Event ticket.

Yagakimi v1 sells 2849/252, total 3,101. Event ticket.

Release the Spyce v1 sells 1326/172, total 1,498.

Kishuku Gakkou v1 sells 1,488 as a BD-only release.

Kyuuketsuki-san v1 sells 786/203, total 989. Event ticket.

Tokyo Ghoul:re s2 v1 sells 204/151, total 355. Event ticket.

v1s unranked in either format:
12/19/2018 Ulysses: Jehanne d’Arc to Renkin no Kishi v1
12/21/2018 Lord of Vermilion: Guren no Ou v1

Summer update:
Free s3 v4 sells 4054/1945, total 5,999.

Overlord s3 v3, final volume, sells 4879/938, total 5,817. Series average: 6,682.

Shingeki s3 v2 sells 3430/724, total 4,154.

Yume Oukoku v4 sells 448 DVDs, BDs do not rank.

Past seasons:
Uma Musume v4, final volume, sells 14,283 as a BD-only release. Series average: 15,285.

Steins;Gate 0 v6, final volume, sells 2,366 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 2,684. Down from 16,671 for Steins;Gate.

Gintama Tamashii-hsn v7 sells 1,302 DVDs, BDs do not rank.

Heroaca s3 v6 sells 916 DVDs, BDs do not rank.

Lostorage s2 v3, final volume, sells 269 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 708.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Garupan BD Box sells 12,865. This series is just ridiculous. Its combined original + re-release average sales are now 63,481.
36,286 (2012 original release)
14,330 (2015 singles re-release)
12,865 (2018 TV+OVA BD box)
And that’s not counting the 14,722 from the highlights disc, since it’s only a partial version of the show.

Strike the Blood III OVA v1 sells 7328/848, total 8,176. The longevity that Strike the Blood has is so unusual. It’s on its third OVA series now (aka, 15th released volume) and v1wk1 sold only 50 units less than v1wk1 of the second OVA, and all of the OVAs are higher than the original TV series. Multiple OVA series releases over a period of years makes this feel more like a time traveler from the 90s than a modern show.

Horizon S1-2 BD Box sells 6,213. Clears 6k for a ¥38k box released six years after the second season for a series that was already BD only (so no DVD upgrades counted in here) and we still can’t get a s3. Cruel.

One Punch Man Box sells 1821/480, total 2,301.

Flying Witch BD Box sells 1,563. Decent for a 3.5k series.

Danmachi BD Box sells 1,271. This is the second release, first box sold 3,148.

Sword Oratoria BD Box sells 1,234.

Mog Psycho 100 BD Box sells 403.
Recap disc sells 200 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Saikin, Imouto BD Box sells 226.

Juuni Taisen BD Box sells 139.

  1. Tiago says:

Not too bad for Seishun Buta, my 2nd fav of the year. Hyped for the last episode and the movie.

Nice to see danmachi selling some more, looking forward to the movie and S2.

  2. Luchael says:

Hmm, it seems that most of the new volumes sold less than they should. Is it possible that we’ll get somewhat better wk2 than usual?

    • something says:

Some sold more and some sold less than the estimates. But keep in mind, estimates from sites like pripri are just that, estimates. We only see really large wk2s when wk1 was affected by a serious shortage of stock.

Of course, these days it’s hard to get wk2+ data for releases at all considering we don’t get full lists anymore.

  3. Becky says:

I’ve been following the series data on Pripri and it appears there was another version of Bloom Into You that’s not listed here that sold about 1.3-1.4k sales. What’s happened?

    • something says:

You’re probably looking at there being one labeled 【Amazon.co.jp限定】 and one without. The former is just the listing for the Amazon exclusive. But when Oricon reports the data, they combine all store exclusives with the normal version and report it in one number. So there shouldn’t be anything missing – it was just overestimated, unsurprisingly.

  4. Hotii says:

I’m actually a bit upset Spyce sold almost the double of the vampires, considering it wasn’t even half as good even if both shows were very gay.

  5. derp says:

wtf Horizon is getting the same treatment as index before season 3 was announced and there’s so much content to adapt too! why not just milk the franchise already!
already reached over 25k+ on both seasons!!!!

Also Danmachi breaking 10k soon is amazing! and sword oratoria getting enough sales for another season!

Overlord s3 does amazing and hopefully we get another 2-cour season!

Seishun Buta v1 sells 5477/873, total 6,350 avg
Zombieland Saga v1 sells 12,640 as a BD-only release avg (sasuga cygames. i love them! every show by them has done amazingly well and thanks to mobile game bonuses too. UmaMusume is awesome!)
    Gridman v1 sells 8079/415, total 8,494 avg
    Jojo pt5 v1 sells 4117/643, total 4,760 avg
Yagakimi v1 sells 2849/252, total 3,101 avg (its not too bad but could go up to 5k which is enough for another season!)

Steins;Gate 0 v6, final volume, sells 2,366 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 2,684. Down from 16,671 for Steins;Gate.
This should have sold way more because they fixed alot of stuff in the BD’s. even the small details.

OPM and MP 100 getting some good rereleases too!

Strike the Blood III OVA v1 sells 7328/848, total 8,176
    This is just amazing Senpai!

Girls und Panzer doing amazing as always. funny how long Granblue fantasy stayed so long too.

Kyonani seems to always sell over 7k. i hope Free’s rerelease does better and it gets them more money to make more awesome shows!

  6. derp says:

btw when will we get to see the yearly sales?

    • something says:

They come out in bits and pieces and we usually have it all by late January. Assuming we still get the leaks this year.

  7. KurumiNightmare . says:

So much stuff to comment on but overall iam quite happy probably biggest surprised is Zombieland i mean i know its highly popular and all but wasnt expecting it to hit 10k+ kinda expecting it the other was around with the bunny girl.
Overall for all prety good sales, specialy the boxes are doing well i wish we could get a 2nd season for Flying witch such a great comfy watch.

  8. Mami Kawada Lover says:

    >Release the Spyce v1 sells 1326/172, total 1,498.
Ouch. This is kind of sad when you think about it as it seemed the people behind it were pushing it for a while.

  9. Mami Kawada Lover says:

    Wait: where’s Juliet and Tonari?

  10. HoHo says:

I’m so happy with ZLS. I hope that its average sale is at least the same as Uma Musume.

  11. Mami Kawada Lover says:

    >Kishuku Gakkou v1 sells 1,488 as a BD-only release.
Really disappointed with this. This was my second favorite show of the season, with a likable cast and very cute character interactions. That and the anime only really adapted the first few arcs of the manga when there was so much more to it. At least the manga is now selling better, but this really deserved better.

    >Kyuuketsuki-san v1 sells 786/203, total 989. Event ticket.
Shame. The characters were really cute and kind of likable, but let’s face it, there’s not really too much substance to it other than “Akari is obsessed with Sophie”. At least Sophie herself was likable.

  12. Screens says:

StB is such an interesting case. Is its success just an anomaly or is there actual merit to series turning towards the OVA release format instead?

  13. lune says:

I was looking out for the flying witch BD box to see if there’s any hope for a second season. The numbers don’t look bad but now that the araoto anime is announced I feel like the chances for a second season pretty much disappeared.

    • something says:

Maybe I’m missing something, but what’s the connection between the two? They aren’t the same mangaka, director, studio, or even genre from what I can tell by looking Araoto up just now. The only thing they share is being from the same magazine…?

      • lune says:

They’re both in bessatsu yeah, and the magazine’s main selling point is series full of brutal stuff and gore. So having two lighthearted and funny anime adaptations from the same place in quick succession seems unlikely.

        • something says:

I’m looking at the wiki article and there’s been more non-violent adaptations from this magazine than violent or otherwise disturbing series.

Darker stuff: Shingeki no Kyojin, Aku no Hana
Lighter stuff: Flying Witch, Aho-Girl, Sankarea, Joshiraku, Ixion Saga. Also add Shingeki no Kyojin Chuugakkou maybe? And it sounds like Araburu Kisetsu no Otome-domo yo goes here? As for UQ Holder!, I’m assuming it’s kind of a magcal harem sort of thing like Negima.

So whatever the content of the actual magazine, the decisions on what to adapt seem to lean heavily into the less violent material. Unless this list from Wikipedia is just super out of date or incomplete I guess.

  14. David says:

Only 403 copies for Mob re-release and 200 copies for Reigen special… That’s so sad. I hope the number can be a little bit higher. That means the 2nd season will follow the trend and sold even less than 4k8-5k average copies for S1. T_T

    • KurumiNightmare . says:

Mob was never really that popular i personnaly got bit surprised it even got a sequel but else ye i think 2-3k max are realistic numbers for the sequel but well ye u never know so lets wait see how it does.

      • something says:

Mob is certainly more popular than most shows (granted, that is a low bar so it depends on your expectations), and my guess is it’s the kind of show that did very well internationally. Lower BD sales in s2 won’t necessarily mean it’s unpopular.

        • KurumiNightmare . says:

I meant as in when you compare it to other shounen stuff recently and direct comparassion to other ONEs work with OPM which is far more known. While for Mob you havent really heard much of it after the anime ended thats why in my eyes it didnt made much of a buzz. And since you mentioned internationly i kinda really wonder at times how much it affects certain anime since some time ago we kinda all knew that jpn didnt really care much about the rest of the world opinion. Though i assume that is slowly but surely changing thanks to lots of outside streaming and therefore reachin out to more potencial buyers for other merchandise of everyones favourite show.

          • something says:

The idea that Japan doesn’t care about international markets is definitely out of date. International markets account for a large percentage of the anime industry’s overall revenue.

The latest report from the Association of Japanese Animators can be found in the 2018 PDF here: http://aja.gr.jp/jigyou/chousa/sangyo_toukei. There’s an English summary of the reports but it’s only up to 2017 report (for 2016).

The relevant charts are on page 4. The first chart is described in their English version as “market size based on estimated revenues in animation and animation‐related product markets”. Here international is nearly half of all revenue, or ¥995 billion out of ¥2153 billion.
The second chart is “market size based on the estimated revenues of all domestic commercial animation studios”, so much more narrowly defined. Here the number is ¥52 billion out of ¥241 billion, or 21%, still a huge chunk.

Note that I’m not saying a show being popular internationally makes it popular within Japan. But in terms of commercial viability of the production, being big outside of Japan (especially North America and China) can matter a lot.

            • KurumiNightmare says:

Thoose are quite interesting facts, really appreciate your effort for providing valid info that you can also back up. And ye i agree on your last sentence since as i notice our taste in anime can sometimes be quite different, so some gonna be popular only outside of jpn. I truly hope that if shows do well outside of jpn they get their chance of some more seasons due it dispite perhaps poor acceptance in jpn. Looking forward to see how things turn in the near future cuz as we see directly from your facts international revenue keeps getting bigger and bigger each year. Perhaps also the rivarly between CR and Funi once again gonna force em to spend more money for streamin rights and ofc we cant forget netflix who throws out insane amount of money aswell so yeh it will indeed be interesting :)

  15. Flushme says:

Will the Garupan sales be added to the overall series sales list?

    • something says:

It’ll be in the re-releases column of the quick view and the re-releases page itself the next time I update all the rankings. Which will be… at some point.
