Summer update:
Free s3 v1 sells 5022/2455, total 7,477. This was the season’s most obvious shot at a 10k seller but that looks unlikely now. We’ll have to see if High Score Girl really sells as well as it’s estimated, otherwise this is a no-10k season.
Yuragi-sou v1 sells 2253/792, total 3,045.

>Yuragi-sou v1 sells 2253/792, total 3,045
Did somewhat better than I thought it would, though if we go by averages, it won’t be spectacular. I guess in the series’ case, the manga boost would be a more important factor, but considering they seem to be going all-out with this series at the moment (it’s even getting a game soon), I guess this is not surprising.
>Isekai Maou v1 sells 1,381 as a BD-only release.
This makes me rather sad, the characters were fun and the show was fun especially near the end. Really weird not to see it doing well.
>Island v1 sells 376 as a BD-only release.
>Chio-chan no Tsuugakuro v1 (unranked)
>Juushinki Pandora v1 (unranked)
Ouch.
>Lost Song sells 813. One-shot BD-only release, so Series average: 813.
Honestly this did way better than I thought it would. Considering how the show wasn’t really well-promoted in Japan, how relatively inaccessible it is, and how expensive the box is, I’m surprised it even managed to rank at all. It even did better than Island which is a more established name with a more established company behind it, and also had Yukari Tamura in one of the main roles. Something tells me that had Lost Song been released as individual volumes and/or was cheaper, a volume 1 would have sold at least 1,000.
>Tada-kun v4, final volume, sells 347 DVDs, BDs do not rank. Series average: 1,148.
Really weird to see just how much the sales dropped towards the end.
Re: Lost Song, it’s recently confirmed to be getting a sequel project, so it presumably has done atleast well enough on Netflix streaming or whatever other revenue sources for that to happen.
Additional leaks, so some v1wk1 updates:
Asobi Asobase = 1,276
Harukana Receive = 1,267
Chio-chan no Tsuugakuro = 235
Ongaku Shoujo = 176
Juushinki Pandora = 155
Free! was obviously going to have a drop as its been out for a while now but this seems like a steep drop…? What were the estimates for this looking like if you know?
It still beat the Mingzuozhibi estimates (5,817) by a fair but because it’s still popular at Animate. Part of the drop it is that there’s no event ticket, though this is still a big drop for a non-ticket volume.
But add onto that the general decline in physical media sales, the number of sequels that have seen huge drops of late, the fact that this is now the third season of the franchise, and of course the four years that have passed since season two. Considering all hat, I guess this kind of drop isn’t too unexpected, even if it is still harsh.
I was hoping that Free would be able to sell at least 10k or 15k on average, but that obviously was too much.
Why do Japan hate comedy anime like Asobi Asobase…………
Japan likes comedy anime, just most of them tend to be shorts aimed at a mainstream audience.
And technically Asoaso is selling around what the median anime sells nowadays so this is kinda average, sad as that is to say.
Those Yuragi and DxD sales.Kind of shows that what future holds for Ecchi Harem series.
Will be curious to see what Free! does in the overal year count, as it seems theres no real rush to go out and buy it day 1, though it seems to have done well (2nd or 3rd best selling of the season?)
Since it is getting something in 2020, the franchise must still be pulling big numbers in revenue making aspects that we do not have eyes to see, I guess.
Full Metal Panic IV
do you think it is selling enough?
what is needed for a sequel?
I found some BOX which had inside all the 3 BD of the series e they would be shipped right after the release of the last BD (3). That’s why some numbers we read here (for BD 1 ed 2) may be understimated, am I wrong?
“do you think it is selling enough? what is needed for a sequel?”
Impossible to say. Whether a sequel gets made depends on many factors, and video disc sales are only one of those factors (and often not the most important).
“I found some BOX which had inside all the 3 BD of the series e they would be shipped right after the release of the last BD (3).”
Where’s you see this? Maybe there’s some kind of retailer exclusive with a box shopping after the last volume?
“That’s why some numbers we read here (for BD 1 ed 2) may be understimated, am I wrong?”
While in theory shows can receive a small boost when the last volume comes out, if certain retailers don’t ship until all are in stock, in practice this is extremely rare. About the only time we’ve noticed it happen in a noteworthy way is with a small handful of Aniplex shows. Aniplex’s shop (Aniplex+) sometimes holds some or all volumes until later and ships together. But it’s very uncommon.
Actually I can’t find it anymore. Before the release of the last BD, there was this box containing all the 3 BD. I don’t know if it would have been shipped right after each release (once at time) or all after the last one. The site was “CDJapan” :)
Thank you and just one more question: what are those factors that you mentioned above?
See this reply for something that indirectly answers your question: http://www.someanithing.com/9878/comment-page-1#comment-115739
Basically, it’s just complicated. Anime doesn’t make all or even most of its money from BDs, and the fact that multiple companies fund each anime means that “success” is measured per company involved in a show’s funding, not so much per show as a whole.
What I conclude about the sales of FMPIV :
On a basis of the first week’s sales for each BD BOX, the total of copies sold is approx. 11,000, on a average price of ¥12,000 yen so a global amount of ¥132,000,000 = at least more of less $1,150,000 (€ 1.000.000) earned. I can’t tell either if it’s enough or not.
But what’s more important is that FMP will have a main stage event at Festival 2018, held the next 21th october in Tokyo. For reminder, FMPIV was announced at Festival Fantasia 2015, so everyone is hoping that season 5 will be announced in 2 weeks.
http://www.fujimishobo.co.jp/sp/fantasia2018/mainstage.php
FMP IV made ¥144,640,000 in ranked volumes by our count. If we roughly estimate v2-3 DVD sales we can round that up to ~¥150m. The cost to produce an anime is variable, and a lot of the industry-quoted numbers we have are years old. But I think some of the more recent numbers I’ve seen hover around ¥20m per episode. That means ¥150m would fund 7-8 episodes, or a bit over half a cour.
But it’s actually a lot more complicated than this. The companies that funded FMP IV did not actually receive ¥150m. Retailers and others take a cut of that revenue, and the committee is left with, very roughly, about 55%. This means that the ¥150m we calculated translates to about ¥82.5m. That might fund about 4 episodes and change.
Except there are yet more complications. The one that works in the show’s favor is that Oricon reports are only estimates, and they are always lower than the actual number of volumes sold. We don’t get shipment numbers direct from publishers/distributors very often, unfortunately, so we don’t know how many units FMP IV actually moved. At most, Oricon might represent like 80% of actual sales, so we should expect the real sales came to at least ¥100m, so maybe 5 episodes worth at the guesstimate of ¥20m an episode.
But the biggest complication of all is the one that makes determining the revenue of a franchise by estimating disc sales moot. Anime isn’t funded by one company, it’s funded by a committee of multiple companies. In FMP IV’s case:
Kadokawa Shoten
Bandai Namco Entertainment
Bandai Namco Arts (Lantis)
Xebec
Klockworx
AT-X
Hakuhodo
Memory Tech
Tokyo MX
In roughly that order of importance, in terms of money invested. Each of those companies is making money in its own way, and for some the BD sales are of little or no relevance. Now FMP’s case is a little simpler, because Kadokawa leads the committee and handles both the video discs and novels for FMP. Kadokawa also managed the sale of the license to Crunchyroll (and presumably other international streaming sites), and that’s a lucrative source of income these days. So whatever makes Kadokawa happy (and to a lesser extent Bandai) is likely to be good for FMP. But every one of those companies has a stake in it, and it’s possible for an anime to be profitable for one committee member and a loss for another. An an anime can be simultaneously a failure and a success.
The tl;dr is that we just don’t have a way of determining for sure how FMP IV did, and definitely can’t do so with disc sales alone.
Something, did you watch the first episode of Yagate Kimi ni Naru yet? Because it’s amazing and looking at the Amazon ranking, I think you will be happy too. It shot up to the top 50 in the anime chart. Granted, it’s still the first day but this might be the first yuri to breakout.
Remember to track sales across all discs, not just the anime charts. It’s 131 overall now, which granted is still good, but not quite top 50 good.
Anyway no I’ve not seen it yet. Just got back from work for one, but also, I don’t watch anything released by HiDive. I’m waiting to see what kind of fansubs it gets, if any. If the subbing situation is particularly dire I might just read the manga – we’ll see.
It’s sad to see Harukana can’t even get at least 3k but it’s still okay in comparison to Happy Sugar Life which was determined to suffer from the early beginning since shows similar to that doesn’t sell nowadays. At least above 1k seems good enough for either Asobi Asobase and Yama no Susume, which I gotta ask whether if that’s good enough for Yama or it’s heading into a downward spiral. It’s such a brilliant, cute show that I don’t wanna see it finished before any ship managed to sail. I’m hoping Shoujo Kageki didn’t flop so much because that’s a legitimately good show, while Ongaku Shoujo was set for failure from the start since it was animated by a cheap, subpar studio and it completely ignored the event of the original OVA, which ruined the impression of fans for said OVA. It seems SAO GGO is doing pretty good and that’s nice to know,
There’s quite a few yurirific anime shows this season and I’m hoping for the best.
I guess, to be fair, it should be noted that only about 1 in 4 shows manages to average 3k these days. So 3k is actually a relatively high bar to clear… as depressing as that is to type out! A higher percentage hit 3k in v1 (it was 1 in 3 last year) but that’s still a minority.
As for Yama no Susume, I dunno. It’s the same amount the Omoide Present OVA sold, so it was unlikely this would do any better. What we don’t know is how much disc sales mattered to Yamasusu getting a s3. My guess is they weren’t the main factor. There was an interview where the unusually high sales of s1 were mentioned (it had a re-release which did quite well for a short) but s2 only averaged 3.3k so while that’s definitely not bad, it’s not tearing up the charts. It does look like s3 will drop by about half of that though, so if disc sales are a big part of what they’re looking for, maybe it’s not a great sign for Aoi’s chances of finally getting her Fuji rematch. Who knows though, there’s definitely more going on with this franchise that gave the committee confidence to give it a third season than just BD numbers.
