The lack of full rankings was bad for last week and is going to be a lot worse for this week, if this problem continues. This especially sucks for shows that release with such timing that their wk2s are during big weeks. For example, this screws the latest Yurucamp and Yorimoi out of wk2+ data, which is a pretty big deal! If we’re really going to stay limited to preliminary lists… then I’m really not sure how much longer tracking sales if going to be worth it.

Spring update:
Amanchu s2 v1 sells 2,325. BD-only release. 28.9% overestimated. Pretty close to the 2,556 of s1v1.

Winter update:
Grancrest v1 sells 416/156, total 572. 17.0%/48.7% overestimated. At least we still get partial leaks (BD/DVD)from beyond the top 20, but that’ll only help for first weeks of v1s and boxes.

Devilman Crybaby sells 2,637. One-shot BD-only release. 11.6% overestimated. Series average: 2,637.

Darlifra v2 sells 4498/572 total 5,070.

CCS Clear Card v2 sells 3213/963, total 4,176.

Ryuuoushi v3 sells 1,829. BD-only release.

Slow Start v3 sells 1,351 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Koizumi-san v2, final volume, sells 932 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 1,070.

Nanatai s3 v2 sells 698 DVDs, BDs in the full list (if we get one).

Juuni Taisen v6, final volume, sells 518 DVDs, BDs in the full list (if we get one). Series average: 1,334.

Hakata Ramens v2 sells 306 DVDs, BDs in the full list (if we get one).

Hoshin Engi v3 sells 304 DVDs, BDs in the full list (if we get one).

Idolish7 v4 adds 2150/1521, total 15,262.

Zoku Tourabu v3 adds 291 DVDs, total 7,370.

Past seasons:
Imas SideM v6 sells 8341/2241, total 10,582.

Yuyuyu s2 v2, final volume, sells 7,853. This is the Yuusha part, and it’s much higher than the 4,774 that the Washio Sumi sold wk1. But the latter was sold at theaters with each of the three films that the TV series covered in its first half, and those numbers aren’t covered by Oricon, so that’s not surprising. The two can’t be directly compared. Also Yuusha part should be more front-loaded (and will look especially so if we continue not to get full sales lists…), though even then this is already above the 6,592 that Washio Sumi sold in total. Series average: 7,223.

Mahoyome v3 sells 5,504. BD-only release.

Blend S v6, final volume, sells 2770/1360, total 4,130. Event ticket in this disc boosted sales. Series average: 3,112.

Gintama Porori v5, final volume, sells 1536/1480, total 3,016. Series average: 3,151.

Just Because v6, final volume, sells 1750/245, total 1,995. Series average: 1,947.

Granblue v2 adds 265 DVDs, total 50,659.
v4 adds 245 DVDs, total 46,545.
v5 adds 269 DVDs, total 45,699.
v6 adds 290 DVDs, total 52,422.
v7, final volume, adds 325 DVDs, total 59,131. Series average: 52,163. That puts it over 52k, over Shingeki, and within a week, two at most, of passing Fate/Zero and becoming #10 since 2000.

LL Sunshine s2 v6 adds 6791, total 33,618.

Osomatsu-san s2 v6 adds 855 DVDs, total 7,001.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Gochiusa Dear My Sister OVA sells 15372/3423, total 18,795. Event ticket, but still, that’s already well above the 16,206 for s2v1, the previous best-selling volume which also had an event ticket. While its tail is going to get chopped off short if the full lists don’t come back, we’re looking at 20k here.

Mentioned in the post but worth reiterating:

The lack of full rankings was bad for last week and is going to be a lot worse for this week, if this problem continues. This especially sucks for shows that release with such timing that their wk2s are during big weeks. For example, this screws the latest Yurucamp and Yorimoi out of wk2+ data, which is a pretty big deal! 2. Tuna says:

Wow disc publisher of Granblue must be incredibly happy. hopefully these weeks of selling have actually been new shipments to stores and now just lingering copies of the first shipment.

    • something something says:

After a year, for some of these volumes? Yeah they’re definitely sending out new shipments, probably pretty regularly. They wouldn’t have over-shipped to such a gargantuan degree initially.

    >Koizumi-san v2, final volume, sells 932 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 1,070.
    >Hakata Ramens v2 sells 306 DVDs, BDs in the full list (if we get one).
Weird to see both shows with Ramen in their title not doing so well.

  4. joao victor says:

    Takagi-san v3?

    • something something says:

Came out last week. If you’re looking for wk2 numbers, unfortunately that’s not going to happen with a 932 threshold. We just have to hope the full rankings come out this week, but they haven’t for the past three weeks…

  5. Flushme says:

Any idea on why the full rankings have been missing lately?

    • something something says:

No idea. It’s possible we’ve always been relying on one person and they no longer have access.

  6. Anonymous says:

What’s Cyborg 009 vs Devilman’s average again? You didn’t include it in the series list. I want to compare it to Crybaby’s. Also, I thought Crybaby had a special edition?

    • something something says:

Cyborg 009 vs Devilman was an OVA so I wouldn’t have tracked it. But since it was an OVA, it’s not really a fair comparison, but it averaged 9,997. 9782 for the box version + 215 for the singles version released at the same time.

As for Crybaby, it just had the one BD box release. Amazon had an exclusive version, which if why you would have seen two listings on Stalker, but store exclusives are always reported together with the general release, so those numbers are included in this report.

      • Anonymous says:

Wait, 9997? That’s rather high. I thought it would be something like 2500-3000 based on the previous numbers you posted. Thanks though.

  7. Mac says:

Do you think availability on Netflix affects sales for series at all? I know that in North America, Netflix Original shows have a history of selling far fewer DVD/BDs than other series, probably since it’s easy for people to just watch them again on Netflix if they want to go back to them. Would it be the same in Japan for shows like Devilman Crybaby and Violet Evergarden?

    • something something says:

It probably decreases disc sales, because it inherently limits the number of people who can watch the show. There are only about two million Netflix accounts in Japan, and only a portion of those are going to watch anime. That’s a much more restricted pool of viewers than typical TV/streaming broadcasts.

But there’s no way to know for sure. There aren’t many shows exclusive to Netflix in Japan, and we have no way of knowing what they would sell with a normal broadcast.

As for Evergarden, it wasn’t a Netflix exclusive in Japan. It aired on Tokyo MX, ABC TV, TV Aichi, BS11 Digital, and Hokkaido TV (plus probably a number of streaming services?).
