2018 Total Average Sales, TV/ONA

Note: “0” does not mean exactly 0, it means that no volumes ranked in any format. 0 is used to improve results when sorting.
Note: If BD + DVD percentages do not add up to 100%, it’s because the show had an entry on the “Per-series” Oricon rankings in the mid-year or full-year lists. Those discs can only be counted towards the series as a whole, not a specific volume or format.

  1. Avatar soul says:

Why the number of total sales is different from the number of DVD sales + BD sales, for example yurucamp and yorimoi?

    • something something says:

In the mid-year and end-of-year rankings, there’s a chart that tracks the series that have sold the most discs. For example, check the last chart in this post. The thing about this data is that it can’t be tied to specific volumes, it’s just the total across all volumes in a particular time period. So for example:

      • Show X is 5 volumes
      • Those 5 volumes have combined sales of 50,000 (10,000 DVD + 40,000 BD) based on the (incomplete or otherwise limited) weekly reports and other sources we have available, so a 10,000 average.
      • The per-series ranking comes along and says “Show x sold 55,000 units” across all 5 volumes, so a 11,000 average.
      • We therefore know that there’s 5,000 extra discs sold that we need to account for in the average, but we have no idea how many of those come from each volume, or what the breakdown is between DVD and BD.

So this means my charts which list average split by DVD and BD won’t always sum up to the actual average.

  2. Avatar Arisa says:

Wait, does that 0 implying that Dorei-ku didn’t even sell a single unit of its BD? Well, who cares. It’s a legit terrible anime.

    • something something says:

At the top of the page it notes: “Note: “0” does not mean exactly 0, it means that no volumes ranked in any format. 0 is used to improve results when sorting.”

  3. Avatar Chad says:

Only four anime sold more than 10,000 copies per volume, and none sold more than 22,000 per volume.

    • something something says:

Zombieland Saga will be the fifth, and SAO Alicization technically has a shot (at least for v1), but I do think that’ll be it. Gridman ended up falling short going by v1wk1 numbers though some kind of late entry based on mid-year rankings next year isn’t completely impossible.

      • Avatar Chad O'Dell says:

Still only 5 anime sold more than 10,000 discs per volume, compared to 9 anime in 2017.
And only 19 anime sold more than 5,000 discs per volume, compared to 24 anime in 2017.

  4. Avatar Chad O'Dell says:

Anime sales are in serious trouble, considering that most late-night anime need to sell at least 5,000 copies per volume to break even.

    • something something says:

Not to pick on you, but I’m a little disappointed that after running this site for five years, we still see comments like this.

I don’t know where you heard that “needs to sell 5,000 copies to break even”, but that’s definitely not true at all. If anime needed to average 5k (which I assume is what you mean), the industry would have collapsed and died years ago. Across the 1,852 TV series I have data for, less than 1 in 4 have averaged 5k.

And anime is funded by committee, meaning a bunch of different companies all pool together funds for production. There are a lot of different ways they make money, not just DVD/BDs. The anime industry as a whole is making more money than it ever has before, particularly with the rise of streaming. DVD/BD sales are a rapidly shrinking portion of that total, to the point of becoming increasingly irrelevant (part of the reason I’m not posting here much anymore).

Think of it this way: saying in 2019 that low physical media sales means the anime is in trouble is like going back a century, looking at the declining ownership of horses, and saying that the transportation industry is in trouble. Physical media is simply becoming obsolete, and is an increasingly less useful indicator of whether an anime is successful or not.

      • Avatar Chad O'Dell says:

I’m sorry for being so pessimistic, but I know the break-even line of 3,000 copies per volume is a myth. I tend to forget anime makes money in ways other than disc sales.

  5. Avatar Some dude says:

How many sales per Vol. are considered “good sales” ?

  6. Avatar Chad O'Dell says:

But it’s cool that MAPPA has another huge hit with “Zombieland Saga”
