Sales are a little high-ish across the board so expect generally lower wk2s next week than may be otherwise expected, at least for some shows.

Summer update:
Symphogear s4 v1 sells 16233/2002, total 18,235. 2.1%/6.4% underestimated. Event ticket. Best v1wk1 of the franchise, by a hair. The event ticket came late in the season, but it certainly did its job. A lot of unknowns and the closeness of this to GX v1wk1 make it impossible to say if it’ll have a better average than GX or not. Could always be more front-loaded.

Pripri v1 sells 5422/215, ttoal 5,637. 10.6%/53.1% overestimated. Not really too overestimated, but I thought it was going to handily beat the estimates given how much of its late boost was after Stalker stopped estimating. We’ll have to see what the long tail and v2+ look like.

New Game s2 v1 sells 3866/558, total 4,424. 9.1% under/7.5% overestimated. Event ticket. While it came in slightly ahead of the estimates, this is still a disappointingly big drop (2k on s1v1wk1) for such an unarguably improved sequel. 4k average is probably the best it can hope for.

Hajimete no Gal v1 sells 1530/472, total 2,002. 4.0%/19.3% overestimated.

Gamers! v1 sells 1180/238, total 1,418. 22.2%/36.0% overestimated. Event ticket.

Vatican v1 sells 813/491, total 1,304. 244.5%/312.6% underestimated. Event ticket. Yes the estimation is hilarious, but very low sales + high price penalty can create such situations.

Netsuzou Trap v1 sells 394 BDs, DVDs do not rank. 28.2% overestimated. Event ticket.

Centaur no Nayami v1 sells 212 as a BD-only release. 37.8% overestmated. As subpar an adaptation as it was, this still doesn’t feel great. I love the source material so much and it’s a shame it didn’t get an anime with more effort. Buy the manga though [JP / EN], please!

Katsugeki Tourabu v3 sells 11,652. That’s… better than v2 event ticket v1, which was already oddly below non-ticket v1. It’s like the event ticket never even existed. For a series that makes so much money on the live component, this is still bewildering.
v2 adds 418 BDs, total 13,924 in wk6, meaning it added 440 in wk4-5.

Saiyuuki Reload Blast v2 sells 2337/1681, total 4,018.

Jigoku Shoujo s4 v2, final volume, sells 910 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 861.

Hitorijime v1 adds 511 DVDs, total 2,148.

Isekai Shokudou v1 adds 398 BDs, total 1,932. Assuming BDs rank at all, this is a big (well, relative to wk1) wk2.

v1s not ranked in either format:
2017/09/29 Jikan no Shihaisha v1

Spring update:
Tsuki ga Kirei sells 5509/451, total 5,960. 6.3%/58.2% underestimated. One-shot box. Event ticket. Half the normal price of a one cour anime, so this ends up being more like a series with a 3-3.5k average but given everything about today’s disc market… could be worse. Came in close to Stalker’s 5.5k penalized estimate, so the high price penalty still holds water. A unpenalized estimate would have been wildly high.

Saekano s2 v3 sells 6330/704, total 7,034.

Eromanga-sensei v4 sells 5691/700, total 6,391.

Natsume s6 v4 sells 3021/2093, total 5,114. Small boost over the other volumes (29% ahead of v3wk1) due to an event ticket.

sin Nanatai v4 sells 1989/499, total 2,488.

Asashic Records v4 sells 1436/437, total 1,873.

Haine v4 sells 666/856, total 1,522.

Sukasuka v4 sells 1,424 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Sword Oratoria v4 sells 1,331 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Hinako Note v3 sells 999 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Busou Shoujo v4 sells 791 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Frame Arms v3 adds 451, total 9,997.

Bahamut s2 v1 adds 719 BDs, total 4,153.

Starmyu s2 v2 adds 462/322, total 3,882.

Past seasons:
Bang Dream v5 sells 3,564. BD-only release.

Demi-chan v7, final volume, sells 1,512 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 2,172. A little inflated since 638 of that is from the one time it ranked on DVD (w/the event ticket).

Rewrite s2 v6, final volume, sells 1,394 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 1,253.

Schoolgirl Strikers v7, final volume, sells 516 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 549.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
SAO Ordinal Scale sells 89056/10126 BDs, 19599/6925 DVDs, total 125,706. All told only 10k below the estimate despite the massive bias towards the exclusive at Amazon. Strong rankings at Animate and elsewhere held it up, when it could have been a massive overestimation otherwise.

Kurobas Last Game sells 17433 BDs, 11693/4462 DVDs, total 33,588.

Zaregoto v8, final volume, sells 10508/1826, total 12,334.
v7 adds 554 BDs, total 14,007. Series average: 16,549.

Eureka Seven BD Box v2 sells 3,257. This is the second round of BD boxes, all told it’s sold almost 9.7k avg in BD boxes and 16,873 in re-releases total against a 9,426 singles average.

Dunbine BD Box v2 sells 2,128.

1st Gundam BD Box sells 1,995. This is the second BD box and millionth total re-release.

A Channel BD Box sells 1,334.

TLR Darkness s2 BD Box sells 780/176, total 956.

ChäoS;Child Movie sells 291 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

  1. Avatar charan says:

Does the blueray sales matter that much when it comes to big box office hit anime movies like SAO movie

  2. Avatar Omnom says:

I feel like PriPri v1 can inch past 6k and and has a slim chance of reaching 7k. Its ranking is still pretty good and I heard it sold out in many stores.
Nothing to comment about Symphogear, I mean they even got a s5 confirmed already… More or less the “feels-good” series that will sell no matter what.

    • Avatar CTJ says:

I hope so! PriPri deserves it. When you say “its ranking is still pretty good”, what ranking are you talking about?

      • something something says:

The current ranking on Amazon Japan. It’s still in the top 50, so it may have a strong wk2. The ranking is good at some other shops too (Animate, Gamers, HMV).

  3. Avatar BlackPoint says:

    10 11 5,422 5,422 1 Princess Principal v1

Really happy to see this selling over 5k in the first week i hope it can maintain the 5k~ average which will be really good for such a original anime and maybe give us some hope for a sequel :)

  4. Avatar Tuna says:

Kind of expected more for Kurobas last game, but I guess everyone was satisfied with their multiple times going to see the movie in theaters, I remember it did really really really well?

  5. Avatar SheeP-kei says:

I’m a little disappointed New Game!! sold significantly worst since like you said, they did a wonderful job with season two. At least Symphogear is still being Symphogear.

  6. Avatar AnimePhoenix says:

    Nice for KuroBasu! <3

  7. Avatar Rafael Maieski says:

    SukaSuka numbers BD numbers please?

    • something something says:

It’ll be in the full list on Thursday on Friday. The preliminary list threshold is quite high and it sells very little, sadly.

  8. Avatar Flushme says:

And Symphogear does it yet again, even though it was only by a small margin this time and the character song CDs didn’t sell as much as previously. But was there ever any series serious before which managed to pull out V1 sales improvements trice?

    • something something says:

I’d wait to see what the volume total is first but given how few shows even make 4 seasons to begin with, probably not.

  9. Avatar ayumi says:

    Something,

I was just looking at the charts on Amazon and Animate and it seems like osomatsu-san is “flopping”. Is it too early to tell, or does it look like it’s going to experience a huuuge drop from season 1? (I think even if it averages 15k, that is a BIG drop). I mean, it’s barely in the Top 100 for anime. It seems the Japanese fujoshi market really moves on to the next big thing really quickly.

    • something something says:

While it’s certainly not a *good* start, it’s much much much too early to say anything useful. Especially with no event ticket announced yet.

I do expect a big drop and did ever since s2 was announced, but I’m not going to make to much of the current rankings yet.

      • Avatar Flushme says:

I’m interested in your opinion on why those drops happen. SNK is a prime example of a huge drop of a previously massive selling series. I’m not convinced the quite long wait caused the drop. And the manga is also still going strong, so the story probably is also not the cause.

        • something something says:

Series that reach that level of popularity rely quite heavily on casual or occasional anime fans (in addition to some percentage of core fans), people who generally don’t buy stuff but heard about this really cool new show that everyone is talking about. And those people often aren’t going to stick around long. Shelling out for BDs once was enough, the second time they’re content to just watch – if that. They’re not the kind of obsessive fans that will continue to buy discs and merch for the same series for years on end. Which is fine, but it certainly makes regaining the enthusiasm from a franchise’s peak extremely difficult.

Shingeki’s case, of course, is still wildly extreme in both its peak and where it bottomed out. I wouldn’t consider it a model for how these things usually go, for sure!

  10. Avatar Danpmss says:

Something, I heard Made in Abyss finally boosted its numbers a bit by the very end.

As I can’t translate from Stalker-nese, what would be the estimates for these points right now?
    *10位/*10位 ◎ (**2,360 pt) [*,*35予約] 17/10/25 メイドインアビス Blu-ray BOX 上巻

    • something something says:

Yes, it got a huge boost from the finale. It’s been in or around the top 10 for six days now. The estimate is wonky as hell at the moment because of the way Stalker’s estimates work. Everything depends on 1) how long this boost lasts and 2) whether the boost is excessively Amazon-biased.

Right now the estimate is 7,627 with the high price penalty applied, or 12,716 without the penalty. But but but but, that will drop very quickly as soon as it drops away from around the #10 ranking.

Unless… it doesn’t. If it holds its current position for three more weeks, then that really will be the final Stalker estimate. However, it’s unlikely to hold the boost for much longer. Of course, crazier things have happened. In any case, check back in about two weeks!

  11. Avatar charan says:

could you explain me how you calculated gross revenue in series data

    • something something says:

It’s just a multiplication of MSRP (without tax) * #discs sold for each format of each volume.

Let’s take a simple example, say a show is 3 volumes, the DVDs are ¥5500, and the BDs are ¥6500.
      Say it sells:
      v1 – 500 DVDs, 1000 BDs = (5500 * 500) + (6500 * 1000) = ¥9,250,000
      v2 – 300 DVDs, 800 BDs = (5500 * 300) + (6500 * 8000) = ¥6,850,000
      v3 = 300 DVDs, 800 BDs = (5500 * 300) + (6500 * 8000) = ¥6,850,000

      Total: ¥23,220,000

Since I calculate this per-format per-volume on my spreadsheet it also works if one volume is more expansive or cheaper than the others, or there’s a different number of DVDs and BDs, or whatever. A disc that does not rank at all just counts as ¥0, I don’t try to make assumptions about unranked discs (which would be a pittance of money anyway).

  12. something something says:

    Full list posted.

  13. Avatar Luchael says:

Wow, it sure has been a busy week. Symphogear is killing it with those monstrous sales. If only more series could get at least 1/4 of it.

Decent sales for Princess Principal, as expected. Looking forward to its numbers next week. Also, could you add the DVD data for Pripri and Gamers in the “summer update” section?

  14. Avatar Chad says:

The fact that Symphogear still got that amount of sales in its fourth season, shows that its popularity is still steady,

    • Avatar animin says:

you mean Nana Mizuki’s popularity is still steady, Symphogear wasn’t doing so hot before the announcement of the event ticket with Nana

      • something something says:

It was still on track to outsell all but a couple shows this season even before that, and its non-ticket volumes may still average around 10k, which will probably beat everything but Katsugeki in that respect.

Symphogear’s event tickets are important, but not any moreso this season than the for last few.

        • Avatar animin says:

without the event ticket Symphygear would’ve sold similar numbers to season 2 at best. wasn’t Princess Principal going to outsell it pre the event ticket announcement? I still think that show is the true success of this season

          • something something says:

Pripri didn’t enter its major endgame sales boost until about a week before Symphogear’s event ticket was announced. Reconstructing historical estimates is tricky, but about all we can say is Pripri’s *best* estimate was maybe ever so briefly higher than Symphogear’s *worst* estimate, and I’m not even sure if that was ever the case! And its points-to-date total was definitely never higher at any point. Also important to note that Pripri ended up being overestimated, while Symphogar was underestimated, so comparing estimates directly as if they represent the real world numbers will be misleading.

We already have a ballpark for what Pripri could average now: somewhere between 5k and 7k, with the latter being a very optimistic estimate that assumes a long tail for v1 and small drops for the remaining volumes. No realistic estimate would ever have put Symphogear’s sales below that even without event tickets.

More to the point, I’m not sure why the two are being compared anyway. They’re both successes, in very different ways. Pripri marked a solid entry into the market for a new original series. Symphogear AXZ potentially marks an unprecedented fourth season increase, and at worst it’s on track for probably the best fourth season hold ever.

And before crowning Pripri even as the best-selling non-sequel of the season, we kinda need to hold off and see what comes out of Made in Abyss’ massive final boost.
