The Tamayura mystery (it originally showed up with a completely inexplicable 2.4k DVDs and no BDs) has been solved – Oricon just goofed. It did not rank on DVD, and sold 3,480 BDs. That makes more sense! Also the first time I’ve seen such a thing happen at Oricon. Thanks for the heads up from hpulley.
Amusingly, the change in the list means most of the DVDs move up one spot, and Gundam Build Fighters DVD v2 ranks! So we know it’ll rank on DVD at least once now, adding 597 to whatever average the BD Boxes get.

Fall update:
Kurobas s2 v1 sells 8671/8581, total 17,252. That’s better than 4 s1wk1s, about equal to 1, and less than 4. Dead middle. Everything in terms of how it sells vis a vis s1, and whether it’s the best selling show of spring, hinges on whether it still gets those huge wk2s that s1 almost always got. If it moves another 3k+ next week and holds steady for later volumes it should easily be the best seller of fall. If it gets small wk2s, or if v2+ sell a lot less, then IS2’s inflated v1 may prop up its average enough to come out on top, barely.

LitBus Refrain v1 sells 8140/1561, total 9,701. Well, yep, this one was looking way below s1’s performance earlier in the season but it really picked up and this is slightly better than s1v3wk1 and really not far behind s1v1wk1. S1 sold 10,303 so this season miiight drop slightly below 10k but it clearly has the power of consistency on its side.

Strike the Blood v1 sells 4511/1072, total 5,583. And huh I don’t think this had an event ticket, so could this be two solid sellers for Silver Link in one season? Or was there some other bonus that should cause me to expect this to drop in v2?

Log Horizon v1 sells 2881/721, total 3,602. A bit below the 4k estimate, but close.

Infinite Stratos 2 v3 sells 11092/2765, total 13,857

Non Non v2 sells 7159/708, total 7,867. Only down 5.55% from v1wk1 with the event ticket, though I expect it to be like Kinmosa and lose the ground again by selling much less wk2+ than v1 did. Still, fantastic! Even adding 500 next week and not ranking again would put the event ticket drop below 20%.

Machine Doll v2 sells 3185/835, total 4,020. 25% event ticket drop, hit harder on the DVD end as is normal but I thought it would go lower actually so this isn’t bad.

NagiAsu v2 sells 2797/595, total 3,392.
v1 adds 476 BDs, total 3,390 on BDs, DVDs never did rank.

White Album 2 v2 sells 3,096. it’s a BD-only release, remember.

Freezing v2 sells 1745/622, total 2,367.

Tokyo Ravens v2 sells 1694/620, total 2,314.

Yuushibu v2 sells 1,542 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Blazblue v2 sells 1,225 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Noucome v2 sells 987 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Build Fighters v2 sells 597 DVDs, BDs start coming out in March in the first of two BD boxes.

Yowapedal v2 adds 624/852, total 7,239.

Kill La Kill v1 adds 300 BDs, total 10,027. Finally hit that 10k mark.

Magi v1 adds 404/807, total 5,288.

Valvrave s2 v2 adds 626, total 4,709.

Walkure v2 adds 369, total 1,695.

Summer update:
HS DxD v5 sells 6650/1846, total 8,496.

Prisma Illya v5, final volume, sells 5166/657, total 5,823. Series average: 6,655. Should hit almost 6.8k next week. This plus Non Non and maybe even Strike the Blood (no event ticket seems to be in that 5k+ wk1), could Silver Link have 3 hits in 2 seasons after being dismal for years?

Kinmosa v5 sells 5,306 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Please with how consistent this has been. Average should end over 6.5k.

BroCon v6 sells 1715/2902, total 4,617.

Neptune v5 sells 3603/588, total 4,191. This, like Kinmosa, has been consistent. Average currently 4.5k, should get a boost in v7 for the nendroid which will at minimum counteract the usual per-vol drop. I assume it’ll stay over 4.5k average.

Roukyuubu v5 sells 3225/694, total 3,919.

Tamayura v4 sells 3,480 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

DanganRonpa v6 sells 1979/1101, total 3,080.

Love Lab v4 sells 1,764 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Kaminomi v5 sells 1,636 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Uchouten v5 sells 1,493 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Monogatari v3 adds 350 BDs, total 42,389 in wk6.
v4 adds 3137/687, total 40,702. Big second week! Much bigger than for v2-3 and even bigger than v1 in both formats. Suddenly it’s easily within range of matching v3 after a weaker start.

Crowds box adds 395, total 6,897.

Teekyuu s3 box adds 378, total 2,547.

Ser x Ser v6 adds 344, total 2,972.

Past seasons:
Railgun S v7 sells 12437/2077, total 14,514.

Hakkenden v11 sells 1266/705, total 1,971.

Shingeki v6 adds 398 BDs, total 49,438 in wk7.
v7 adds 875/566, total 37,068 in wk3.

OreImo. v8, final volume, adds 1527 BDs, total 14,188. Biggest wk2 outside of v1. Series average: 15,729.

Majepri v8, final volume, adds 406 BDs, total 3,650. Series average: 3,650.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Gundam W BD Box v2 sells 5,240. That already equals v1’s wk2 total so I guess this picked up some more buyers.

Tiger&Bunny DVD Box sells 3,089. A DVD box in this day and age for a late night anime with no accompanying BD box…

Madoka Movies 1-2 adds 424 LE BDs, total 107,192 in wk28. This is just going to rank forever, pretty sure.

Great sales for Kurobas S2 (although I thought it would outsell IS2) and yay 9K for Little busters! Too bad NagiAsu didn’t make it to the prelim sales..
I’m looking forward to see Free’s final volume and Natsume Yuujinchou OVA

    • something something says:

Well it’s already outsold IS2 v2’s wk3 total so it’s fair to say that it’ll be well ahead of IS2’s normal volumes. The question is whether the inflated 27k IS2 v1 keeps it ahead or not.

Even if every remaining IS2 volume sells 15k (which is a little bit of a stretch, but possible) it’ll average just under 17k, with v1 essentially being a free 2k boost. Kuroko can beat that if it has strong wk2s and consistent sales. If it gets a boost from a drama CD or character song or whatever (no idea what they’re including), all the easier.

I’d probably put odds 55:45 in Kuroko’s favor at the moment unless IS2 has something special I’m not aware of bundled in a later volume.

  2. hpulley says:

Tamayura looks like a BD DVD # swap goof but Thursday we should know.

Strike the Blood v1 has an OST CD and 30 page A5 book but no event ticket. It isn’t a full sized novel bonus like UMD v1 so it shouldn’t drop much. Very good news for Silver Link which I have always liked (Tasogare Otome x Amnesia and Kokoro Connect in 2012 didn’t sell well but I bought them). I didn’t get STB but NNB yes! Nourin isn’t looking as good sales wise (nice artwork but plot is uneven IMO).

Almost 10K for LB!R, I didn’t think it would hit 10K… Was wrong. Very consistent though I didn’t buy it this time.

Almost 8K for NNB v2 is less than I dreamed of but still good.

Over 4K for UMD v2 is good, a drop but better than I expected considering the big novel and event ticket v1 extras.

No WA2 v2 yet, did at best just over 3K, I hope it squeaks into 3K at least… Thursday.

    • hpulley says:

Tamayura v4 correction at Oricon so it is off the DVD chart and now has… 3480 BDs, huh? So either another error or the first error was more than just a simple media format swap.

  3. musouka says:

T&B DVD box must be aimed at casual fans right before the movie hits. That’s the only thing I can think of. Female viewers most likely already have the LE BDs because of those great drama CDs, as do any otaku that care for the series.

I wouldn’t mind a BD box, though. I own the singles, but I love the series enough to double dip, especially if there were some nice bonuses to go with it.

    • something something says:

I definitely have to imagine a BD box would sell decently, a least as much as the DVD box, given the BD stock issues the show had. Now I just wonder if they’ve sold DVD boxes to people that would have gladly paid more for a BD box instead but won’t be willing to re-buy the box again for BD.

Seems like releasing both together would have been the wiser move, but I assume they’ve done the math better than I can. But still, the LE BD shortfall for v1 was almost 12k and REs only covered a little under 3k of that, extra DVDs maybe another 1.5k. Just like with Garupan, I really have no idea how fans who missed out ended up filling the hole, because sales of later volumes were much higher and I can’t imagine people just didn’t buy v1 at all. Must have just come in very small restocks over a long time, too small to rank on Oricon. Or used copies.

      • musouka says:

Actually, I believe they eventually sold “kits” to make a regular edition BD into an LE BD. For, I think it was about 2000 yen, you could (at one point) get the empty packaging of the LE case+drama CD to slip your regular edition BD into. I have no idea how they sold, but I do remember seeing at least a few blog posts from (female) Japanese fans excited to get a copy and complete their set. (Most fans just got the regular edition, I assume, but I’m sure among fujoshi especially the first drama CD was a huge bonus because it showed us some key background info on Kotetsu’s wife…)

I’m just so glad the first LE BD was so cheap and I made the decision to purchase it. For a while there, it felt like I truly had a “collector’s edition” considering how much they were going for after they sold out.

        • something something says:

Interesting move with the kits (though that’s still a heck of a shortfall to make up, enough that it probably should have appeared on Oricon), but seriously, Bandai, get your shit together. I know this and Garupan were surprise hits but other distributors manage to cope with that! Still slightly bitter that because of stock issues, Garupan’s official average is 35,999 when it would easily be 38k if v1-2 stock came anywhere near actual demand.

I guess they learned their lesson by the time of Love Live, seeing as how they managed to keep that in stock FOREVER. Maybe they’ll do better in the future?

          • kira-kun says:

Garupan had that Bandai Store exclusive sale back when they ran out. I bet they cleared 6-7K easy there, if not more and Bandai laughed their asses off at all that direct profit. The people who missed out afterwards probably bit the bullet and bought off of the used resellers and such on Amazon like you said. I remember the resale value was crazy though. And the rest picked up the RE in small lots here and there (did not understand why they did an RE).

  5. NATAPORI says:

Ah.Next week for Free! Vol.6 last volume.I can’t wait and see.How much average sell for this series? Can It climb up to TOP5 KyotoAnimation average sell?I’m curious

  6. noririn says:

W..where is Nagi no Asukara V2?
    ;_;

    • hpulley says:

      It sold less than 3113 Hatsune Miku obviously… and so did WA2 v2 ;_;

Wait for Thursday… hopefully not Friday.

      • something something says:

The estimate for it was 2,923 on BD so it’s not too surprising yet that it didn’t sell 3.1k. It might be right under the threshold.

I did think maybe the DVD could rank, but looks like the DVD was a little overestimated, 865 prediction vs the actual disc selling under .620 If the event ticket vol DVD didn’t rank then I don’t think later volumes will unless there’s a much lower threshold at some point. Maybe we’ll get a >100 ranking list estimate. I’ll try to keep an eye out.

  7. something something says:

Updated the post with confirmation that Oricon did just make a mistake with Tamayura. It did not rank on DVD, it ranked on BD, and the number wasn’t even the same! Thanks to hpulley to alerting me to this.

The readjusted rankings actually allow room for Build Fighters to rank on DVD too. It’s not much but BDs will be by far the bulk of its sales. Those start in March as two boxes.

  8. something something says:

So we’ll be getting a NagiAsu v2 DVD number after all, and I used that opportunity to lay out a bit of info on the DVD estimation process: http://www.someanithing.com/?p=785

tl;dr it’ll sell approximately 590 DVDs, though we’ll find out exactly tomorrow anyway.

    • hpulley says:

Yes, we have a few in the 90-100 range that are anime this week that we’ll get on the DVD100 tomorrow. Seems rare that we get extra anime on Thursday for some reason. I’m sure you’ve mentioned why before but I forget.

      • something something says:

I think there are two main reasons:
        1. Since anime sales have shifted so hard to BD, anime DVD versions sell a lot less and are less likely to rank

        2. The majority of mainstream, non-anime releases in Japan are still overwhelmingly on DVD, so there’s a lot more competition on the DVD chart. And a lot of the animation that does chart is family movie stuff we don’t usually focus on very much.

So low anime DVD sales + higher DVD list competition (often 2x the thresholds of BD) = less anime in the DVD 100 than in the BD 100.

As long as there are less than 30 animated DVD releases in the top 100, the Tuesday animation-only Top 30 (with its guaranteed 30 animation titles, albeit not all Japanese animation) will always give us a more comprehensive list than the Thursday all-genre Top 100 (which makes no minimum promise of number of animation titles). And that’s usually what happens.

  9. something something says:

Post has been updated with the full list. I’ll do the usual weekly ranking summary probably tonight when I get home.

Huge list of additions this week – so much anime on the BD chart and even some more on the DVD chart. We get the NagiAsu v2 number and yet more v2 BDs, Kill La Kill hits 10k, Log Horizon v1 data as well, etc.

    • AnimePhoenix says:

So glad to see NagiAsu volume 1 reach nearly 3.4k and volume 2 reaching it in it’s first week.
What do you think are the odds for volume 1 ranking again? Also, do you think volume 2 has a chance to get more copies next week?

YowaPedal volume 2 reaching 7.2k makes me squeal with joy. I hope this ranks next week as well and crosses 7.5k. Volume 3 also has extras and special extras for volume 4 was just announced. I wonder if they’re going to keep adding extras for each volume? That will definitely help keep sales consistent.

Kurobasu season 2 volume 1 did way better than I expected! I thought it would be lucky to reach 15k. Hopefully it has a great week 2 and adds another 3k.

      • something something says:

NagiAsu v1 ranking again? Probably! Thresholds will be low for the next two weeks so it could hit both, if there’s stock. v2 will almost definitely rank again next week.

  10. Anon-kun says:

It pleases me to no end steadily seeing Tesabu this high.
