2017 Total Average Sales, TV/ONA
Note: “0” does not mean exactly 0, it means that no volumes ranked in any format. 0 is used to improve results when sorting.
Note: If BD + DVD percentages do not add up to 100%, it’s because the show had an entry on the “Per-series” Oricon rankings in the mid-year or full-year lists. Those discs can only be counted towards the series as a whole, not a specific volume or format.

Symphogear AXZ wasn’t the summer’s biggest seller, but it will still finish in the Top 5 for the year, a higher chart position than GX did two years ago.
At the very least it should be close. Granblue, Deremas Gekijou s1 and Owari s2 are definitely ahead, as will be LL Sunshine s2. So the best ranking possible is #5.
The showdown for #5 will be between AXZ and SideM. Since SideM’s v1 doesn’t look like it’ll catch up to AXZ’s v1, I think I’d give AXZ a slight edge. But they could easily end up within 1k of each other unless SideM takes a dive after the event tickets. Also SideM has v1-3 tickets, AXZ only had v1-2, so that should put them even closer.
So far AXZ ranks #6 for all of 2017 and its 14,441 average is still up slightly from GX’s 14,229.
This page does not reflect today’s new data yet. There’s an update date at the top of the page. AXZ’s average is currently 13,771. It’s a little ahead of s3 at an equivalent point (v6wk1), but s3 has additional per-series ranking data that brings it to the 14,229 number. If s4 makes the same rankings list it may pull ahead for good.
Still the first season only sold 5,045 on average without a re-release, and the second season moved up to 8,701 on average, and of course the third season got to a 14,229 average. Also, Season 5 is confirmed to premiere of April of 2019.
Yeah, I know. Symphogear has quite probably the most impressive sequel performance of any franchise in history.
AXZ’s 14,002 average is down less than 2% from GX’s 14,229. Amazing for an anime in its fourth season. I wonder how well Season 5 will do. It starts airing in April 2019.
AXZ will pass GX once we get the mid-year per-series rankings.
…Uh, *if* we get the mid-year per-series rankings, I guess I should say, seeing as how we seem to have lost access to most Biz leaks.
Wow,, when i though GBF will win 1st place easily and LL staff drop the bomb for BD7… code for Aqours live in Tokyo dome day 1.. granted they need to sold at least 100k to catch up to GBF average but thats code gonna be huge at least..
7 for 7 on the event tickets, lol. And yeah, pretty darn predictable.
Tbh im not really surprised about the gimmick.. Japan is really famous for that.. even famous artist like AKB did very huge gimmick..
What im surprised about is that they drop tokyo dome bomb.. its really unexpected for they to have tokyo dome concert this early and considering the time between lives.. they really outdone themselves this time..
I am kind of wondering how did 3 gatsu got a second season after horrible first season sales and by the studio shaft?(Maybe two cour show)Even its manga sales don’t rank anywhere.Seems like no one cares about it.From where would all the revenue related to this come from? And Ironically this is my favourite series of all time.
It was likely planned as two seasons from the beginning. What do you mean about the manga not selling, though? The most recent volume debuted at a huge ~480,000 copies. That’s down a bit from the previous volume’s debut, but you have to factor in how much sales have moved to digital platforms since then – so overall it could be an increase for all we know. It only publishes one volume a year though, which is why you’re not seeing it on the rankings very often. It had a live action film last year too.
It’s way bigger than most series that get anime, that’s for sure. It’s unlikely it was ever relying on disc sales.
I didn’t know only one volume is published per year.Considering the factor that there is a very small shogi community in Japan (I did some research) that’s pretty impressive. Thanks for that info.
I’m not sure if this has been discussed here before, but do the DVD and BD audience of a series (and I guess the VHS and LD ones of the past) overlap? Like, will a show still sell the total number of units it sold with simultaneous initial DVD and BD releases if just one of the formats was used?
Depends a lot on the show. If you release DVD-only, you’ll lose more tech-savvy fans who want BD quality. If you release BD-only, you’ll lose fans who don’t have BD players yet. The balance of those two groups will depend on who the potential buying audience is. My guess is that a dual format release will always sell better, but the increase may be inconsequential. And it’s also possible that offering a DVD version could lose you money even if you sell slightly more discs overall – you have extra production costs of manufacturing two different formats plus DVDs usually sell at about ¥1000 MSRP less than BDs. On the other hand, rentals are still almost exclusively done on DVD in Japan so you may want to produce DVDs anyway, though I’m skeptical of how relevant that is for an otaku-focused late-night show that would even consider going BD-only in the first place.
tl;dr, I don’t think it makes a huge different for most late night shows, but it depends. Generally BD-only would be safer than DVD-only these days though, is my guess.
Big congrats to the Symphogear franchise for increasing in sales once again.
Symphogear has gone up in sales for three seasons in a row.
Season 1: 5,045
Season 2 (G): 8,701
Season 3 (GX): 14,229
Season 4 (AXZ): 14,792
By the way, Season 5 has been moved to July 2019, which I think is actually good news sales-wise, since the every two summers release is clearly working in their favor.
