Fall update:
Haikyuu s3 v1 sells 5330/4777, total 10,107. 31.5/10.2% underestimated. Event ticket. Now thaaaaaat seems quite borderline for a 10k average. s1v1wk1 sold 16.2k and finished at 20.1k. This one will maybe end at 12k, 13k at best. It’s only 5 vols rather than 9 like the other seasons but by v5 it should be at least 33% down from v1. I suppose it’ll be close. 10k isn’t impossible but it needs to have a decent v1 tail.

Occultic v1 sells 623/306, total 929. 3.0/27.7% overestimated.

Summer update:
Arslan s2 v4, final volume, sells 1281/814, total 2,095. Series average: 2,513. Down from 3,770 s1.

Mononokean v4 sells 473/602, total 1,075.

Amaama v3 sells 463 BDs, DVDs do not rank. These are still the singles, the box version comes out on Jan 11.

LL Sunshine
v2 adds 492, total 60,166.
v3 adds 1050, total 31,899.

B-Project v4 adds 376/374, total 6,273.

Past seasons:
n/a

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Gundam Origin v4 sells 37652/10177, total 47,829.

Persona 5 OVA sells 12296/2546, total 14,842.

Danmachi OVA sells 3281/660, total 3,941.
BD Box sells 2,415. While the BD Box included the OVA, the fact that the OVA was also sold separately means the BD Box was unlikely to see very much boost from it at all (no original series buyers forced to pick up the box to get the OVA a la Toradora). So a 2.4k box for a 5.2k series is pretty darn good.

Pleiades BD Box sells 901.

Umineko BD Box sells 385.

Bakumatsu Rock BD Box sells 172.

Hayate no Gotoku BD Box sells 139. This box includes season 1 and 2 and some other ovas/specials. Another box came out the same day with s3-4 and other stuff, but didn’t rank.

Garupan got a small bump this week from Amazon repackaging and re-releasing the re-release discs. They were reported under the same SKUs since nothing has changed.
OVA adds 409 BDs, total 69,044 in week 94. That is a ridiiiiiiculous number of times for anything late night to rank, goddamn.
v5 (2015 re-release) adds 370, total 12,825 in week 54.
v6 (2015 re-release) adds 384, total 12,894 in week 52. This covers roughly 20 missed weeks and over 2000 sales for these two! Such a shame v1-4 didn’t make it. They had to be just barely under the cutoff. These two volumes have now more than sextupled their week 1 sales.. What the hell is Garupan, even? The re-release singles average is now 12,027, or 48,313 with the original release. If we had v1-4 updates this week the combined total could be pushing damn close to 50k.

Zaregoto v2 adds 1079/387, total 16,504.

Strike The Blood II v1 adds 379 BDs, total 9,324.

Shirobako BD Box v1 adds 388, total 3,076. Still short of the ¥100m list but it’ll get there with v2, obviously.

Here’s the Fall Vol. 1s currently.

  2. Gintoki_KotAro says:

i hope we see re:zero in the full list

did you think gintama BD box v1 will may sells good?

    • something
      something says:

Next week’s Gintama box is specifically Gintama’. The original series (“Seasons” 1-4, the 2006-2009 anime) BD boxes were back in 2014-2015 (and sold well, 7-8k). The Gintama’ BD boxes are estimated at a much more modest 2k (or maybe 3k if underestimated, as they probably will be to some extent).

Likewise was also very surprised to see thoose BD Box sells specialy since the series wasnt a 10k+ seller so selling half of it was really nice too see, hope this gives it another good push for a 2nd season would really love to see more of it specialy after getting the spin-off next year which will help keeping attention on the franchise so ye i think 2018 would be quite perfect then for the 2nd season of the main series :)

  4. CNL899 says:

I know it was expected, but but any idea why O;9 did so poorly? I thought it was good. (Though I know that obviously doesn’t mean sales.)

    • TasteyCookie says:

From my observation (which definitely isn’t as accurate as something’s) anime disc sales live and die by the hype train. If a series is hyped a lot by fans, it’s sees a much bigger boost in sales, regardless of whether or not it’s their favorite of the season. So speaking of O;Nine, the show actually is liked by quite a few people, getting decent reviews from fans after it’s first episode flop…. But that’s just it, the first episode was a flop so the likelihood of it selling was basically died at that point.

Generally speaking, there’s a list of Japanese fans most anticipated anime of the upcoming season, and it almost directly correlates with how well they sell. With exceptions of course (such as Natsume which probably won’t do as well as they hype.) Just something I’ve noticed.

        something says:

It’s true that if you’re not at least ranking okay by episode three, your show is probably dead as shit. But I’m not sure the hype rankings or even the rankings taken during the season correlate very well to sales. To the extent they do, it’s probably going to be a matter of sequels or adaptations of already big properties understandably topping the charts. Like, anyone could have predicted 3 of the top 5 this season by just saying “utapri, tourabu, haikyuu”.

Of course there’s a lot of these polls out there, so I’m sure some are more accurate than others, even if only by chance.

My go-to answer for why shows have poor disc sales is “So many shows bomb, who can possibly say?”.

Steins;Gate remains the only one of the now four x;y show to put up good sales, so I dunno, I guess the fanbase for those VNs just don’t translate to disc buyers.

  5. Shiro says:

    Occultic;Nine just 929 sales… that´s so sad…

  6. Jim says:

    14 901 901 1 Houkago no Pleiades BD Box

Gainax trying to squeeze a little more blood from the few stones they have left at this point.

Out of curiosity, do you know if this box is the TV series or the ONA or both?

  7. derpinat0r says:

Nice to see gundam still going stronger than ever.along with LLSS and Zargoto.
Good going to Danmachi i’m looking forward to a season 2 with these sales after sword oratoria. i’m hoping it will do the same as raildex with the sales.
Too bad Umineko. i get why it sold so low. the adaption sucked compared to the novel. we need a remake plss.

also when will we get to see the yearly sales?

    • something
      something says:

There’s a series of different yearly lists that come out for different genres/categories, with differing thresholds. But we should have the all the data we’re going to get by the end of January.

  8. Struggling gigolo says:

Is zaregoto (Kubikiri Cycle) a big hit?

I can’t tell how good those numbers are since it’s an OVA.

    • something
      something says:

I have no idea, but I’m going to guess they’re happy? Very few other discs this year have sold that much, so it’s hard to assuming it’s anything other than a success.

  9. AnimePhoenix says:

I hope Haikyuu!! S3 doesn’t drop too much after volume 1. Season 3 was fantastic and I’d love to see a season 4.

    • BlackPoint says:

They will surely make more cuz this is an anime that is selling above 10k and more for more then 3 seasons now. They will probably just wait that there is some more material befor making the 4th season.

      • AnimePhoenix says:

Yeah, I think so too. Haikyuu!! is a big money maker for Shueisha and JUMP. Still, I hope it doesn’t drop too much.

I’ll do the full post tomorrow. Tonight is Flip Flappers night again.

  11. something
    something says:

Okay, I did the post after watching (THE IMPOSSIBLY PERFECT) FliFla after all.

Nothing to add from the per-series ranking (grr threshold too high for Nanoha Vivid wk2 data).

Newtype monthlies add 124 BDs for Re:Zero v5 (9,959) and 67 BDs for Delta v4 (9,851). re:Zero now had three volumes over 9.9k but under 10k, all within 41 units of each other. Latest vol might only get to about 9.5k but with 5 of 9 vols being there or -basically there- it won’t take a ton of yearly additions to secure a 10k average.
