So much for hopes of a solid wk3 from New Game. Now I’m particularly concerned about how v2+ will sell, and don’t feel like it’s even safe to expect a 5k average. Ugh, what happened here?

Summer update:
Fudanshi sells 86 BDs, DVDs do not rank. 43.8% overestimated. Well, that’s a thing. One-shot release so series average: 86.

orange v2 sells 206{CONTENT} BDs, DVDs do not rank.

{CONTENT}LL Sunshine v1 adds 2682, total 74,452 (includes 19 RE BDs last week per the per-series ranking). BD-only release. v2 has an event ticket as well, so I assume we’ll see the same numbers for that volume. v1 is for Day 1 and v2 is for Day 2 so it probably won’t drop. Won’t know what the non-ticket sales will be until v3. And then I guess we’ll see if it goes triple ticket at some point this season with v7.

B-Project v2 adds 277/479, total 13,786.

New Game v1 adds 172 BDs, total 7,109.

Mob Psycho v1 adds 209/161, total 7,013.

Tsukiuta v1 adds 275/208, total 6,163.

planetarian adds 186, total 5,469. One-shot BD-only release so series average: 5,469.

Arslan s2 v2 adds 162/141, total 2,796.

Mononokean v2 adds 162 BDs, total 1,584.

Spring update:
HeroAca v5, final volume, sells 1473/1068, total 2,541. Series average: 3,439.

Sansan v5 sells 1405/292, total 1,697.

Re:Zero v4 adds 294 BDs, total 9,918.

Past seasons:
Phantom World v7, final volume, adds 171 BDs, total 2,452. Series average: 2,191.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Garupan Movie adds 240 LE BDs, total 225,402. LE BD is nearing 200k by itself.

Eupho Movie adds 233 BDs, total 7,042.

Accel World Movie adds 212 BDs, total 6,772.

  1. Shiru says:

    Thank you for the list.
Nothing really interesting this week. I’m curious how many copies will Kuromukuro and Death Note BD box sell next week though. Any expectation?

    • Progeusz says:

Kuromukuro has 3,589 prediction however it doesn’t qualify for stalker’s high priced item penalty meaning actual sales will likely be significantly lower. (amazon artificially boosts ranking of expensive items so stalker penalizes their points to make estimation number more accurate but stalker misses those semi-expensive items like partial boxes which Kuromukuro has)
Death Note box might struggle to rank at all. Seems like everybody forgot about once successful series and ignores the upscaled BD release.

Sorry for that “double post”, I probably clicked the wrong link.

  2. hpulley says:

New Game V2 also has an event ticket. Not sure if that’ll help at all.

LoveLive with tickets in first two and if they do that then why not the last two?

Delta with tickets in 3/4 volumes so far… we are certainly in the ticket age of anime ‘disc sales’.

    • Hahalollawl says:

Do you think those tickets cost them a lot in expenses for the events?

I’m not sure if this will happen with many shows, but if the events aren’t too expensive for them to hold, and they bring extra attention to the series which in turn helps them sell discs and other merchandise, why not put tickets in many/all volumes? Is expense the only reason not to?

      • something something says:

The “tickets” themselves are just little slips of paper with a code and a URL to visit, generally. Cost should be almost zero. But events happen sooner than discs finish releasing for the most part, so including ticket applications in every disc isn’t feasible.

The first Delta event took place in September, for example. Vol. 1 came out in July. There was just enough time to give fans a few weeks to submit their applications and try to secure tickets.
The second Delta event is in January, and Vol. 4 will be out in October. There’s more breathing room this time but they still couldn’t put one in every vol because v7-9 release on or after the event.

You also get diminishing returns if you include multiple volumes of tickets to the same event. And if the event only allows one lottery entry per person, people don’t have a reason to buy multiple volumes just for the ticket. And most shows simply don’t have events that are big enough draws to warrant it. I imagine you also just risk annoying fans if you spread it out so much – starts to look greedy and even JP disc buyers have limits.

It’s not that it’s never happened. Tamayura for example had a “buy all volumes, get an event ticket” thing, though there’s little reason to expect it had much effect on such a niche show. But there’s a lot of reasons why it’s probably not a magic bullet to get more disc sales.

    • lapig says:

      What is partial boxes?

      • Anon says:

BD volumes with four episodes (six for 2-cour shows) each instead of the usual 2/3. Kabaneri for example was sold in three “mini-boxes” like these.

      • Progeusz says:

A “box” usually refers to whole series being releases at once or in case of longer titles over two or more boxes. For example Death Note box has all 37 episodes. Not too long ago Aria released boxes of all respective seasons, each getting one box.
With single volumes it’s as Anon said. So the weird ones (which are only starting to get more popular lately) with 4-6 episodes get called “mini-boxes”, “partial boxes” etc.

  4. Ejc says:

    For Osomatsu-san fans…

Rank / Last week rank / Weekly sales / Cumulative sales / Weeks charted / Title
    **2 *** **9,105 **9,105 *1 Osomatsu-san Special Event Festa Matsu-san ’16 [BD]
    **2 *** *11,398 *11,398 *1 Osomatsu-san Special Event Festa Matsu-san ’16 [DVD]

    • something something says:

I assumed the full list would add this to the “other” list like it does with events so I’d just add it then, but it was skipped for some reason, weird. I’ve added them now.

  5. lapig says:

so we will get about 100 disc range from the extended list this week?

  6. derpinat0r says:

Nice another re:zero hitting 10k. still hoping for a 10k avg. half of the vols might not hit 10k but im still hoping that it does for 6-7 vols. and gets a big boost at yearly sales.

nice for mob psycho. love live still dominating as usual.

  7. anon says:

How does the Garupan movie disc sales compare against other recent late-night anime movie adaptations?

    • hpulley says:

The GaruPan movie sold very well. Recently I think it is second only to LoveLive! The School Idol Movie which sold over 236K. Not sure anything else recently has sold that well but none are close to the Eva movies. I’m not sure though as I can’t seem to find any good lists of anime movie disc sales.

      • something something says:

The only other comparable late night films are the Macross Frontier films and only if you count the game bundles.

        • Progeusz says:

Could you please put up a list with movie DVD/BD sales? The lists on the Internet are all outdated and/or incomplete plus you’re the only person who tracked extended rankings back when they existed.

    • Ejc says:

Everything besides LL Movie and GaruPan Movie should be slightly higher due to the Oricon extended rankings, but the gaps are big enough between each title that I doubt the order will change anyway.

NOTE: The sales from the Macross Frontier Movies “Game Hybrid Pack” editions are not factored in. Just putting this disclaimer again, incase the same person back in May starts to accuse me of forgetting how much the Game Hybrid Pack edition sold.

HeroAca v5, final volume, sells 1473/1068, total 3,439.

that a wrong total or you actually mean average?

  9. something something says:

    Updated with the full list.

Additions from the per-series ranking for the week of 2016-10-03:

    Love Live! Sunshine!! v1 = 74,452 current
    • 4,858 total minus 4,839 (v1wk2 LE) = 19 v1wk2 RE

    Arslan Senki 2nd v1 = 3,236 current
    • 2,579 total minus 2,493 (v2wk1) = 86 v1wk5

    B-Project v1 = 16,747 current
    • 2,028 total minus 1,910 (v2wk2) = 118 v1wk6
    • Divided it evenly between DVD an BD

    Fukigen na Mononokean v1 = 2,465 current
    • 1,466 total minus 1,422 (v2wk1) = 44 v1wk5

  10. JTaicho says:

Garupan Movie adds 240 LE BDs, total 225,402. LE BD is nearing 20k by itself. Think you have a typo, should be 200K.

I sort of remember LL volume 1s having ridiculously long tails even after their tickets expired. Will Sunshine be the same?

Eupho Movie adds 233 BDs, total 7,042.
Accel World Movie adds 212 BDs, total 6,772.

I know they are recap movies, but ouch. Doesn’t bode well for Overlord or Kabanari. And Delta (better not be recap).

    • Ejc says:

      > I sort of remember LL volume 1s having ridiculously long tails even after their tickets expired. Will Sunshine be the same?

The 1st application period lasted from 2014/06/20~7/21, and the 2nd application period lasted from 2014/07/26~08/18. That’s 9 weeks after release, while LL 2nd Season Vol.1 charted for 38 weeks in total, so yeah it charted for a very long time even after the application period ended.

For Sunshine, the application period is for 8 weeks (2016/09/27~11/20), but I don’t think Vol.1 is going to chart for that long, as the sales seem to be more frontloaded compared to the 2nd Season of the original LL. Well, all we can do is wait and see how far Sunshine goes…

The music for Sunshine though, has been charting for a very long time, with the Aqours 1st single having charted for 48 weeks and counting. That’s not much compared to the μ’s Best Album Best Live! collection’s 175 weeks (145 of that was consecutive), but μ’s did set the bar very high for Aqours to try and reach.

  11. Natpori says:

Do you think Yuri!!! on Ice can pass 10K average sell and take top seller below UtaPri or Touken Ranbu – Hanamaru?

    • something something says:

Considering it’s second only to Utapri at Animate, and also ranking decently at Amazon, it is absolutely in the running for 10k+, yes. I’d say so far it’s ranking decidedly better than Tourabu.

      • Ejc says:

It makes me wonder what the proportion of sales are at Animate storefront, because the rankings on the Animate website are only the online rankings. I’ve noticed that there are some differences between the Top 10 on the Animate website and the Charaby Animate exclusive magazine, which is where the storefront rankings come from.

    • AnimePhoenix says:

It’s only the third episode and v1 is also entering the top 100. It even peaked at #58 on Amazon. Unless they really screw things up, I think this can do 10k. Even the non-event ticket volumes are ranking decently on Amazon.

And it’s doing extremely well in Animate. Lots and lots of fanarts on twitter and pixiv too.

I love the show so much, it’s much much much better than I ever hoped. Last time I felt this way was Joker Game.

I’m not sure it’ll beat UtaPri or Tourabu but I hope it can do it!

  12. lapig says:

Did you add Fukigen na Mononokean v2 ?
