Spring update:
Kiznaiver v3 sells 483/319, total 802. Uh, up 24% on v2wk1, for what that’s worth?
Macross Delta v1 adds 615 BDs, total 12,919.
Re:Zero v1 adds 484 BDs, total 10,597. Another 400+ week.
v2 adds 1000/250, total 8,917. DVDs from per-series ranking. With wk2 BD 400 below v1wk2, I think it’s safe to expect a much shorter tail from v2 than from v1. v1 has already added 4.2k, v2 may only end up adding 2.5k (albeit starting 1.3k ahead of v1, so should have a solid hold). it may be a bit short of 10k but I only expected 9k from it anyway so it will at least clear that. And 10k isn’t impossible thanks to the wk2 DVD calculable from the per-series ranking.
Joker Game v1 adds 543 BDs, total 8,711. Pretty small wk2, but it had a much bigger wk1 than expected so still a lot better than expected.
Haifuri v2 adds 489 BDs, total 8,329. In wk2, only 2% down on v1wk3. Not sure if it’ll rank again but it could potentially pass it. Wouldn’t be shocking if so given this volume ha s a more meaningful event ticket than v1 but since this was a small wk2 I’m not sure if wk3 can meet thresholds.
Jojo pt4 v2 adds 466 BDs, total 8,292.
Stray Dogs v2 adds 519/582, total 4,743. Still 42.8% down on v1, gonna be one of the harsher ticket drops this season.
Winter update:
Phantom World v5 sells 1608/302, total 1,910. Depending on wk2s or a final volume boost, looking like it could end up sub-2k without the extended rankings.
Divine Gate v5 sells 487/591, total 1,078.
Koyomimonogatari adds 297 BDs, total 31,165. One-shot release, so also the average.
Konosuba v5, final volume, adds 1283 BDs, total 9,649. Series average: 10,781.
Past seasons:
Osomatsu-san v7 adds 3727/3318, total 41,807. A bit of a drop once again, this volume will probably end below 45k. Just one more disc to go though, and the series should end up with at least 65k and #5 in the 2000-Present rankings. Potential shot at #4 with yearly rankings, but I’m slightly skeptical of that. I don’t expect really large bumps from the yearly ranking.
Gintama v13, final volume, adds 279/303, total 6,717. Series average: 6,967.
OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Persona 3 Movie 4 sells 16600/432 BDs, 2703/210 DVDs, total 19,945. RE DVDs from per-series ranking. RE DVD should be calculable from the per-series ranking next week. Of the four movies, week 1 sales have been 29,445 → 23,746 → 21,053 → 19,735. Total sales are 40,781 → 30,210 → 27,564 → whatever this does.
Garupan Movie adds 556 LE BDs, total 221,546 in wk11. Slowing down a lot from wk10 onward, so should just be a trickle from here on out and then whatever we get in the yearlies. 225k is probably its ceiling now.
Kizumonogatari adds 2782/347 BDs, 636 DVDs, total 45,424. Not an amazing wk2 really, but could have been lower I guess? 50k definitely looking like it’s about as high as it could get. Which likely means mid-40s at best for part two and possibly 40k or slightly below for part 3.
High Speed adds 392/298, total 28,690. Still struggling to get to that 30k marker.
Starmyu OVA v1 adds 353/230, total 7,814.
Upcoming Releases for 2016 08/08 – 08/14 Anime DVD List
There’s literally zero new anime coming out this week.
Dayum Re:Zero vol1 really has a long tail already the 7th time that it made to the rankings and i guess the 2nd vol will probably be up there till wk4 mostly likely with the extended list. Still not many thought for sure that it would be the 2nd best selling anime of spring when there was jojo(previous seasons were sellin allot), kabaneri(with its AoT attempt to lure thoose fans to buy it^^) and hai furi also selling really good.
Yeah, unlike Haifuri, Jojo and Kabaneri Re:Zero’s sales weren’t looking good until halfway through the first cour when it jumped from the 1000s~ to the 100s~ (timely ticket announcement alongside the seventh episode which was one of the strongest so far). Said first volume has yet to leave the first 150/200 positions and the show still has six episodes left so, with some luck, it’ll keep adding 300/400 discs every week until the end. Or maybe I’m just being too positive.
Either way, next release will be crucial for Re:Zero’s aspirations at placing second of the season.
I think #2 is a lock at this point.
• Jojo is a million volumes long, it’ll drop.
• Haifuri is doing well but has finished airing and doesn’t have as long a tail.
• Joker Game is only two boxes and could easily average >8k thanks to that, so this is one to watch out for.
• Kabaneri isn’t in the running for #2, and will as likely as not be below Haifuri and a number of others unless being half as many volumes keeps its average higher.
If I had to guess, not knowing how some event ticket drops will shake out, I’d bet on:
1. Macross Delta
2. Re:Zero
3. Joker Game
4. Haifuri
5. Jojo Part 4
6. Kanaberi
5 and 6 could flip depending on how well Jojo is able to hold but 13 volumes is a looooooot of sales attrition to deal with and Kabaneri only needs to hold on for two more.
And I’m not entirely convinced Delta’s lead over Re:Zero is perfectly secure, but only because we don’t know if it’ll see a relatively gentle event ticket drop of it it’ll totally collapse or something in between. It should in theory build up enough of a lead with v1 to hold off Re:Zero under most normal circumstances though. v1 should probably stop around 14k to Re:Zero’s maybe 12k, and they’re the same number of volumes.
Then again, hell, I suppose I’m not completely sure both Delta and Re:Zero couldn’t drop below Joker Game, if the latter’s v2 hold is very strong and the former two get dragged down by their last half of volumes.
Well we had seen some anime that had steady sales like overlord, mahouka they were selling pretty much with the same nrs each volume and perhaps re:zero can do the same cuz it seems to be on the same level of the popularity as thoose two were but else i dont think it will pass macross think the 1st and 2nd place are kinda given away to macross and re:zero… and joker doesnt really sell that much ye the average will be high but thats just cuz it has 2units with event tickets as i remember if we divide this 2vol of sells into 6 we get a tottaly different picture of it
“if we divide this 2vol of sells into 6”
Why wold you do that? While it’s only two volumes, those volumes also cost ~3x the normal amount (¥18,000 per box), so it’s the equivalent of six discs, just in different-sized chunks. One of the main reasons we compare by average in the first place is that it smooths out differences in MSRP/volume count, so you shouldn’t think of an 8k average from Joker Game as “lesser than” an 8k average from a show with more volumes.
What it really comes down to is revenue per episode. Less volumes usually = more expensive volumes, and by and large it tends to fall in the ¥3-4k MSRP per episode range.
What you wrote in the part with dividing the sales of 2 volumes of 6 episodes each into 6 makes no sense at all, considering each volume is roughly 3x the price of a normal volume with 2 episodes each.
Someone else on MAL posted something similar last week saying, “But, the bd is more expensive for having more eps than the normal?? Because if it has the same price, it s an average sells that we r seeing now”.
Let me go through the reasoning of why 8K sales isn’t considered just average sales, and also how averages actually work:
“The Joker Game BD-BOX has 6 episodes on it, and is priced at ¥19,440 (with the 8% sales tax), which comes out to ¥3,240/episode. A standard 1-cour anime is usually split into 6 volumes with 2 episodes each. Using Girls und Panzer as an example, each volume is priced at ¥7,560 (with the 8% sales tax), which comes out to ¥3,780/episode. So the Joker Game BD-BOX is slightly cheaper than a standard 1-cour anime, but it is not excessively so.
One of the Anime DVD/BD Wiki has the number of TV anime from year 2000 to 2014 at 2,073, while 325 of these TV anime averaged higher than 5,000 copies. That’s ~15.7% of TV Anime from year 2000 to 2014 that have done above 5,000 average. Both Joker Game BD-BOXes have event tickets, so it is reasonable to assume it will average above 8,000 at least, so I ask you how is that average sales at ¥3,240/episode, when ~84.3% of TV Anime from year 2000 to 2014 failed to average higher than 5,000 copies?
I could even just deal with the year 2014, where there were 210 TV anime, while only 32 of them averaged higher than 5,000 copies. That’s 15.2% of anime in 2014, which doesn’t deviate much from the 15.7% of TV anime from 2000 to 2014, so i’m pretty confident that sales considered to be average is much much lower than what Joker Game ended up selling.”
By the way, the TV Anime count does not include TV Anime with live action segments, which the Anime Industry Reports from the AJA also included in their counts. It is strictly TV Anime only.
“Gintama v13, final volume, adds 303 BDs”
dvds**
That they are. Fixed, thanks.
Updated for the full list.
Additions from the per-series ranking for the week of 2016-07-25:
Re:Zero v1 = 10,190 wk6 / 10,674 current
• 8,191 total minus 8,114 (BD+DVD v2wk1 + BD v1wk6) = 77 DVD v1wk6
Joker Game v1 = 8,168 wk1 / 8,711 current
• 8,168 total minus 7,986 (BD) = 182 DVDs v1wk1
High School Fleet v1 = 8,738 wk6
• 8,074 total minus 7,840 (BD+DVD v2wk1) = 234 v1wk6
• Giving it to the BD, DVD should be a tiny fraction of it, if anything.
Jojo no Kimyou na Bouken Diamond wa Kudakenai v1 = 9,369 wk6
• 8,057 total minus 7,826 (BD+DVD v2wk1) = 231 v1wk6
• Giving it to the BD, DVD should be a tiny fraction of it, if anything.
Bungou Stray Dogs v1 = 8,365 wk6
• 3,718 total minus 3,642 (BD+DVD v2wk1) = 76 v1wk6
• Gave it to DVD because VD ranked to wk4 while BD only ranked to wk2. Again, doesn’t really matter which I give it to though.
High Speed! = 28,174 wk2 / 28,864 current
• 3,033 total minus 2,859 (LE BD+LE DVD wk2) = 174 RE DVD wk2
What about Kabaneri? Did it ever achieved 8k?
It only made the top 100 three times, so it’s still 7,778. It made the top 300 once more after that, so even if we had the wk4 number (which we don’t, 101-300 aren’t available anymore) it’d still be below 8k.
