Really going to be feeling the lack of extended rankings this week. =(

Winter update:
Teekyuu s7 sells 1,177 as a one-shot BD-only release.

Pandora v1 sells 855 BDs, DVDs do not rank. 26.6% overestimated.

Mahou Shoujo Nante sells 768 as a one-shot BD-only release.

Konosuba v3 sells 7375/784, total 8,159. Hmmm, I’m starting to think that without the extended rankings, 10k could be a little tough. Only two more volumes to go though.

Gate s2 v3 sells 3783/789, total 4,572.

Drrr x2 Ketsu v3 sells 1115/624, total 1,739.

Bahamut v3 sells 1289/442, total 1,731.

Norn9 v3 sells 820/847, total 1,667.

Shirayukihime s2 v3 sells 1003/646, total 1,649.

Prince of Stride v3 sells 853/755, total 1,608. This show is falling off a cliff. 5,060 v1 > 2,692 v2 > 1,608 v3 with little hope of a wk2.

Galko-chan v2, final volume, sells 1,368. BD-only release. Series average: 1,394.

Rakugo v4 sells 1,144 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Schwarzesmarken v3 sells 1,110. BD-only release.

AnsaKyou s2 v3 sells 530/562, total 1,092.

AoKana v3 sells 1,059 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Aria AA v6, final volume, sells 890 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 1,339.

Dimension W v3 sells 895. BD-only release.

Haruchika v3 sells 408 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Grimgar v3 adds 434 BDs, total 3,800.

Fall update:
Osomatsu-san v5 sells 19239/22064, total 41,393. Looks like it hasn’t bottomed out quite yet, this is 9.3% below v4wk1. This vol should reach 50k but I’m not sure about the rest.
v4 adds 409/641, total 59,196.

One Punch Man v6, final volume, sells 2071/5205, total 7,276. Decent bump over the v5wk1 and slightly over v4wk1. Series average: 9,095.

G Tekketsu v6 sells 6067/700, total 6,767.

Fafner Exodus s2 v6, final volume, sells 5187/753, total 5,940. Best wk1 since s2v1. Series average: 6,364.

Starmyu v6, final volume, sells 2568/1692, total 4,260. Same as OPM, a bump over v4-5. Series average: 6,627.

Rakudai Kishi v6, final volume, sells 2144/504, total 2,648. Series average: 2,963. Could reach 3k with a wk2, but without extendeds that’s not certain. Only v1 had a wk2 outside of the extendeds.

Lupin Part IV v6 sells 1593/564, total 2,157.

Valkyrie Drive v6, final volume, sells 1598/413, total 2,011. Series average: 2,332.

Asterisk v6, final volume, sells 1567/424, total 1,991. Series average: 2,173.

Diabolik s2 v3 sells 1,514 as a DVD-only release.

Noragami s2 v5 sells 701/433, total 1,134.

Heavy Object v6 sells 1,099 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Conrevo v5 sells 571. BD-only release.

Taimadou v6, final volume, sells 449 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 722.

Sakurako-san v6, final volume, sells 449 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 722.

Haikyuu!! s2 v5 adds 961/844, total 12,660.

Past seasons:
Gintama° v11 sells 2793/2886, total 5,679.

Ushio to Tora v9 sells 1591/523, total 2,114.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Garupan Movie sells 162361/6554 BDs, 10558 DVDs, total 179,473. 9.8/16.4/42.2% overestimated. As expected, the DVD was heavily overestimated but the main LE BD came in at less than 10%! Animate wasn’t enough to offset the ridiculous point totals racked up in the Stalker estimate but it got a lot closer than recent discs (re-release singles, Anzio, fandisc). That’s ¥1.7bn in sales just in the first week with the potential for over ¥1.9bn and possibly 200k discs. Having watched the movie yesterday, I can say it definitely matches its reputation.
OVA adds 943 BDs, total 61,676.
v1 re-re-release adds 510 BDs, total 10,198.
v2 re-re-release adds 500 BDs, total 9,144.
v3 re-re-release adds 478 BDs, total 8,714.
v4 re-re-release adds 451 BDs, total 7,877.
v5 re-re-release adds 456 BDs, total 8,027.
v6 re-re-release adds 486 BDs, total 8,016. Re-release average: 8,663. Total with original: 44,949.

Doukyuusei sells 11484/6745, total 18,229. 12.7/31.7% underestimated. I thought it might hit 20k based on Animate ranking, but this is still very good.

Henneko BD Box sells 331.

Strike Witches OVA v1 adds 345 BDs, total 23,424. Amazon had it 85% off so it’s back, again.

  3. Julie says:

Doukyuusei’s sales for a BL movie is impressive. Is that the biggest sales ever for a BL-related anime tv/movie/ova?? Thanks!

    • something something says:

Probably? I can’t think of many other BL things to compare it to. But it’s definitely impressive! I couldn’t ever dare hope for a yuri film to do that well, but I’m glad BL fans support their material, at least.

  4. Lidieth says:

And the last Fafner volume gets a nice boost. Ironically this is partly due to a ‘big announce’ being teased at the last event.
Anyway, I’m happy the second season managed not to drop a lot.

  5. Ejc says:

Putting GaruPan Movie’s sales into perspective…

Note: additional sales from the Oricon extended rankings are not factored in, and the sales from the Macross Frontier Movies “Game Hybrid Pack” editions are not factored in too.

    • primadog says:

Initial sales for Madoka Rebellion was 148,084, so GuP is well on its way already. How likely, though, it can beat Love Live!’s numbers and take the crown?

      • something something says:

I can’t see how that’d be possible. It’s starting almost 25k down and I can’t imagine it’s tail will be that much longer. Sure recent Garupan discs have a super long tail but that’s because of the film. The film itself should be pretty front-loaded. If Garupan’s week 1 percentage of total sales is equal to LL (86.66%), it’ll get to 207,107. Garuan would need for wk1 to only be 76.88% of total sales to achieve the same 233,446 total. While the OVA has an incredibly low wk1 share (only 63.78% of sales in wk1) and the 2015 re-re-release singles even lower (26.53%!!!) those were very unique circumstances that the film does not share. Everyone and their cat has already preordered it, I have to imagine. I don’t think I’d be surprised at a 90% wk1 share…

The extended rankings (well, the top 100 that we still have) won’t be much help either:

        4 ベイマックス MovieNEX 333,288
        5 ラブライブ!The School Idol Movie【特装限定版】 221,950

A small part of the issue is that a larger chunk of Garupan’s sales is locked up in the RE BD and DVD (9.5% wk1) than with LL (4.5% wk1, 4.9% total). Since we’ll never get extended ranking data on the DVD or RE BD, there will be lost sales there after a few weeks. And the LE BD getting to 210k by itself to pass Cars 2 seems like a huge stretch. I think it can eventually pass Eva 1.11 and Toy Story 3 but the gap between those and Cars 2 is enormous. Even if it did, it’d still be short.

Personally I’m just crossing my fingers for 200k total combined lifetime sales. That would be damned amazing. We should have a much better idea of what’s realistic after seeing wk2 sales though. If it’s some massive 20k+ wk2, then wow… but it could easily be half that.

        • Ejc says:

As with all discs with event tickets bundled, it depends on when the lottery application deadline is, because after that date, I would expect sales to drop off. Only late movie goers and fans who buy later on will be picking up the Movie BD/DVD.

          • something something says:

And the ticket itself has to be way less of an incentive for this than it is for a huge and popular concert, so I’m guessing there won’t be all that large a post-release additional rush based on the ticket.

        • Anonymous says:

Currently Amazon is having stock issues with the Amazon edition LE BD, LE BD, and the LE DVD. I wouldn’t be surprised if GuP movie had a significant tail, though not nearly as much as the OVA. Would be super difficult to surpass the Love Live movie total sales, but I could see it passing Cars 2.

        • Christine says:

You forgot Macross Frontier, both movie sold good: around 45K for the BD alone and around 190K for the BD bundled with the demo of the game which came out one year after the release of the demo on the BD.

          • something something says:

There’s debate as to whether the game bundles are fair to count in this case. I could go either way on it. But demo or not, it’s obvious the movie would have sold very very well regardless, so it’d be one of the best selling ever anyway. Just not sure exactly /how/ well.

    • Christine says:

Requoting since i answered the wrong dude.

You forgot Macross Frontier, both movie sold good: around 45K for the BD alone and around 190K for the BD bundled with the demo of the game (Macross Trial Frontier, as it said, it’s just a “trial” for the upcoming “Triangle”) which came out one year after the release of the demo on the BD in 2011 (Macross Triangle Frontier)

      • Ejc says:

        Can you read?

“Note: additional sales from the Oricon extended rankings are not factored in, and the sales from the Macross Frontier Movies “Game Hybrid Pack” editions are not factored in too.”

I obtained this list from a Japanese sales website, and they separated the standalone BD sales from the Game Hybrid Pack. This is what Oricon does too, if an edition is regarded as a game.. see Idolmaster for example. We could debate whether it drove sales or it was the movie itself, but as I wrote there in the note, it is not factored in because they did not do so.

      • Ejc says:

I personally did not forget about Macross Frontier, as I know how much they sold with the Game Hybrid Pack Editions, so don’t go accusing me of doing so.

        • something something says:

These replies are a bit aggressive – I doubt they intended to be ‘accusatory’, they just didn’t read the whole comment (which they should have, yes) and wanted to point out something they thought was missed. I think we can leave it at that.

  6. Anonymous says:

…should I feel bad for series like Bahamut? Pitiful disc sales, and I don’t even know if the novels got a boost… makes you wonder what’s the point sometimes.

    • something something says:

It’s placed #11 in the mid-year list which seems good, but I don’t how that compares to what it did before the anime adaptation.

    • kuuderes_shadow says:

For a series that had about 30k sales for the first volume before the anime aired that’s a reasonable boost. Even once you factor out the sales of 2 new volumes in the time period you’re probably looking at more than doubling the total sales of each volume up to that point.
Both vols 1 and 2 reranked from the anime boost for 1 week. Which is more than a lot of series get.
Vol 8 came out at the same time as episode 2 aired and sold about 20% more than vol 6 did (albeit in 11 days against 10). Vol 9 isn’t comparable as it had 2 versions of which only one ranked.

  7. Ejc says:

Oricon’s overall series ranking in yen is out for May 2016:
    http://www.oricon.co.jp/rank/zzl/m/2016-05/

GaruPan made ¥2,079,500,000 from Anime BD/DVD + Movie BD+DVD + Music BD/DVD/CD + Manga + Books for the period of 2016/05/02~05/29. ¥1,851,177,672 is from the Movie discs’ week 1 sales, which means ¥228,322,328 is from the other categories listed there from 4 weeks of sales.

Love Live made ¥2,458,999,890 for the period of 2015/11/30~12/27. ¥2,113,480,728 is from the Movie discs’ week 1 sales, while ¥143,439,984 is from the Movie discs’ week 2 sales, which means ¥202,079,178 is from the other categories listed there from 4 weeks of sales.

Seems to be very close in other category earnings within the months of their Movie disc release. It’s great to see GaruPan grow to such a massive franchise ever since it was predicted to have a 3,500 average before it aired in Japan in 2012!

At what point is it “worth it” so to speak for a committee/producer to do a disc re-release? Do they need/want to sell a certain amount or do basically any sales make a profit? Or is it too difficult to know?

    • something something says:

Either they determine it’ll sell enough on its own or it’ll tie in nicely with some other continuation of the series (live action, a sequel, a game, whatever). The costs of doing a re-release must be very minimal, otherwise we wouldn’t see all these forgotten shows with super low-selling boxes all the time (a la Henneko this week). You also sometimes see a bunch of boxes rushed out at the end of a fiscal year to boost earnings a little.

    Doukyuusei Bluray 12,272 + DVD 7535 = 19,807
