Winter update:
Divine Gate v1 sells 806/1182, total 1,988. 35.8/56.1% overestimated. v1-2 have event tickets.

Konosuba v1 adds 228 BDs, total 12,745.

PSO2A v1 adds 184 RE DVDs, total 4,175. This one has legs but I’m pretty sure there’s some game-related extra and it’ll drop a lot by the end.

Phantom World v1 adds 279 BDs, total 2,867.

Unranked in either format:
Ojisan to Marshmallow

Fall update:
World Trigger v14 sells 795/337, total 1,132.

Osomatsu-san v1 adds 172/370, total 111,220. I forgot to mention it here last week, but this is by a significant margin (¥100m) the highest grossing single disc of anime since 2000. It beats Bakemonogatari v5 for that honor with ¥692m to Bake’s ¥592m.
v2 adds 329 DVDs, total 81,641.
v3 adds 360/623, total 62,370.

Owarimonogatari v4 adds 185 BDs, total 25,171.

Gochiusa s2 v4 adds 1251/239, total 10,018. Increased wk2 over last time, so it hits the 10k mark again. Every volume so far is higher than its s1 counterpart, except v3 which is 3 discs less… but that’s including 937 discs in s1v3 from the Halloween artbox re-release. And sv3 will pass that in the extendeds this week anyway, no doubt.

Hokuto no Ken Ichigo-aji adds 224, total 6,546.

Starmyu v4 adds 560/439, total 4,854. Larger wk2 than last time helps close some of the gap with v3.

Past seasons:
n/a

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Garupan OVA adds 301 BDs, total 58,979. 60 weeks of ranking and we should expect it to hit 60k sales in a few weeks.

  1. NukaCola says:

i wonder what measure do they use to assess if their adaptation of mobile game was a success or not. Since I believe divine gate is a free mobile game i guess they use downloads?

  2. Painn says:

I expect akito exiled to be number on the charts next week

  3. PP says:

How is Osomatsu-san v1 making so much money? Almost half of its sales are DVDs, I thought Bake and Love Live had something closer to 90% BDs which should make more money (unless Osomatsu-san is just super overpriced).

    • Ejc says:

Bakemonogatari Vol.5 did not sell as many discs as Osomatsu-san Vol.1, while Love Live 2nd Season is 13 episodes and follows the same formula of only 1 ep on Vol.1 as in Season 1 .

Had Vol.1 of Love Live had 2 episodes on it, then of course Love Live Vol.1 would’ve been the highest grossing disc instead, because it doesn’t have a DVD format (only the music live concerts have DVDs since that is handled by Lantis). Sales would not suffered no matter how expensive the disc is as the Movie sold >200K.

    • something something says:

Just simple math! Osoamtsu-san v1 has sold ~35k more discs than Bake v5 in units, and Love Live was a discounted v1 (only ¥4500 MSRP).

Osomasu-san on the other hand is a full price disc. And there’s only the standard ¥1k difference in MSRP between the DVD and BD so yes that’s holding it back, but not terribly so.

    • Progeusz says:

Difference between DVD and BD tends to be ~1000 yen while Osamatsu-san v1 sold over 30% more than Bake v5. Bake’s distribution was far from 90%, it was only 70%. You have to remember it came out in 2009 when BDs weren’t as dominating.
Love Live v1 was sold at close to half price because it only had one episode. Love Live has always had 100% BD.

  4. AnimePhoenix says:

Gooooo Starmyu! Thank goodness it had a better week 2. Hope it can cross 5k next week. Speaking of the number 5, volume 5 comes out next week too. <3

  5. 37 says:

I hope somehow this Chihayafuru BD box is some sort of decision maker for season 3, I need it, come on Madhouse.

    • Hahalollawl says:

To be honest, now that they decided to go the live action route, I’m not optimistic about a 3rd anime season of Chihayafuru. Maybe the box will be an indication of how much interest there still is in it, but the sales for the two seasons weren’t really stellar (not bad, but not great). Not sure if they made a lot of money some other way.

Although since I haven’t gone to the manga to find out everything that happens after season 2, maybe I’m still holding out that hope for a season 3 too haha…hope this isn’t too much of a downer.

      • It’s all up to Nippon TV’s Okuda. He’s the executive producer for the show and NTV’s own content section head. He’s the one who pushed for the show to be made, even if no one else would finance it besides his station and NTV’s subsidiary video/music package company. He’s also in charge of the live action movies (which shows how much he enjoys the series and feels it’s financially viable). I’d say there’s actually a good chance more would be made.

        • hpulley says:

I certainly hope you’re right! It was fun to see Seto Asami and the live action actress together on commercials promoting it. I feel the 3rd season is now too late, that it would have been a great lead up to the live action but I’m hope I’m wrong and it still has a chance.

        • Hahalollawl says:

Well that’s interesting and would seem make it more likely than I had thought. Didn’t know that one guy had so much power. Don’t want to get my hopes up too high, but maybe it does have a chance.

    • hpulley says:

Madhouse could decide not to animate it but they don’t decide if it gets made. Kodansha decides that. The manga still sells really well. As Hahalollawl says, it has done the live action already. I thought the last chance for more anime would have been to help advertise the live action as that has happened a lot lately but… the live action has already come so I’d say the anime’s chances of season three went from slim to none. Very sad as the story in the manga is still great, is still going strong and already has way more than enough material for a third season.

The way the manga is going it may end up going beyond high school which is rare but it runs in a josei magazine so it isn’t limited to the high school graduation ending that usually happens. They can go on to jobs, marriage, kids all while staying in josei. 31 volumes and counting, it could happen! I’ll keep on buying every one…

    >100 143 **,171 *,*21,666 136 Love Live! μ’s First LoveLive!

Too bad the usual guy who posts the full lists no longer posts Music BD/DVD sales that are outside the Top 100 overall BD/DVD… but what a lucky break! Looks like the 1st live added 3,898 discs over the 36 weeks of missing data.

Still only around 1/3 of the sales of the 4th and 5th Lives though, and under half of the sales of the 3rd Live. I’m not quite sure how the 6th/Final Live is going to end up selling… perhaps 80,000~90,000?
