Winter update:
Konosuba v1 adds 2107/317, total 11,940. That’s a heck of a wk2, and given this is only five volumes, the odds of another 10k alongside Koyomimonogatari for Winter suddenly look much higher, even downright likely. It really depends on how much of this volume’s sales are boosted by the bundled mini-RPG.

Grimgar v1 adds 375 BDs, total 5,510.

Gate s2 v1 adds 378 BDs, total 4,758.

Prince of Stride v1 adds 454 DVDs, total 4,465.

Bokumachi v1 adds 524 BDs, total 3,566.

Norn9 v1 adds 330/316, total 2,561.

Active Raid v1 adds 309 BDs, total 2,179.

AnsaKyou s2 v1 adds 171/318, total 2,054. BDs from extended.

Fall update:
Utawarerumono s2 v1 sells 3,795 as a BD-only release. Two boxes total. 34.2% underestimated, which is a lot for a box release.

Owari no Seraph s2 v4, final volume, sells 1245/854, total 2,099. Series average: 2,484. Down from 3,823 s1.

Shomin Sample v4 sells 558 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Osomatsu-san v1 adds 443/967, total 109,802. 110k next week for sure.
v2 adds 463/932, total 80,497.
v3 adds 4659/6134, total 58,914. v3wk2 nearly identical to v2wk2 despite starting 14k lower, so much higher by percentage. Boosted by the show ending I guess.

Owarimonogatari v4 adds 1651/312, total 24,540. DVDs from extended. Highest wk2 so far. Covers some of the gap from a slightly lower wk1.

One Punch Man v4 adds 632/350, total 8,012. I estimated it’d do more like 1k wk2 this vol than the 632 it did wk2 last vol and it did 982 so close enough! wk1 sales were lower than usual last week, which often means a higher wk2 than usual to make up for it.

G Tekketsu v4 adds 1068 BDs, total 7,790. As with the above, slightly higher wk2 than usual.

Fafner Exodus s2 v4 adds 453, total 5,933.

Hokuto no Ken Ichigo Aji adds 858, total 5,766.

Shinmai Maou s2 v4 adds 529 BDs, total 3,325.

Diabolik Lovers s2 adds 652 DVDs, total 2,276.

Past seasons:
Charlotte v7, final volume, sells 5423/953, total 6,376. Series average: 7,068. Perfectly solid as long as you weren’t expecting Angel Beats! numbers.
v6 adds 241 BDs, total

Ushio to Tora v7 sells 1623/542, total 2,165.

Gintama° v9 adds 324 BDs, total 5,014. One vol left, will hold onto a 6k average. Previous seasons were 15 > 15 > 15 > 12 > 9 so it’s definitely winding down in terms of disc potential.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Kokosake sells 22966/3324 BDs + 4664/2751 DVDs, total 33,705. Runs very close to Anohana’s 35,770 wk1. Anohana ended at 45,304.

Digimon Adv 2 sells 9608/2804, total 12,412.

Working!!! OVA sells 4174/2017, total 6,191. Should beat s3v1 soon to get ahead of all the s3 volumes.

Garupan OVa adds 418 BDs, total 58,379.

Aria the Natural BD Box adds 767, total 13,869.

Utawarerumono s2 v1 sells 3,795 as a BD-only release. Two boxes total. 34.2% underestimated, which is a lot for a box release.

so there is gonna be only v1 and v2 since two boxes?? cuz i was already wtf by how much it sold, specialy since the whole season was allot worse then the 1st, i was really dissapointed by this new utawarerumono….anyway if its just 2 boxes then thats just fine doesnt deserve more sells then that…

    • something something says:

Yes, only two volumes, 12-13 episodes each box. It’s not common, but other shows have been released like that.

Compared to the first Utawarerumono it’s already on track to drop by half. That sold 8,371.

      • BlackPoint says:

Aha well its gonna be a nice waste of money for them thats for sure, kinda doubt they gonna go and make the 3rd season out of that 3rd game and surprised its not even a higher drop by the fact how much worse it is from the 1st season….

    • Gatmar says:

It may have been a drop…compared to it’s predecessor…it is not only due to drop in quality of the second season but also keep on the fact that first season aired nearly a decade ago so it has lost some fans over time…Still due to it being a box set with a higher price..is it still a finacial success at least? i am not to clear how box set sales success rate are at.

      • something something says:

Releasing in boxes is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, less volumes so less drop-off (or none if one box). If you can package a nice event ticket or bonus in the release you might get most of the benefit of that with no worries about the usual plunge after. On the other hand, the MSRP of a box release is almost always lower than the combined MSRP of an equivalent number of singles, so you have to move more units to equal the gross revenue of the same average number of singles. On the third hand, one or two boxes is 2-9 times less units to ship to retailers, less packaging ordered, less volumes to get retailers to stock, etc.

I have to imagine there’s no clear cut way it leans every time. Sometimes it’ll helps, sometimes it’ll hurt.

  2. fourteenwings says:

Poor NORN9, it was quite the breathtaking adaptation.

    • Hahalollawl says:

Was it? Hmmm, I think I only watched the first episode or two (which was fine I guess) but wasn’t sure if it was worth watching more of. Maybe for yanaginagi though…

Also, 2231 might not be great, but considering it’s a shoujo adaptation, maybe that’s not as low as it could have been…not sure if that’s a consolation

  3. NukaCola says:

Good for owari no serafu. I wish it had more merch. But it did have an acceptable animu manga boost.

    • BlackPoint says:

well already the 1st season for owari wasnt selling that good around 4k and 2nd season gonna go now with 2,5k, its a quite bad seller but yeh the manga did get a huge boost so ppl probably rather buy that then BD-DVD disc…

  4. Painn says:

I like seeing anthem of the heart doing well

    • Anon says:

Did it -really- do well? For such pretentious project with an Eva-tier number of screenings I think it underperformed in both box office and disc sales.

      I quite liked it though.

      • something something says:

An original film matching the box office (and it looks like disc) success of the film from the wildly popular Anohana? I’d say that’s a pretty clear success. Anime original films don’t just snap up ¥1bn box office very often! Fuji must be delighted.

        • Anon says:

Yeah that’s true but only because it rode AnoHana’s success. But even then with double the screenings, close to the 150, I expected it to do better especially considering how Aniplex mass bombarded it.

          • something something says:

Number of screens only has a very loose correlation to box office gross. Mainstream releases hit over 300 theaters but the top tier of niche anime movies beat most of them with barely 100 (or less) screens. I wouldn’t let the higher number of screens for Kokosake influence your opinion about its success very much.

Given that it was marketed as “the next film from the Anohana team”, slightly better box office and probably the same disc sales means they scored a virtually 100% (or better) retention rate among their intended audience. With an original film! That’s very impressive.

  5. Anon says:

Arpeggio Ars Nova Cadenza adds 1,751/579, total 24,626. I thought it’d reach the 25K in the second week but it fell a bit short. Not bad though.

  6. something something says:

As low as these v1s are, somehow they are still not the season’s worst in terms of sales (assuming Komugi and Reikenzan stay perpetually unranked).

  7. Anonymous says:

Does these sales include amazon website’s sales or just stores’ sales?

    • something something says:

Amazon is included, and is likely the single biggest factor for late night anime. For physical storefronts, the big deal is Animate (though they have a site as well of course), particularly for shows aimed at women.

A list of retailers covered by Oricon is here: http://www.oricon.co.jp/rank/about/

  8. Anonymous says:

Because i heard someone saying rakudai sold 3.5K only on amazon so it actually sold around 10K.What an idioi.

    • something something says:

While actual sales are always higher than what Oricon reports, it wouldn’t be that much of a gap for a title like this, no. I’m not sure why they think only Amazon is included. Maybe they’re mixing it up with Amazon Ranking Stalker, which only looks at Amazon rankings when making its predictions. But its predictions are done in such a way as to predict Oricon’s sales reports, not simply Amazon-based sales. And Oricon is much more than Amazon. This is why if a title sells disproportionately better outside of Amazon than is normal (like a show with a largely female audience who are overwhelmingly buying at Animate like with Utapri or Free), Stalker will underestimate significantly because Amazon isn’t as representative a portion as usual.
