Original comments on last week's mess, now obsolete

Original comment: CONTENT WARNING: EXTREME GRAPHIC VIOLENCE COMMITTED AGAINST INNOCENT ANIME SALES
What. The. Fuck. Happened. This. Week? What a bloody massacre. Absolute nonsense all over the place, steep drops with zero explanation for ongoing shows that were reasonably consistent up until now, numerous huge overestimations of the kind we only rarely see for new releases, just a complete and utter disaster. If a couple releases weren’t spot on to what you expect, I’d be 99% sure Oricon fucked up this week. As if is, I’m still like 65% convinced they fucked up.
Currently petitioning Stalker to just pretend Amazon editions don’t exist, though that doesn’t completely explain every case. Still, if you’re excited for a show and see about half its estimate coming from the Amazon edition… cut your expectations in half. (And yes this means to reign in your expectations for Symphgear GX significantly, more 11-12k than 18-19k wk1 I think.)

Afternoon update: My current best guess as to what happened. Hopefully we’ll know soon.

EVENING UPDATE: Yep! Soundscan differs greatly, in exactly the ways I expected. Also some other ways, which in addition to last week’s data are revealing that it’s super shit at tracking anime specialty shops. This is clearly still hurting Kurobas a little, and probably Deremas as I don’t think Aniplex+ is included. This may also explain both why Charlotte was so underestimated going by Oricon sales, and why Soundscan has such a low number for it. It must be moving a ton at Aniplex+ shop.

Because of the super rare circumstances today, I’m posting the Soundscan tables as well (I won’t normally do this). If you’re curious about Soundscan having slightly different this week and total numbers for series in their first week, my assumption is that it’s counting a handful of discs that were reported/sold really early. Just pay attention to the total in this case.

Some comments:
1. Every item in blue is a release for which I’ll be using the Soundscan number over Oricon. I have some plans for how to deal with this for wk2+, assuming Oricon fixes its reporting for next week…

2. No surprise, every one of the discs with higher sales on Soundscan is a 9/25-26 release. This supports the earlier hypothesis.

3. Soundscan is bad at discs biased towards anime specialty retailers, or towards Aniplex+. The only 9/25-26 title that saw a decrease with Soundscan was Illya, which is storefont heavy. Deremas rose, but not as much as it very likely should have – basically, we gained Amazon sales but lost Aniplex+ sales, so it’s probably still a good 1-1.5k below what it should be.

4. One series that likely got shafted then is Illya, since both Oricon and Soundscan had blind spots this week that missed some of its sales. That said I don’t think it’d be *much* higher if we got the full details. maybe 3.5k? And any 9/25-26 release below the Soundscan thresholds is also screwed. Sorry Koufuku, Seraph, AnsaKyou, Gatchaman s2, Kuusen Madoushi, Junjou, basically everything that didn’t make the prelims or rank on Soundscan. Those sales are gone forever, lost to the void =(

Update 2015-10-06: Based on the following weeks’ data, this is all fixed now. The missing Amazon data is back. I’m going to just list the Oricon information below now.

  1. Avatar Chipp12 says:

Speaking about Gakou Gurashi! manga boost it looks like it’s sales have broken 1,200,000 just recently:
    http://yaraon-blog.com/archives/70524

    • something something says:

Yep, 200k a volume is damned good for Houbunsha’s Manga Time. Disc sales are still disappointing, but we certainly cannot call the adaptation a failure.

  2. Avatar rederoin says:

Well, On my spreadsheet KM S2 now shot up back to a 4.9k Average.
    Crises averted, I’d say.

  3. Avatar moonnya says:

Day 26 with TLR and GakkouGu is affected as well. I’m afraid this is Oricon new thing, or they made the problem a whole week. Charlotte seems unaffected, but its Aniplexed, so Idk whether day 23 has some issue or not. How the Shigatsu and Nanatsu sale compared to the other weeks? oh wait they are both Aniplexed … So we don’t know whether day 23 is affected or not … Lets hope that Oricon has some little issue and make things right next week

  4. Avatar Lindsay says:

Any guesses to the final average of Charlotte. How much will the drop be?

    • something something says:

If current estimates hold *and* it’s roughly as storefront-biased as v1 was, it should remain fairly consistent. I don’t see any indication of an event ticket in v1 and the artbox requires an all-volume purchase, so I don’t think it’ll drop a lot.

Would need to see how long v1’s tail is, but maybe a 6-7k average?

  5. something something says:

Updated with the G4U sales for Deremas v5. They seem a little low, but within the realm of possibility. Still a 20k week 1. we just need to see if it’s going to miss out on a bunch of wk2+ sales for the standalone disc on top of whatever it already missed out on wk1. This volume could end up suppressed by a few thousand.

  6. Avatar Ejc says:

For UtaPri fans, Oricon does not track the sales of the concert discs, but Soundscan does. The 4th concert was just recently released on Sep 24, so here are its 1st week sales:

    SSBD 26,191
    SSDVD 18,002
    SS合計 44,193

Comparing to the 3rd concert 1st week sales…

    SSBD 21,913
    SSDVD 20,026
    SS合計 41,939

So we again see the gradual shift of female buyers to the BD format over the DVD format… but also it seems like the music/concert fanbase has slightly grown somewhat. The total sales of the 3rd concert is:..

    SSBD 25,321
    SSDVD 23,712
    SS合計 49,033

but bear in mind that Soundscan has much higher thresholds than Oricon, and Soundscan has also been shown to have some difficulty with storefront heavy titles (the 4th concert is so strong at Animate, being on par with the Love Live Movie there).

    • Avatar AnimePhoenix says:

UtaPri cannot be stopped. That’s both a good thing and a bad thing lol. More female buyers getting the BD format, hmm.

  7. Avatar primadog says:

Given all the ambiguity with both numbers, wouldn’t it be better off to just discard this week’s data all together? If I recall correctly, your average calculation ignores any volume with no data, which usually means below threshold. Given how questionable the data is this week, that might be a better option than picking and choosing which number to use.

    • something something says:

In light of the new dailies it looks like this will become a moot point, but I’d rather have partial data for vol 1s than erase them entirely. That’d mess up averages more than including the data, I think.

      • Avatar Marcelo M says:

In exceptional cases such as these would not be better to put comments following table to explain the whole situation?

        • something something says:

I included a bunch of commentary in the post. Both above and below the Soundscan tables.

I’ll also be doing an additional explanation post once we get next week’s data and see if they really did fix the issue (which it looks like from the daily rankings).

  8. Avatar Anonymous says:

From today’s Oricon daily ranking, it seems…they actually added back the missing sales for 25/9-26/9 released show.

We will see in next week.

    • Avatar Ejc says:

Looks like I wasn’t the only one who noticed this. Will be interesting if this is the case…

      • Avatar primadog says:

Knowing exactly how many copies Amazon sells would be a huge pay off!

      • something something says:

I was very skeptical, because pessimism is my life philosophy, but yeah this *has* to be the missing data. There’s simply no other way Deremas, Overlord, TLRD2, Kuroko, Geass BD box, Kinmosa, and Gakkou Gurashi could have made the daily rankings on the *next* week’s release day. And what do you know the order in which they’re listed very closely matches the expected amount of missing sales… And most notably, this can’t be organic wk2 data because the one show that sold really well last week that *isn’t* ranking again is Charlotte, a show that didn’t have issues last week.

lol can’t wait to do this sales post for a THIRD time to revert back to Oricon data. But hey, this is the best possible outcome, because they or Amazon or whoever acknowledged and fixed an issue, which means it shouldn’t be an ongoing thing.

And jeeze this going to make next week’s thresholds ridiculous.

(Watch them fix last week’s data and end up screwing up this week’s, in a never-ending loop of screwups and corrections…)

        • Avatar rederoin says:

Here is hoping the lower thresholds of the top 100 are not too high. or maybe we’ll get some lower thresholds from the top 300 like with DVDs?

To be honest, I don’t really know how the top 100-300 works, don’t remember the last time data from it was needed.

          • something something says:

I use data from 101-300 every week. Everything that makes the top 300 gets updated in oricon’s database, and we see this as updates to the extended rankings. Those comments I do every week (usually on the weekend) listing how many DVDs and BDs changed are based on that. For example: http://www.someanithing.com/3828/comment-page-1#comment-60516 – across the top 300s, ~50 DVDs and ~90 BDs in the “animation” category had some sort of update last week. We only saw about a third that many BDs in the top 100, so the other 60 or so were purely based on the 101-300 data. Not all of those 60 are titles I track (there’s Disney and mainstream and kids shows and so on in there) but a fair chunk are.

So while very low-selling titles from last week probably won’t get their missing data added in the top 100 this week, most of them should still make this week’s top 300, and be reflected in the extended rankings.

The only way the data is truly lost is if it was missing last week, and this week wasn’t enough to make the top 300. And if that’s the case, it was doing rather dismally anyway. That said the 300 threshold could be quite high this week because we have to consider it wasn’t just anime that was affected, anything sold at Amazon would have been.

This will hit DVDs worse than anything else. I think a lot of titles could still be down a few hundred there.

About today daily ranking i find it’s weird that Joukamichi no Dandellion with estimated 3.2k is nowhere to be found in daily ranking today and yesterday since even shows with lower estimated ranked, it has even ticket with some popular female seiyuu as main cast, i’m not sure how that show will be overestimated

    • something something says:

It’s slightly suspicious, but very much within the bounds of reason. ignoring DVD (thresholds are too high), its BD estimate was 2,371 and it’s been basically non-existent in rankings at other shops. This could imply it is Amazon-biased, and will sell less than that.

In the 9/29 pre-sale rankings, above it is Ushio to Tora, which has a 2,895 BD estimate. That only ranked 27th, so it wouldn’t be odd if Dandelion is a couple spots below it and missed the Daily Top 30.

The only potentially strange thing is that it’s also behind Shirayukihime, and that’s only got a 1,086 BD estimate. However, that could be explained by Shirayukihime doing very well at HMV and modestly okay at Animate. It should be much less Amazon-biased than Dandelion. Probably the HMV number is more relevant to 9/29 rankings because we’re talking pre-sale day here. This also applies to Ushio to Tora which was quite dominant at HMV this season. (HMV generally doesn’t count for much but Dandelion is a low seller so it doesn’t take a lot to make a difference.)

As for it not ranking on 9/30, release day, that’s easily explained by the flood of last week’s titles taking up many of the spots as they play catch-up. They’re getting their data from 9/24-9/29 all reported in one big lump on 9/30 and that can easily eclipse Dandelion’s release day.

So there are some very good potential explanations for it missing the top 30.

      • Avatar 8888 says:

Dandelion ranked yesterday for 1/10, i think that’s probably Amazon day.

It seems oricon won’t screw Symphogear, still in top2 since its release and DVD charting well too, will it higher than estimated?

Also looking at the full ranking, Gatchaman Crowds is dead?

        • Avatar Ejc says:

It’s hard to tell how high Symphogear will sell, because there’s nothing really to compare with. All we have is Symphogear definitely selling higher than 7.4K since it has been above JoJo SDC Egypt-hen Vol.6, and selling lower than the expected 50K+ 5th Love Live concert.

As a fan of Symphogear, i’m hoping its not too overestimated… because it’s not expected to sell close to its Stalker estimate. Maybe 12~13K is my guess.

Again, these sales are all lower than they should be due to the Amazon issue. but based on the daily ranking charts it very much looks like we will be getting the missing info in next week’s list, though, so I’ll be able to get rid of the Soundscan data, switch back to all Oricon, and cross fingers in hopes that most of the series that got shafted this week manage to rank in wk2 and get that data back.

Almost all of them should, because it does not take a lot to make the top 300 on BD. Sometimes that’s as low as 50 discs, though I imagine it’ll be a significantly higher threshold this week (over 100?).

  12. something something says:

Updated for the full list, but keep in mind this will change next week when we get the missing data and I remove the Soundscan data.

  13. Avatar Ejc says:

    > Upcoming Releases for 2015 09/28 – 10/04 Anime DVD List

The list is missing an anime-related 09/30 release:
    ラブライブ!μ’s Go→Go! LoveLive! 2015~Dream Sensation!~
    http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B012OW2T9G/

I know it’s not tracked by Stalker since it’s labelled as Music → Anime/Game at Amazon, but since the Love Live concert discs are always included in the full lists, seems appropriate to be included. Doesn’t seem all that different from the Milky Holmes lives or the Free! -ES- Special Event.

    • something something says:

It not being on Stalker is the only reason, as I get my list from Stalker’s upcoming releases page – it wasn’t left out intentionally. Updated the list.

  14. something something says:

Updated the post a bit to remove some of the back-and-forth comments and standardize the format now that we know we’re probably getting more Oricon next week.

Also trying some styling things because I don’t really like how the bolding was working out. In that mess of comments text, the only thing most people care about most of the time is the title and the total sales number. Not sure of the best way to make them pop out but I’m trying this for now.

  15. Avatar Player0 says:

Does anyone knows how is Rokka doing ?

    • something something says:

Volume 1 sold 551 BDs, DVDs did not rank. It’s very dead.

Edit: Going through the extended rankings now and in its second week it’s reached 636. Which, uh, doesn’t change anything but might as well give the latest number.

I just can’t understand jap. A masterpiece does not deserve that

        • something something says:

I’m sure there are plenty of shows that are unpopular outside of Japan you could say that about as well. No shows really “deserve” success or failure, it’s just something that happens.

          • Avatar Trung says:

Your opinion is neutral.A professional reply. But as a casual,I believe it deserves success.Moeblob is now the most popular. No ones care about a good story.I just cant give a shit about cute-girl-doing-cute-thing.

            • Avatar Player0 says:

I feel so bad, well at least I bough 2 copies right now, after all, I loved the anime

            • something something says:

Yeah okay you’re clearly on the wrong site. ANN forums are that way —>

            • Avatar Ejc says:

So how does being a “casual” have any relevance whatsoever? Your opinion is not the only one. There are casuals who also like those types of shows that you don’t give a shit about. Heck they probably don’t give a shit at all about what you like.

If you can’t give proper justifications of why you have such an opinion without trying to belittle others by saying “Moeblob is now the most popular. No ones care about a good story”, then don’t say anything. End of story.

              • Avatar Trung says:

Why I said I don’t care about it mean belittling others. You are overreacting.

                • something something says:

Well you need to care about it here or you’ll be banned. I virtually never need to ban people from this site, don’t go out of your way to be, like, #4 ever. This conversation is done.
