Original comments on last week's mess, now obsolete

Original comment: CONTENT WARNING: EXTREME GRAPHIC VIOLENCE COMMITTED AGAINST INNOCENT ANIME SALES
What. The. Fuck. Happened. This. Week? What a bloody massacre. Absolute nonsense all over the place, steep drops with zero explanation for ongoing shows that were reasonably consistent up until now, numerous huge overestimations of the kind we only rarely see for new releases, just a complete and utter disaster. If a couple releases weren’t spot on to what you expect, I’d be 99% sure Oricon fucked up this week. As if is, I’m still like 65% convinced they fucked up.
Currently petitioning Stalker to just pretend Amazon editions don’t exist, though that doesn’t completely explain every case. Still, if you’re excited for a show and see about half its estimate coming from the Amazon edition… cut your expectations in half. (And yes this means to reign in your expectations for Symphgear GX significantly, more 11-12k than 18-19k wk1 I think.)

Afternoon update: My current best guess as to what happened. Hopefully we’ll know soon.

EVENING UPDATE: Yep! Soundscan differs greatly, in exactly the ways I expected. Also some other ways, which in addition to last week’s data are revealing that it’s super shit at tracking anime specialty shops. This is clearly still hurting Kurobas a little, and probably Deremas as I don’t think Aniplex+ is included. This may also explain both why Charlotte was so underestimated going by Oricon sales, and why Soundscan has such a low number for it. It must be moving a ton at Aniplex+ shop.

Because of the super rare circumstances today, I’m posting the Soundscan tables as well (I won’t normally do this). If you’re curious about Soundscan having slightly different this week and total numbers for series in their first week, my assumption is that it’s counting a handful of discs that were reported/sold really early. Just pay attention to the total in this case.

Some comments:
1. Every item in blue is a release for which I’ll be using the Soundscan number over Oricon. I have some plans for how to deal with this for wk2+, assuming Oricon fixes its reporting for next week…

2. No surprise, every one of the discs with higher sales on Soundscan is a 9/25-26 release. This supports the earlier hypothesis.

3. Soundscan is bad at discs biased towards anime specialty retailers, or towards Aniplex+. The only 9/25-26 title that saw a decrease with Soundscan was Illya, which is storefont heavy. Deremas rose, but not as much as it very likely should have – basically, we gained Amazon sales but lost Aniplex+ sales, so it’s probably still a good 1-1.5k below what it should be.

4. One series that likely got shafted then is Illya, since both Oricon and Soundscan had blind spots this week that missed some of its sales. That said I don’t think it’d be *much* higher if we got the full details. maybe 3.5k? And any 9/25-26 release below the Soundscan thresholds is also screwed. Sorry Koufuku, Seraph, AnsaKyou, Gatchaman s2, Kuusen Madoushi, Junjou, basically everything that didn’t make the prelims or rank on Soundscan. Those sales are gone forever, lost to the void =(

Update 2015-10-06: Based on the following weeks’ data, this is all fixed now. The missing Amazon data is back. I’m going to just list the Oricon information below now.

  1. Avatar Hahalollawl says:

Yikes. Well, congrats to Charlotte/P.A. Works/whoever else was on that committee. Not bad for an original series.

    • The committee was:
      Aniplex/Ascii Media Works/Tokyo MX/Visual Arts (Key)/P.A. Works/Movic/BS11/MBS

The original creator (owns IP rights) is Jun Maeda, so he gets the royalties from everything.

      • Avatar Hahalollawl says:

At this point it might be best just to assume Aniplex is part of a project unless there’s a reason to believe otherwise…

Oh wow, I was thinking about commenting that Jun Maeda gets royalties from everything but the music but then I looked and…what do you know, he was even in on the music. Charlotte is his brainchild isn’t it…

Anyways, I’m pleased to see an original series do well, and I think it’d be nice to see more original series do well if they’re high quality.

  2. Avatar Guest says:

Junjou Romantica has 1.7k Amazon estimates, how likely it is Oricon screwed up with those too? Seems too much of a drop for such a well-received series. Not counting it’s been ranking in both BD and DVD daily top 20s constantly since its release.

  3. Avatar moonnya says:

The Charlotte price on Amazon looks normal to me. And Charlotte didn’t rank in top 100 that much. I wonder what cause the underestimate. Out of sell ?

    • something something says:

Underestimation means it did disproportionately well at stores other than Amazon. If it sold a lot at HMV, Animate, Gamers, Aniplex+, etc., then this would suppress its Amazon ranking (ecause less people are buying it at Amazon) and thus result in higher than estimated sales. It’s not that uncommon a thing. The other point to consider with Charlotte is that it may have moved a lot of discs last minute, with a favorable reaction to the series’ ending.

Now if Charlotte sold 7.5k *without* Amazon-edition sales being reported at all, then it should be around 10k with them, which is a really big underestimation. Again, wouldn’t be unprecedented.

  4. Avatar rederoin says:

If these numbers are correct, then KM S2 drops from 5.1k to 4.3k on my spreadsheets for what I expect its average to be.
That is one hell of a drop.

  5. Avatar Zhou says:

I’m even willing to accept that Overlord was massively overestimated, but Kuroko S3’s oddly big drop is the clearest sign that something went wrong with how they tracked last week’s sales.

  6. Avatar moodie48 says:

I can solve all your answer!

when people found out owarimonogatari was coming they decided to cancel their orders for this seasons anime to wait for owari…..lol jk

  7. Avatar anon says:

You can’t imagine how much I laughed when I opened this page.

If this is the real numbers, I’m going to get really sad for Gakkou Gurashi, the predictions were already kinda low, now it’s just completely dead.

  8. Avatar 37 says:

Woah, charlotte did better than I expected.

And oof, those gatchaman sales. Are you sure those are right?

    • Avatar 37 says:

Oh and at least Haikyuu will sell well, it’s my most anticipated show for next season.

    • something something says:

Gatchaman I’m not /too/ surprised by though it too was significantly overestimated. The usual sequel drop plus the move from a cheap up-front boxset to singles MURDERED its sales. The theory is that the first season, airing on NTV and all, picked up a number of more mainstream buyers who were enticed by the low price. Switching from a boxset (which is what buyers of live action dramas are used to) to singles was a pretty fatal mistake. Even if those singles are somewhat cheap compared to other anime.

  9. Avatar primadog says:

This is worse than brutal, it’s “international tribunal at the Hagues” awful.

    • something something says:

The wait for Soundscan (which apparently comes out on Wednesdays) is painful.

Again, anyone with time, feel free to stalk the threads at http://refugee-chan.mobi/urisure/ and see if it gets posted.

You can also check out http://www.phileweb.com/ranking/bd-top20/373.html and see when they post the 9/21-27 rankings, even though it doesn’t make any sales numbers public.

The theory I think sounds most plausible right now is that, for whatever reason, Amazon sales are missing for series released on 9/25-26. The three tiles released on 9/23 that made the dailies seem to be perfectly fine: Charlotte, Nantai, and Kimiuso all have sales that either seem totally reasonable (Charlotte being storefront heavy and/or moving a lot of units after release day isn’t too shocking) or that are directly in line with previous volumes (Nanatai and Kimiuso didn’t have unrealistic drops).

Meanwhile everything from 9/25-26 was beaten bloody. Dermeas, TLRD2, Overlord, Kinmosa, Gakkou Gurashi, Illya, Kuroko, Seraph, Koufuku, and so on. In some cases sales seem in the realm of sanity, but that’s for low sellers where even a modest percentage drop is small in absolute terms and thus hard to evaluate (like, is Yuki-chan’s 1.8k > 1.4k drop natural or part of this issue? Could go either way).

One good, simple test to see determine if this is true would be if Deremas and/or Overlord rank higher than Charlotte on Soundscan’s rankings. If they do, then this hypothesis is almost certainly correct. While Oricon and Soundscan do differ, they don’t differ *enough* for Deremas or Overlord’s 4.xk to beat Charlotte’s 6.xk BDs purely due to normal differences between the trackers. It would have to be indicative of Oricon missing a significant portion of sales, and would line up with the 9/23 vs 9/25 idea.

      • Avatar Hahalollawl says:

What could/would you do if there was a mistake?

        • something something says:

If it’s as obvious as G Reco ended up being, I’ll use Soundscan’s numebrs for wk1 for everything released on 9/25-26.

And then I’ll cross my fingers and hope to Madokami that this is a stupid one-time hiccup and future weeks and volumes will be unaffected.

If not, this site will become a pretty pointless endeavor pretty quickly!

          • Avatar RapturedReverie says:

I’m hearing that sales have been down all around, just not to this extent. I’d ask the question if more people in Japan have been switching to digital sources with subscription models. This could be having an effect on the physical sales of newer content, if so.

            • something something says:

That would happen a lot more gradually. We had a really solid Spring after all. Anime fans in Japan never had to buy the discs as a prerequisite to see the shows the way Western fans did, so the availability of streaming would not suddenly harm physical media sales. In Japan DVD/BDs have always been the domain of hardcore fans with a collector mentality and they will be very slow to ditch physical media entirely.

      • Avatar Ejc says:

The numbers are public on phileweb. This is where most get the SS numbers on the 2ch thread. You have to look at the html for the BD chart, and you’ll find the SS numbers are actually commented out in the code.

        • something something says:

Ahahaha is that how it’s done? I figured they had a cheap youtaiju-like account people used.

That’s… amazing. Literally hidden by fucking HTML comments. I love that.

      • Avatar primadog says:

One good outcome out of this disaster area, if the theory bears out, is we now know the exact marketshare range Amazon Japan owns in anime sales. That’d come in handy.

While I am putting my hopes in Soundscan, it’s worth noting that they’re far from ideal as a point of comparison. They just happen to be the only other source we’ve got.

If we compare last week’s Soundscan to Oricon on BD, we see some are close and some are way different:

        Oricon / Soundscan / Title
        8751 / 7654 (-12%) – Kekkai Sensen v4
        6009 / 6399 (+6%) – Hibike! Euphonium v3
        4005 / 4203 (+5%) – Non Non Biyori Repeat v1
        4232 / 3783 (-10%) – Show By Rock v4
        3201 / 2715 (-15%) – Haikyuu recap movie
        2311 / 2290 (-1%) – Grisaia no Rakuen v2
        4333 / 2227 (-49%) – Monster Musume v1
        3691 / 2156 (-42%) – Himouto! Umaru-chan v1

The differences are modest but tolerable until you hit Monmusu and Umaru-chan. That is a _huge_ discrepancy between Oricon and Soundscan.

The other problem with Soundscan is its thresholds. 1,607 on BD last week, ouch. it’s so awful because they don’t have a separate anime top 20, everything is jammed into only 20 spots.

So it’s not perfect… but it may at least help us get a better number for a couple series. Overlord, Deremas, and maybe Kurobas at least.

If you are correct in your theory, then perhaps those sales will just be pushed into next week’s data? It could produce some interesting results if so…

        • something something says:

I doubt it will. Oricon has never cared to fix issues before and I don’t think they will now. But if the issue was on Amazon’s end, then I dunno maybe it’s not impossible… but I see them being even less likely to care!

  10. Avatar Marcelo M says:

The amount and size of this time difference is out of the ordinary. If there were any errors, is there the possibility of them disclose a corrected list? There have been some minimally case like this?

Does anyone know how this is impacting on the Japanese forums or channels?

    • something something says:

The JP thread is full of hundreds of comments asking if Soundscan is out because they’re as bewildered as we are.

If Oricon’s past issues are any indication, no they will never publish revised data. Which sucks because it kills any hope of tracking them through the extended rankings. Not good for this many v1s! But if we can get wk1s through Soundscan then wk2+ through Oricon, we shouldn’t miss out on *too* many sales.

Haha that content warning is great. Let’s all hope this is a rare hiccup. I’d be sad if this site stopped because Oricon became useless :-(

  12. Avatar Flyingjetpack says:

This sale is completely brutal. If it’s not a mistake, then there’s no hope for any of the titles over here to get a second season.
This sale list breaks my head, the normal logic (that I personally hate) is that boobs sell, and even more the uncensored kind. SO HOW THE HELL THE MOST FAMOUS ECCHI OF THEM ALL: “TLR DARKNESS S2” MANNAGED TO ONLY GET A PATHETIC 2800 SALE COUNT?!
Many of these titles got a pathetic count compared to how much hype and love there was around those titles on the internet.
It makes me feel like we are missing something, or the counting is completely off. Because such a drastic change (that was reflected in no shape or form on the internet) cannot happen in a span of a single season!

Soundscan numbers are up, and they pretty much confirm what we expected,

For the BD numbers, see http://refugee-chan.mobi/test/read.cgi/urisure/1443570372/942 (they’re in the HTML source, as ejc pointed out).

I’m going to work through these now and see what we’ve got and update the post.

One thing Charlotte’s number really drives home is that Soundscan is AWFUL for underestimated storefront-heavy titles moving at anime specialty retailers. They must have super bad coverage there.

    • Avatar replyingreplier says:

      Deremas still dropping 25% doe.

      • something something says:

Just addressed this in the updated post. It’s down 20% on the previous non-ticket standalone volume, but It’s definitely still missing at least 1k BDs and about 150 DVDs from the report, as it’s presumably missing Aniplex+ in Soundscan.

And this is of course only the standalone disc, G4U should be unaffected and thus its actual drop will be pretty standard. Though if Oricon *never* fixes this and all its wk2+ sales (which should be an additional ~2k over time) are shafted too, then the decrease will look a little sharper.

    • Avatar Anonymous says:

I think Prisma Illya is really unlucky one, missing some Amazon sales in Oricon and missing storefront sales in Soundscan.

  14. something something says:

Post updated, lots of details plus the Soundscan data. Hopefully everything I did to get the numbers is pretty clear.

    Wow, what a week.

The Oricon apocalypse really scared me for a second, especially with those numbers for Kurobasu! Thank you so much for editing the post with the Sound Scan numbers.KuroBasu is back to normal, thank God. I just wish the DVD thresholds were better, ugh.

I have a question though. Is this going to happen with Oricon every time due to the Amazon editions? Or did Amazon/Oricon just mess things up for one day?

“I have a question though. Is this going to happen with Oricon every time due to the Amazon editions? Or did Amazon/Oricon just mess things up for one day?”

Well, that is the big question! It’s important to note that this is actually not caused by the Amazon editions per se. While nearly all the 9/25-26 releases did have Amazon editions, the Code Geass and V Gundam BD boxes did not, but they were similarly affected. This is just Amazon as a whole not reporting, as far as we can tell.

Anyway there’s no way to know. We’ll just have to see what the data looks like next Tuesday. If Symphogear comes in ~7k under estimate, we may be screwed.
