You’re in the big leagues now, Something!
Suprisingly good article.
I don’t know where I should leave this comment, but I think you have Shoukugeki, Yamada, Denpa Kyoushi, and Grisaia listed as Summer shows when they should be Spring shows.
Fixed, thanks.
So is it possible for God Eater to sneak up behind Symphogear and steal the Anime of the Summer title AND be a contender for Anime of the Year?
No, not at all. v2+ Offshoot bundles aren’t ranking anywhere near well enough for that, and the v1 full game bundle wont be counted in the average just as Idolmaster’s wasn’t because the main selling point is the game not the anime. Counting tens of thousands of sales of all the versions of the whole game (not all of which even come with the anime) would totally skew the sales. I think at best it’ll average a few thousand even if all the v2+ Offshoot bundles rank. The non-bundle standalone anime version will sell under 2k.
Eeek, too bad. So this year will be a contest between UtaPri, F/SN, and Owari? Any other possible contenders? I think UtaPri will nab this one though.
Yeah any of those three could potentially take it. They’ll all end up fairly close to one another, but I’m guessing it’ll be UBW > Utapri > owari.
Utapri could be #1 if it gets a third event ticket in the last vol, but I don’t think there were any plans for that.
Oh, I thought the Volume 6 event ticket will be a sure thing. Forgot where I read about it though. So with two of the three top bets for #1 being part of franchises experiencing a downward trend in terms of DVD/BD units sold, can you say that this year will be relatively underwhelming compared to previous years?
Well we can do a comparison of the biggest sellers for the last decade. 2015 seems pretty good when just considering TV Anime above 30K average, but when you get to the bigger sellers of 40K average, it is underwhelming compared to the previous years. The last 4 years (2011~2014) has seen at least one 40K average seller.

Yeah, looking at that it’s definitely clear that we’ll be heading to a relatively weaker close. Doesn’t help too that no anime originals or franchises that received TV adaptations for the first time truly broke out like wildfire.
Maybe this will just be a year like 2010 then? Charlotte tried to be 2015’s Angel Beats but that’s not going to happen. Maybe this season will produce a dark horse that Otaku go crazy for. One Punch Man looks good but that type of show probably wont do it, needs a moe Saber-esque character like the fate series.
Aren’t Saitama and Genos enough these days? Tsk. *sobs*
Only a 40 something difference between the two at the top. Thats pretty shocking. I guess we’ll never know if it added more than that.
At this point it’s a safe bet Utapri will overtake UBW s2 with anther extended ranking appearance, but UBW also had maybe ~450 in yearly per-series sales we can’t add because we don’t know how much was s1 and how much was s2. On the other hand UBW has the advantage of all its reporting concentrated in one release while Utapri will drop below thresholds more easily as it’s split. Basically, it’s a tie! But it is really cool to see how close they’ve ended up.
Recent gloomy article on disc-sales in Japan from ANN is here:
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2016-03-21/japanese-bd-dvd-sales-down-5.1-percent-from-2014-anime-bd-dvd-sales-down-6.9-percent/.100044
If you look at the source data it says that in 2015 there were 11,699,832 discs sold under category “Animation for Grown-ups Domestic”. How does that match up with the data shown here?
The data here is always going to be way less than the reports from the industry because 1) I don’t report all shows and the industry’s definition is broader [I don't track OVAs or movies for one!], 2) Oricon is never the full picture, they don’t track all stores, 3) the Oricon data we do get is always limited to the top 100-300 each week, and 4) the industry would presumably be defining sales as units shipped, even if they never sold (or sold at large discounts way later).
Just out of interest, what is your number?
My number won’t line up with JVA or other industry reports, because when they say “discs sold in 2015” then mean regardless of release date. A disc of some Anpanman release from 2012 that someone bought on June 1 2015 would be a 2015 sale. For me (if I even tracked something like Anpanman), it would be 2012e. For a more relevant example, all Osomatsu-san sales will count as being for a 2015 show by this site’s reckoning, but calendar-wise they’re all being released in 2016 and will be in the 2016 JVA report, not 2015.
Basically I’m interested in how anime does by season. So it’s apples and oranges comparisons for the most part.
But if I look at the current sales data for every TV anime disc I track that had a release date in a given year (regardless of whether all their sales happened that year), that comes to:
2015: 3,560,926
2014: 3,992,916
2013: 4,333,060
2012: 3,666,594
2011: 3,688,405
2010: 3,469,923
2013 was a super strong year for home video by any measure, whether just the stuff I track or the animation home video market as a whole. That skews reports about the recent decline. The decline is real (obviously, physical media sales are down across the board) but 2013 is a misleading baseline.
Oh and regarding the 2015 numbers in particular, well, 2014 had Frozen. That’s included in the animation numbers and having that go away (most of its sales were in 2014) is clearly going to make a big difference.
When you compare the category “Animation for Grown-ups Domestic” you can see that is down 10% year-on-year. I believe Frozen is not counted there.
It depends which number and which report source you’re talking about. For the whole “animation” category, Frozen would be a big deal. But for the JVA Domestic Animation for Grown-ups, no it would not be included.
Something translated previous year’s JVA data in this post:
https://www.someanithing.com/3253
http://www.jva-net.or.jp/report/genre_2015.pdf
So the relevent category:
2013 -> 2014 -> 2015
¥74,580 -> ¥64,352m -> ¥58,512m
volume:
15,706,682 -> 12,976,748 -> 11,699,832
Both figures are below level not seen since 2004, which is rather alarming.
You actually have nice English version here:

Oh, nice, will file that somewhere safe!
For the life of me, I can’t find that 49 billion yen fire ANN/Anime Anime quoted from the source. It ought to be ¥58,512m. Did they just screwed up?
> The general Japanese animation market is down 6.9% from the previous year, with total sales of 49.082 billion yen (about US$440.948 million). The market has now sustained a two-year consecutive decline. The last time that the market garnered sales below 50 billion yen was in 2004, where the market earned 44.091 billion yen (about US$396.161 million).
Yeah really not sure where anyone gets ¥49bn from. Clearly says ¥58bn in the report.
58 is wrong too as you should count together “Animation for Grown-ups Domestic” and “Animation for Kids Domestic” to get to the total anime number.
I was specifically talking about the “grown-ups” category, since that’s what we focus on here, but yes the bit in Primadog’s quote from the article seems to be the whole market which should be ¥65bn domestic.
I was wondering when the 2015 report would come out. I’ll probably take a look at doing the updated post this coming weekend.
is one punch man sales about ¥365,784,000??
Yep, you did the math right. It just added some additional discs in this morning’s latest report so now the total is ¥367,730,000.
shokugeki no souma sales looks bad
how did he get 2nd season?
Video disc sales aren’t always the most important thing, and sometimes aren’t important at all. It depends on the show: what companies are funding it, what they each expect out of it, what kind of contracts they signed, etc.
For an extreme example, look at the long-running mainstream kids’ TV shows like Pokemon or Meitantei Conan, even Naruto and One Piece. Their normal TV volumes sell basically nothing but that just doesn’t matter for those shows.
The committee structure for a show like Souma is different from a mainstream juggernaut like Conan of course, but similar principles can still apply.
i have a question about the filler,Does the idea of filler comes from the studio or from the Committee production?
Symphogear just keeps growing. It’s gone from 5,045 to 8,701 to 14,229.
Seasons 4 and 5 coming! Though we still aren’t sure if the original main cast will be the main cast in those seasons or if they will be background senpais to some new girls. I hope it is the same cast.
I’ll take anything as long as it has Kirika and Shirabe, the clearly best characters in the show.
Kirika and Shirabe as the main characters with some new girls under them would be fun though honestly I love Hibiki too. It’s a great ensemble cast.
Chris is my best girl, Tsubasa is my second best and Hibiki is my third best. And I’m sure you’ve noticed that the 14,229 average for Symphogear GX is enough for the series to rank as not just the best selling anime of the summer but the 10th best selling anime for ALL of 2015.
I see ‘non non biyori repeat’ in this list but not ‘non non biyori’….idk maybe u forgot to add or I cant see it or wut :P
This is 2015, Non Non Biyori season one came out in 2013.
Oh sorry I kept seeing it camw in 2015 as well :P
