Oricon hasn’t released the full ranking for last week yet. I expect they’ll do both Biz releases on Thursday, since it’s managed separately from Youtaiju. Believe this happened last year or the year before.

In the meantime, I’ve done the first test of re-scraping the full DVD and BD rankings from the Oricon website and merging them into my spreadsheet with the data I’ve recorded this far. It was successful, so I’ll be able to do this going forward. I’m still holding off on making any big updates to this site until I finish going through the DVDs though. About 8000 to go…

Fall update:
Yuyuyu v1 adds 1363 BDs, total 9,588. One more week to 10k?

Crossange v1 adds 734 BDs, total 7,912.

Amaburi v1 adds 1286 BDs, total 7,732. Not the v1 I expected to hit 4 digits in its wk2 due to its Amazon front-loading, but a pleasant surprise. Still expecting no more than 5.xk for v2 tho, depends on how many people bought v1 just for the box.

Shirobako v1 adds 574 BDs, total 6,299.

G Reco v1 adds 623 BDs, total 5,324.

Grisaia v1 adds 617 BDs, total 4,198.

Madan no Ou v1 adds 368 BDs, total 3,540.

OreTwi v1 adds 423 BDs, total 2,947.

Summer update:
SAO II v3 adds 1478/412, total 18,500.

Nozaki-kun v4 adds 556 BDs, total 8,841. 11k with 2 vols to go, also looking like a very likely 10k. Just needs 8k each for v5 and v6, less if some small additions elsewhere like more v4 data.

Aldnoah v4 adds 390 BDs, total 7,112.

Kuroshitsuji s3 v5, final volume, adds 318 BDs, total 5,315. Series average: 6,696.

Prima Illya v4 adds 901 BDs, total 4,758. Should be a DVD estimate for wk1 too, but it’s not included in my Oricon scrape… no single scrape is ever perfect due to Oricon never properly returning every page each time (at least some pages always fail) so maybe I’ll pick it up next time?

Hanayamata v4 adds 439 BDs, total 2,636.

Past seasons:
Love Live! s2 v4 adds 329, total 51,482 in wk15, meaning it added 1456 in wks10-14.
v5 adds 332, total 47,279 meaning it added 1511 in wks 6-9.
v6 adds 568, total 46,301 in wk7.
v7, final volume, adds 5678, total 57,672 in wk2. Not the 10k+ wk2 I expected. Series average: 60,885.

Haikyuu!! v6 adds 372/395, total 19,759 in wk3.

Mahouka v6 adds 708 BDs, total 10,332. 11.9k avg after 6 of 10, 10k seems like a done deal now.

Jojo s2 v6, final volume, adds 320 BDs, total 10,266 in wk3. Forgot that in the 12 discs we were aware of, 6 were already slated as part of the Egypt-hen season three. Therefore, series average: 11,931. Next six discs are season three for Winter 2015. And this also puts Jojo s2 on the 10k list.

Mekakushi v11 adds 458/452, total 6,121.
v12 adds 467/475, total 6,187. Series average: 7,488.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Strike Witches OVA v1 adds 343 BDs, total 19,188 in wk4, meaning it added 632 BDs in wk3.

Gintama BD Box v1 adds 373, total 7,167.

Surprised Shirobako still able to get in top 20 even it out of stock til Jan 7

  2. Johnson says:

Uh is it just me or did you mess up that summary stuff beneath the lists? It seems for shows like Cross Ange and Amagi you added this weeks sales + total sales when total sales should already have included this weeks new numbers (going by last weeks lists). So what I’m getting at is when you did the season updates you may have counted this week’s numbers twice…

    • something something says:

The difference is DVDs from last week. They didn’t rank on the DVD 100/DVD Animation 30, but we can deduce the sales by other means, which is why they look to be higher than last week’s BDs + this week’s BDs. You can check the post comments (as in user comments below the post, not my ranking comments) from last week for some of the numbers. But for example Amagi last week was 5,858 BDs/588 DVDs, plus 1,286 BDs this week = 7,732.

  3. Anonymouse says:

Meanwhile SoundScan reports over 8k for G-Reco
    http://d.2chnews.biz/news/1465298_660

    • something something says:

Soundscan is almost always higher, sometimes quite a lot so. Nobody uses them as a source, though.

    • ChocoBar9 says:

      BD(SS→オリコン)

I’m not even sure what the hell is going on anymore.

      • something something says:

Have to suggest not thinking too hard about SoundScan! SS covers a fraction of the retailers Oricon does, so they’re doing a lot of estimating based on a smaller data set.

But yes, this is without a doubt an unusually large discrepancy, and SS’s number is a lot closer to what we’d have expected. But if Oricon made a mistake we should know fairly soon, because v2 sales would presumably be a lot higher than v1 and that would be a major tip-off. The most realistic circumstance that could have resulted in this would be if Amazon’s edition weren’t counted at all, either because Amazon neglected to report or Oricon neglected to include it. But that’s pure speculation, no way to know.

For now, we use Oricon across the board for consistency so I’m accepting it’s v1 number.

    “Prima Illya v4 adds 901 BDs, total 3,857. ”
    Should actually add it :P

    • something something says:

This is why I hate overly large spreadsheets, I have to turn off automatic formula calculation and don’t always remember to recalculate.

I feel like I need a new computer again, one specifically designed to calculate excel spreadsheets more quickly…

  5. Anonymous says:

Is there a way to estimate what Love Live’s avg would be if we try to factor out that stupid huge vol1 boost because of all the bonuses it came with?

    • something something says:

All the non-ticket volumes are pretty consistent in sales, so just delete v1 and v7 and take the average of v2-6.

In other words, it’s a 50k show almost exactly (49,994 at the moment), with a 10-12k event ticket bump from two event tickets.

Maybe say 51-52k or so without tickets, assuming v1 would have sold a little more even without the ticket (but just, like, half what it actually sold).

  6. Anon says:

    >Mekaku: 7,376.

For all the talk and discussion about the disc sales of this show, it became SHAFT’s best seller since Negima eight years ago (without taking into account SHAFT’s big three).

  7. anonymous says:

Is the box really that big of an incentive for Amaburi? I mean it’s not an event ticket and the only usefulness of the box would be to store the subsequent volumes. Would it be fair to say people who bought Amaburi vol. 1 plan on completing the whole set with all 6 BDs so we shouldn’t expect too much of a drop for the next volumes? Additionally, are there any event tickets for this series in later volumes?

    • something something says:

The box matters, but not necessarily as much as an event ticket. Of course some event tickets don’t matter at all.

No tickets for Amaburi as far as I know.

Take what I say about Amaburi v2 with a bit of a grain of salt. I always err on the side of lowballing shows I like and highballing(?) things I don’t. Maybe it’ll more realistically hold closer to 6-6.5k, but I don’t want to set myself up for disappointment!

    • checkit says:

They can put other anime BDs in that box too if they decide not to buy all the volumes

  8. Endiem says:

Congrats to Yuyuyu and Mahouka, I’m happy to see both doing well. And wow to Love Live’s numbers. I know it has a strong fanbase, but to average $60k for a second season is impressive regardless.

  9. Anonymous says:

So Shirobako vol 1 says on Amazon that it ships in 1-2 months. Yet at the same time it’s about to drop of the top 100 ranking. Seems very odd that it would have such a long delay for a seemingly relatively small amount of people who are ordering it. It’s rather curious how much if any that Shirobako vol 1 can end up adding down the line.

    • something something says:

It’s normal to drop after release, especially if it’s not available for order. People who still want it and who didn’t get their orders in already will go order somewhere else.

  10. Anonymous says:

So, any idea for Amabri’s 2nd volume?

  11. something something says:

    Updated for the full list.

  12. Zhou says:

So Initial D: Legend 1 only sold 8601 copies in the first two weeks after its release? I wonder if it would have done better if there was also a DVD release. Unfortunately, it seems to me that this big-screen reboot of the franchise will amount to nothing more than a trilogy of films adapting the beginning of the story, just like Berserk’s.

  13. Ejc says:

For JoJo Stardust Crusaders, wouldn’t it make sense to split it into Stardust Crusaders and then Stardust Crusaders Egypt-hen? There is a gap of 4 months between Crusaders Vol.6 release and Egypt-hen Vol.1 release. The BD/DVD wiki and 2ch are also thinking of keeping these separate as well.

    • something something says:

I didn’t even know they’d already solicited the season 3 discs with season 2. I guess that explains why I didn’t have a release date for v7 yet (well that and I haven’t skimmed for new release dates in a while).

Though looking at the MSRPs, it makes sense and suddenly this conversation feels familiar, I recall discussing it with some people way back when before SC was confirmed to be split and not four cour straight. So yeah I’ll split them, 11,931 average for Jojo s2.

  14. AnimePhoenix says:

Good to see Kuroshitsuji BoC holding up in sales. BoC was wonderful. I’d definitely welcome another season. Gekkan Shoujo also doing well, that’s good to see. Haikyuu!! also doing really well.
