This post will list the box office revenues for anime movies originating from TV anime, specifically late night (K-ON!, Strike Witches, etc) and some prime time (Evangelion, Nichigo slot, etc) TV anime. I now also cover original movies and more mainstream/family fare such as Ghibli, Doraemon, Meitantei Conan, Pokemon, One Piece, Naruto, etc., though only from 2012 onward.

Note: # of weekends – box office rankings are measured after the weekends and movies start on weekends – can be misleading. Most movies only appear a few times in the normal rankings, but later reports cover a longer period of time. Sometimes this is to the end of the theatrical run, sometimes it’s just random points throughout.

Sources for older films are a mix of yearly lists on MAL/ANN/Yaraon, while more recent films are tracked while in theaters via BunkaTsuhin, Chinematoday, Mantanweb, and particularly this World of KJ thread, as well as Box Office Mojo as a source of last resort. It won’t be complete for older films because anime movies usually don’t rank highly and it’s hard to find accurate information for anything below about ¥400m from just the Year End lists.

Not all movies on the list have equally good sources; Mojo alone would have Fate UBW at ¥35m (one weekend), but the mid-year list from animeanime.biz has a total (after 5 months) of ¥280m. This is a fairly extreme example, but it means that the above can’t always be compared directly with complete fairness. Use of Mojo is avoided where possible because their strange currency conversions result in incorrect (still close, but incorrect) numbers.

I know that they are not related and definitely different, but between Osomatsu-san and Your Name which success was more surprising?

something says:

I… guess Kimi no Na wa? If only by the sheer scale of it, and the fact that there was just no precedent whatsoever. With late night TV anime it’s a bit less shocking if an original series gets among the top of all time. Becoming one of the top grossing films in history also requires mobilizing a heck of a lot more of the populace than averaging 60k discs for a TV series. Instead of tens of thousands, we’re talking millions.

For the last two weekends:

Kimi no Na wa. = ¥20,897,904,500 wk17
Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni = ¥708,376,720 wk6
Monster Strike = ¥554,985,300 wk2
Kancolle Movie = ¥290,177,800 wk3
Kuroko no Basuke Movie 3: Winter Cup Soushuuhen = ¥80,456,200 wk2
Suki ni Naru Sono Shunkan wo.: Kokuhaku Jikkou Iinkai = ¥47,759,680 wk1 on 70 screens

Don’t think I’m going to track the third Youkai Watch movie. It’s a mix of animation and live action and the trailer looks pretty heavily live action, and the live action seems to be the whole marketing gimmick. But it did ¥608,033,100 wk1 if you’re interested.

3. Whocares says:

Hey stalker, do you think the final Kizu film will gross 500 million yen?

• Whocares says:

gross over*

• something
something says:

“Stalker” refers to Amazon Ranking Stalker, which is http://rankstker.net/index_news.cgi, not this site.

It may reach ¥500m, but less wouldn’t be surprising considering the last report we have for Part II is ¥500m and presumably this one will drop again.

As with any films in roughly this box office range or less, it depends a lot on how thorough box office reporting is. Many titles leave the top 10 and never get reported on again, so we have to hope we get some news releases about it once it drops from the top 10 after, like, 2-3 weekends. We may not find out anything more until the BD gets solicited, and then only if it did well enough to warrant a press release or marketing blurb.

Where do you get your info on box office in Japan? I usually use Box Office Mojo (I track movies boxoffice as a hobby) which only lists Kizu II at ¥405,064,044 in Japan and ¥12,291,178 in Korea. Your source is probably more accurate but BOM uses charts past top 10 so I was just confused. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/intl/?page=&country=JP&wk=2016W34&id=_fKIZUMONOGATARIII01)

• CNL899 says:

(Ive only used it to track US and Chinese releases mostly so I’m not sure how accurate its Japanese data is but pretty much all the box office podcasts and news sites use it as gospel)

• something
something says:

Box Office Mojo is the source of last resort for Japan, to be used only when nothing else is available. Their coverage is really spotty (new releases often missed completely or show up weeks late, sometimes entire weekends are simply skipped), and sometimes their data makes no sense at all (showing thresholds as low as like ¥50,000 but missing titles that clearly beat that). They also peg a series’ entire run to its opening weekend exchange rate and can sometimes be way off depending on how exchange rates have fluctuated. Sometimes they’re on par with other sources (lately their numbers mostly line up) but it’s kind of a crap shoot.

The preferred source is this thread: http://www.worldofkj.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=55322

Which I believe uses a Bunkatsushin subscription (or some other site, I forget) for its weekend Actuals.

But once titles drop out of the weekend rankings, you just have to hope some news story or bit of PR or a product description in the BD solicitation mentions an updated number. Sometimes official websites or official blogs also post updates (Garupan’s blog did this quite regularly). And sometimes the updates come in year-end lists.

In Kizu II’s case, the ¥500m number comes from this article, which states “興行収入5億円を超える大ヒットを記録している本作。” Even that is unfortunately vague, “over ¥500 million” could mean, like, ¥599m for all we know.

• CNL899 says:

I figured it was something like that. Its definately reliable for US releases (its the source for The Economist and WallStreet Journal and stuff) but foreign releases are less so.

• Whocares says:

So all 3 movies combined will probably make less money than the k-on movie (¥1.9 b) right?
RIP, Kizumonogatari. :/

• something
something says:

At least as of the reports we’ll get, ¥1.8bn is likely the best it can do. I wouldn’t say it’s a RIP but it’s certainly not what the franchise could have done 4-5 years ago.

But looking at runtime is instructive. Total runtime will be about 3:15, clocking it in at only about half an hour longer than Haruhi Shoushitsu. Except it’ll be bringing in more than twice Shoushitsu’s box office. I’m sure there are inefficiencies with booking theaters three times, producing three separate BDs, marketing it three times, etc so it’s not an even comparison. Particularly because Kizu is on many more screens (108 vs 24 opening), which means a much lower per-screen take. But I doubt anyone would say Shoushitsu was a failure and Kizu is going to bring in a lot more money than that for roughly comparable runtime.

All in all, nobody is losing money on Kizu, not even close. But when we stop and think about how this easily could have been a ¥3-4bn trilogy in the series’ bigger days, well… it’s a big “what if?”.

Kimi no Na wa. = ¥21,327,699,900 wk18
Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni = ¥820,190,050 wk7

The legs on Kono Sekai are pretty amazing. That’s a >17x multiplier on its opening weekend now, and it’s an increase on last weekend. The only original stand-alone films ranked higher since 2012 are Kokosake (¥1bn) and the Ghibli/Hosoda/Shinkai trio who are all off in their own world. (Edit: Oops nevermind, it’s actually a manga adaptation)

7. decday says:

>original stand-alone films
But that is adaptation of a manga

Original Popin’ q with over 200 theaters release by Toei seems died
Children don’t just watch original, drama and teenage sol seems like one that sold, and good review and I see that using mainstream actors as voice actor add the value for promotion too.

Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni = ¥936,991,310 wk8

Note, this is last weekend, so it only covers through January 1. New Year’s week is a strong movie week, so they’re both higher by now, and Kono Sekai has crossed ¥1bn. If it doesn’t make the top 10 this weekend I’ll just use one of the articles talking about its ¥1bn and update as such.

Those are the estimates still. There was another set of estimates posted later which has it lower. The current three day weekend estimate is ¥135m, but we should have final numbers soon. Part II opened to ¥175m so this would be another drop (not unexpected).

I hope Kizu beats Madoka’s Eternal gross atleast…

• Progeusz says:

It has less than zero chance of doing that. Monogatari franchise has given up on Kizu movie so it could sell more BDs of other seasons. Kizu could only be greatly successful if it was released when planned, back in 2012.

• hpulley says:

I agree with the zero chance of surpassing Madoka but where have they said they’re giving up on the movies to sell more BDs of other seasons? I don’t think that makes any sense. They aren’t making any other seasons of Monogatari at this point in time and none of the old seasons have shown up in rankings so I don’t believe any of their effort at all is going into marketing Monogatari other than Kizumonogatari. That marketing isn’t working well but it is the focus of the Monogatari marketing campaign.

Most of the people that work on Monogatari are working on things other than Monogatari right now.

• Progeusz says:

>but where have they said they’re giving up on the movies to sell more BDs of other seasons
I never said they said it so why are you asking me this question?

I simply described their actions. Kizumonogatari was planned for 2012 (or was it even late 2011?). However the producers decided to put Kizumonogatari off and instead focused on animating other parts of Monogatari franchise. They have clearly analyzed the situation and decided it would be more profitable approach. Even when they saw each entry in the franchise selling less than previous one they were still postponing Kizu, knowing full well it would decrease its sales. Saying they gave up on it being a huge hit in order to focus on selling more BDs of other parts seems accurate in my opinion.

Well, I still don’t see a total for Kizu III that includes its opening Friday so I’ve added it as the Sat-Sun ¥86,718,100 for now. It should *probably* be around ¥130m for its three day opening.

We’ll see if it even makes the top 10 this weekend… estimates imply it may not. Ouch.

Kimi no Na wa. = ¥23,225,009,200 wk21
Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni = ¥1,341,737,390 wk10

No Kizumonogatari in the top 10 in its second weekend… we may never get another report about it. Yikes. (Ignore the fact that Mojo has some very low-grossing stuff without Kizu present. Obviously it did more than ¥4007… Mojo is very strange past #10.)

Actuals from KJ are up and they’re the same as BOM. BOM must be using the same source now.

And yep, no Kizu Part III. It may go down on this list as barely 1/10th of Part I… which is obviously wrong, because the data is woefully incomplete. But nonetheless, the drop has been brutal. From ¥800m to ¥500m to, honestly, I doubt more than ¥400m at best. And on a chart it’ll look like ¥86m… just keep in mind that only covers 2 days of its entire run and doesn’t even include its opening Friday because the reporting is so bad.
