This post will list the box office revenues for anime movies originating from TV anime, specifically late night (K-ON!, Strike Witches, etc) and some prime time (Evangelion, Nichigo slot, etc) TV anime. I now also cover original movies and more mainstream/family fare such as Ghibli, Doraemon, Meitantei Conan, Pokemon, One Piece, Naruto, etc., though only from 2012 onward.

Note: # of weekends – box office rankings are measured after the weekends and movies start on weekends – can be misleading. Most movies only appear a few times in the normal rankings, but later reports cover a longer period of time. Sometimes this is to the end of the theatrical run, sometimes it’s just random points throughout.

Sources for older films are a mix of yearly lists on MAL/ANN/Yaraon, while more recent films are tracked while in theaters via BunkaTsuhin, Chinematoday, Mantanweb, and particularly this World of KJ thread, as well as Box Office Mojo as a source of last resort. It won’t be complete for older films because anime movies usually don’t rank highly and it’s hard to find accurate information for anything below about ¥400m from just the Year End lists.

Not all movies on the list have equally good sources; Mojo alone would have Fate UBW at ¥35m (one weekend), but the mid-year list from animeanime.biz has a total (after 5 months) of ¥280m. This is a fairly extreme example, but it means that the above can’t always be compared directly with complete fairness. Use of Mojo is avoided where possible because their strange currency conversions result in incorrect (still close, but incorrect) numbers.

Long as we can get 1-2 more reports, Kurobas willbe in the ¥1bn club. Would only be the 7th late night franchise to manage that. Not bad.

    • Kaoru says:

For Kurobas, 1 billion yen is pretty much guaranteed at this point. Probably by early week 9, that’ll be my guess, and with the final number coming in somewhere around 1.2 billion at the end of its run.
Its box office for week 6-8 were depressed/held back somewhat after Shochiku announced (at the end of week 5) that they’ll bring back the much sought-after week-4&5 attendance bonuses (reprint of the collectible coasters, after rampant complaints of insufficient supply) starting from week 9 onward. The number of theaters screening will also be increased in week 9 (after cutbacks in week 6&7), which is why I think there’s a good chance its box office numbers could pick up rather considerably in week 9&10 after a three weeks lull (week 6-8).

It’s really unfortunate that Last Game is not getting the 4DX treatment, otherwise the final box office numbers could’ve been even higher. Saw it myself in Tokyo three weeks ago, and it’s exactly the kind of superpowered action-packed film that is especially conducive to the 4DX experience (but hey, at least Shochiku was nice enough to print more coasters).
I could be wrong but I think Kurobas current run rate is also stronger than that of Garupan’s (which hit the 1 billion yen mark only in week 11), that is of course before the high-ticket pricing of 4DX massively boosted the latter’s box office total.

        • something something says:

While Garupan benefited a lot from 4DX, the sheer longevity of its box office run is the biggest contributor to its success. People had to want to see the movie over and over again over a more than year-long run. If it just got a couple weeks of 4DX boost, it would have come nowhere near its current gross.

          • Kaoru says:

I would think the introduction of 4DX contributed a lot to the longevity of Garupan’s box office run?
I’ve personally seen Kurobas Last Game twice but if the film distributor were to start offering 4DX, I might consider making two more trips to the theater? At this stage the attendance’s mostly repeat viewers anyway.
We probably don’t have a clean breakdown of what portion of Garupan’s 2.45 billion yen box office came from 4DX, but I’m guessing it’s most likely close to half or even more than that?

            • Ejc says:

The 4DX boost started at ¥1,132,433,064 (92 day point). It purely got to 2.45 billion yen because it ran in the cinemas for so long (it ran for 374+ days). When Love Live! Movie got to 2.86 billion yen, that was after 202 days, while GaruPan was around 2.2 billion yen at that same point in time.

            • something something says:

I think we’re making similar points but just emphasizing different things. Basically my point is that Garupan was a highly unusual box office run, so comparing its performance at any given point in time to any other film’s at the same point as a guide to how said other film could do if it ran longer/had (or had more) 4DX could be very misleading. It’s almost but not quite a Catch-22: you could say Garupan was back-loaded because it ran so long, but I think it’s better to say it ran so long because it was so back-loaded. Theaters only keep running a film if it keeps making money after all.

Do you think the box office numbers for the new Free! recap movie may indicate that the original content movie coming in the fall may not do so hot at the box office?

    • something something says:

While it’s not a ringing endorsement or whatever, I wouldn’t read too much into it personally. Probably doesn’t say too much about how an original film would do.

      Updated, thanks.

Also reminds me that after all this time we’ve still only got opening weekend numbers for Kizu III. Yeesh.

@Something, I know it’s too late to correct this buuut according to Madoka’s Japanese wiki, the first film grossed 590 million yen and the second film grossed 560 million yen. Or maybe I’m wrong?

It’s never too late to get more complete info. It cites as a source Cinema Junpou, which is a movie-focused magazine that’s been around since 1919, so I’d say that sounds reputable enough. It’s also only a very small change from the existing numbers so it looks reasonable enough. Updated, thanks.

  6. something something says:

Speaking of CineJun, Ultimatemegax pointed out that the first Kyoukai no Kanata film is listed as ¥140m so that’s also been updated.

I was momentarily very confused to see this ¥3,350,000,000 number for Sword Art Online, but it’s actually the worldwide gross, not just Japan. The article does also give an updated Japan number though: ¥2,503,140,460 on 1,758,928 admissions as of 5/24, so I’ll update the post for that.

Still, ¥850m internationally worldwide is a lot more than a late night anime film would normally expect.

    • Ejc says:

Kind of expected, considering Sword Art Online had around 1700 screens outside of Japan. Compare that to Love Live, which still managed around 150 million yen (100 million yen+ was from South Korea) outside of Japan, with only 80 screens in comparison. Not sure how Madoka Magica did outside of Japan, but I assume it had more screens than Love Live did.

    • something something says:

Updated, thanks. I put #weeks as “15+” since that’s the minimum number of weeks it needed to rank to close in “March”, whatever weekend in March that happened to be.
