This post will list the box office revenues for anime movies originating from TV anime, specifically late night (K-ON!, Strike Witches, etc) and some prime time (Evangelion, Nichigo slot, etc) TV anime. I now also cover original movies and more mainstream/family fare such as Ghibli, Doraemon, Meitantei Conan, Pokemon, One Piece, Naruto, etc., though only from 2012 onward.

Note: # of weekends – box office rankings are measured after the weekends and movies start on weekends – can be misleading. Most movies only appear a few times in the normal rankings, but later reports cover a longer period of time. Sometimes this is to the end of the theatrical run, sometimes it’s just random points throughout.

Sources for older films are a mix of yearly lists on MAL/ANN/Yaraon, while more recent films are tracked while in theaters via BunkaTsuhin, Chinematoday, Mantanweb, and particularly this World of KJ thread, as well as Box Office Mojo as a source of last resort. It won’t be complete for older films because anime movies usually don’t rank highly and it’s hard to find accurate information for anything below about ¥400m from just the Year End lists.

Not all movies on the list have equally good sources; Mojo alone would have Fate UBW at ¥35m (one weekend), but the mid-year list from animeanime.biz has a total (after 5 months) of ¥280m. This is a fairly extreme example, but it means that the above can’t always be compared directly with complete fairness. Use of Mojo is avoided where possible because their strange currency conversions result in incorrect (still close, but incorrect) numbers.

    Ancien and the Magic Tablet (Japanese: Hirune Hime: Shiranai Watashi no Monogatari) is new anime movie, I see you missed it

      Oh, thanks. Will add it. This is why translated/localized titles drive me nuts… I always know stuff by its original title.

  2. Agafin says:

    Hi everyone. So I have a few questions to ask if you don’t mind. First, is there any chance for the SAO movie to top The LL one to become the highest grossing late night anime movie? I don’t remember that movie reaching ¥2b as fast as SAO is about to. Though I do remember it having a pretty long tail all the way to its Home video release, which I’m not sure SAO can match.

    Also, @something, do you too feel like The Madoka movie somewhat underperformed in retrospect? When looking at DVD/BD sales, movies like Garupan, SAO and even LL shouldn’t have so easily beaten it. Though I’m not sure if some advantages those movies (like overpriced 4DX screenings, fan greetings etc) or the fact that Madoka’s reporting is incomplete (correct me if I’m wrong) might explain that.

    And finally, do you know when we can expect Kimi no Na wa to be available on Home video? It was released like seven months ago and has understandably ran out of steam. I’m kind of interested in seeing whether its DVD/BD sales can reach the heights of Frozen and Spirited Away.

      We don’t know what kind of legs SAO will have, but it seems like a long shot. It’ll need to keep packing on the giveaways and not lose theaters to other films over this spring break period. It won’t get a late 4DX boost, because it’s had 4DX since its 2nd or 3rd weekend. I think it can pass Garupan but there’s still a ways to go after that to claim #1.

      “Also, @something, do you too feel like The Madoka movie somewhat underperformed in retrospect?”

      Nah. For one the real number is believed to be closer to ¥2.2-2.3bn based on ticket counts, but we never got official reports that would let us update its number here. It was also pre-4DX, so it didn’t get a boost from that like Garupan did. As for disc sales, they don’t track all that closely with box office gross. Two films that perform similarly in one of the two ways may perform wildly differently in the other.

      “And finally, do you know when we can expect Kimi no Na wa to be available on Home video?”
      If that UK release for Oct ends up being legit, it should be out in Japan a few months earlier than that. But nothing has been announced.

      I wouldn’t expect it to come remotely close to the millions that Frozen or Sen to Chihiro have sold. I can honestly see it “only” maybe selling a couple hundred thousand, say 300k. I’m not sure it has the appeal to nostalgia and kids that drives endless Totoro or Sen to Chihiro sales. But we’ll see!

    SAO has also taken the record for fastest late-night Anime Movie to reach 2 billion yen at 32 days (it took 11 days to reach 1 billion yen):

    For comparison purposes, it took Love Live Movie 43 days to do so, 3rd Madoka 67 days to do so, Girls und Panzer 185 days to do so.

    Looks like it has a high chance of reaching at least 2.5 billion yen and passing Girls und Panzer, but will it have a long enough tail to pass Love Live Movie and even reach the elusive 3 billion yen milestone?

      Not that I’ve seen. Here are the numbers for its opening weekend, so it might have been below the ¥45,616,620 threshold. I think it opened on a Friday, which could have lowered its Sat-Sun take, and the weekend top 10 is purely based on Sat-Sun.

    Doraemon = ¥2,646,925,600 wk4
    Precure = ¥384,988,500 wk2

    Kimi no Na wa. = ¥24,786,911,900 wk31, being tracked by Corpse even tho outside of the top 10.

    Sword Art Online = ¥2.15bn – tracked in the 2017 top-grossing list a few posts down. The Spring Break rush pushed SAO out of the top 10t, so it remains to be seen if it’ll hold enough screens to come back once these movies cool off and weekend thresholds drop. This puts it ahead of Madoka’s official number (though not quite yet the ¥2.2-2.3bn it really did) and only ¥300m behind Garupan.
