Stupidly low thresholds for a Tuesday.
Summer update:
P4GA v3 sells 6037/1470, total 7,507.
v2 adds 240 BDs, total 9,552 in wk6, meaning it added 228 in wks4-5. That’s an unexpected reappearance.
Sailor Moon v2 sells 2,731 BDs, DVD to release in a month. Already down 25% in wk1 BDs from v1.
v1 sells 431 DVDs, total 4,478 with its BDs last month. With the insanely low thresholds I suppose RE BD ranking isn’t totally impossible…? [Edit: Okay, nope, the world spins as usual, no REs ranking.]
SAO II v1 adds 303 BDs, total 21,515.
Blade Dance v2 adds 182 BDs, total 1,920.
Spring update:
Love Live! s2 v2 adds 201, total 55,741 in wk17, meaning it added 195 in wk16.
v3 adds 196, total 49,575 in wk12, meaning it added 176 in wk11.
v4 adds 368, total 49,457 in wk8, meaning it added 198 in wk7.
v5 adds 1052, total 44,254 in wk3.
Wixoss v2 adds 179 BDs, total 4,617 in wk4, meaning it added 261 in wk3. This is a hell of an example of what a difference thresholds make! v1 only ranked once, and only on BD. v2 has ranked four times on BD and once on DVD, and has technically increased 45.7% over v1. But I think we can safely assume it hasn’t actually sold more than v1. Part of the bump is going to be people just now picking it up due to the second season, but most of it just comes down to sheer luck of the threshold lottery.
Black Bullet v5 adds 185 BDs, total 2,328. Somehow this show has lucked out and not missed a BD wk2 yet despite never selling more than 277 BDs wk2.
Past seasons:
Monogatari v12, final volume, adds 301 BDs, total 36,644. Series average: 41,339.
OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Mouretsu movie sells 9239/790, total 10,029. At least it hits the 5 digit mark but man that’s a low bar to set. The estimate was fairly close if you totally ignore the points from the Amazon versions, which I’ve been doing all along. But otherwise, 31% overestimated on BD. Mouretsu was always an Amazon-heavy title.
Idolmaster movie adds 243 LE BDs, total 77,433 in wk6.
Idolmaster Cinderella Girls promo disc adds 1501/235, total 20,313.
Tamako movie adds 203 BDs, total 15,095 in wk6, meaning it added 317 in wk5.
Psycho-Pass BD Box adds 194, total 8,867 in wk5, meaning it added 248 in wk4. Thanks to low thresholds it’s able to return and officially pass the singles’ average (previously it was about 50 short).
Nanoha A’s BD Box adds 604, total 8,704. If it ranks once more it’ll be very close to the s1 box.

SAO beats Free on v1… took it long enough.
It needed a pretty big lead this volume to have a shot at locking in best average of Summer. Since it’s virtually tied, it looks very likely that Free will end up on top. Especially if v3-4 keep steady with v1 (or sell better?) due to the event tickets. But more importantly, Free is less volumes, so it’s got less time to drop than SAO.
So our season leaders of 2014 should end up being Hoozuki, LL! s2, Free s2, and UBW. Only one non-sequel there and by far the lowest seller, and only one of those seasons was competitive at all.
Yokai Watch is outselling Hoozuki, tho. ;)
I don’t typically track mainstream kids’ shows because they almost never sell discs, and making an exception for the one that does would be rather inconsistent (part of why I stopped tracking Precure; yes it has a larger adult audience than other kids’ shows, but it’s still not that relevant). So I recognize it’s sales and the massive importance of children’s programming to the anime industry, but it’s just a very very different segment of the market than I try to specialize in here.
Mouretsu will probably have a second week, it’s still in the top 100 on amazon.jp
Let’s hope we get a second season…Or an OAV…Or another movie… ;_;
Week 2 definitely, thresholds are very low nowadays. But probably only on BD, and it won’t be that much… don’t even know if it’ll be 1k. =(
The TV anime of Mouretsu averaged 7K didn’t it? So I’m pretty pleased with 10K.
As for a second season… I guess they could but the end of season 1 already diverged from the novels. I guess they could join back into them or just make more anime only stuff but I will be surprised if it gets a second season. Would love, love, love to get one but I will be shocked if it happens.
The novels are ongoing but have never ranked. In a way I’m surprised it got anime at all! 7K average was enough for a second season but when the movie was announced I had a feeling that we wouldn’t get anything more. Would love to be wrong…
10k is never good for a movie, especially one that has basically no box office earnings. It’s “not a disaster” at least but this is still really weak.
As for the 7k average, while that was a pleasant surprise it was also a really cheap release, so it’s really more the equivalent of selling like 4k. Definitely not safe sequel territory with little to no novel boost.
You’re right. It was super cheap, 7 volumes at normal price for 26 episodes, unlike some of today’s volumes which have 4 episodes on them but at double the price of a 2-episode disc.
96 minutes of movie plus Drama CD for 7800 yen is pretty darned cheap too, again not in its favor I guess but good for me I guess, just like the series was.
I’m surprised it got TV anime. I’m surprised it got a movie. I wish it had sold better but… with poor novel sales and not great TV anime sales why would it have suddenly sold 50K on the movie? Would have been great but in a way more surprising than it selling what it did. With the poor box office sales I am surprised it sold even 10K.
Do we have a list side by side anywhere of box office sales (where known) and disc sales of the movie?
I probably haven’t done such a list since the mania forum days, no. Mostly because I don’t track more than a handful of movie disc sales.
Damn, Sailor Moon will be canceled :((
It’s in no danger of being cancelled. Cancellations are nearly unheard of and countless series selling far less than (and having much weaker merchandising power than) Sailor Moon have aired and released on disc in full no problem.
I stopped watching Sailor Moon Crystal after watching the latest episode where they pair all the senshi up with the generals. It was like watching a more horrible version of Twilight. It came out of nowhere. When Sailor Venus said “We were in love” I laughed out loud. It was so fake and forced.
I’m glad it’s flopping because it doesn’t deserve any sales.
Updated with the full ranking.
