WELP this is sure a depressing week!

Summer update:
Nozaki-kun v1 sells 7639/4137, total 11,776. Overestimated 8.8% on DVD and 5.3% on BD. Good thing most of its time spent insanely high at Amazon was after points stopped being tallied, or it would be quite a lot more overestimated. I did think its Amazon ranking was pretty wildly out of line with its storefront rankings, but it still managed to be fairly spot-on rather than heavily overestimated and wk2+ could be pretty strong. Really borderline for a 10k average, but depending on how big wk2 is and how small the event ticket drop is, it’s got a chance. And it’s still the lone surprise hit of the season.

Aldnoah v1 sells 7280/1013, total 8,293. Underestimated 62.9% on DVD and 50.2% on DVD. I think the Aniplex underestimations due to their new Amazon policies are pretty well proven at this point! Once again, >50% BD underestimation and very high DVD underestimation, following in the footsteps of Mahouka and Persona (and Kuroshitsuji but that was a given with its female fanbase though 120% is still very high).

Barakamon v1 sells 3941/1770, total 5,711. Modestly overestimated (28.8% DVD, 9.2% BD) but nos disastrously, and still clears 5k wk1 easily. With an event ticket in v2 as well and only 4 vols total, could keep a 5k average. Not pulling in a whole lot of money due to low volume count and price, but with the manga boost and all, a very clear success.

Prisma Illya s2 v1 sells 4384/504, total 4,888. BDs underestimated 27.4%, DVDs 0.8%.

Hanayamata v1 sells 3280/541, total 3,821. Assuming thresholds aren’t a bitch next week with all these discs vying for wk2s, should comfortably pass 4k. Better than expected! 45.5% underestimated on BD which is huge. On the downside, I only just found out now it came with an event ticket, that was way buried in the Amazon description. Shiiiit. I hope that doesn’t mean a big drop for v2+. That’s always so difficult to predict. Still, I was preparing myself for a 2k average, 3k being likely now at least puts it on the level of Yuyushiki. …Which is a pretty low bar to set but hey, SUCH IS MY LIFE, I need to be happy about shows selling only “mediocre” rather than “utterly dead”. It should actually be helped by DVDs not ranking v2+ (likely they won’t), even though that’s kind of a sad thing to hope for. (This counts as me being happy, see what sales have done to me? This is one depressing as hell hobby I’ve found for myself.)

Tokyo Ghoul v1 sells 2273/1394, total 3,667 with event ticket. Overestimated a whopping 36.2% on DVD, 19% on BD.

Yama no Susume s2 v1 sells 2616 BDs, and an estimated 250 DVDs, total 2,866. Much less overestimation than s1 or the s1 re-release, but still somehow 6.7% over on BD. Just terribly depressing performance all around, but somehow not even the worst story this week! For that… ↓

Locodol v1 sells 2074 BDs, and an estimated 400 DVDs, total 2,474. How in the hell was this overestimated 25% on BD? Yes it ranked okay on Amazon in the last two weeks, but it had been #2 at HMV for even longer, behind only the Idolmaster Movie. In the weekly lists! And yet 30.4% DVD and 25.4% BD overestimation. Conclusion: HMV DOESN’T ACTUALLY EXIST, it’s all a hoax like Gamers! Remember folks, if your favorite anime is doing insanely well at a retailer that isn’t named Amazon or Animate, it literally does not matter!
And this is the event ticket/OVA volume too, just, wow. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of intentionally being very pessimistic and having reality still be even worse than you expected.

Rokujouma v1 sells 1968 BDs, and an estimated 360 DVDs, total 2,328. 8.1% overestimated on BD.

Sabagebu! v1 sells 1,983 as a BD-only release. 3.6% overestimated.

Love Stage v1 sells 618/998, total 1,616. Overestimated 13.3% on DVD, underestimated 6.2% on BD.

Zantero v1 sells 1099 BDs, and an estimated 420 DVDs, total 1,519. Underestimated 36.8% on DVD and 31.9% on BD. Not as much as the other recent Aniplex titles, but with such low sales, the difference between 30% and 60% underestimation isn’t very much! The pattern holds.

Soresekai BD Box sells 667 BDs, and an estimated 305 DVDs, total 972.

Basara s3 v1 sells 669/569, total 1,238. Compare to 13,992 s2v1wk1. Holy shit wow. Even changing from a popular timeslot to a late night one can’t explain a >90% wk1 drop (and it’ll be worse if you compare totals!). One of the worst season drops in history coming up.

Tokyo ESP v1 sells 408 BDs, DVDs do not rank. They were too low (outside top 300, sub-174) to estimate.

Kuroshitsuji v2 sells 2860/2994, total 5,854. 22% drop on v1wk1, up to wks2+ to stop it from having a heavy drop.

Bakumatsu Rock v2 sells 1747/798, total 2,545. Down 34.2%.

Free! s2 v1 adds 1394/1102, total 20,365. Got that 20k, but I kinda hoped it would start there, or really well above, given it doesn’t have long tails. Short of a surprise boost to like 24-25k for the event ticket volumes I don’t see this averaging 20k but who knows…

P4GA v1 adds 422 BDs, total 14,258.

Spring update:
Love Live s2 v4 sells 41,243 as a BD-only release. Not as high as I expected, but it depends on whether it has the 7.3k wk2 of v2 or 4.1k wk2 of v3. The wk1s have been almost identical for v2-4 (within ~600 discs).
v2 adds 425, total 54,195 in wk10.
v3 adds 703, total 47,870 in wk5.

Jojo s2 v3 sells 8541/1799, total 10,340. Only 12% down on s2wk1 which had an event ticket. Sticking to a 10k average over 12 volumes is still a tall order though.

Mahouka v3 sells 8057/2112, total 10,169. Very similar to Jojo, only down 9.3% from v2wk1 event ticket, also borderline due to length. This volume should have the first Aniplex+ bump since it ends the first arc, so if thresholds aren’t too crazy on Thursday we could see more added to v1-2.

Gochiusa v4 sells 7053/897, total 7,950. Held up decently with no artbox or event ticket this volume. But assuming it gets the exact same wk2-3 as v3, and v5-6 both sells the same as v4 (which is overly optimistic!) it would be around 10.1k. A more realistic guess puts it around 9.9k. However, the event ticket announced for v5 could help… somewhat anyway, it’s a “talk event” which is usually a lower tier of event worth less boost. It’ll come down to the wire, maybe literally to the wk2+ data of the last volume!

Nogenora v4 sells 5705/1245, total 6,950. Hoping it gets a decent wk2 and levels off above the 7k level for an almost 8k average.

Mekakushi v7 sells 2848/2223, total 5,071. Pretty steady with v6 if it has the same wk2.

Date A Live II v4 sells 3834/792, total 4,626. One left, on track for about a 5.6k average, down from 8.4k s1.

Mushishi s2 v2 sells 3088/778, total 3,866. Only down 6.4%, not bad considering the delay.

Kamiasobi v4 sells 1282/1716, total 2,998.

Brynhildr v2, final volume, sells 1,732 BD Boxes, DVDs do not rank. Series average: 1,840.

Daimidaler v3 sells 1,392 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Chaika v4 sells 1,105 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Captain Earth v3 sells 1,014 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Mangaka-san v4 sells 549 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Nanana v4 sells 462 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Haikyuu v3 adds 2028/1910, total 21,747. Only about 3.4k below v2wk2.

Isshukan v4 adds 386 BDs, total 3,320.

Past seasons:
Monogatari v11 sells 28473/3451, total 31,924. Smallest v1, as usual no respect for poor Suruga. She had the lowest-selling Bake vol too. In the end it looks like Hanamono being counted in SS will slightly lower its average, not increase it.

Kurobas v9, final volume, sells 7004/7154, total 14,158. Series average: 18,152 and should rise to 18.4 or 18.5k by the end. Down ~25% on s1, not bad.

Nisekoi v7, final volume, sells 3807/1060, total 4,867. Series average: 5,734, should end up just below 5.8k total.

Magi s2 v9 sells 689/853, total 1,542. Still two volumes left, how is this not over yet?

Space Dandy v6 sells 813 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Nobufool v6 sells 424 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Chuunibyou Ren v7, final volume, adds 635 BDs, total 6,769. Series average: 6,892.

Yowapedal v10 adds 547/521, total 6,292. Up 34.4% on v9 now, 4th best selling volume.

Saki Zenkoku-hen v7, final volume, adds 465 BDs, total 4,205. Up 8.8% on v6. Series average: 4,565.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
∀Gundam BD Box sells 3,449. That gets it onto the ¥100m list just barely (though it has a second box coming too, being 4 cour).

ef melodies BD Box sells 872.

Megami-sama TV s1 BD Box sells 849.

Ikkitousen GG BD Box sells 519. Exactly the same as the DD box.

Versailles no Bara BD Box sells 494.

  1. Avatar hpulley says:

Good thing for Hanayamata even with the event ticket in v1 (which perhaps no one else noticed either), the estimates for v2 and v3 are pretty much identical to v1.

    V2 2366 BD 320 DVD
    V3 2830 BD 377 DVD

Almost the same as v1 which was 2254 BD and 634 DVD, underestimated. As long as the rest are similarly underestimated, perhaps no drop? Too much to hope for?

The biggest sadness is that Locodol is MIA… :'( hopefully just missing the high threshold.

  2. Avatar rederoin says:

Locodol and Yama no Susume did not rank.

    R.I.P

    • something something says:

This is definitely the big disappointment of the prelim list.

I knew Yama no Susume had no chance to rank on DVD, and it’s always been heavily Amazon-biased in the past. But it’s not like the s2 BD ranked well on Amazon (which should have minimized overestimation), and it did have a decent presence at other retailers, so in theory this time could have been different… but if it is, it’s at best “on par” rather than heavily underestimated. The estimate was 2,803 BDs and the threshold so far is 2,860 so it would almost need to be the very next ranking to reach that. And then consider it’s 7 volumes, so it’ll drop… I just don’t get how the first season has now sold 4,249 original release + 3,022 re-release (the latter after s2 had already started airing, clearly it generated new interest!) and yet the first volume of the sequel (which is superior in every way) hits 2.8k wk1 if we’re lucky? 7.3k to ~3k. Ugh, singles really were a bad choice for this season, seeing 7 discs for a “short show” must be turning people off, even though it’s actually the same runtime as a normal 1 cour series. Nothing else makes any sense.

As for Locodol, sure it had that late boost which could wipe out storefront effect, but it was a constant #2 at HMV for quite a while before release, behind only the Idolmaster movie. So even though I told myself constantly not to get my hopes up, to be as pessimistic as possible, it still stings that (like Yama no Susume), it’s at best only matching its 2,779 estimate (and who knows, maybe worse!). It’s Sakura Trick/Gamers all fucking over again. The other thing that sucks for Locodol is DVDs not ranking. With a 575 estimate they should have been right on the cusp even considering low-selling DVDs tend to be overestimated, but still no ranking. Hopefully they’ll be close enough to the normal rankings to confidently estimate but we’ll still be looking at a little over 3k at best and that with a v1 that’s got an event ticket and OVA! v2+ will be lucky to get anywhere near 2k.

Days like this, deciding to get into following anime sales seems like a really terrible decision. Makes me think I should just take the extra couple hours sleep on Tuesday mornings instead. =(

      • Avatar hpulley says:

Indeed some days I think it was better when I knew absolutely nothing about sales figures. Ignorance is bliss…

Hopefully YnS doesn’t get pulled or delayed. Mount Ontake is shown in the ED at least… sad for the people that died there recently when it erupted.

        • something something says:

Oh there’s no danger of Yama no Susume’s broadcast or release being affected. These sales are not good, but it’s no worse than countless hoards of other shows.

          • Avatar hpulley says:

No, not due to sales. Due to the deaths of climbers on mount Ontake. It would be like School Days or Madoka or others with “similar incidents” to anime causing episodes to be delayed. I don’t think the girls ever go to mount Ontake but it seems that it is including in the montage of mountains in the ED animation. Perhaps they can just remove it. Or perhaps it is nothing but a few excited bloggers.

The sad deaths on Mount Ontake this week are real unfortunately.

            • something something says:

Oh I somehow missed the whole latter part of your message. Yikes, that is a rather awkward situation…

              • Avatar hpulley says:

After having to watch all but episode 1 ‘elsewhere’ this season it sure is great to see it on Bluray! Gorgeous! Even the HD uploads were late so I usually watched awful low res versions first. The final version is so good looking and sounding. Can’t wait to see Fujisan on disc… 4 I guess. Hopefully no delays are needed to change the ED animation or anything.

  3. Avatar rederoin says:

So now summer also has 2 borderline 10k sellers. If all borderline 10k sellers stay above 10k, we will get atleast 13 10k sellers. but even if a few borderline sellers do not make it, it barely matters. 10k is just arbitrary,(the ‘really high chance’ line for onoing manga/LN adaption sequal chance is around 9k anyway). I mean mahouka, gochiusa and Jojo could all end up selling within the 9.6k-9.9k range, barely any difference from selling 10.0k.

  4. Avatar Ejc says:

If you’re curious, here are the extended DVD rankings for this week.
Music DVDs and Idol Image DVDs are in brackets, with the Oricon sales.
Those 3 Idol Image DVDs with no known ranking yet will be revealed sometime on Thursday JST.
We will know Illya’s DVD sales in the full list.

Ah thanks, I thought I remembered Oricon putting this up closer to Wednesday.

      So we’ve got:
      *94 Prisma Illya

We’ll get this in the full list so no need to guess.

      108 *,440
      116 Zankyou no Terror
      123 Locodol
      136 Rokujouma
      142 *,344

Pretty even gaps between them, all within a 96 disc possible range. Pretty reasonable range to estimate from. Spread the gap evenly across the 34 rank gap, ergo assume a drop of 2.8 per rank, do some rounding for prettiness and you get:

      Zankyou – 420
      Locodol – 400
      Rokujouma – 360

      158 *,309
      159 Soresekai DVD Box
      160 *,300

Well that’s damn near as good as it gets. 305 then!

      174 *,263
      213 Yama no Susume s2
      *** *,216

Another reasonably tight range, 216 is >300 so must be closer to 263, call it 250?

      285 *,174
      *** Tokyo ESP

No point estimating anything outside top 300, could be 0 for all we know with no lower end, pass.

Thanks, I’ll go ahead with this. I’m always iffy on including this stuff or not these days but taking into account that some shows have DVD numbers and some don’t is a caveat everyone should be considering when comparing shows anyway! And we have ranges all within 100 here, which is pretty lucky.

I’m surprised at Love Live’s wk1 consistency, but yeah, I expected this volume to do a bit better, we’ll see how it performs next week.

Overall, really happy with Nozaki-kun (though, I was expecting something closer to 13K) and I’m hoping Barakamon doesn’t suffer a big drop in later volumes. A shame about Monkey but it was expected, perhaps with some luck it’ll reach 37K? Borderline 41K final average might be possible.

    >Aldnoah v1 sells 7280/1013, total 8,293
    Any chance at 10k?

    • Avatar rederoin says:

Average? No. Unless the 2nd cour boosts it(like kill la kill did). But v1 has a small chance if it has a long tail. I got a feeling it’ll get 9k next week, so it’ll be close. But I would not get your hopes up.

  7. Avatar Natapori says:

Ah poor Free! Eternal Summer. It’s low second week for Free! Eternal Summer.I’m sure impossible for 20K average sell for this season.May be next volume will be major drop too,I can’t imagine it now.Even Vol.3 and 4 come with Event Ticket can’t help boost sell like past season.I will looking for result now,I’m curious how much drop from 29K average sells of S1?

  8. Avatar Clotho says:

A/Z as the best non gundam mech seller this year I guess? Good.

Surprised no Free! bd but then that threshold.

I hope Kurobas 3 stays strong.

Looking forward to glasslip sells though I think it wasnt that big so not expecting much, but it was a really entertaining anime, that Kakeru.

      >A/Z as the best non gundam mech seller this year I guess? Good.
Uh…Sidonia? (Though I get Someanithing policy on not including CG titles still something to point out)

      • something something says:

Depends how much Aldnoah drops, but it’s definitely in the running to sell more.

      • Avatar Progeusz says:

Sidonia’s v1-4 average is 7,904, if you count v5 it will be 7,550, definitely closer to final average considering its performance is pretty disappointing after huge tail of v1. Data of wk1 dropped for the first time and by quite a lot. If it follows previous trend of little wk2s and repeats the drop in v6, the average could drop to ~7.4k. On the other hand if wk2 is nice and there’s no drop for v6 + possible wk3, average could be ~7.6k. It’s gonna be close with Aldnoah. Hopefully Sidonia ends up higher as the only things Aldnoah is good at are cool sociopath Inaho and moe Slaine. Oh, and music is nice.

  9. All things considered, I’ll take the 3.8k v1w1 for Hanayamata. The ending was incredibly satisfying.

  10. Avatar Tiago says:

nisekoi s2 confirmed, the sales were good enough. the manga boost was great, probably the most important point.

    • Anime that make 100k+/volume Oricon boosts do have a respectably high sequel batting average even when the discs do poorly. That said, series in that 4k+ tiers of disc sales show a pretty poor correlation between significant oricon manga/LN boosts and the announcement of non-split cour sequels, so I’d be inclined to give substantial credit to the disk numbers in Nisekoi’s case: http://wp.me/p3dDlR-19Q

  11. something something says:

FINALLY updated for the full list, 58 anime on the BD charts and DVD charts that went beyond Animation 30, which is very rare.

Also a lot of very depressing news in this week’s sales.

    But that’s basically every week.

  12. Avatar adit says:

u miss counting in LL should be a
    v2 adds 425, total 54,195 in wk10.

  13. Avatar Dominic says:

Zankyou no Terror bombed up almost as beautifully as Space Dandy!

  14. Avatar Ejc says:

Just passing this on as a fan of Locodol as well, but symbv told me that there have been rumours that Locodol did not have many discs pressed, and is therefore out of stock at many places. That could explain the very low numbers here. However, he did tell me that some people found out that stock will be back on Oct 15th when they asked the shop owners about it.

Who knows, maybe there are still a lot of fans without a disc and are waiting for the restock, but of course we don’t want to get our hopes up too much.

    • something something says:

It is out of stock at Amazon with no restock date yet identified, as well as backordered at HMV, true.

But I don’t want to get my hopes up. Optimism is a thing that exists only to be brutally beaten and battered by the nailbat of reality. ;_; Also even if it did see any boost later, the odds of it ranking in any one given week are low… ;_; (though a 15th restock would at least be in a slow week)

      • something something says:

        **5 *17 *** *** *13 *** *** | — | 月刊少女野崎くん 1

Not that #5 on a Friday in such a dead week amounts to much (not necessarily even enough to rank in the top 100!) but there’s definitely some truth to the stock situation during release week being inadequate. Obviously it would never be ranking ahead of Monogatari on any day in wk2, period, if this were a normal situation.

But this could easily be, say, all of its wk2 sales shipping together on one day, which does it no good if that translates into like 200 discs! To make up lost ground at all it needs to do its normal wk2 (maybe 200?) plus what it missed in wk1. Unless wk2 is 500-600+, it’s made up no ground in my opinion and would still be overstimated. =/ Of course, not all stores may be re-stocking at the same time, which is the real curse of going OOS fast… if a store here and a store there ship out in a staggered schedule, each individual shipment might be too small to rank. And when you’re selling as badly as Locodol, that’s sadly likely.

  15. Avatar AnimePhoenix says:

Nozaki-kun sold well as expected. I was thinking if it might be overestimated, but its just a little bit. Hope the next volumes don’t drop too much.

Aldnoah was nice at first but it got stale fast. Slaine is the only reason I’m going to watch season 2 really…

Hooray for Barakamon! The manga also got a great boost. The latest volume sold more in 7 days than what the previous volume did in 23 days!

Love Stage…ah, and the BL anime flops. I feel really bad for BL and yuri fans…

And ouch, poor, poor, poor ZnT. It was such a great show. It had its faults but it was still great.

SoreSekai does badly, shoujo flops, what else is new? Sigh. Still, its manga did get a nice boost.

    Bakumatsu Rock v2 sells 1747/798, total 2,545. Down 34.2%.

Free! ES managed to reach 20k, that’s good.
