GOCHIUSAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA also NOGENORAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Spring update:
Mekakushi v1 sells 4838/4215, total 9,053. It completely destroyed the Stalker estimates, as I assumed it would. And at first glance you’d think 9k wk1 really challenges the idea that this is doing poorly. Buuuut, remember half price + bundled with exclusive CD + 12 volumes of attrition coming up. Sure v1 will pass 10k but it’s still in a very, very questionable situation overall. I’m not sure this number is very good news, as much as it seems like it should be.

Nogenora v1 sells 6776/1661, total 8,437. Fantastic! Couple this with the novel boost and the later volumes expected to do fairly well in comparison, and if we don’t get a sequel I will be very unhappy. I’m really glad fans stuck around past initial episodes to watch this show improve so much, and rewarded that.

KamiAsobi v1 sells 2152/4493, total 6,645. Essentially zero storefront boost on DVD, but interestingly a massive underestimation for BD. DVD was only 3.2% understimated, BD 84.6%.

Date A Live II v1 sells 4601/962, total 5,563. Looking at a significant drop from s1, but still decent sales. I don’t think we’ll see more animated after the movie though, unless there are OADs.

Chaika v1 sells 1,490 BDs, DVDs do not rank. …Siiiiigh.

Mangaka-san v1 sells 679 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Blade and Soul v1 sells 362 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Puchimas!! v2 sells 2,889 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Love Live s2 v1 adds 15072, total 97,587 as a BD-only release. Event ticket.

Gochiusa v1 adds 1772/411, total 10,082. Event ticket. MUCH bigger wk2 than I expected, and it’s 10k already! I thought it had a chance to hit that in the long run, but not this soon. It should pass Non Non v1 easily. Whether it’ll pass Yuru Yuri (8,348) and Non Non (8,350) for best average sales of a cute girls doing cute things show since K-ON! is unclear but it’s sure got a shot.

Isshukan v1 adds 625 BDs, total 5,330.

Unranked in either format
Fuuun Ishin Dai Shogun

Winter update:
Nisekoi v4 sells 3923/1143, total 5,066. Still holding onto 5k wk1s.

Maken-ki 2 v4 sells 2012/453, total 2,465.

D-Frag! v4 sells 1,997 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Sekai Seifuku v4 sells 1,933 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

WUG v4 sells 1,845, BD-only release.

Inari Konkon v4 sells 1,355 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Imocho v4 sells 1,140 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

NobuFool v3 sells 503 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Chuu2koi Ren v4 adds 650 BDs, total 6,551.

Mikakunin v4 adds 409 BDs, total 5,438.

Saki Zenkoku v4 adds 424 BDs, total 4,206.

Witch Craft Works v4 adds 652 BDs, total 4,007, BD-only release. Making a up a bit of lost ground from the lower wk1. Average should stay over 4k in the end.

Past seasons:
Monogatari v8 adds 350 BDs, total 39,758.
v9 sells 30261/3742, total 34,003.

Litbus v6 sells 6594/1187, total 7,781.

Strike the Blood v6 sells 4380/1006, total 5,386. This show remains incredibly consistent. wk2 BDs will keep it at under 10% total drop from v1 six vols in.

Log Horizon v6 sells 2935/763, total 3,698. Speaking of consistent shows dropping less than 10% from v1 after six volumes.

NagiAsu v7 sells 2839/391, total 3,230.

Magi s2 v6 sells 852/1064, total 1,916. Just a reminder this still has 5 more volumes to go…

Tokyo Ravens v4 sells 1442/379, total 1,821.

Golden Time v4 sells 701 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Kurobas s2 v6 adds 2017/2439, total 17,919. Just like v2 which had a lower wk1 as well, v6 had the huge wk2. Only 1.3% behind v5 now.

Yowapedal v7 adds 397/407, total 5,316.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Persona 3 #1 adds 473 LE BDs, total 38,377.

  1. Primadog says:

Chaika not even hitting 1.5k for v1w1. Ouch! First time in a long time that a show I genuinely enjoy did this poorly.

What went wrong? Does deviating from the high school girls club formula really hurt the show’s sales potential that badly?

    • Could be that the contents of the releases are pretty skim milk. The version I got had the box, some illustrations and a pair of tiny stickers, but the disks themselves pretty much just had the episodes (no OVAs or cast/staff commentary, which is normally a favorite extra of mine). Still plan to buy the rest of the thing because the core product is tight as can be, but I’ve owned some R1 releases with more extra content.

    • something something says:

It’s not like high school girls club = success, though, and most of successes aren’t that at all. I don’t think anyone expected it to be that at any rate. I guess it just… never caught on? The novel was not terribly successful to begin with.

I dunno, I really can’t say why it bombed like this because there aren’t any major glaring flaws, it’s not an especially obscure genre, it’s decently enough produced.

      Oh well.

      • Primadog says:

Maybe it fell in that “everyone’s 3rd favorite show” hole and couldn’t climb out. Even that would be a surprise, considering how well Chaika was designed as waifu material. Was Scrapped Princess a success back in the days? I couldn’t find any Japanese sales info. Although its US license seemed to be a minor success – I have a copy in the shelf myself.

        • something something says:

“Waifu material” is a pretty vague idea, but anyway Scrapped Princess only ranked for about half of its 12 volumes. It also had an RE version that almost ranked a few times.

It came out in 2003, which is like the stone age as far as DVD sales tracking goes, so figuring out how it really sold is a bit tough.

The “official” average was 1,836. But take v3 for example:
          03巻 1,785 03.10.25 ※通常版 初動174位(*,737~*,693)
The RE sold roughly 700 units. If that held across most of the volumes more or less the same, we’re in mid 2ks.

Then take into account how much less wk1 front-loaded sales were back then, and it could have been doing 1k a week its wk2s for all we know.

At a guess I’d assume it sold at least 3k, probably more. Sales that old are really a pain in the ass to evaluate!

  2. lolivampires says:

Hopefully, GochiUsa pretty much guaranteed 2nd season would be my guess (unless it drops off or there’s a falling out internally). Kiniro Mosaic got one fairly quickly with less sales.

    • rederoin says:

I would say its high, but not guaranteed. Hell, even two 10k+ sellers that aired in 2007-2011 still did not get sequels(both have ongoing manga). Kannagi and Working!!’. But unless it has a big v3 or v4 drop, I think we are looking at least a 90-95%+ chance.

      • something something says:

Granted Working’!! was a sequel, so I’d exclude it from the list – can’t expect sequels to sequels forever. And Kannagi went on hiatus, which probably made things tougher.

But yes I agree, no sequel is ever guaranteed.

        • rederoin says:

That explains kannagi, I recently made a list from 2007 to 2011 to determine the ‘chances’ of a sequel that ongoing LN/Manga has(omitting anything below 3k, as 3-4k is already at 30-35%). So in those years its pretty much only Working S2 then. But before that we also had some top sellers with no sequel(i.e lucky star), but I preferred going with current trends.

Either way, chances are looking rather good for NGNL and Gochiusa going by current stats. How long it’ll take is another question though(a lot of people seem to give up hope if we don’t get an announcement within the year).

  3. something something says:

Updated with the commentary and such.

Working on the ranking summary next.

  4. AnimePhoenix says:

Shouldn’t YowaPeda now be at 5316 copies thanks to the extra 397 BDs?

    • something something says:

I was very confused by this question until I realized I had it in the list twice, once from Tuesday and once in the wrong spot from Thursday with the right number. Fixed!
