And it’s Madoka time. And Kill La Kill time too apparently, very strong boosts.
Winter update:
Z/X Ignition v1 sells 442/380, total 822. Another dead winter series.
Wizard Barristers v1 sells 610 BDs, DVDs do not rank.
Mikakunin v1 adds 537 BDs, total 7,954.
Nisekoi v1 adds 725 BDs, total 7,171. Hard to tell how much it’ll drop for v2 given how unexpectedly underestimated v1 was.
Noragami v1 adds 384/491, total 6,688.
WCW v1 adds 340 BDs, total 4,758.
WUG v1 adds 829 BDs, total 3,788. A proportionally strong wk2 given its wk1 sales, even if it’s still an event ticket vol.
Maken-ki v1 adds 368 BDs, total 3,766.
Inarikonkon v1 adds 369 BDs, total 2,346.
Fall update:
Kurobas v3 adds 926/1219, total 20,624. And already6% above v2’s wk3 total. If it keeps rising, 20k average is… sort of possible? I mean it’s still a long shot, but impressive. A couple volumes with big boosts from extras could actually do it! Average is 19,835 right now.
Kill La Kill v4 sells 7893/1120, total 9,013. Best first week sales so far, and should blow past v3 next week. However, a large part of this is that the show is over now, so that long tail we’ve been seeing should dry up for this vol onward. People who decided to pick it up as the final episodes aired (and who made v1-2 keep ranking so long) have already started buying, and this and future volumes will probably only rank 2, maybe 3 times. But as long as they get enough sales in wk1, it should stay consistent. 10k is still more a stretch than not, but it’s not completely impossible or anything. [Thursday additions] Speaking of…
v1 adds 526 BDs, total 12,926 in wk13, meaning it added 1540 in wks 8-12.
v2 adds 527 BDs, total 11,350 in wk9, meaning it added 528 in wk8.
v3 adds 674 BDs, total 10,433 in wk5, meaning it added 598 in wk4.
The average is now nearly 11k despite v4 only having ranked once so far. 10k suddenly looks much, much more likely. A volume popping up after 6 weeks to toss 2k more onto the pile sure works wonders doesn’t it?
Kyoukai v4 sells 2681/768, total 3,449. Still headed for about a 4k average but DVD ranking is more resilient than I expected (if still obviously way down from the event ticket vol).
IS2 v5 adds 1340/351, total 13,827.
Litbus Refrain v3 adds 730 BDs, total 9,516.
Gundam BF v1 adds 1139 RE BDs, total 7,467 just for BD boxes or w/first half DVD average, 8,012, and presumably the LEs will add more too. Possible 9k?
Non Non v1 adds 509 BDs, total 7,828.
Strike the Blood v3 adds 558 BDs, total 5,611.
Magi v3 adds 376 DVDs, total 4,132.
NagiAsu v4 adds 508 BDs, total 3,363, 9% above v3.
Summer update:
Monogatari v5 adds 360 BDs, total 40,765 in wk6.
v6 adds 410 DVDs, total 37,638.
HS DxD New v6, final volume, adds 586 BDs, total 8,613. Series average: 9,099
Neptune v7, final volume, adds 437 BDs, total 6,120. Up 49.5% on v6. Series average: 4,743.
Past seasons:
Shingeki v7 adds 347 BDs, total 39,323 in wk11, meaning it added 677 in wks 7-10.
v9, final volume, adds 817/453, total 39,242. Series average: 50,497
OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Madoka Movie 3 sells 127501/9872 LE/RE BDs and 10711 DVDs, total 148,084. I’d said I thought it would be 150k but this counts as pretty damn close!
Movies 1-2 add 595 LE BDs, total 109,933 in wk37, meaning they added 1103 in wks 33-36.
AnoHana adds 302 SLE BDs, total 42,578 in wk5.
Geass R2 BD Box adds 663, total 12,798.
WUG Movie adds 355 LE BDs, total 11,384 in wk6, meaning it added 718 in wks4-5.

Thought Madoka movie can be 180k first week, but 148k still nice,it beats K-ON movie first week right?or even LTD?
Arpeggio v4 suddenly drop around around 1k in BD(compare to v1-v3) seems because it had stock problem in Amazon, again, which is strange lol(come on Flying Dog,it’s already vol.4)
LTD no way, K-ON! sold 165,784 total. First week was 140,306.
As for what Madoka’s total will be, the first two movies ranked for 32 weeks (and probably will again this week!) but the third movie should be waaaaaaaaaaay more front-loaded. If it has the same wk1:total ratio as K-ON!, we should be looking at about 176k.
Or since K-ON! came out before the BD100 listings existed, Madoka has an edge there in that it can more easily rank for a longer time with lower sales in later weeks. So it could last a little longer, maybe upwards of 180k? It also comes out a lot earlier in the year, so the yearly ranking could cover more time with those lower BD200 limits. But the tail end of the long tail will only be small percentages, so a lot depends on next week’s sales.
I presume that imports via Aniplex USA/RightStuf/Animate USA won’t count towards the Oricon?
They will not, correct. (Though they’ll be an insignificant percentage of sales anyway.)
KuroBasu. <33333 It's really great to see it's amazing consistency. The recent manga volume seems to have benefited from the second season too I think, as it's possible that when this week's manga rankings come out, volume 26 could cross 700k. I don't think any volume of KuroBasu has ever been so close to doing that while ranking on the charts.
Good to see Noragami crossing 6k. Hopefully the BDs will put it close to 7k, maybe 6.8k?
Updated for the full list. Other rankings to follow tonight.
Nice ranking boost puts Kill La Kill within muuuuuuuch closer shot of 10k all of a sudden, after that 2k+ addition to v1. And if Madoka movies 1-2 keep ranking I’m going to need to add more columns to my spreadsheet…
I’m pretty sure Mikakunin is a winter and not fall show.
Pasted it under the wrong section, yeah. Fixed.
So I’m actually going to hold off on the ranking summary stuff until tomorrow night, I need to go to bed early tonight and Gochiusa + InuNeko are higher priority than updating some sales rankings right now. Updates to follow Friday, then!
I really like both but let us know what you think! Won’t say more until you do and perhaps, for the sake of anti-spoiling we need another thread than sales to discuss them anyway.
When I see at least ~2 eps of everything I’m watching this season I’ll just post a Spring impressions type thing.
(Needless to say, both shows were fucking amazing. Also, sleep now!)
Poor Wizard Barristers. Actually thought it could have done well, or at least sell decently, but with its lack of hype, both pre-airing and while airing, I sort of saw this coming. Also, WUG’s doing decently. Not exactly good for an idol anime, but for an anime that’s a respectable performance. If they only released it on DVD they’d sell even more and maybe do 4k.
“If they only released it on DVD…”
…it would have sold less, at least as reported. DVDs likely wouldn’t have made the threshold either week, and nearly all the DVD sales would have just been taken from what ended up being BD sales. Releasing in a second format isn’t necessarily a net increase in sales.
There’s increasingly little reason to release DVDs at all for late night otaku anime aimed at males. How many Japanese WUG fans do you think were sitting there going “Damn, I’d like to buy this but I don’t own a BD player. In 2014.” Basically none.
(Also keep in mind event ticket etc)
YowaPeda volume 5 is now listed with a bonus as well. This was very last minute though. Or maybe it’s been there all the time? I wonder if the plan on introducing bonuses for all the volumes. Not that I’m complaining.
