Note: Gross sales in yen are calculated using the MSRP without sales tax as of April 8, 2014. So you may see some numbers dropped, but given the tax rate change in April 2014, I had to convert everything to pre-tax for fairness.

Note: Air is 23,761 if you include Air in Summer. I tend not to add specials if not released in the same volume as core series episodes, though these did air on TV. Could go either way.

Note: Both iDOLM@STER seasons are a tally of the standalone DVD/BDs plus the Gravure For You game+BD bundles. For season one, Vol. 1 came with the full PS3 game which sold 80-100k, which cannot realistically be counted all as anime sales, sales are being calculated as follows: Vol. 1-9 standalone DVD avg + Vol. 1-9 standalone BD avg + Vol. 2-9 G4U bundle avg. Cinderella Girls is just standalone avg + G4U avg.

Note: Code Geass (season 1) tally no longer includes a 5,185 BD average (v1-4, v5-9 did not rank as only yearly lists were available for BDs back then and they didn’t make the cut). The BDs were not released simultaneously with the DVD release, as BDs weren’t very common at the time. Individual BD volumes matching the DVD release were released starting 11 months after the last DVD volume. Before, I included it the BDs in the total because it seemed like an outlier, but now that I have a column for re-release sales, I think it’s more appropriate to put it there. This also aligns with how other sites count the series.

  1. Avatar zoro says:

    is 10k series average good?

    • something something says:

Yes, absolutely. Less than 10% of shows reach the 10k average mark.

      • Avatar zoro says:

        OMG!!
        less than 10%!!
why is Anime market so weak?

        • Avatar Progeusz says:

It targets niche audience. The BDs and merchandise cost a lot, so the industry is doing pretty well, it’s a model that works for both producers and customers. Other models wouldn’t work as well.

        • something something says:

Keep in mind that the revenue from a normal one cour Japanese release averaging 10,000/disc would be equivalent to a North American release (say a $60 cour box) selling somewhere between 50,000-80,000+ depending on the disc count and MSRP of the JP release. The JP market is a collector’s market, and is priced accordingly. For any given anime, it’s expected that only a very small percentage of fans will buy the BDs. With an average of just a few thousand per disc, a show can be viable if other media and merchandise for the franchise does well. It’s all about production committees, multimedia pushes, and making the most out of a hardcore fanbase while having other cheaper goods available to the more causal fans.

  2. Avatar solid snake says:

how much the revenue from natsume yuujinchou??
and how much price for one volume(2ep)?

    • something something says:

Your average 2-ep (3-ep for 2 cour shows) volume of late night anime is between ¥5,000-8,000, but it varies. DVDs are less than BDs, usually by about ¥1,000/vol. Natsume discs average about ¥6,200 each, tax excluded. The BD box was ¥32,000.

      TV Seasons
      ¥327,620,000 Natsume Yuujin-chou
      ¥312,340,000 Zoku Natsume Yuujin-chou
      ¥334,780,000 Natsume Yuujin-chou San
      ¥298,470,000 Natsume Yuujin-chou Shi

      OVA
¥173,890,000 Natsume Yuujin-chou Itsuka Yuki no Hi ni

      BD Box
      ¥399,140,000 Natsume Yuujin-chou Season 1-2

All told, about ¥1,846,230,000. There’s a BD box coming for season 3-4 as well, which could put it over ¥2bn total. And of course we get season five in Fall.

      • Avatar solid snake says:

where did you get revenue from natsume yuujinchou shi?
        also the ova

You just multiply the disc MSRP * the number of discs sold. I track every late night anime disc that gets released in a big spreadsheet that is the basis of all data on this site.

            • Avatar Ejc says:

Look at Oricon or Amazon JP (before they apply their discount), as they list the recommended retail price with the 8% sales tax included.

                468,468×7344=¥3,440,428,992

Probably i do a big mistake or I am not understand it /:

                • something something says:

You have to factor in that DVD and BD are different prices. And sometimes different volumes of the same show vary in price. Might be a discounted volume one, or a more expensive volume with some bonus disc, or whatever.

When you add up all the different versions of each volume and their individual sales numbers, you can get a total gross. (I can post the detailed breakdown for Shingeki tonight when I get out of work, if I remember.)

                  • Avatar solid snake says:

can you give me the disc average price of Shingeki no kyojin

                  • something something says:

                    Here you go:
                    Shingeki gross in yen

You can see that the DVD was less than the BD for each volume, and volume one and two cost less than the rest.

                    • Avatar Ejc says:

solid snake, just remember your figures include that 8% sales tax. It would end up roughly around the 3.15 billion yen on here if you exclude the 8% sales tax, as it’s done for comparison purposes (since the sales tax % has changed over time)

                    • Avatar solid snake says:

                      thank you very very much!!

but can you tell me about the tax sales?

                    • something something says:

Japan has a sales tax of 8% currently. So a disc with a retail price of ¥7,000 will cost you (and be listed at online retailers as) ¥7,560. We don’t count the ¥560 of tax in the total revenue because 1) sales tax changes over time (it used to be 5% for example) and 2) because, well, it’s tax, not money that’s actually going back to either the production committee or the retailer. So measuring sales with tax included isn’t helpful.

  3. Avatar nero says:

Osomatsu-san at #2 just looks out of place in all the weirdest ways — Avex, Pierrot, primarily female fanbase, comedy series … what on earth happened there?

    • Avatar Ejc says:

The first two volumes have event ticket application serial codes bundled with them for a popular group of mostly male seiyuu. It is for the same May 8th event, but there’s an afternoon and night part.

      Vol.1: http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B0162IXPZK/
      Vol.2: http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B0162IXPVY/

Naturally sales are inflated for these 2 volumes as there is no “only one serial code is valid per applicant” as is the case now with the Love Live! concert events, so there are fans that buy multiple copies to give themselves the highest chance of winning the right to buy an event ticket ahead of everyone else.

Sales of the later volumes still have not bottomed out as if we compare the first week sales of volumes without event tickets bundled (Vol.3 to Vol.5), we have 48,121 for Vol.3, 45,619 for Vol.4 and 41,393 for Vol.5. There’s a sharper fall in sales from Vol.4 to Vol.5, so it’ll be interesting to see what the sales number is for the lowest selling volume, as that’s an indication of how many people bought the whole anime series.

  4. Avatar uncharted says:

so wired Hataraku Maou-sama! sells nice and he didn’t get another season!
what did you think the reason?

    • Avatar solid snake says:

      yeah,so strange
      the anime was beautiful(:

    • something something says:

As far as I know there’s no specific reason. Like, no legal disputes or lack of source material or anything. So the only thing we can assume is that the main committee members thought they got all the possible the benefit out of it in season one and they’d like to devote their resources to promoting a different series instead.

But yeah it’s still odd. It more than sold enough discs and novels to justify a sequel, but sometimes the decisions are just complicated. Sort of like how we still have no No Game No Life season two.

      • Avatar hpulley says:

NGNL got a movie now…. something I guess though for me at least, the current trend toward movies is not a good one as it almost always means waiting for the discs to come out before I can see it.

        • something something says:

The one upside is that NGNL is structured in such a way that a movie could work well. It’s enough time to set up and execute one of their games without having to rush the pacing to a detrimental degree. At least I hope it is.

But yeah, ugh, the wait for movies sucks.

          • Avatar Hahalollawl says:

Movies as sequels seems dumb imo. By that point you already have evidence that the show is popular what more do you need!?

I’m not against stand alone anime movies though. Or even a movie with a series sequel, though not sure if that happens often/ever.

            • something something says:

My takeaway is that movies are much lower risk. Cheaper than animating 13 episodes, with potentially better gain. (And the 8k+ estimate for a sequel might be generous, it could be 5k for all we know.)

10k avg over 6 ¥7000 MSRP discs = ¥420m. And considering the sequel would probably drop to at best like 8k and change, let’s say ¥350m.

A movie for NGNL should make at least ¥250m, then 10,000 discs at ¥7000 would be ¥70m. ¥320m then as a “actually pretty disappointing” low-end estimate, especially since the disc will surely cot more than ¥7000. Since it should cost less to animate and market one ~90-120 minute film than ~300-325 minutes of TV anime it seems like it’d be easy to come out ahead. We’ve seen plenty of movies with much less potential than NGNL get made.

          • Avatar hpulley says:

They have said they are doing the standalone novel #6 which will work fine as a movie but the wait is unfortunate for us since the chance of that movie showing up here is very low, only Monogatari, Madoka, LoveLive, Ano Hana, only the biggest late night movies ever come here. I just hope the movie does well and they decide to make more TV anime as well.

      ● Touken Ranbu

      Possibilities:
      ● Re:Zero
      ● Macross Delta
      ● B-Project
      dark horse(s) in Fall Season?

It does look bad, but some of those possibilities may hopefully pull through in the end.

      • Avatar JTaicho says:

Re:Zero I really hope will hit 10K, but might have to wait till end of year sales report. I really think Macross Delta will fall short due to it being 9 discs. The attrition seems pretty bad on that one unless there is some event ticket madness.

Fall does have some interesting possibilities now that I look at the previews. Probably Haikyuu will do 10K. Brave Witches could hit 10K too. Natsume, Jojo, and http://www.Working probably have an outside chance.

I personally have hopes for Shuumatsu no Izetta and Keijo!!! right now.

Still, getting to double digit 10K+ series might be pushing it this year.

so this only lists Japanese sales? I was trying to figure out sales in the west but I can’t seem to parse numbers for it.

    • something something says:

The site is called “Anime DVD/BD Sales in Japan”, lol. But yeah, JP sales only, I’m not personally interested in western disc sales (which are incredibly hard to come by anyway). They’re two dramatically different markets so there wouldn’t be a way to compare the numbers anyway.

Your best bet for any western sales estimates would be toritsunahokori’s https://animetics.net/ but with no easily accessed Oricon equivalent in the US it’s really, really hard to come up with estimates.

  12. Avatar Yaoi-Senpai says:

Is Love Live! Sunshine is going to be added here? :O

Btw, what’s the meaning of “Breakdown Studio/Publisher/Year”?

    • something something says:

After vol. 3 or 4. I don’t add series that are hugely skewed by event tickets right away because it gives a very misleading impression (even more than event tickets already cause), and Sunshine has event tickets in the first two volumes. Same reason I waited a long while to add Osomatsu-san, to cite the most recent example prior to Sunshine. Mainly what I want to avoid is people going “XYZ IS THE BEST SELLING ANIME EVER!” when it’s really just a super-inflated event ticket volume and the show is really going to end up like 10-20k short of the #1 spot.

The studio/publisher/year charts are just the 10k series grouped by each criteria. Of the currently 154 shows on the 10k+ list, 17 are from the studio A1 Pictures, 15 are from publisher King Records, 14 aired in the year 2012, etc.

  13. Avatar Yaoi-Senpai says:

Just wanted to make sure, the top 5 anime in this list, did they sell well with the tickets or without the tickets?

    • something something says:

      79,201 – Bakemonogatari (2009)
      • No event ticket boosts
      • Drop from highest to lowest volume: 11,377 (13.5%)

      71,061 – Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica (2011)
      • No event ticket boosts
      • % drop from highest to lowest volume: 12,967 (16.2%)

68,959 – Kidou Senshi Gundam SEED Destiny (2004)
      • No event ticket boosts (large boost in the final volume but not from a ticket)
      • % drop from highest to lowest volume: 35,113 (36.8%)

      67,341 – Love Live! 2nd Season (2014)
      • Large event ticket boosts
      • Drop from highest to lowest volume: 65,843 (56.3%)

      64,798 – Osomatsu-san (2015)
      • Large event ticket boosts
      • Drop from highest to lowest volume: 70,803 (62.0%)

Bake and Madoka held consistent from volume to volume to an extent that would be considered enviable for even a 5k seller, let alone the two highest selling shows post-Evangelion.

I don’t expect we’ll ever see another 70k+ show without some staggeringly large event tickets. I simply don’t believe it’s possible for the declining physical media market to support a 70k seller with under 20% spread. Or hell, under 30% or even 40% for that matter. The gap alone between Osomatsu-san’s highest and lowest volumes is larger than the LTD sales for 4 of the 6 volumes of Madoka, yetit averaged 5.5k less! That’s crazy.

  14. Avatar Yaoi-Senpai says:

Not sure if I should post it here, but what’s the most shoujo Ai sold anime of all time?

    • something something says:

Depends on your definition (though the accepted term is yuri, nobody uses shoujo-ai in Japan).

Maria-sama ga Miteru’s first season in 2004 averaged 10,069. It’s pretty strictly Class S (so don’t expect confessions or anything physical outside of one flashback) but it’s considered a big part of the yuri tradition.

Uhhh other than that, it’s pretty pathetic all around sales-wise. Nothing super obviously successful comes to mind.

      • Avatar Yaoi-Senpai says:

WTF VOL.1 SOLD 17K COPIES. Never heard of it, it’s an old Yuri anime. So the most sold BL TV series is Junjou Romantica with only 11k copies and for Yuri, it’s this Maria with 17k copies.

Thanks for your help, I thought that Yuri is a failure genre (Since most of Yuri manga has poorly sales) Btw, Yuru Yuri Vol.1 sold 11k as well.

        • something something says:

Yuru Yuri did pretty well, yes. It’s way more on the comedy side of things and doesn’t get serious about any romance, but it’s yuri comedy at least.

Marimite was a popular novel series, and would have sold to more than yuri fans.

        • Avatar Progeusz says:

Saki, KinMoza, Symphogear, A-Channel are more yuri than Yuru Yuri to name a few examples.

State of yuri is very sad, it doesn’t even have many long manga and big chunk of those focus on drama (often with guys involved). If you want something happy, you’re basically limited to oneshots and few-chapters-long (short?) stories, at least there’s a lot of those. In anime form it is a failure genre. The only TV show with big focus on yuri in recent years is Sakura Trick and it sold bad according to Oricon (but at least decent amount of copies was shipped to stores so it most likely earned some money)

          • Avatar Yaoi-Senpai says:

@Something:- By any chance, do you know the sales of the novels?

@Progeusz Oh, thanks for the recommendation. Just want to mention this, the only Yuri manga I enjoyed was “Girlfriend” and “Octave” other than that, I’ve never liked the rest.
Most of One-shots are incomplete by my option, not sure why but I feel something is missing, that’s why I never read them.

    • Avatar Ejc says:

By the way, shoujo-ai is an outdated term. It’s usage now refers to “love for little girls”, as in “pedophilia”. Yuri is a blanket term that refers to female x female relationships, whether explicit or just with undertones.

      • Avatar Yaoi-Senpai says:

I know this, I’ve seen you and some users in MAL talking about it.

I think Shounen Ai is the same? I’ve never seen any Japanese people refers gay anime as Shounen Ai, they always name it as BL. BL mangaka, BL anime, BL games…etc like this.

  15. Avatar Yaoi-Senpai says:

Wait….what? Utapri is owned by King Records and not broccoli?

    • something something says:

King Records is the primary funder of the anime. They distribute both the video discs and (most of? all of?) the music for Utapri. Broccoli publishes the games. Different companies for different aspects of the franchise. Since this post is about DVD/BD, Publisher and Distributor here refer to the DVD/BD publisher/distributor.
